Great looking video! There are plenty of games that use crank + A,B buttons. For those I'd recommend placing Playdate deeper into your left hand and pressing the buttons with left hand's thumb while operating the crank with right hand. While unconventional - it is actually more comfortable in the long run.

I can't put mine down. I have no idea why but Generations is the game that really addicted me. I don't normally like puzzle games but it's SO GOOD! I also love Crank Tanks, which has great graphics and unbelievable terraforming physics. If you are on the fence and have the loot you should get one!

For somebody that lives outside of the US, the price of it comes to slightly over double (shipping, taxes, customs, vat, and so on)... Hope at least they would have distribution centers around the world, to reduce these taxes, even the $200 price tag its a bit too much for it... but more than double, cannot justify that sadly.

Yeah that's a bummer. It's a fun little device but that's a pretty steep price increase.

"Is the crank a gimmick?" It is what you make it. (And by you I mean the devs) If they managed to keep one upping themselves and come consistently with new ideas, it will feel like a transformative experience. Otherwise, it will be what people call "a gimmick". Every novel control scheme starts like that.

It's a really fun device If i do say so myself, the crank is really sturdy and easy to use, but as you said, it may take you time to feel comfortable with it

To me the playdate is the perfect complementary device: Its a perfect platform for small developers doing intresting things while working great where my other devices do not, like on train rides with stark sunshine. If you only play inside in dim rooms the screen is not optimal, but for me I use my phone/laptop in these environments and the playdate when I'm out and about. Even if they make an updated version I hope they only add a backlight if it does not compromise the crispness of the screen or make it an option.

There's tons of retro handheld consoles that get bright enough just fine and are perfectly viewable in pretty much any condition outsight of the sun directly shining on it on a very sunny day. This device is a neat little gimmick, but honestly I think it's pretty much a niche among niche. It'll be relevant as long as it has a passionate community, but it's so niche the system has a lifespan of just a few years. Especially with that price tag.

Niche for sure. It’s plenty fun for what it is but I wouldn’t expect it to ever approach anything near main stream. And there’s nothing wrong with that!

@@thenonexistinghero Precisely because there are already tons of handheld consoles with standard OLED/LCD screens I love that there is an option with a transflective 1-bit screen from SHARP, as I really adore this kind of display. Like the Wii it will probably never be a "long term success", but for the time being I love the creativity out of the community and I think there is enough exploration of the consoles constraints and abilites left to have the community going for a good bit.

​@@matt_HM absolutely I did! As for if it's worth it, I couldn't say. Personally I found it to be one of the absolute top product display imagery that I've seen. Being on the preorder list since a month or two back, something that irks me is that there seems to be a lot of "huh, that's neat" - type of games, but no real shining stars that would make people gaming on normal systems want to buy a playdate for the "exclusive" games. Like BotW for switch, oe Journey for the PS3. I suppose the financial incentive of the playdate game market and audience will never quite get there. Bit of an off tangent rant there... Anyway, you definetly seem to have talent for photography and lighting!

Thanks again! From what I've played thus far it does feel like a bunch of fun, quirky indie games. I got a similar vibe from the WarioWare games. Still looking forward to playing more, but, you're right, there likely won't be a game that defines itself as a console seller on its own.
