The story is so well told and woven together that even though there is no action present on the surface, you do not feel bored. This episode was phenomenal! Every relationship got more complex and felt more real this episode. Seeing Luthen and Mon's more opposing views on the Rebellion opens some interesting questions into the morality of the Rebels, necessary sacrifices, and how far is too far. Also, really fun seeing them hide their conversation from Mon's driver again. The political conversation Mon has with Tay had me intensely focused. I loved how Tay implied he was growing weary of the Empire and he might be too extreme for Mon, then she slowly reveals that she is actually far more weary of the Empire and secretly making moves against it. Also, the way she kept reminding him to smile was a subtle detail that added to the immersion. The Yularen cameo this episode was perfect, not overdone and sensible. Palpatine's namedrop was a cool way to place where the ISB in the Imperial chain of command, essentially going from Palpatine, to Yularen, to the ISB, and then the Corpos beneath them. The ISB feels even more imposing now and I loved how the ISB agents interacted during their meeting. Dedra coming forward with her breaking of the rules, and getting rewarded for her ambition was a nice surprise to me. I know she's evil, but I can't help but root for her. Andor going back home and seeing the consequences of his actions was a little bittersweet, seeing how he both unintentionally inspired people by pulling the heist successfully, but also with that, forced the Empire to tighten their grip on all the worlds. I like the conflict within Cassian when Maarva says that the heist is what has inspired her to take a more active position against the Empire, while she doesn't know it was Cassian who did the heist for his own selfish reasons. This show just feels real and all the actions characters take have tangible effects throughout the galaxy. Like how during Cassian's sentencing at the end, the judge notes that what would have been a 6 month sentence is now a 6 year sentence, alluding to his heist being the reason for the increased punishment. The K2-SO psych-out at the end was so cool. We got to see just how intimidating and powerful droids like him are. The music for space Florida was a standout in this episode. It came out of nowhere and I immediately started bopping my head to it and wanted to dance. Felt like a good expansion in what the Star Wars galaxy sounds like. This episode is a 10 for me!

One of my favorite things about Andor is that they make me root for the antagonist. This is just awesome, Dedra is probably the only main antagonist we have. In general I would say that only the empire is. But in their brilliance they wrote Dedra in a way that makes me like her and want her to succeed even though she is trying to uncover the rebels. Also the sentencing at the end was bc of Aldahni, not just the 6 years. Yularn talks about it in the meeting. This sentencing without a trial and quick arbitrary arrests became emergency measures just now, implying this wasn’t the norm or even illegal in the empire prior to the heist. Edit: of course Syril is also an antagonist and falls in this category with Dedra too.

This series has been a major turning point in Disney Star Wars for me. All those slow burn episodes are paying off so much each new week as the characters become more intertwined in this beautifully written plot. The Mon Mothma story has become so compelling and fascinating to watch. Her scenes with Luthen are so strong and both actors portray the gravitas of both their situations brilliantly. Unlike the previous Disney shows a cannot think of any character so far that has no place in the story as it unfolds, that is a testament to the brilliant writing and direction of this whole production.

It’s hard to fear an enemy that’s such a joke. Instead in this show I hold my breath each time there’s imperial presence. We know Andor doesn’t die, but he can get hurt and almost everyone else is fair game for getting killed. I guess they tried to make us fear Riva by showing that she wouldn’t hesitate to kill. But somehow it just came across as reckless and cartoonishly evil. Whereas this show it’s much more grounded so some are highly effective and some are lax….but the empire as a system is effective and should be feared. Plus there’s a lot that we as an audience adopt from the reaction of the protagonists. In Andor, a single tie fighter makes our heroes act afraid, take cover, and we see them take these adversaries VERY seriously, each and every single time. It’s hard to fear a villain after a plucky 10-year old has stood up to her or believe the heroes are in danger when they can use an overcoat to “sneak” out of a super secure facility. I don’t think ever SW show needs to be like Andor, but there’s certainly got to be some middle ground. It’s become a rubicon for anyone who either wasn’t already all in or who didn’t truly understand the price to pay, like Mon Mothma who is only now realizing there’s no way to wage war that won’t mean the death and suffering of innocents. It could be a war film, a spy thriller, a heist flick, a horror film, an adventure story, a gangster film. There can be stories about warriors, soldiers, criminals, cops, drugrunners, crime bosses, politicians, etc. It may be new to Star Wars, perhaps unfamiliar, but why the hell is that a bad thing? Star Wars is a sandbox where almost any kind of story can be told and yet, people are putting these arbitrary restrictions on it as if everything has to follow a certain formula. @@ImTheReverse that is not even wrong. Each setting and universe is also created by the music, which is a direct emotional texture that also associates it with other works. Star Wars is definitely not “anything goes”. It’s Lucas love-letter to serials, pulp, retrofuturism like Flash Gordon, and vintage Golden Age Hollywood. It’s Lucas childhood and decidedly UNmodern. He specifically went out of his way and made it vintage already in 1970s. He could have used synths, but he specifically didn’t want it. He famously pushed the envelope in effects and the PRESENTATION of the universe, but the content was always retro even by 70s standards. Death Rays (death star), evil emperors, swinging llianas (or cables), fencing with sabres, or landships (sandcrawlers) are as old school as “sci-fi” it can be. The sound he chose were clearly temp tracks of Holst and Korngold. KZbin it, and you hear it. He wanted to invoke romanticism and again old school Golden Age Hollywood, which of course covers all the genres you mention, but in a particular way, including horror, adventure, and more. Of course Korngold style swashbuckling wouldn’t fit Andor. What they should have done is listen to old spy films, war films and suchlike and go from there with an orchestral sound.

Cassian is facing time in a literal prison, but I observe many other characters in predicaments. Maerva is in a town occupied by a hostile force but takes shelter in her hope for rebellion. A prison of the mind, of sorts. Dedra is imprisoned by success, having extra responsibility and having others waiting opportunistically for a chance to backstab. Syril is in a job that effectively looks and acts like a prison. The last shot of the employees in their "cells" was powerful. Mon effectively describes her prison, living a duplicitous life whose scope just escalated after last episode's events. I'm sure you could extend this to a few other characters. @@esharp86 now that you mention it she probably is. Maybe r2 or chewy but those two would be hard to muck up so I don't really think they count. Mon Mothma probably has the best dialog in all of Disney star wars. I really enjoyed the line about the stone and the knife.

Still loving the show! All action all the time would just become a bunch of white noise after a while. I love the fact that the more classic Star Wars elements (stormtroopers, Tie fighters and the like) are gradually introduced as the scope of the story expands. By having the series start with low-level private security guys as the main adversary, there is a real sense that s___ is getting real when you actually see stormtroopers for the first time. I never thought I would feel unnerved by the sight of those guys, but Andor pulled it off- and that is a testament to how great a show it really is. People giving up on this show because of the slow burn or percieved lack of action feels like the TV equivalent some impatient dude not calling back an amazing lady because she didn't want to bang on the first date. But people who have the patience to get to know this show will be really glad they took the time to do so.

This episode was fantastic, some of the best Star Wars live action deep lore I’ve ever seen. The scene of the Empire doing their bureaucratic business was so good. As was seeing Syril have to take a mundane Star Wars office job. We have never seen Star Wars in this way, and it’s so refreshing. Cassian just going on the run and drinking his money away on a beach is so smart as well, the guy is on a journey, we are seeing his growth over time as we should, and he is not yet close to the guy we see in Rogue One yet, as it should be. The Empire becoming even more evil as well, giving people 6 year prison sentences for what used to be 6 months, the little details this show cares about, it’s so good.
@f1jones5442 жыл бұрын
I keep seeing importance being placed on so-called "lore." Lore != Story, of which these seven episodes have offered none. Lore is akin to reading an encyclopedia versus reading a novel, and this show demonstrates that distinction.

The Empire's oppression really came out in that brief court room scene. Trying to state your case could give you additional charges for resisting judgment. The judge mocked him for saying he's a tourist. There's no trial, just sentencing.

Political intrigue and back-stabbing, factionalism and infighting on both sides, and refreshing to see the brutal consequences and choices that have to be made to stand up to an authoritarian regime and launch an insurgency. So refreshing to see the moral grey areas and complexities of conflict come alive in Star Wars and about time they gave the 'Wars' in a Galaxy Far Far Away the dose of seriousness they needed. I always thought Rogue One was special because it looked at Star Wars in a new way and Andor is taking the best elements of what made Rogue One a great war movie and is refining it. We need more Star Wars like this that does its own thing while respecting the lore and galaxy created by the Original and Prequel Trilogies (something the Sequels never did in my eyes). What a brilliant TV series.

The best episode yet, imo. The depth of it all. The tension in every scene. And the acting was incredible. The scene with Mon mothma and Tay stood out most to me. The danger Mon is in, not even being able to trust her own family, the mask she keeps up. Loved it. I would happily see a Mon Mothma spin off.

I am loving this show. The buildup, pacing and characters are amazing. I love how they are showing that you can't escape the Empire's grasp. Mon Mothma thinks they can play soft with the Rebellion, having no idea that Palpatine isn't playing soft (i.e. building the Death Star), she doesn't realize just how worse the Empire is going to make things. Andor then thinks he can just fly away from the Empire and live in luxury which he quickly discovers he can't. We now have seen Star Wars Office Space lol. One thing I just wish we could have gotten in this show is the Isards (Armand and Ysanne) as the main ISB agents for the series. Would have been a great way to bring them back into canon. Also an appearance by Garm Bel Iblis in the Mon Mothma would be great, I know it sounds too fn servicey but those characters would make sense to be in the story. So far this has been my favorite of the Star Wars series, even above The Mandalorian, which I do enjoy too.

I especially like the references to Palpatine, how they are all learning to maintain two distinct personas in order to succeed. Luthen even looks like Palpatine - a kindly, old man interested in art and on the other side, in a way, merciless in devotion to the cause. It takes a Palpatine to defeat a Palpatine, or not? It might be the theme - how far can they go without turning into their enemy?

This is what Book of Boba Fett and Kenobi COULD have been. It’s truly amazing what good story and character development can do in place of action for the sake of action. Only issue I had was Sinta’s scooter ride down the mountain, just didn’t look right and would have benefited from a wide shot. This episode really highlights just how corrupt the Empire was, the backstabbing, jockeying for clout WITHOUT the cartoonish ineptitude we usually see from the Empire. I honestly felt bad for Syril, he just looks like a fish out of water at this point. I’d like to see where his story ends up. I almost feel they might be setting him up as the main antagonist for season 2. Episode 7, overall a solid 9.5/10

Honestly while I think more aliens would be good, I’m not sure how well they would’ve worked so far. The whole Aldahni (I think I spelled that right) plan was for them to first pretend that they live their, which means the crew had to be human, and they had to infiltrate an imperial base, and we know the empire is almost entirely made up of humans, which again means the crew had to be human. I get it for the other scenes but for the main focuses of the show so far I think it makes sense to have a vast majority of humans
@Philipp30222 жыл бұрын
it also makes sense considering 1) that most aliens live in the outter- and mid-rim while the story so far played in the mid-rim / central-rim 2) the empire was slightly racist toward aliens and partly re-settled them from central- and some mid-rim system to the outter rim. episode 6 and 7 showed much what fixed the critic "it doesnt feel like star wars" with TIE's, storm- and shoretroopers, aliens on the beach planet, corruscant which feels like a authentic real place etc without going for the classic jedi-sith-ATAT stuff which was seen so often ^^

He's an antagonist, but I'm not sure I'd call him a villain as his intentions are noble and reasonable. This was quite an episode, all the major characters had some screen time and there was plenty to flesh out. It didn't feel slow paced to me at all. I thought it was ironic that Cassian has dodged getting caught twice for major crimes, only to be picked up the one time he is actually innocent. Shoretroopers apparently are just the beach patrol, but their placement was logical and the introduction Cassian had to the KX security droid will make his eventual relationship with K2-SO more fascinating. The funny thing is how many 1970s technology keeps showing up it Andor. Now we have credit card machines added to the Polaroid camera and old IBM monitors. I guess they've not figured out taking fingerprints (on humans at least) and putting them into a database to use as ID on criminals, but that is a good thing for Cassian as he clearly had a prior record and even with a fake name, he would have popped up. The cameo of Yularen was very nicely done and completely logical. I suspect Vel will try to get to Cassian in prison to assassinate him and probably end up helping him escape.

It was awesome to see Yularen and it was great for them to not be so obvious about it, I saw him and was wondering is this Yularen (I hate using subtitles in shows so I could not see this) and was so glad it was. It was fun to figure it out and then later see I was right. I also loved the foreshadowing done with his adopted father being arrested and executed for nothing and later Cassian is arrested for nothing.

I fucking love it! I can’t believe it, I’ve been so disappointed in Disney sw to date, rogue one was decent but nothing like this show has been. I’m so impressed with how real the interpersonal interactions are. Believable relationships and believable motivations for every character. Hell, I TEARED UP at Andors ma’s scene, talking about why she’s joining the rebellion. Her strength and love and “all out of fucks” attitude are so admirable and I can honestly say it’s the first time I’ve been misty eyed over anything sw since obi and satine in CW. I love seeing some of the day to day evil of the emperial bureaucracy. They are scary, and smart. Getting to see how they impact the galaxy instead of this vague evil organization is amazing and they’re managing it without it turning into prequel era trade federation conversations. It has purpose and sets a great tone/backdrop for the action and stakes. I’m totally bought in to the world, from the sets to the costumes, to the world building. Im so happy to have the sense that there is a huge galaxy out there, and that actions have real implications that send shockwaves across the entire empire. So stoked. Could not be more stoked. If this show is boring to you, I’m sorry. They made it for me. It’s exactly what I want to watch.

No offense to fans of rebels but this is the type of show I was hoping for many years ago when it was announced. I love this mature and believable story of the the rise of the rebellion without an over reliance on lightsabers and cameos every other episode. I almost feel like it shouldn’t have been called Andor simply because they’re doing such a good job of building up side characters that he’s not the only one I care about. The scenes with Mon Mothma and Luthen were compelling. Even the imperials are really interesting. This show is great.

Just finished this playlist. I agree with you: There are multiple faces to Star Wars, and this is one of them. I don't mind the lack of the fantastical elements, ultra-high stakes, or focus on action. I consider this series to be an interesting and needed change of modes that works well given the character it focuses on. I think this is disney's best SW show - which is fitting being that it was spawned from arguably its best SW film (by far). On a side note, It would also probably work well as a novel series.

As great as this show has been and hopefully will continue to be, this was the first episode that left a sour taste in my mouth. First of all, I loved everything having to do with Coruscant and everything to do with Ferrix. There was A LOT to love about this episode. Nonetheless, I feel like they dropped the ball at the end. The arrest-scene really didn't work for me. It irked me how casual Andor was about the whole thing, even jesting about waiting here for the Shoretrooper so he could go chase down the actual perps. This is not the same Andor that got stopped by the two cops in Episode 1. Where was that same tension, that same sense of impeding trouble? Instead, they played it out for levity and had Andor behave like cool-as-a-cucumber Han Solo. That was especially jarring coming in the same episode that showed us the flashback about what happened to his "father". Andor knows first hand how quickly you can get into massive trouble with the Empire just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Considering that flashback, this scene could have been extremely dramatic, as Andor finds himself in a similar bind. Instead, they undercut their own stakes by playing this scene for levity. Generally, not the best idea to play a scene that amounts to an (in this case) innocent bystander being choked by a law enforcement officer for levity instead of trauma... Again, lots to love about this episode, but that ending... oof.

I love how the empire’s acting, honestly. It’s textbook for how these types of things work. By drastically punishing systems, places, peoples that have nothing to do with the rebellion for the actions of a he’s essentially saying that ‘this is what will happen if _you_ don’t step up your game.’ It’s all the incentive systems need to crack down on rebel activities as hard as they can within their respective areas because it’s going to be their own people’s livelihoods on the line at the end of the day. Collective punishment is something that’s meant to make groups more insular and self policing, and this does that perfectly.

This is, without a doubt that best writing and character development we've witnessed in any live action Star Wars to date. There are so many memorable lines that portent things to come, so many authentic insights into what it takes to make a real rebellion happen, so many difficult individual choices that the various characters are clearly struggling with, it's just fantastic. This is next-level Star Wars, as far as I'm concerned, and I'm all-in.

Even just the way Kahn’s apartment looks like, and the small tv that he hears about andors heist, really harkened back to the 70s feel of Star Wars, and to those people who say this completely doesn’t feel like Star Wars, the production design is no doubt retro future 70s design, it’s perfect, and the scene where the officer was confused on what the call his superior, Sir or Mam I was expecting her to comment on that but no, she doesn’t care, like it was so on the nose in kenobi when Tala said “YOU WILL REFER TO ME AS SIIIRRRR!” Like this show is way less on the nose with the woke ideas

This episode was so fun as the whole show has been thus far and I mean that from the perspective that Star Wars often talks down to its audience especially in the Disney era with recent the recent shows, and yes that does include Mandalorian too. Rarely do any of those shows have a scene just sits, they are 'always on the move' moving from scene to scene fropping in plot, easter eggs and character and moving on; granted those episodes don't have the runtime that Andor has and granted Mando does do it better than the others however it is not immune to Disney-itus. As much of a visual and nostalgic treat it was in Mando, I would take scenes like Mon speaking to Tay at the party or Cassian's goodbye to Maarva, over the N-1 starfighter joyride scene if it meant my brain was digesting something of substance. It takes me back to watching Battlstar back in the 00s where yes I wanted to see some Cylons but this talking is still intriguing, well... most of the time. Just as all the acting in this series has been so captivating Genevieve is really starting to shine, I don't why Hollywood has benched on her for so long or why Disney hasn't utilised her, not really until now but she is so good a Mon Mothma; "smile" (a fun fact: she also plays Moira in Overwatch). I don't know what it was but the music that plays when Cassian realises that he has to leave Maarva really hit home for me, it's kinda subtle but really effective; and that smile when he hears that he inspired her to walk the Square. I don't know why he thought he would feel safe on an imperial control planet but I can imagine if he does indeed go to prison/labour camp that that may be what inspires him to care more about a rebellion by hearing the injustices from the Empire from others and thus cause him to then read Nemik's manifesto, he may even seek Luthen out in the end.

I'm one of the people that has often uttered the phrase "this doesn't feel like Star Wars" when it comes to Disney run projects and let me explain a little bit why I feel that way. One of the things that you touched on in this video, is sound track. The Swedish guy they got doing the Mandalorian, and BOB has done an admirable job with the music he's put together for those shows. I can't think of a time watching this show where I was really sucked into the show by means of the soundtrack. The story has been pretty good at times, and down right pointless at other times. I was so disappointed with the first 3 episodes that I wrote out a version I thought would've made more sense/been more interesting than the one we were given. The one thing I'll praise about this show is that I'm loving the political intrigue and bickering amongst the Imperials at the ISB. One of my biggest gripes, which is why it doesn't feel like Star Wars, is due to the fact that Andor has been largely devoid of ALIENS. Everyone is human and speaks Galactic Common, it's boring. Certainly doesn't lead to any interesting side characters, at least any memorable ones. And before anyone says it, because I know you're thinking it "But Kellen, the Empire were space racists that didn't hire aliens to be in positions of power" I know that, I'm well aware, but I think I can count on two fingers in the foreground/background of scenes in this show where I've seen some form of alien species. My other problem with this show so far which really takes me out of the moment in suspending belief that this is a show about a galaxy far far away is the props that are used. Like the very obvious use of an absolutely unmodified AK47 by our rebels. And again, before anyone uses the argument of "but Kellen, WW2 era weapons were used as props in the OT!!" Again, I'm aware of that, but that was due to the fact that at the time, SW ANH was basically a low budget scifi film, and all they did was dress up the guns a bit, rather than spend money designing new ones. That and, that was a time before the internet where that would become common knowledge, back then outside of most service people, hadn't those German style weapons. Now everyone knows what an AK47 is and looks like, and they didn't even try and dress it up at all to make it less obvious... To me that just screams laziness and it pisses me off. The other thing I noticed last episode which irked me was the use of 1970's era headphones by the radio operator. I mean, in universe this show is supposed to take place within 5 years of the battle of Yavin, and they've shown glimpses in other scenes of tables/computers that fit the empire aesthetic, but yet they didn't mimic the built in microphone like the one used on the table in the cell area of the first death star. For continuity sake it would've made more sense than a headset with a microphone on it. Also, minor gripe here, but I thought the blue milk & space cereal was stupid... They need to stop inserting things we recognize from our society into Star Wars, it just cheapens the fantasy and again makes it harder to get lost in the universe, at least for me. The show overall, has been pretty decent, but I don't understand everyone fawning over it just because it has a darker tone that we're not used to. I just wish that all Star Wars projects going forward had the same quality or better than the Mandalorian, that's the closest Disney has come to capturing the spirit of Star Wars in my eyes.

I loved this episode, it's not slow it built so much of everything that's been happening. Reminds me of Matt Stone and Trey Parker once giving story advice, about avoiding "this _and then_ this" type storytelling where there isn't much inherent consequences of actions being tied together in sequence, instead you want "but", "because," and "therefore," connecting every event which make the story feel like it's properly playing out. This is perfectly anti-episode 9s scenes like falling into the quicksand conveniently carrying the plot along, and I'd be surprised if this doesn't end up being the first Star Wars show I actually want to rewatch like the movies before. One of the best moments was learning so organically that the name Clem was taken from his adoptive father.

I love how an andor was getting sentenced by the judge they said 6 mouths, but with the new rules 6 years. Andor directly caused the new rules and it’s great how it directly affected him 😂. This goes along with the over all theme that the harder the empire squeezes their fist the more planets will fall through the cracks. I think this doesn’t just apply to planets, but also very important people who help start the rebellion (Andor).
@ellicel2 жыл бұрын
I think Syril will remain with the empire; he’s a perfect foil of Andor. Their stories are mirrored but the reverse of one another. One, a scoundrel with contempt for the law, another who finds solace in it. Both whose characters were formed (and still guided by) strong mothers, but one who is loving and encouraging and the other who is constantly fault-finding and infantalizing. Both who have a particular view of the world that is being challenged…one who will embrace change, another who will double down on what he thinks he knows. These two young men are representing how both sides, rebel and imperial, grow to be the systems we know later on. To a casual observer who is not personally oppressed, the rebels appear lawless (like Andor) and the empire stable. But through these two seasons and culminating in Rogue One, we’ll see Syril’s (and the empire’s) doggedness turn into purely a desire for self-advancement, while in contrast Andor (and the rebellion) will become self-sacrificing. I think it’ll be important to keep that contrast. But it’s a testament to the excellence of the writing that we can so easily empathize with Syril and hope for his conversion.

This episode was... dare I say it??... Very much like a certain other series I remember watching, for a good long time, about half a decade ago. It's very "Game of Thrones!" All the characters belong. Almost all the characters are deeply interesting. And the plot is nothing, if not continuously spinning closer and closer to real danger/tragedy. Which is why I am now going to refer to this show as "Galaxy of Thrones." lol
