I have a pocket trumpet and it is great to keep in the car to practice at times I get stuck in traffic that is not moving or I am waiting on getting the car serviced or just have time between appointments. It fits very nicely between my lips and the steering wheel.

There is a clown gag called "I've got another one " where the announcer keeps confiscating instruments from a would be soloist. I can see in my mind after losing the last piece of his saxophone (the mouthpiece) a clown reaching into his big coat pocket and pulling out a pocket trumpet " I've got another one ". By the way while the routine can be done by someone barely able to make a sound I have known two great clowns who are soloist quality on at least six instruments. One was Renato Fuentes Gasca who was also among the best of his era at several major circus acts, he also successfully managed the show.

Gábor Eötvös in Hungary did this act a lot, he was the son of a performance artist dynasty of over a hundred years a good musicians and one of the most famous clowns of Hungary

@@luchadorito I'm sure you mean family of circus performers. The term performance artist is less than a hundred years old. I have known many great Hungarian circus performers ,notably the teeterboard specialists The Seven Alexander's. How Alexander is a Hungarian name I will never know. Their relative Tibor Alexander who had a classy dog act via England. .Tibor spoke at least a dozen languages badly, Including Hungarian. Good to know about another great clown. My knowlede of Europeans ( or anyone else) who never worked in America (U.S, some of Mexico,and only a couple in Canada).

@@markhorton3994 Yea I guess. In hungary we say "előadóművész" for anyone who does performative arts (as opposed to "creating arts" like sculpture, painting and so on). Alexander in this context seems to be a family name but it does exist in hungary as well as the more traditional Hungarian version of the name: Sándor. Nowadays Alex is probably the most popular version of the name, followed by Sándor and Alexander is the rarest.

@@luchadorito Ah. Sifferent language, different terminology. Nothing to do with the relatively recent English term. In English also Alexander and Alex, either as the whole name or a short form are common personal names. The only people named Sandor seem to be Hungarian.

Yesterday I came across one of these as well as a soprano trombone. Being a trombonist myself I had kindly asked the seller person if I could try out the soprano trombone, but the seller person said oh you mean the slide trumpet. I got triggered. Anyway since I never had tried out a mouthpiece smaller than my own tenor trombone mouthpiece I was surprised on how easy it was for me to get air out of it, though changing notes was quite hard and I was playing loud as mess. I came really close to buying it to, it cost $200+$25 for the mouthpiece. Oh did I mention that the slide needed some Slide-O-Mix.

I have a pocket trumpet and yes you're correct it really isn't designed for conventional playing by a long shot :b. I do however love being able to take it with me on family vacations or whenever I'm traveling as it is a good way to keep me actively practicing while not at home.

You’re meant to breathe into your bell before you fit a Harmon mute so the condensation grips the cork, if not it’ll fall out of the bell in both normal and pocket trumpets.

1) It is very funny to play a tune in a BIG BAND with 4 trumpet-players all use a Pocket trumpet. 2) As far as the tune you did at the end of the video ...I prefer the sound of the Pocket trumpet.

Some years ago, l was at a scrap metal place selling some scrap, behind the man at the counter, was a small bucket full of brass scrap, and barely visible, was what appeared to be the bell of a trumpet or cornet, struggling for its life. l asked the man if he would see what it is, so he pulls it it out by the bell, and hands to me the cutest little cornet, mouthpiece still in it too, and remarkably clean, and a few small dents, he smiled and asked, can you play it? I said maybe so, l was amazed that the valves still worked, no air would go through, someone had put the valves into the wrong tubes, which l corrected. I hadn’t played in several years from high school, but amazed myself, that variations on Carnival of Venice from my Arban book, was still in my head, and now it filled the air, echoing off the walls, sweetiest sounding little cornet. I handed it back to him, he smiled and handed it back to me, said no, its yours, take it with you. Thanks for the concert! That was 20 or so years ago, but it still resides atop my piano and l play it often. A true story! 🌈🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸🎺lol!

It is real old and the inscription on the bell is hard to make out, It doesn’t look like any other that l am familiar with, ie Conn, olds, etc. l will get some brass cleaner and see if l can read it. I have a Classic Cantabile pocket trumpet made in Germany (or at least the included quality control card is German). Red lacquer finish and very sturdy. 3rd valve slide is a little loose and leaky but otherwise not at all bad. Bought from new a few years ago. I use this a lot for practice as it has more resistance than my standard trumpets & cornets, so I have to work a little harder. I only have small hands so I've found a way to hold it quite comfortably. I use my thumb in the 3rd slide and pivot it just as described here, my right thumb rests inside the main tuning slide so I have to watch not to knock it too hard or I'll flatten the pitch while playing. All in all, it's a daily workhorse trumpet for me and was definitely a good purchase.

Colin Mills the tuning slide’s pulled ALL THE WAY IN. like it can’t be pulled in anymore than it has been. If you were to have it in the cold, occasionally blowing air through it, then it would be in the normal Bb key.

Hi Trent, just a suggestion: when using the presumably high-pitch Huttl peashooter in a side-by-side comparison with a low-pitch instrument, it'd be great if you could pull the slide out as close as possible to low-pitch, so that we're not hearing everything practically a half-step higher ;-)

Got the Thomann TR 25 Bb-Pocket Trumpet, bought it instead of TR 5, cause of the full size bell. Is pretty sweet and comes with an well made case. The valves need constant oiling. I knew about that before purchasing though so it is not bothering me.

Anyone else notice that the trumpet was sharp by an entire half-step? Fingerings lined up, but the trumpet, not pocket trumpet, was stupid sharp. Is that the key that the instrument is in, or just the instrument being improperly tuned?

Trent Hamilton, you should look more into the history of a once famous pocket trumpet made by Elden Benge (1902 -1960). Mr Benge built the first collection of professional pocket trumpets, along with the trumpets he made. Mr. Benge was a principal trumpeter with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra during the turn of the century. After his retirement he started to build an improved instrument taken fr his personal instrument , a French Besson Trumpet. He made certain specifications , modified it , crafted into into a well made instrument for professional players and students of trumpet playing. The pocket trumpet which I own can match any kind of famous instrument companies that make excellent trumpets. Some of the things you say about pocket trumpets is not all true. For example, this trumpet has a pinky ring , unlike the Jupiter pocket trumpet you demonstrated. The bell of the Benge Pocket Trumpet is 5 and a half inches and any mute can fit into this particular instrument. The Benge Pocket Trumpet has excellent sound, quality intonation, and can compete with any well known trumpet brands. The Benge company disbanded when Mr. Benge was killed in a car accident in 1960. His son Donald took over the company but over the year he loss interest in continuing the company because of other interest involving table games like Conquest. He sold the specification and design plans to instrument companies like King, Selmer, Manchester, Holton, and others. But these companies couldn't match the sound quality The Benge pocket trumpet had. One company Carol Brass was was very close to to matching that particular quality sound. Donald like his father was also killed in a car accident in 2007. This is true true historical facts so next time Mr. Hamilton do some more research on the history of brass instruments, THANK YOU!

Do more bends in tubing make it easier to bend notes? Sounds dumb but... the more you spiral it the bigger the difference between inside/outside radius, so tube length is kinda both inside and outside path and everything in between.

Could you do a video on naming conventions for trombones? I have issues with what we call a "bass" trombone, in that it is basically an oversized tenor trombone that has the exact same length of tubing. What we call a contrabass in F should be a contralto trombone, and the BBb/CC trombones are the true contrabass. It's probably not that big an issue, just something that always bugged me.
