To make a long story short, the song is about how Tuomas (keyboard) felt after they had to fire Tarja (first vocalist), he did that in a open letter and got so many backlash from fans that he was so down, and thought of suicide or disband the band. Luckely with help from his Parents and friends he came over it and wrote this song, so he is commiting suicide in the song as you could see when he made the troat slash and luckely not in real life. You also see Emppu and Marko stand by him to show him support at the end of the song, cuz this song means a lot to Tuomas, he usualy also ask the technics to shut his earphones down so he can't hear the lyrics.Thank you for reacting to this Masterpiece, Lots of love from The Netherlands

Yes, in the past Tuomas has asked the sound technicians to mute the sound of the vocal line in his ears because it was too emotional for him. But i read in an interview that that is no longer needed. He has overcome it and is much better now.

And the sad thing was, Tarja was going to leave after that one last live tour anyway to go solo. However, during the last song at the last concert she left the stage (wich was part of the show), but after the show was over, Tarja was nowhere to be found (like, for doing after-concert-stuff like meet & greet with fans, etc). They got informed that she literally flew into her backstage room, changed outfits and jumped into a taxi to board a plane to get to her fiance (to wherever he was at that moment). And that was the point where the guys have had enough and Tuomas wrote that letter and the official statement. At least, Anette had the decency to be voice-sick AND pregnant when she left Nightwish for good. Even though it was right in the middle of their world tour in 2012/2013 (it was amazing and extremely funny at the same time how 2 female singers from another band jumped in and saved the secret gig concert, each with a stack of printed out lyrics in their hands).

"I have so mixed emotions, but they are good ones". That is have we all Nightwish "sold-our-souls" fans feel when we listen to especially this epic song. The same feeling although it's the 100th time you listen to it. There is no other explanation, this is a masterpiece of composition, a rollercoaster emotional ride that takes you to hidden and forbidden places in your soul. Thanks for the nice reaction.

This song is almost analogous to the 7 stages of grief put into a symphony -- in poetry and music. There is bitterness, sadness (as low as the depths of the Pacific), despair/anger (Dark Passion Play) ... and finally acceptance and peace (Mother & Father). His parents obviously helped him get to the last step (last portion of the song). It takes you through great highs and lows. It is very much like watching an emotional and intense movie. It was written about the Tuomas' feelings about losing the group's first lead singer. Tuomas is the band's main composer & keyboardist. He grew up with the original lead singer and decided to make the band do symphonic metal, since she had an opera background. That lead singer got married and decided to leave the band and go solo and told them that the next album would be her last -- so they decided to let her got right then. It took them a while to find Floor, but this song is amazing from her. It showcases all of her vocal skills and range. The song tries to capture his intense feelings then and through to healing, along with help from his parents. One interesting note ... there is a child's voice near the beginning of the song that says "The end" -- speaking of the end of the original band and the end of that special friendship. Near the very end of the 5-part song, you hear that same voice say "The Beginning", speaking of the band and of Tuomas in particular picking up the pieces and moving on with their lives after losing his lifelong friend. When you see Tuomas (keyboardist) singing along with Floor near the end of the song, you can see the FEELING he has for the song.

That is what Nightwish songs do to you. I hope this will help.... Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a female fronted symphonic metal band. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu. Then there is Troy Donockley who is a multi-instrulmentalist and does vocals. Jukka is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai became the drummer and as of now is a permanent member. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. the 2nd one was Anette Olzon (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from the Netherlands.( power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit live ( Floor). I hope this helps. I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. Their music has gotten me through some tough times. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol

Yes, this makes you emotional, but just imagine how this feels for me (and thousands of those), who lived all this with them back in 2005-2007. I'm not going to repeat what others have said already, but this song hit me quite hard, when I finally gave it a chance. I had been their fan since 1998, and I abandoned them after Tarja incident, and came back with Floor. When I first heard this, I can tell that it was very emotional moment. Especially this line "under the same pale moon, whose guiding light chose you, chose you all" got me, because Tuomas was clearly refering to beginning of Nightwish, when they just sat around camp fire and had dreams. They never supposed to be anything big, just acoustic mood music. No albums, no gigs, definitely not touring, but that moon chosed differently. I was never mad for Tuomas, but I still abandoned them, because I didn't like Anette (2nd singer). It just sounded wrong, too poppy. Now I regret that I didn't give her (and Nightwish) a proper chance, because these songs are masterpieces. Many still blame Tuomas from firing Tarja *, but the thing is, that when band chemistry is gone, it's gone. You have basically two options, fire someone or break the band. I'm just glad they chosed this route. * Marko (the bassist) have said that, it was decision they made together, and that he was the one, who finally said it out loud first. Just the way they chosed to do it was very immature (open letter).

Olli-Pekka Tervo in a way us fans are responsible for this. It’s a valuable lesson to look deeper into things. Nightwish is more than just Tarja or Annette or Floor. Or even Tuomas. As with most things in life there is a depth to be understood and we should never act on the immediate negative emotional response.

I thought this was the MOST engaged reaction in the history of reaction videos. Imagine if he KNEW the backstory? When you combine genius with no limit to vulnerability, there are no limits. I'm new to Nightwish but their talent is rearing it's ugly head in my heart. They've made some AMAZING music. It's funny, to me, both Tarja and Anette were very talented, but limited. Floor is extremely talented and has no limits. Isn't it amazing where fate takes you? This is why you ride out the storm and endure the hardships - you never know when life is gonna Floor you!

Probably people might have already answered it for you by now. But if they don't... The song is composed like if it was a theatrical show that has 5 acts on it (that's why you see the titles of the act when that section of the song starts). The genius of this is how he put it all together. Nightwish has a bunch of this type of songs, they are known to be the "RollerCoaster of emotions". They took you up and down smoothly just like that, they make you laugh, rock hard, cry, everything you can imagine...

This is such a great reaction! There's a reason why Nightwish fans are so passionate, you see? They get to your emotions like that. I have lost count of how many times I've watched this performance and it always gets to me. This one, as people have already pointed out, is extremely personal for Tuomas Holopainen (keyboards). He's the musical genius behind Nightwish, the band is his brainchild. He is, as some fans like to call him, the maestro. And I believe this is his magnum opus, even more than The Greatest Show On Earth (another behemoth of a song). It is about dealing with depression, losing the will to live and overcoming it with the help of your loved ones. It's a lyrical suicide and resurrection. He felt on the verge of taking his life but instead of doing it he poured it into paper. Funny that you kept saying 'this is music' because when I think about the story behind this song I can't help thinking that this is why music exists. :) And even though you didn't know all this background info I think you catched a lot of the content, you're very sensitive!

Hi Nephi - glad you LOVED this! "The Poet and the Pendulum" is quite possibly the pinnacle of Nightwish's emotion expressed in song; specifically those of the composer/keyboardist Tuomas. *However* to be a true devotee (LOL) you need to see The Greatest Show on Earth. My favorite performance is from Tampere, Finland. It is, in a word, glorious. Hi! It's nice to be back & watch this epic song by Tuomas performed by Nightwish & Floor on vocals. I like to watch your reactions as you usually know what you're talking about. However, did you notice that it took precisely 3 minutes from when the young boys voice had said these words "Now I only have 3 minutes and counting" to the point when the pendulum "kills" Tuomas & he makes his hand gesture of cutting his throat? This alone shows how much attention to detail Tuomas pays in his composing/songwriting.

I'm so glad you've finally seen it. I was one of the people pushing you to watch, because I knew you'd LOVE IT. But I didn't know you would be so moved by it, it was beautiful to see your touching reaction. This song really puts you on a journey, and I believe that's really what being a "symphony"(symphonic metal) is all about. It has many parts to it. Telling a story. This story was based on Tuomas' depression after they lost Tarja, and I believe he was feeling suicidal when he wrote it. Its partly based on reality and partly fictional, obviously. He turned that feeling into beauty. Art. Floor did what Floor does, she showed us all facets of her voice. Very high and CONSTANT belting on the chorus(such stamina!), and all the head voice for the softer parts, with some growls thrown in in-between! The band gave me chills too. You made my day with this video.

I totally agree with you, Nephi. For me personal this is not only the best Nightwish song, but one of the best songs ever. It is epic, takes you on a journey, plays with your emotions, it is rich, detailed, perfect in every sense. At points a bit painful, than healing again, breathtakingly beautiful. It never fails to pour emotions out of me, even if I have watched and listened to this performance at least a couple of dozen times now. Nightwish is a great band, had a great singer with Tarja, a good singer with Anette (she was better than most Nightwish fans gives her credit for) but with Floor it is really something else, it seems that Nightwish is finally complete now as a band. They fit so perfectly together.

Great reaction, a truly great song can effectively communicate the emotions even without the listener knowing the backstory, which this one does. What no one mentions about this song most of the time, is that it was greatly influenced by the Edgar Allen Poe story of the same name. That's where a lot of the imagery comes from because no one does dark quite like Poe did.

It's funny you said at the end Floor sounded like weeping. I've always thought it sounded like an angel crying over the loss of what many consider (Nightwish fans) the worlds greatest poet and song writer. In this song he commits suicide rather than doing it in real life. It's about all the emotions and turmoil he felt after they let Tarja go and the blow-back from the fans and media over it. By the way...I can't wait to see you react to The Greatest Show On Earth (Tampere 2015). It's another one with several "parts". It's also a little longer than this one.🤘👍

I understand how you feel. Roller Coaster of emotions is one of the most common statements people say after viewing the musical production. It is a story which unfolds in 5 parts. It took me several days to recover my emotional balance.Much of the lyrical content is used metaphorically to express how Tuomas was reacting to the guilt and fan hatred he received after firing Tarja, the 1st Nightwish singer. He was so depressed that he felt suicidal. Thank God he decided to play it out in this song instead of real life. Tuomas is a very emotional person and has always preached to his band mates that Nightwish is about the music and the fans. Not about money and fame. He felt that he had let the fans down and thrown away his musical dream. Tarja was his muse and inspired him to write these types of unique songs for her operatic vocals. This song was the opener on the next CD release "Dark Passion Play" with the 2nd singer, Annette. That is why this song starts out with the songwriters dead. Tuomas was dead inside and no longer inspired to compose music. It took 2 years to find a new singer and most all of the music on DPP was inspired by the breakup with Tarja. It you notice at the end of this song right before the haunting crying part, you hear Floor whisper "The beginning". This refers to starting a new era with Annette as the vocalist. The speaking parts about raped again and again is once again a metaphor for how Tuomas felt regarding his songwriting. He poured his heart and soul into these compositions both musically and lyrically and Tarja did not feel or sing with the emotion required for these types of musical performances. She also felt and told him that she could leave Nightwish anytime. She was Nightwish and did not need the band. This is the type of attitude that necessitated the firing. It's pretty deep stuff. That is why everyone always tells reactors to get familiar with the backstory before listening. You my friend are so in tune with music and the emotional aspect of songs taken to the level of performance Art that you still felt it heavily! Well done! You are correct Tuomas is a genius composer and lyricist. Floor bring the story to life and adds the touch of emotion and beauty required to make it a timeless masterpiece. A true artistic treasure! You will feel better soon. You just need a couple of days to process your emotional reaction. It happens to all of us on the beautiful and tragic performance. Be well my friend!

Watching your face listening to this masterpiece was a feast of recognition. If this doesn't stir your heart and squeeze your soul, what does? Suicide is not about destroying life, it's not murder. It is an escape from unbearable mental pain. The beauty of this piece is the creativity and artistry Tuomas was able to generate to find an alternative way out of his personal pain. If you can do that with music, calling him a master of composing is an understatement. I keep coming back to this piece in spite of the fact that it hurts but also soothes. Thanks for your reaction, I've been waiting for this!

The mix with Edgar Allan Poe's "The pit and the pendulum" is something that complicates the understanding of the song without knowing the background. And yet, I am one of the fans that prefer reactions to this song without prior knowledge. To experience the emotions hidden within this masterpiece. Which you did. Great reaction.

Toumas is genius. He write and compose 95% of Nightwish songs. This song and The Greatest Show on Earth are his masterpieces. Please react to: Romantisade, Song of Myself and Ghost River Live at Wacken Open Air 2013, The Greatest Show on Earth and The Islander Live at Tampere Show 2015, Shudder Before The Beautiful, 7 Days To The Wolves and While Your Lips Are Still Red Live at Wembley Arena 2016.

Excellent reaction. You've painted yourself into a corner now buddy, you've done Ghost Love Score, you've now done Poet and the Pendulum. You have to do The Greatest Show on Earth now. Poet is the emotional masterpiece, The Greatest Show on Earth is humanities masterpiece.

Since you asked "how do they come up with this?", I think I can shed some light on that. Among the greatest muse's an artist can have are the following: unrequited love, lost love, loss of faith and the regaining of it, betrayal, and severe depression and recovery. Tuomas, had more than one of those things going on when he felt that firing Tarja was required, and the subsequent backlash by the Nightwish fanbase. A creative person uses this kind of "negative" energy to produce remarkable things.

One of the great emotional roller coasters that Nightwish delivers and Floor, well she gave this song every emotion it needed, anger, hopelessness, rage, fear etc.. and she dragged you along on that ride as you experienced every high and low. Imagine being there and within 30 seconds they start into another epic song!!! A Nightwish concert is an experience in musical nirvana that drains you and stirs your soul completely. Great reaction and glad you went into it cold. I really enjoyed you and your brain trying to process what was going on and what the song meant as you were being slammed from one emotion to another. Well done and one of the best reaction to this period!!! You might need an upbeat song or two after this to get you and your brain back on track. When you think you are ready for another epic try Greatest Show on Earth LIVE from Tampere, Finland (kzbin.info/www/bejne/ambFo616f7CNadE) another emotional but happier roller-coaster ride.

Now you got it clearly, why we always say that Tuomas is genius... :D Whole band is so good! Try new-old song NIGHTWISH - Devil & The Deep Dark Ocean - Live In Buenos Aires (OFFICIAL LIVE VIDEO) from 2018 tour. it is 20 years old song, but "updated" with Floor and Kai. It is like looking musical fireworks. When group of talented persons take old song and make it feeling a new song...!

Maybe you noticed that Marco and Emppu went up to Tuamas at the end of the song. That's their way of showing respect for him and to make sure tat he is ok. And this song is so emotionel to Tuomas that they play it very rarely and most of the time when they do, he unplugges Floor's vocals in his earplug so he can't hear her sing it. Oh how many times I have cried to this masterpiece.

It's Tuomas's (keyboardist) musical suicide, as it were. It was apparently this, or actual suicide after the split with Tarja, his friend and the original singer of Nightwish. The man is genuis and great poet.

And you didn't even know the meaning behind it! Grab some tissues (like a ton) before hearing it again now

I found your channel a while ago while on a DImash spree. Nightwish has been my favorite band since the 90's, but I never thought I would see you reacting to it due to the genre. It seems Beste Zangers has opened a lot of people up to a genre that a lot of people overlook.

I'm commenting early, well early cause you are only on the Home part. I decided to pause watching it and go back to the beginning and finish cooking supper and went ahead and eat cause just seeing your face up to that point is enough for me to realize that I want to be able to watch the whole video without pausing it a bunch. You truly feel the music I can tell and you are right this IS music but it is MUSIC that is also ART and that I think you can tell. I wish to watch this reaction without distractions so I'll be back in about 45 mins. So an hourish later I came back to watch this uninterrupted and I was correct in doing so. For me, I wish that I had been able to listen to this song years ago when I lost my younger sister, who passed away due to complications from being hit by a drunk driver. (She was left paralyzed from the chest down at the age of 19). We only had her for 3 years after that accident and I won't lie, I took a lot of blame on myself for her dying. Not something I speak about often as it is still a painful subject for our family, but finally hearing this after all these years with Floor singing it, I wouldn't say I was "healed". More like finding acceptance within myself knowing I did everything I could that day to save her and it was completely out of my hands and in God's. My only thought, which is strange since I try not to post anything this long is simply this, we never know when a particular piece of music will touch someone and in what way it may help that person who may not have anyone they can turn to and may be the only thing that holds them together. I am deeply grateful for those musicians and songwriters who write the music they do and hope that if someone needs that certain something to get them through a difficult time they come across a piece of music or a person that is willing to be there for them.

Symphonic metal allows them to go in several different directions with their music.. They have a trashing metal side with songs like "Romanticide", "Song of Myself" or "Dark chest of Wonders".. They have a very celtic sound in the song, E'lan.. Then these long epis multipart plays set to metal music songs like "Ghost Love Score"" Poet and the Pendulum" or The Greatest Show on Earth" it's up to you.. or like me.. I like it all..
