Every single attempt of the U$ to curb Сhina's progress and development has not only failed but also massively backfired. TV analysts (who habitually do less analysing than they simply repeat whatever buzzwords are currently in the media) are saying Huawei's achievement is mostly symbolic, as if the symbolism doesn't really matter. Yet, what they call "symbolic" is the most important part of this whole thing. America's tech sanctions on China are meant to prevent China from making high end chips for reasons that go beyond economics, therefore Huawei's achievement has significance beyond economics. In an effort to downplay that non-economic significance they call it "symbolic". They want us to believe that only the "economic" or business issues are what really matters, but that smells like a lie because it is a lie. Whether Huawei is already able to produce these chips at scale or not; whether they are already able to produce them cost-effectively or not, is not the main issue. The most important thing is that they can make a chip which may not be 7 nanometer but which has the same capabilities as a 7 nanometer chip. That means they have found their own alternative to the 7 nanometer chip, and that's a major achievement by any standard. This means what really matters is not so much the chip itself as the methodology. The real question therefore is whether they can use the same methodology in the future to "clone" 4 nanometer and 2 nanometer chips; and if the answer is yes, then my friends, that is way, way more than "symbolic". Issues of scale and efficiency will follow: That is how all other technological breakthroughs begin.
