Holy crap! This was at the Rang Bhavan. The first live concert I ever saw, a couple of weeks before my 17th birthday. I reached there early afternoon, hoping to get a ticket, but no such luck. Finally, talking to a few others, who were also desperate for tickets, figured we might be able to see them from the Elphinstone Technical School, the back side of which faces Rang Bhavan. There, on the 1st floor, going from classroom to classroom, finally found a room which was facing the cafeteria. Looked out the window, and noticed a drainage pipe. Promptly proceeded to climb down the pipe, and I was in Rang Bhavan.... straight into the hands of a havaldaar!!! The constable tried to pull me off to a side, hoping to extract some money. With a straight face, I told him "are you nuts? If I had money, you think I would come in this way?" That bewildered him long enough for me to just run and loose myself in the crowd. Even though I missed about 15-20 minutes, what a concert!!!

There's an anecdote shared by a friend who attended that Rang Bhavan concert . Seems in the middle of the concert, a raucous fan jumped up on the stage to dance in his hash induced fervor. The Bombay police constables clambered up to chase him away, when, either Sting or Andy yelled at them, "Get the fuck off the stage!- we are The Police!"😂

This was the pinnacle in their career. Long before the commercialism of Synchronicity, there’s still a raw energy present here which evolved from their shows in the 70s which was lost in later years when everything became over rehearsed. Doesn’t seem like 43 years ago but I was so jealous of my my art teacher (Neil Gray) who attended this show and took photos. He always use to say his overriding memory of the gig was a huge cloud of hash floating above the crowd!

I recall Sting had nearly lost his voice but Andy & Stewart more than made up for it. It was a heady mix of Parsi ladies (who had organised this first ever rock concert in India), touts, "time pass" guys, posh girls, rock aficianodos, hawaldars (the real police - looking rather bewildered) ... only in India! And 42 years later their music is as compelling as ever.
@amritsagar4964 Жыл бұрын
I was there at the gig. There were a lot of posh people in the first two or three rows, rich couples, the ladies in fancy sarees and all that. They had no real idea who The Police were, they would have thought they're gonna hear something like ABBA. After a couple of songs the posh folks at the front left, and us proles from the back moved in. At 5:46, the guy talking to Sting must be my old friend Vivek Basrur, since deceased (hard to recognize his young face of 40+ years ago). Also in later gigs in Bombay/Mumbai, Vivek was always near the stage trying to meet the band. R.I.P. Vivek.

Thanks so much for sharing this! Brought back so many fantastic memories. I had no idea that The Police toured India back then. I was fortunate enough to catch the show in Sydney just a few weeks before this. I'm now so old that no-one I know even remembers them. Would love to meet a fellow fan next time I'm visiting Mumbai so we can reminisce ;) .

They only played this one gig in India. But they sort of kicked the door in for other rock acts to follow. Next came Hanoi Rocks, Osibisa and Kraftwerk. It was hilarious to see the Indian audience try to dance like robots to the sound of Kraftwerk.
