I woke up in the middle of the night with that line in my head, sat down at the piano and had written it in half an hour. The tune itself is generic, an aggregate of hundreds of others, but the words are interesting. It sounds like a comforting love song. I didn't realize at the time how sinister it is. I think I was thinking of Big Brother, surveillance and control. ~Sting Nice Words U.U

This is my favourite ever live version of the song- Sting's vocal is absolutely outstanding (I especially love the way he sings after 4:00), the acapella breakdown is really cool, plus it's great to have the piano/keyboard parts which I think was missing on the Synchronicity tour- also cool to see Andy playing it on his Telecaster rather than the Strat, sounds a little bit different! They sounded at the top of their game at this concert :D

It’s September 2022….All our lives are chronicled by tunes… in 1982 youth drives that throwing caution to the wind kind of thing ! .. From Wisconsin to Colorado on a whim ,to reconnect with that hot crush again! .. A party at Scotty’s , the Police vinyl is playing , we all are high on that devils lettuce , illegal back then, legal now , lol who knew? Kristy you had J. in your head & I had E. in mine .. who knew our friendship would have held all this time ! You got with J. that night & I got with E. Yep it’s true , we WERE YOUNG WILD & FREE! ! This song made me think of you E. back then & now still too! And our connection lasted all these years & it’s still new! You were 23, I was 21, an older man I thought you were & you were mine At that time! .. Oh that heat of youth dwindled with time, but this song brings me back , every time! To that fun we had , on your bike, looking for fun just around that corner on a Friday night! Not a care in the world oh you WERE the “only one for me”, now we laugh back , at our naivety! I’m 61 now & your 63, traveled so many different roads , but when I hear The Police, the roads all connect & we are all back again, to that party at Scotty’s, where it all began! Amazing that one song brought so many of us together back then , and still has the power to do it again! Here’s to 1983! And Scotty’s party! And Kristy & E! Lol!

This is one of the most misinterpreted songs ever. It is about an obsessive stalker, but it sounds like a love song. Some people even used it as their wedding song. The Police frontman Sting wrote it after separating from his first wife, Frances Tomelty. In a 1983 interview with the New Musical Express, Sting explained: "I think it's a nasty little song, really rather evil. It's about jealousy and surveillance and ownership." Regarding the common misinterpretation of the song, he added: "I think the ambiguity is intrinsic in the song however you treat it because the words are so sadistic. On one level, it's a nice long song with the classic relative minor chords, and underneath there's this distasteful character talking about watching every move. I enjoy that ambiguity. I watched Andy Gibb singing it with some girl on TV a couple of weeks ago, very loving, and totally misinterpreting it. (Laughter) I could still hear the words, which aren't about love at all. I pissed myself laughing."
