Lyrics:
Every breath you take and every move you make
Every bond you break, every step you take, I'll be watching you
Every single day, every word you say
Every game you play, every night you stay, I'll be watching you
Oh can't you see, you belong to me
How my poor heart aches with every step you take
Every move you make and every vow you break
Every smile you fake, every claim you stake, I'll be watching you
Since you've gone I've been lost without a trace
I dream at night I can only see your face
I look around, but it's you I can't replace
I feel so cold and I long for your embrace
I keep crying baby, baby, please
Oh can't you see, you belong to me
How my poor heart aches with every step you take
Every move you make and every vow you break
Every smile you fake, every claim you stake, I'll be watching you
Every move you make, every step you take, I'll be watching you
I'll be watching you
(Every breath you take, every move you make)
(Every bond you break, every step you take)
I'll be watching you
(Every single day, every word you say)
(Every game you play, every night you stay)
I'll be watching you
(Every move you make, every vow you break)
(Every smile you fake, every claim you stake)
I'll be watching you
(Every single day, every word you say)
(Every game you play, every night you stay)
I'll be watching you
(Every breath you take, every move you make)
(Every bond you break, every step you take)
I'll be watching you
(Every single day, every word you say)
(Every game you play, every night you stay)
I'll be watching you
(Every move you make, every vow you break)
(Every smile you fake, every claim you stake)
I'll be watching you
I'll be watching you
(Every single day, every word you say)
(Every game you play, every night you stay)

This little masterpiece (like almost all their songs, IMHO) was the 1st and main single extracted from "Sincronicity" 1983 LP and it won so many prizes around the world that year... Was it just the dualism between the sinister text and the perceived "love song ballade" atmosphere? Because, IMHO we can't simply ascribe it to the fact that many don't speak/understand english or they are not listening to the words. Anyway, this part is pasted from Songfacts: "In a 1983 interview with the New Musical Express, Sting explained: "I think it's a nasty little song, really rather evil. It's about jealousy and surveillance and ownership." Regarding the common misinterpretation of the song, he added: "I think the ambiguity is intrinsic in the song however you treat it because the words are so sadistic. On one level, it's a nice long song with the classic relative minor chords, and underneath there's this distasteful character talking about watching every move. I enjoy that ambiguity"

@Jason Cummings: Between 1965 and 2013 was the best music with great artists [ with the odd crap one of course ], after that music went downhill and every body has robotic voices with the over use of the vocoder that used to be used for a psychedelic effect, not used to disguise lack of talent.

I think it is awesome to have a song about a pissed of rejected partner. I'm sure we can all think of other songs that have this same sentiment. We all go to dark places at times in our lives. Sometimes very dark, very angry. This song captures so many dark emotions. That's what makes it great.

it's not creepy. if you ignore what sting said about it, and you don't take every word literally(like in most songs), you just have a song about someone who is in love but got rejected/has no chance/didn't try... the only line that sounds a bit possesiv is the "you belong to me" one, and i can probably find at least 10 romantic movie scenes with the same line. the rest is just what everyone in love does, watch the one they love. (and no, as i said not literally every step, breath or move, but every second one can get. just like back in school/collage where we all watched that one person once he/she entered the room). so if he wanted or not, he wrote a pretty good song about love.

Lyrics: Every breath you take. And every move you make. Every bond you break. Every step you take, I'll be watching you. Every single day and every word you say. Every game you play. Every night you stay, I'll be watching you. Oh can't you see, you belong to me How my poor heart aches. With every step you take. Every move you make and every vow you break. Every smile you fake, every claim you stake. I'll be watching you Since you've gone I've been lost without a trace I dream at night, I can only see your face. I look around but it's you I can't replace. I feel so cold and I lone for your embrace. I keep crying baby baby please. Oh can't you see, you belong to me. How my poor heart aches. With every step you take. With every move you take and every vow you break. Every smile you fake, every claim you stake. I'll be watching you. Every move you make. Every step you take, I'll be watching you. I'll be watching you(Every breath you take. Every move you make, every bond you break. Every step you take.) I'll be watching you(Every single day and every word you say. Every game you play, every night you stay.) I'll be watching you(Every move you make and every vow you break. Every smile you fake, every claim you stake.) I'll be watching you(Every single day and every word you say. Every game you play. Fun fact: this is not a love song. It was written by Sting about his recent ex-wife at the time, and while it might have started off as a love song it quickly became something much more creepy. He once said on a radio interview: “One couple told me ‘Oh we love that song; it was the main song played at our wedding!’ I thought, ‘Well, good luck.’”

It's an example of how a song can "escape" its artist. Sting: it's about an unhealthy obsession and an ode to being a stalker. To the public: it's an ethereal romantic ballad of undying devotion. Bruce Springsteen had the same thing happen with "Born in the USA." Springsteen: it's a downbeat song about growing-up hard in working class America. To everyone else: it's a soaring patriotic anthem. The artist may have intended one thing, but the listening public heard something else. Neither Sting nor Springsteen have reason to complain: those misinterpreted by the public songs were both massive hits.

Very few people can write a song about a stalker and make it a banger. 😆 It takes skill. When asked why he looks so angry in the video Sting himself said, "I think the song is very, very sinister and ugly and people have actually misinterpreted it as being a gentle little love song, when it's quite the opposite." Likewise very few guys could have pulled off "Don't Stand so Close to Me" which starts out describing the common problem young or attractive teachers have where they become the focus of a teenage crush, but then gets pretty dark. All the time sounding cheerful. Those songs end up feeling transgressive rather than creepy. Like you're in on a naughty secret that the song is much darker than it seems at first. Very few artists could pull that off. It's not a matter of "the times" either, those songs were dark at the time.
