This song is like the ultimate stalker song. But when it came out in the 80s, people didn't really 'get' that people stalked other people, or how dangerous/frightening it was. Lots of people saw it as a romantic love song. People even used it as their wedding song! Sting has said in interviews he never really understood that last bit. Even the filmography in the video shows how creepy it is, with the light shifting from one side of his face to the other. Fun fact: Sting (Gordon Sumner) was an English teacher before Police made it big. The song 'Don't Stand So Close to Me' is based on his time as a teacher. Other Police songs I recommend: Roxanne (about a man in love with a prostitute), Don't Stand So Close To Me, Every Little Thing She Does is Magic, King of Pain (one of my favorites), Spirits in the Material World, Synchronicity, Walking on the Moon, and definitely Wrapped Around your Finger (the video with the most chance of burning down the studio). Sting solo songs: Englishman in New York, Fields of Gold, Fortress Around Your Heart, Russians, Shape of my Heart, Soul Cake (a traditional song based on a Halloween/Samhain tradition), Mo Ghille Mear (an Irish traditional song), All for Love, Brand New Day.

The drummer Stewart Copeland named the band as The Police before there were other members. His father was a co-founder of CIA, his brother had a record label called International Recording Syndicate (IRS) and another brother had a talent agency called Frontier Booking International (FBI). On top of that, Copeland's last name starts with "cop" and he had a band called Klark Kent (as in law enforcer Superman). Looking for band mates, Copeland met first singer-bassist Gordon Sumner, who had been nicknamed as Sting (he wore black and yellow striped sweater he had received from his girlfriend and looked like a bee). Sting also means an undercover cop. The IRS and FBI guys were now his agents. Then Copeland and Sting met guitarist Henry Padovani and formed a trio. Their sound was minimalist and artistic so they preferred wearing black like British policemen. Afterwards Andy Summers replaced Padovani but the police theme was there to stay.

@TwinsthenewTrend One of the things I like the most about your reactions is you give me a new generations insight of songs I grew up listening to. I was just singing the words, but you make me reflect on the meaning, which makes songs from my childhood new to me too.

I had a roommate that listened to the Diddy tribute to Biggie Smalls so many times, that when I hear this song I keep waiting for Faith Evans to belt out “thinking’ of the day, when you went away....” .

That took me back to the 80's like a rocket sled on rails!! 😃 One of the 80's GOATS!!! And if I remember it was in the school dance scene at the end of season two on Stranger Things.

Had a chance to meet Sting in person and actually chatted with him for a bit. He is as brilliant and gracious as he seems. Congrats on the kudos you got from Sting on Jimmy Fallon show! Twins, check out or look at adding any songs from the greatest hits of The Police for future reacts. All Hits!

'Stranger Things" is right on the nose. This came out in the early 80s when I was in junior high, just like the characters on that show. You're getting better at identifying the era of the music you review. So awesome that Sting saw your video and loved it. I saw The Police in concert about a decade ago. They are music legends. It was one of the best concerts I've ever attended. Cheers!
