I'm from Poland and there was a really big deal about both movie and book, not only, because (let's be honest) it isn't a masterpiece of polish art and yet it is selling pretty good and we don't want t h i s to be a significant mark of polish culture in foreginers' perspective, but also in Poland there is still huge taboo in terms of sexuality. We are still very christian country and of course church isn't the only reason why it is that big problem in society, but it plays quite big role when it comes to polish mentality. Big part of polish society still views homosexuality as an issue, thinks that some women are responsible for being raped, blames teenagers for having sex or eventually getting pregnant, rather then blame the fact that there is litterally no sexual education in schools, also now this change of abortion law, which can basicly dangerous for any woman getting pregnant and yet it is Poland where such movie is produced. A movie showing and normalizing (!) sexual violence, rape (there was huge conversation about the scene where Massimo abuses a woman in a plane, when the author was accused of promoting rape she basiclly said that she founds it sexy and she claims to identify with Laura) it also shows women dependence, which some women can find as ok for them, but we need to remember that Laura was kidnapped and also such content is promoted in a country where women are still sometimes viewed as the weaker, less intelligent, too sensitive and too emotional ones(fortunately I think it's changing). I'm fifteen and I can't count how many times I have been sended to kitchen, told to not wear that dress because what will boys think of me, or the opposite wear something more girly, asked if I'm on my period when frustrated, advised to lose weight to be more atractive, but not to gain muscles, my opinion was viewed as less important or I was tought to maybe not pick up this chess tournament because it's more of a guy's thing. I had so many conversation with my (also just fifteen!) classmates about being called or even touched in a way we don't want to even by complete strangers. But also when it comes to boys, I can only imagine how much pressure they get to be "real men", it's so often said that "boys don't cry", it just puts them in this stereotypical character of strong male earning money for a family, treating women in elegant but also so sexualized way, as a real "gentelman" should. So in my opinion this movie shows only very toxic way of treating sex and sexuality and creates such wrong picture of "the roles" in a society that apparently boys and girls are supposed to fit in, in a country that it is already such huge issue.

@@franciszkaszczurow6054 Well I'm happy for you that you have found a place and society that is that supportive, but I was living in both small town and Wrocław and from my experience I can tell that it's still an issue. Of course it's better, safer in a big city, but women are still sexualised everywhere and nobody seems to care about that except the victims themselves. Comparing to for example Norway where my older sister lives there's huge difference in treating women. By telling people that Poland is the safest place on this planet based only on your experience you're misguiding them. We have restrictive abortion law (if you look at the map you can see that we are among African countries), which now instead of being adjusted to European Standards was changed to even more restrictive, which was decision of goverment that is more supportive for church, old people raised in comunism and nationalists than to young generation, women or lgbtqiap+ community. I would love to see those statistics you're talking about tho and the source of information they're based on, so if you could find a link and share it with me I would be grateful.

The thing is, this could be a romance with escapism, adventure, hot sex and chemistry without all the abuse. Take the kidnap way and just make him invite her to travel europe with him, he asks for one year of her attention. It's still dangerous and unrealistic. But you make it the heat of the moment, she's going head on into a new life. It's a fantasy, so okay. But make it her choice to go, make him respect her, they don't need sexual abuse to be hot... But as it is right now it's a few scenes way from being horror... Or just change the edited and music and done. It's horror

There are some women who are sometimes repressed sexually to the point where to them the only possible way they would ever give into their sexual desires (and in some ways feel loved and cared for, hence all these shopping sprees) was if they're forced upon them, and books provide a safe place for them to do it without affecting their life. Do I think it's healthy? HELL NO. Do I think books like this should go away... it's hard to say. I unfortunately don't think these novels will be going away any time soon. The day it is will be when sexuality becomes destigmatized. It has been getting better, more people are asking for consent to be mentioned more in fiction and in other ways there have been both more and less of these kind of books, however I think 50 shades is bringing these films from a shrinking genre back into a spotlight, and it's going to set romance back. Basically I wouldn't mind it if it were books or some sort of indie film market as there will always be one but... It's also hard because if we keep in mind the author and the intent they stated with the book series she is from Poland one of the most conservative EU Western Block Countries that has always done things that I can only describe as extreme conservative christian views? One example below but Trigger Warning: Abortion talk . . . There's been some news recently that in Poland they just revoked allowing any sort of abortion even for medical reasons, with some stating it's to the degree that you must be forced to term even if the child is stillborn etc. . . . The author stated she wants to bring women talking about their sexuality more openly which is why she partially wrote the books, it certainly sounds noble enough, though it makes me wonder with 50 shades and now this film under netflix going mainstream if it's ok for these big corps to be advertising and potentially preying on sexually repressed women through unhealthy representation???

this movie reminds me of EXACTLY the type of wattpad fanfiction I would read in high school. like I literally have read fanfiction that is this story to the T. when you're a teenager, and you don't understand consent and the violence, it is glamorous and it seems fun. but as an adult, it just bores me off and is not enthralling at all. and the violation of consent just makes me angry and upset, it's not sexy to me, personally.

@jenna.livingston4 жыл бұрын
I also feel like part of it has to do with privileged teenage fantasy. It sounds fun if you've lived a sheltered life. Like in my case, I thought this type of stuff was just fun until I got my first job in high-school and was sexually harassed to the point that I thought a certain customer was stalking me. It scared the crap out of me and I still get nightmares and panic attacks about it sometimes as an adult. This type of content disturbs me to no end now. I'm not saying you can't see things as problematic if you haven't experienced it, but I definitely think privileges allow people to ignore problems like this. Hell, I did for a long time.
@nicotinedealer76534 жыл бұрын
This comment is spot on, especially the bored part. I guess it's because we realise that when a guy doesn't understand consent, he hasn't matured mentally, and that's just a turn off. He's still in the same phase that we were in.

As a 16 year old I already developed this mindset to where I dont hate mafia/kidnapping fanfics ONLY IF they are accurate. Such as rape, sex trafficking, drugs, and other forms of abuse. And yes I understand consent, but after a while I got annoyed and tired with the same old inaccurate garbage of wattpad mafia fanfiction. And sadly because most teenagers do not understand the horrors of the mafia it is incredibly hard to find an accurate depiction of the mafia and I've only found one that got the closest it could to the level of violence and I re-read it almost once a month.

Kat already commented on how Laura just chose to say...odd things, and pretended to have power in a situation that she quite obviously didn't. Which, if her end goal was escaping, then it would make sense. But falling for her kidnapper (the same man who sexually violated her with non consensual touching) when he really did nothing to prove he "changed"? No, absolutely not. 0/10.

@fluidthought424 жыл бұрын
What people forget about what Beauty and the Beast narratives need is an element of trust being built, but all too often the male leads infringe on that trust and make no real effort to gain it back. Yes, Beast kidnaps Belle, but he makes an entire movie's worth of effort toward building a character arc where he gains her trust by submitting his heart entirely to her. He's not just the Beast, he's *her* Beast. But that hard work is skipped or ignored by lesser erotica writers who are uncritical towards their own work.

apart from the glaringly obvious offensive elements of this movie, I feel like this is one of those cases where it is insulting to men as well. I mean, poor Martin, he's busy and doesn't want to have sex, he doesn't buy her favorite drink, (he's bald?) how terrible. A busy, balding guy who sometimes doesn't want sex is very normal in the real world and I don't like how he is contrasted with this princessy, Stockholm syndrome-y "relationship" like they're saying that's what women really want, to be kidnapped, dominated, but also have nice things bought for them. I think there is a case for toxic femininity in this story as well (not a term I use lightly) apart from the glaring toxic masculinity
@faenen914 жыл бұрын
Not sure it's not just toxic masculinity with a red bow and bad wig though. Though the idea of needing specific words to highlight women reproducing patriarchy is gross it's also a thing so who knows?(though likely women would be blamed more cuz well patriarchy). Still we live in a world that people can make bank on narcisstic psychopath abuse smut so it's a mess in general. - btw I'm talking about the author and more so the marketing/Netflix for blowing this up. @veronicacrownover76584 жыл бұрын
You say your not phased by the subject matter but then seem to imply that you’re concerned about the magnified influence that comes with a feature film vs. a novel off Amazon. If you don’t have a problem with the subject matter then why would a broader audience be an issue? Let me be clear this movie is horrible and has little to no redeeming qualities. However, I’m always disappointed when critiques of these sorts of erotic stories veer into moral condemnation. Relationships with healthy boundaries and consent should be celebrated and upheld as the ideal but I don’t need all my media to necessarily reflect those standards. I don’t want modern parables. At least not all the time. And a desire to consume erotica that has morally grey or straight up depraved elements shouldn’t be treated any differently than media with heavy violence. I find it frustrating that stereotypically male media with lots of violent elements gets a pass while stereotypically female media doesn’t get the same benefit. All that said I wish erotica supposedly geared toward women had better writing and less tired tropes because 50 shades and 365 are just 🤢

@@veronicacrownover7658 Probably it’s an issue for the same reason I’m pissed that Goblin Slayer made it into the mainstream. As long as stuff like that stays in its dark little niche, it’s fine, but once it becomes mainstream, it has the potential to be genuinely harmful.

If it was about the sex, they could have done away with the extra stuff. This movie reflects too much of "Its not rape if you like it" grossness. It does this imo because it trys to reflect CNC in a way (which it obviously isnt) but that just creates this messed up narrative of rape culture where pleasure from sexual contact excuses genuine discomfort because of that sexual contact happening. It basically reinforces the harmful narrative that dubious consent is okay, and that not saying no means you consent to whatever is happening. While I understand escapism, and while I understand liking CNC in media because it's something you genuinely enjoy, this film does neither in a way where the consumer can reasonably watch this movie and take away an sort of healthy/neutral message from it. I would be perfectly fine if the message was neutral, but this has a very bad message, a message which we see exemplified through actual rape cases where the victim doesnt see justice due to the judges pre conceived ideas about consent. It especially reminds me of cases where the rape is excused or dismissed because the victim orgasmed. Anyway that's my opinion on this movie
@cordeliaistheone4 жыл бұрын

Misogyny is a thing in woman. And we should not assume someone has been abused because of this.

My assumption is that a lot of these women have no experience with anything beyond vanilla and this is a method of exploring things that they won't be able to experience, either because they're too afraid to or because they are in monogamous relationships with someone who isn't interested in doing it. However, because they are exploring these themes using their narrow interpretations of second and third hand inaccurate information, these themes are clumsily explored and result in messy and sometimes harmful portrayals. I'm basing this assumption on 15 year old virgins who write romantic fanfictions, many of whom have not been in a relationship yet.
@alexhendry21204 жыл бұрын
So I've seen studies that go into how a lot of women can only enjoy sex if it is forced onto them because of the shame women are made to feel for enjoying sex. Often a women can only be a whore or a virgin and that has a psychological impact. Obviously, this isn't the case for all women and I'm sure there are those who can engage in this dynamic in a healthy way.

As you were recounting the plot, I was thinking, "Wow, this is a really long summary," and I kept checking the time and seeing we're half an hour in and waiting for the actual film to start. Then you said, "And then it ends," and I honestly gasped. The biggest twist is how it ends without anything happening, anything being explored, or anyone growing. Laura went blond though. Is that character growth?

I love complicated, tortuous, borderline abusive fictionnal relationship (no interest for it in real life obv) and to me this sound like such a bad setup for it. For example they could have found a mafia-related reason to kidnap her: she's a witness/she knows something/she has a special skill they need etc... And then instead of having a pathetic, rapey, obsessed guy there could've been an interesting dynamic between him guarding and exploiting her and her trying to figure out a way out of it and maybe things get muddy from there and... Now that would be writing a completely different movie. This was an interesting idea for a thriller, not a romance. I don't think this movie could've been anything but trash. At least you made it entertaining to learn about this. great. piece. of art.

These kinds of unhealthy relationships are SO attractive to people with low self esteem. Someone obsessed with you? That means they like you! It’s so dangerous. This is the shit I read in high school when I had no idea of my self worth.

honestly this kind of weird rapey power dynamic stuff wouldn’t bother me half as much if they acknowledged that they’re portraying an unhealthy relationship. the key to kink in real life is communication but this type of movies always just leave that out entirely and frame it like a nonissue. this movie had the potential to be somewhat interesting if they actually explored the unhealthy aspects of the relationship and a lot of people would probably still find it hot. Idk if anything i’m saying makes sense i just hate the idea of someone who doesn’t know much about kink coming across a movie like this and pursuing bdsm thinking this is how consent works.

My experience of European movies is they don't tell you when something is bad because they think it's obvious tbh. We're supposed to listen to our feelings when engaging with media, not just suck it in. Its not like children are watching this (I...hope 😬)

@@Anon8848 The problem is that the film wants to excuse any creepiness and unsettling element with a "but he's hot tho and she's horny". It's basic uncriticality towards the themes in the work, signs not of mature writing but immature sensibilities.
@Anon88484 жыл бұрын
@@fluidthought42 I mean I dont think it's mature writing, but I also don't think it glorifies any of these things? Works aren't really supposed to critique themselves, they're just supposed to make you react to them. My reaction was something like "?????," disgust, and thinking it was clever for half a second when I thought she died and their bad choices were being paired with a "tragic" ending (aka comuppance--we don't get many stories like that anymore because people seem to stan antiheroes for some reason 🙄). I don't know of a single person who's just uncritically gone "damn, that's hot!" and moved on. I didn't even think Twilight was hot when I read it at 12, it was just uncomfortable Like clearly it's not some kind of epitome of media or something that even tries to have a message, but like....come on, we're smarter than this

To be honest, I don't see enough blonde women in films where they aren't used to be presented as hypersexualised or "strong-sexy". Or villains. At least in recent years, whenever a female lead is meant to be headstrong and likeable, she's dark-haired. I might be biased as a blonde haired person but I've been noticing it a lot lately.

IT'S FINALLY HERE! as an Italian (like, born and raised in Italy) I'm ready to roll my eyes at the whole mafia business tbh... we're off to a great start with the totally realistic 'no human trafficking' moral code! also I have no idea who that actor dude is. Also I remember really enjoying Secretary when I saw it more than a decade ago... Would love to see your review of it! Editing again to mention: wanna watch a really graphic bj scene outside pg? The Brown Bunny can surely deliver~ Last edit I promise: ok, to flesh out the scenario and make it feel more grounded, I would suggest changing the Massimo dude for a Berlusconi type, then adding a couple scenes of him dating underage "exotic girls" as he calls Laura to promise he loves her and wants to marry her. Now you can enjoy a more authentic taste of Italian mafia romance ♡

I'd encourage folks to look up the history of "Stockholm syndrome" as well. The guy who coined the term was using it to silence a woman who had been held hostage and later complained and said he was worse than her captors because he sucked at his job when he was called to negotiate her release. He said she had a mental disorder as the excuse as to why no one should listen to her, which added to the fact that one of the reasons why she was pissed at him was because she asked to speak to him multiple times when she was held hostage and he refused.
@kitvaneceon75684 жыл бұрын

Also explains why self-hatred patterns follow the exercise of both over the self... huh I just realized this one as I was typing...
