The city itself yes but everywhere else (which barely get attention) became way more interesting bc half the empire was basically self sufficient. It didnt matter who was in charge by the 3rd cenrury. Under some emperors these regional leaders had more power and flex than ever. A lot of interesting historians and traders thrived outside and inside Rome alike. I think you're just focused on propoganda.

The better explanation of Rex Sacrorum is that he was responsible for religious duties of the late kings. Office was established after kings were driven out of the City to make sure that the gods are properly appeased. And its link to the kings was the reason behind the ban on political and military powers. There is even a a term "odium regni" that describes this one of the leading driving forces behind Republic's politics. It means "fear of the kings". It was responsible for this ban but also many ambitious men's deaths that shaped Republic's history including the last one - death of Caesar.

One of the greatest bits about Sulla is that he did a similar move to what Caesar did with becoming PM. He won a grass crown early in his career that gave him an automatic seat in the senate for life. And whenever he entered the senate all the much older, richer senators had to rise and applaud him until he sat down. Like Caesar this earned him renown, but also enmity of the old guard.

Something worth noting, which I just remembered now, is that Julius Caesar was a Flamen at one point, but was removed by Sulla when he defeated Marius. This allowed Caesar to go in to military and political life.

I think It’s worth mentioning that the title of Pontifex Maximus was later adopted by the Roman Catholic Church into the current-day title of Pope (although it does not currently appear on the official list of papal titles). So, while not really true, you could say the Julius Caesar was _technically_ the Pope of his time. Just a little tidbit I enjoy :)

That little bit about Caesar seeing the Spears vibrate before his death really struck me. I’m a bit more superstitious than most, so I kinda would like to believe it actually happened. If it did, I wonder what Caesar thought of it? He received so many warnings about his impending doom, if only he listened to them. Would’ve been cool to see what he would’ve done afterwards.

Could you, if you've got time, do a follow up video on how Cesar (and others in similar positions) actually got around to physically doing all their different duties? How can he be in Rome for Pontifex meetings and campaign all over the place? How did they do all the stuff they had to do? Wouldnt some meetings start to overlap or something? What if say, someone has to be in the forum to vote on or stop an important decision but also has to be at an important pontifex meeting? If he's appointed for life, and fighting in a civil war, what does that mean for Rome? Does he stil get to have a say in the morals and religious lawmakings or is that on hold till the civil war is over?
