When you said that line about "making new memories with new music" it kinda hit me. Few years ago i stopped searching actively for new music, and about that time period i was depressed: i didnt wanted to experience nothing new, everything was "pale" and "lifeless" compared to my memories of "good times at school/early university" years, i've been spending my days at my room, sleeping, barely eating, and dreaming about how my life could've been better. I vividly remember how before that period, i was actively searching for music in magazines/stores, discussing it with friends and classmates (even if discussion was just "that shit good"), every track rom that time has that specifit little memory ingrained. "Homecoming" from Kanye West reminds me of last time i was sitting at Dads car while we were driving to store. "Crazy in Love" reminds me of time when i had no shame dancing in my own room imagining im pop-star diva. "Feel Good inc." reminds me of all of my classmates who were trying to impress girls with their "cool musical taste". So many memories are attached to music from that time, but when i became depressed, i stopped making new memories, and i actually can barely remember any music i discovered for myself at that time. I actually started feeling better recently but just couldnt get what wrong with my presception of everything. Lately i can barely consume any kind of content, not just music, and i think the lack of good memories is the main reason. Im not sure why im actually writing this as i hope noones gonna read that embarassing wall of text, I just wanted to thank you for making those amazing videos. At least i can say for myself, this video made one life a bit better :D P.S.: apologizing if i made grammar mistakes, English is not my first language.

Thanks for writing this I feel like I am in a similar situation. I wanna say covid is the reason but honestly I wasn't making many new memories and discovering music before it either soooo ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Being on the internet too much is partly the reason I stopped I guess. Seeing people talk about music online is such a toxic shitshow. Why is everyone so mad and defensiveeeee

Hey, I know I'm a year late to this, but I just wanna say: it's not too late! I know it sucks looking back on a "better time" but if you live your life comparing every moment to the one before it you won't enjoy any of them! I know this is a lot harder than it sounds (especially with the pandemic and all lol) but try and go out and do things that you enjoy and that positively contribute to you or others and memories and stuff will come naturally without you thinking about it. The important thing is not to give up and I really hope you don't. God bless, hope you find a better place!

I so glad you said this cause i’ve felt the same way. I sort of find myself in these cycles where i just feel stuck and every time i break out of it it’s always associated with new music. Idk if it’s the music causing this change in attitude that makes me feel better or if i just happen to be willing to listen to new music during those times but i find it so fascinating that there’s even a connection

"Rather be" by Clean Bandit. One sunny morning sometime in the spring of 2014, I had woken up taken a bath, made my lunch, done all the things I needed to get done for school. As I was sitting in the living room eating my breakfast and watching MTV's morning music program, there it was. The song. I heard about 3 seconds of it before my eyes were glued to the TV to see where that sound came from, where that sound was going. When the music video was over, I shortly after had to go, cause I was already running a little late. I took my helmet, rode my bike to school, while meeting my friend halfway there so we could ride together to school like we always did. Some weeks or even days after, the song became really popular and I remember that one time where one of the girls in our class was playing the song and singing along. All sudden more and more started singing along to it, and I looked around and every single girl in our class was singing along. We didn't always agree on things, and often there would be drama between some of us, like there is in any 7th grade class. But singing together, was something we were quite good at. "Rather be" reminds me of that.

I definitely understand what you mean when you say that music can make you nostalgic for times we here you weren’t even born. I was born in 2006 and whenever I hear early 2000’s pop or rock music I instantly get hit with a blast of nostalgia even though I either wasn’t born or was just really young when those songs came out, but that might also be because of my older siblings who were all teenagers in the 2000’s and introduced me to that type of music when I was really young

I remember back in 2016, my cousin showed me Ps & Qs by Lil Uzi Vert. I thought the song was terrible, I absolutely hated the instrumental. But then, I had gone over to my cousin's house in 2020. It had been a really long time since I'd seen him, and he started playing Ps & Qs again. And then it was like it was a completely different song. Listening to the song was like euphoria; everything about 2016 just seemed so good compared to 2020.

Lady gaga's album, Chromatica, is so so weird. It came out in the MIDDLE of the pandemic, when everyone was forced to stay inside and there was a curfew...I remember listening to it while in bed, waiting for it to come out. I just listened to the entire album and closed my eyes and thought about how if this came out before corona (or if corona never happened) we'd probably listen to it in some nice club. No matter how hard i try when i listen to that album, it really takes me back to that "lonely" time of pandemic lockdown wishing to live life again. Crazy

Not because of the lyrics or the dance all vibe it gives but because the first time heard the song was a really calm place for me in my life. I didn't even know it then. It does such a wonderful job at creating a fun nostalgic atmosphere through its animation and characters but my god the jam sessions they charceters have are beautiful and remind you of the fun times you had when you were younger I've never watched a show that has envoked that feeling through utilising music so well. In my senior year of high school, I used to listen to a lot of 70s-80s Japanese Fusion albums. When I listen to those albums now, I can literally feel those days. Music truly does have some kind of grip on our memories that I can't explain. It's like smelling a perfume or deodorant that reminds you or someone else used to wear and you can imagine what they looked like back then or how it felt to be alive back then. You get transported and unlock memories which you barely think about anymore or even thought were gone. It's incredible.

That line “music is only as good as the memories attached to it” is so incredibly facts. 2016-2017 music was a huge part of my middle high school life, yet that time in my life i don’t really remember being myself or the person i am today, i was transitioning and going through the motions. Which is honestly why i don’t look back at music from that era which are objectively good, in the same great light anymore. it’s tainted in a way, because the memories don’t feel great, the music doesn’t feel great. but 2018-2020, everything in my playlist i still love and look back to.
