The field of psychology is very new, so for the longest time, spiritual leaders were seen as the resident mental health expert. Confession is basically a mini therapy session with some God sprinkled in. It's why hospitals and the military still have chaplains. In fact, chaplains are different from priests in that their job is to help everyone regardless of spiritual beliefs (or none). Chaplains usually learn about the spiritual practices of many faiths so that they can be sensitive and helpful, because their job is not to preach, but to offer a nonjudgmental space for spiritual healing. Long tangent, but I think that many priests, rabbis, imams, etc. view their role in a similar way. Rather than proclaim that they have found the correct interpretation and command that you follow, they have simply found the spiritual path that speaks to or works for them, and they felt a calling to help others through this spiritual lens. While they have their own bias, it is more important that people come away from their meetings with better mental and spiritual health than they went in, regardless of the specifics. The priest who isn't sure that there is a God might be having a crisis of faith, or they might realized that their faith is not about being radically convinced of their particular religious sect (which is statistically improbable), but simply they way they have chosen to walk a spiritual life. TLDR; To some, faith is less about God and their particulars, and more about a foray into the metaphysical and learning how to heal others beyond the nuts and bolts of biology. This priest knew that Josh wasn't Catholic and maybe didn't believe in God at all, so he brought his spiritual understanding of life to Josh's level. To simply chastise Josh about making God unhappy would be unhelpful and a waste of time.

@maryrosekent822317 күн бұрын
What was their response?
@hebercluff1665Күн бұрын
@@maryrosekent8223 If they had done their homework, they should've said something like "Faith isn't perfect knowledge. It's placing your hope on God". Something like that. Basically, "faith" to Mormons isn't about knowing God is there. It's about trusting his teachings enough to follow through with it, because you believe that living like this will ultimately be for your good. The way I personally think of it, if you met Jesus on the street and was the type of person who would be friends with him, then you're a faithful person. Living a "sinful" life warps your character in a way that makes you and God incompatible. A lot of our missionaries go out completely unprepared to talk to strangers about this stuff. I fumbled or couldn't answer questions I should've known because I was too nervous. Plus, a lot of the time, people we talk to ask questions we hadn't considered before, so we have to go home and look into it. Mormons usually see going on a mission half as a character building exercise and an act of faith. We don't really think people should be converted to our faith because the missionaries were very eloquent or well spoken. We tend to hold the belief that God will personally take care of it, and that we're there to just be there when we're needed. The only people I ever baptized were people who already wanted to join a church or were already looking for God in their own way. If you're living the right way, you'll be in the right place and the right time.

@@tatianapavel9858It's amazing how cultural bias affects our perspective. When I read your initial post, I'm thinking "how cool is that, a church with a planetarium. I'd go there!" as if it was an ingenious combination of the two. Because, as Josh rightly points out, here in the US there's nothing off limits when it comes to churches and making money. However, when I read your response, oof, did that hit hard. I'm old enough to remember The Wall coming down and the things that came before. Now, there are generations, aka my kids, that don't have an understanding of how things were in your country and others. Even myself, since I didn't live there, have a much different perspective than someone who lived through those times. I'm glad you shared this unique experience. It really gave me a profound reminder of history and our shared humanity. Note: as you can gather from the comment you replied to, planetariums here often hosted other creative ventures, such as light shows and movies projected on the domed ceiling. @@jedidahkagendo7219 Thank you! Yes, he’s hilarious and I hope he’s on SNL soon. His timing and stories are just something we’re not always seeing anymore. My 14 year old was walking by and heard him and he loves him too! Hey any day my 14 year old son and I laugh together is a great day! Thanks to Josh. You take care and watch out for speed bumps when you’re walking!😂😂

Josh, this is the penultimate juxtaposition in a set! How you can touch the deepest soul of human experience to the most absurd oddities in one smooth story set is astounding. What a gift and heart, too! My friend, when you come to the Bay Area, I'd be more than happy to drive you around, anywhere, gas money be damned! 💜

8:57 As someone from Kentucky, as soon as you said “I was at a gas station in Kentucky…” I immediately went “oh god”. We’ve got horses and bourbon and that’s literally it, everything else sucks.

Makes me think of some of my teachers. I grew up in a small town and had some of the same teachers in junior and high school in the late 80s early 90s. But most are still around which means they were way younger than 14 year old me thought.

Oh my goodness, my face hurts from laughing so hard. I would be so disconcerted seeing loose pickles like that - that must be so stressful for that shop owner lol.

Wow! This ten minute gas station bit that turns into the pickle jar story which gets funnier and funnier and then ends on a perfect note - fantastic! I often write lol, but this time I really did laugh out loud.
