Leave it to a cinematographer to create a professional Squarespace ad for his KZbin video haha. Best Squarespace ad I've seen. Such a cool breakdown on the insurance commercial too. I think a lot of people are curious what sets look like and all the ins/outs on a shoot day!

Might be worth looking into the Dedolights with Parallel Beam Intensifiers. The intensifiers multiply the intensity of the lights three to five times unlike the spotlight mounts for Aputure, which lessen the intensity. Since you already use CRLS, the only thing you would’ve needed for that setup with the 600d is a more powerful beam. Dedos might be your solution.
@lewispotts

Thanks for the tip! Will have a look into it

Sam has a great suggestion. If you're into purchasing something of your own, their DLH400 units with a parallel beam intensifier are a great option. It is essentially a very small hmi, whose beam intensity can be increased by about 5 times 😳. If however, you're into replacing your 18K's, then you probably need a PaniBeam unit (very large, heavy and expensive)

How would one of those compare to a source-4 ellipsoidal with a joker 400 in the back? Not used the jokers before but that combination ("jo-leko") seems to be quite common on film sets in the US at least.

I was already psyched on the content of this video, then you put the cherry on top with the quick lighting breakdown of the Squarespace ad. So cool, thank you! Sidenote: seems like another solution to lighting the "indoor" part of the commercial would have been diffusion ABOVE the actress and fake wall rather than the blackout curtain? Since you already had the giant LED panel there sort of doing the same thing (but less powerful).

Also, when creatively problem solving, you need collaboration because someone may have more experience in a certain area than you and could give you helpful advice, and another reason is because other people even with the same experience as yourself may be slightly more knowledgeable about a certain problem and could help as well

That was insanely informative and cool to watch. I honestly love all your stuff mate. So absolutely beast of you to share with all of us. I was wondering If you could have solved all those issues inside the black cloth set up by simple cutting off a big portion of the top, replacing it with a full grid frame maybe. Perhaps do the same on the side and harvest the sun as much as possible. It would really have to be really carefully thought beforehand though, and of course ask production so you don't get yelled at for ruining a whole bunch of black cloth! 😂

Best add I’ve ever seen. If people took their time to shoot ads like this one, I’d watch them. Quick question, I’m new to filmmaking. What was your take when you shot yourself with a lot of overhead space. You’re obviously an excellent filmmaker. What were you going for? I’ve heard that when cinematographers use a lot of overhead space when filming a person, is to make them seem little/down ect. Would love to hear your take on it. Trying to learn everything I can

I have one big question, since the edge wall of garage scene didn't show up in frame, why you didn't make it full with white diffuser so there would be no hard work of exposing in darker garage scene? We just apply the door sliding men and the woman in front of the sliding door with big soft diffuser either with sun or some light. I wonder the why or thought process.
