Many celebrities see "Feminist" as a noun rather than a verb. It's all about identity and appearance rather than action. And frustratingly that trickles down into ordinary people too. My other issue with Belle’s yellow dress that my friend Molly and I noticed in the theater is you can clearly see the zipper in the back ballooning outward. But seriously, what's the PROBLEM with waist training? I'm not suggesting extremes here, but having a slim waist is kind of necessary to be healthy - I don't mean it's unhealthy to be overall stocky or plump naturally, but if your waist is out of proportion and as big as your hips or bust, that's kind of a giveaway of being overweight, which is unhealthy. If a corset helps to ensure you don't let yourself get overweight, that's a good thing! And that's even without the much more important virtue of support.

I've worn corsets, and trust me when I say that there's nothing about them that restricts you from eating normally, or even excessively. I was trying to indicate that because of different body types, just as you said, wearing a corset or having a slim waist naturally or any other health/beauty choices or even natural build can't be seen as signs of oppression. For all we know, a girl with a slim waist who also wears a corset would have a slim waist naturally, and someone without a slim waist may still choose to wear a corset, not to force slimness, but for other valid reasons. I was just pointing out that if a girl DOES have a slim waist or chooses to dress in a way that creates the appearance of a slim waist because she WANTS to, she shouldn't be criticized for upholding 'impossible beauty standards.' Everyone has a right to make their own choices regarding their appearance, regardless of societal expectations. It can be a very big boost to one's self esteem to stand out, and an equal but different boost to meet expectations: it's all about how YOU perceive yourself and the reasons you make your choices.

As a medieval-style seamstress, I had to roll my eyes at the feminist corset statement. Corsets are one of the most comfortable pieces of clothing I've ever worn. Like as a big-chested girl, corsets help alleviate so much pain because they support the entire torso and not just the chest. I read that interview, and I remember how I was annoyed with it. Agree that it was a blessing that Emma turned down Cinderella 2015. Cinderella 2015 was the best Disney movie adaptation to me, hands down. Emma doesn't understand Cinderella, thus she doesn't deserve that role. Cinderella might not be a warrior princess, and ppl might see her passiveness as being weak, but she showed emotions and strengths in both the animation and live action versions. There is an essay concerning how ppl blaming Cinderella for not fighting back and not running away as blaming the victim. In those days, for Cinderella, having a roof over your head would be more important than winning the argument against her stepmother. At least in that house she was physically safe (I disagree of course with the abuse, I just want to point out that Cinderella has a reason to not physically fight back). And in the end, Cinderella's kindness and forgiveness are one of her most endearing traits. If those traits are not the traits of a role model, then what a sad thing the world we live in then... A side note: I see more and more people thinking that Cinderella 2015 is a better movie overall compared to BB2017, and I am glad they start to think so. It's not because I don't like Beauty and the Beast; I love the animation. I just can't relate with the BB live action version.

Emma really missed what Cinderella was about anyway. To still keep a kind heart when you are abused is not easy, and is severely looked down upon by people like Emma who grew up so privileged. The whole "just save yourself" attitude is toxic when you think it can be applied to everybody. and even Belle wasn't a "I'll just save myself" kind of girl, but that's the kind of character Emma wanted to push.

The thing about abusive family is that you *have* to be passive as to not get into trouble. You can't stand up for yourself and not expect there to be dire, dire consequences. In both movies the stepmother and sisters showed that they were capable of putting their hands on cinderella. Could you imagine if Cinderella yelled at them or slapped one of them!? She'd be locked up in the barn bruised and battered. Also, abuse does not make kind people. The fact that Cinderella, was verbally, physically and emotionally abused throughout most of her life up until age 19, and came out of it still kind and sweet shows more emotional and mental strength than any disney princess (or character) made during Walts' lifetime. I was abused by my step family. I'm now 19 and out of it. It did not make me a kind person admittedly and gave me a lot of my own anger problems. Emma Watson stepped out if her boundaries as an actress and made so many decisions that wasn't her job to make. That's not a good thing. Films are a team effort and everyone was hired to do their jobs because they have the skills for them. Emma didn't study costume design, screen writing, or cinematography, so she isn't qualified to make such decisions but she did for this film because she wanted to, most likely threatening the production team that she'll leave if they don't do as she says.

I think it's not just the dress that sticks out in a bad way, it's her whole appearance. Her hair and makeup are too modern; like I think even her eyebrows are noticeably modern in their shaping if that makes any sense. Her hairstyle just says 'Hermione but straighter' (the texture that is). When I think of women in good period pieces set pre-20th century, they almost always have some degree of curl or wave to their hair because curls/waves are genetically more common, I read somewhere. As much as I love Emma Watson, she just wasn't the best choice for Belle, who was subtle, patient, calm and easy-going and that's what makes her so admirale and lovable. The way Emma plays Belle is the polar opposite, and it kind of feels like I'm watching a calmer Hermione. Personality heavily affects the tone of the story. We have existing historical garments with waist sizes up to 40 inches and more. Corsets were primarily worn as supportive or "foundation" garments. The illusion of a very small waist was mostly created by hoops, petticoats, and copious amounts of padding in the right places. By making the bust and hips appear wider, the waist seems smaller in comparison.

If you are going to complain about corsets making girls feel like they need to be skinny then you should tell that to all the celebrities that those girls look at and look up to. Corsets weren’t even designed to make you look skinny. They were mainly used to hold up a dress and give support/posture. Even men wore corsets at one point in time. Plus, corsets are also used for medical purposes especially if you have a back injury. The only people who cared about how they looked were the wealthy bunch. We had a lesson on history of clothing in school, and corsets were very suffocating and uncomfortable. But women had to wear them because they were the equivalent of bras and they were supposed to look as skinny as possible. Nevertheless, considering that it is historically accurate, she maybe should have worn one. She's already skinny so its not that big of a deal. But I understand why she disagreed.

@@snowflakes7344 not entirely true. One thing I’d like to mention is that the entire outfit that has a corset is about illusion. Big skirts make the waist appear smaller. Most women then did not tightlace as most women were working women. Tightlacing would cause issues but again it was rare & frowned upon. The eyelets (the holes in which the lacing goes through) we’re hand sewn & actually could not withstand the pressure of tightlacing anyway. Another thing is old timey photoshop. They retouched a bunch of photos of women (& men. Just about everyone) with way too small waists & perfect skin & weirdly no collarbones. I could go on but I’ll end it here.

@@alloriavarner8304 About what you're saying, I believe it was Karolina Zebrowska who made a video where she "reviewed" a bunch of old photographs (like over century old) and how they've been retouched. To maybe add to what you've written. The reason many actors who wore videos on set complain about it, besides the fact that media love drama etc, is that they usually aren't made to measure by professionals, seasoned etc. They don't use any shift or chemise underneath it. They probably don't lace it down gradually and do tight lace it. So no wonder they dislike the experience. Corsets are expensive to make, goddamit, why would you want to have it drink all the sweat and other body oils from your skin? Yes, corsets were THE breast and back support and there're modern women, including those with rather bigger "assets", who say that wearing corsets helped relieve back plains, because the weight doesn't rest solely on your shoulders and a little strap around your rib cage but gets distributed around the whole corset surface. Tight lacing was a thing but it was a thing for rich and vain girls, just like not everyone does plastic surgeries for "looking prettier" reasons (plastic surgery is still a surgery and a health risk). You would lace it just enough so it sits next to the body, but why on Earth would you tight lace it to a point where you can't move and basically faint while working in a field or a factory? Also love to hate how corset portrayal in movies is basically that of male caricaturists of past centuries, ridiculing those rich vain tight lacing women, except we take it seriously because that's the only thing we know. Istg, don't let me anywhere near movie making or there will be serious money and time invested into making corsets for the cast, to their body measurements, they will be historically accurate, require chemises underneath and will actually be pleasant to wear, once you've gotten used to it (personally my biggest beef with corsets is that they take more time to put them on than a bra, been there, done that).

I hate the “corsets don’t let you breathe,” trope. A correctly fitting corset doesn’t need to hurt! I’m petite and can only have a seven inch long corset (in the front, the sides two inches shorter) because I have a cartoonishly short torso. Of COURSE it hurt until I figured that out! But the correct size and fit doesn’t have to hurt or stifle breathing at all. Most people didn’t tight lace, so it wasn’t uncomfortable. We’re pushing our modern priorities onto another era, as if their objective would of course to be as thin as possible, which wasn’t the case in various times and places. I used to have to wear a back brace. But it was two inches thick and made me embarrassed if I had to wear it in public. It was also incredibly hot, and as I’m in the South, that was a problem. But a mesh corset can be stealthed and is breathable. I’m in less pain with a corset on than otherwise, as it gives some added support that my bra needs, relieving my back pain. They’re so useful even now, but people associate them with discomfort or pain and automatically rule them out. Instead of a $300-$500 bulky back brace, I can spend $75 on a steel boned corset and have this pain relieving device stealthed under my clothes, so no one knows I’m even having to dodge pain. I get why Emma wouldn’t be a fan of what the caricature of the corset stands for, but that isn’t its true history, so it made the movie worse for... absolutely no reason. Stand up for your principles, sure. Just make sure they make sense. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Miss Roma If you want to see if you like them for not a ton of money, Orchard Corset is a good starter brand. They also have new styles and designs here and there. I have about four corsets from them. If you’re in a hot environment, I’d recommend starting with the mesh one. They tend to ship quickly and have good service. Just be aware that if you are petite you might need a short corset, or a “waspie.” The ONLY time I’ve had a painful corset was when it was too long, and when I sat the end would dig into my legs and pelvis. Looked stunning, lol, but I couldn’t sit in it. Basically, if it hurts, that is only because it’s not the right size or length maybe. They have KZbin videos helping you understand the lingo and how to get a proper corset and how to maintain them, and how to break them in. Basically, wear them for short amounts of time at first. Over time they kind of mold to you. It’s really cool. Also, make sure that when you’ve tightened the corset, that the edges in the back are parallel. Sometimes in movies you see where a corset laces and that area looks like a triangle or an hourglass. Those corsets don’t fit right, and are more likely to be uncomfortable, and over time that corset would be damaged more quickly because more pressure is put on some areas than others. You know a corset fits right when you got up to a few inches of space between the edges of the corset and when those edges are straight up and down like railroad tracks. Let me know if you have any other questions. Corsets aren’t the end all be all and in some situations they can’t be stealthed, or for some kinds of pain back braces are better. But generally, corsets are pretty great and get a bad wrap. It’s just a matter of understanding how they work. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I hope you find something you really like. 😊

​@Maria Giulia Rodriguez you have your timeline so confused. the late 1800s (not the mid 1700s which is when this film would've taken place) is when tight-lacing increased in popularity and became common practice. THAT'S when people actually tried to change their natural shape with a corset (like a modern day waist trainer) and it's what most people think ALL corsets are. unlike modern times where people tend to overexert themselves by attempting to tight-lace themselves into a corset quickly, women of the 1700s wore a corset/stays (NOT a tight one) from very early ages. it made wearing them natural (like a bra) and it was VERY rare for it to actually adjust organ placement. corsets in the 1700s were made with materials of the time and thus were much softer than modern corsets. in regard to the working class they didn't own multiple corsets, they'd have one that they would wear until it couldn't be used anymore, this made their personal corset soft and worn. corsets in the 1700s were literally used as back support (those dresses were HEAVY) and it wasnt until the victorian/edwardian period that the 18-inch waist was what people strived for. you can't lump one time period with another, especially when we're talking about historical accuracy. there is so much research about this i highly recommend checking it out.

I hate the fact that they made Emma portray herself and not Belle. I love Emma,and I don't have anything against her but seriously Belle is my favourite princess and I looked up to her since I was a little girl to the point that I believe that she is the best princess among others (although that did change when I grew older but still, she's my favourite). Funnily enough, corsets were actually comfortable and supportive and served the purpose of supporting the bust and straightening the back beyond creating a specific silhouette (tightlacing corsets every day wasn't common). Also, if Emma Watson were as educated on women's rights and feminism as she likes to portray herself, she would know that men were actually the ones to spread misinformation about corsets in the first place... I was actually rather disappointed with Belle’s gown in the live action version of Beauty and the Beast. I understand cartoon dresses can defy the laws of science and whatnot; however, compared to Belle’s dress, the skirt of Emma’s dress appeared forlorn and seemed to hang limply with nothing to support its shape. Additionally, the fact that a corset or stays were not worn beneath the gown’s bodice marred the effect, and did not allow for as much of a whimsical, magical Disney appearance. I had expected something elegant and extravagant, something that would appear expensive and almost unrealistic, as that, I feel, is what I have been trained to expect based upon the other creations that through the art of sketching have been presented to me in the animated versions of these Disney films. Moreover, I would have liked to see more extravagant fabrics used in her dress and heavier embroidery to give it that air of wealth. Overall, the dress was not good, but it was not terrible. In my humble opinion, that is.

Emma Watson really very much wanted to be in this film. And it seemed that Disney also very much wanted her to be in it. They just worked with and around her. Her singing isn't great, so they improved on it. And if she wanted to make a feminist statement, they just let her run with it, because if makes for even more positive selling points. It sort of fits with the character she is portraying, even though the original didn't feel the need to oversell on that. I think that if actors have reasonable doubts or requests during a film, they should be discussed and agreed to where and when possible without it taking away from the final product. I think in this case her "demands" went too far, even if meant with good intentions. It's too bad.

@afootineachworld What would you mean with inappropriate? It's pretty clearly presented what the "depiction" of the character is before applying for the part. You can make some demands in your contract like not showing certain parts of your body uncovered, but otherwise refusing to wear something (albeit health related issues aside) will probably end up in getting you fired. Taking a princess role but refusing to wear a corset because you're trying to make a statement (which doesn't even make any sense) is imo a dick move and it would never have been accepted where I work.

Some years ago, I directed a production of "Beauty and the Beast" at my school, and our Belle wore a sumptuous gold lace 18th-century frock that I bought from a professional theatre company costume sale. So true. I've never played Belle - one of my life's dreams - but I played Princess Ida in my Gibert and Sullivan Society's production and we didn't have much money for costumes. The girls at Ida's school were dressed as pastel nuns! Well, I told my director that I had to wear a princess dress at some point or we would break the hearts of every little girl who came to the show because it had 'princess' in the title! So one of the ladies who did costume did over one of my mom's evening dresses to look more medieval, and I wore it for the lunchtime scene as sort of 'non-uniform' downtime. Well, judging from the response after the show, I made several young girls very happy! You've got to have the princess dress: it's a law. 😁

I would hope so, considering that Belle's entire wardrobe fell flat due to her imposing HER vision on the costume designs instead of leaving it to the professional costume designer. Poor woman had to find so many tactful ways of saying "please, don't blame me for this or hold it against me when considering future jobs." Edit: Not to mention, she fell into the trap so many movies do when trying to make their historical heroine seem modern and relatable. That is, thinking of the dress as a costume instead of clothing. PoTC had the same problem. It's when the heroine will walk around in her underwear, no problem. Elizabeth flinging off the jacket her father gave her to cover her shift on the pier, or Belle stripping off her dress entirely to rush to the castle to join the fight. The historical version of standing in front of everyone in your bra and panties. And Belle running around town with her dress tucked into her drawers. Not only were those not a thing at the time, when they did turn up they were viewed as being for loose women. So, Emma had Belle going all over town doing the equivalent of the drunk girl at the club who left the bathroom with her dress tucked into her panties.

I've seen more accurate and prettier versions of Belle's dress at Comic-con. Emma wasn't Belle at all for me, the rest of the movie and the characters were fabulous... Just not Belle. The actor felt wrong, the dress was wrong, the dance was lacking and the emotion felt hollow. It was such a shame.

I remember watching the film and feeling underwhelmed when I saw Belle’s dress. I don’t know a lot about fashion history, but since Belle is the protagonist and that it’s a Disney film, I expected a more elegant and magical dress. Also, I don’t want to offend anyone, but when Emma said she doesn’t want to wear a corset because of feminism, I just rolled my eyes. I understand it’s her choice but not everything is about feminism and corsets were prevalent during that time.

Even if Wardrobe took Belle’s preferences into consideration, she wouldn’t have made it *_SO SUPER_* plain and rather ugly (considering it’s supposed to be a 18/19th-century ballgown.) Even simple dresses back in those days weren’t so plain. Even 21st century prom dresses are prettier than Live!Belle’s dress. And Wardrobe would’ve added flair to an otherwise plain dress, but there’s nothing.

also, a corset would've 100% made her performance SO MUCH BETTER. playing a princess has so much to do with your posture and the lightness of your movements to give it that truly magical factor, and a corset can really really help an actress get used to that. even if the purpose was to portray belle as a more "active" princess they still needed that.

Izzy Izzy brah I know this is late, but the morals of Beauty and the Beast are self sacrificing for those you love and putting people you love needs before your own(Belle chooses to take her father’s place, the beast tells Belle to go to her father(it was his idea) even though he knows he’s going to die and even tells her to take the mirror with her even though he could have kept it to look at her) redemption, forgiveness, personal growth, learning to not judge someone for being different(Belle for being an introverted bookworm and the beast for looking like the beast) the whole thing about Gaston and the townspeople is that they look at things skin deep and judge things for being different from them, they love Gaston because he’s a good hunter and he’s handsome and muscular, but he’s arrogant and rude and a slob. The townspeople are small minded and are just okay with their day to day toiling and their status quo. Gaston is what the Beast would be without the enchantment or without meeting Belle, or without having the servants. Lafou is Gaston‘s yes man, who’s in his shadow because of the status it gets him, in some parts of the movie he’s just as viscous. Gaston wants to marry Belle because she’s beautiful, but then wants to take all her uniqueness away and just turn her into his housewife and incubator. Where are the Beast recognizes her kindness, maturity, intelligence, charm and he wants to do something for HER, something that she likes, something personal, he encourages and accepts what other people call her weird for, he embraces it. (Which is something she said she wanted the song “Belle” “and for once It might be grand, to have someone understand”)I’ve never felt this way for someone before. I want to do something for her”. If he was just her captor she wouldn’t have came back and nurses him back to health, she would have left him in he woods and he wouldn’t have saved her from the wolves and also if this was her being timid she wouldn’t have yelled at him while she was tending to his wounds, Belle isn’t dumb, or timid or naive. She’s emotionally and mentally mature, maybe curious and a little wanderlust, but she’s not a dreamy headed 16 year old like Ariel. I’m not saying this is or isn’t a feminist film, but I think it helps that the one person who said anything explicit sexist(“women shouldn’t read they’ll get ideas” wanting Belle to throw away any of her own ambitions or wants and just be his “little wife”(which she totally resents) and to rub his feet) is shown as the villain and the leader of a literal angry mob and then dies horribly at the end. Sorry for the Ted talk, but I absolutely love this movie and hate when people get shit mixed up about it.

The dress in a different movie wouldve been a “jawdropping” piece. But in beauty and the beast its just out of place and awkward. I remember reading that directors and costume designers wanted the dress to seem more “flowy” so it look pretty when she danced but it barely held much shape when she turned except for the one moment she grabs the dress and lifts it. The reason belles dress was so big and out of her character was just because of that. IT WAS MEANT TO BE OUT OF HER CHARACTER. Her transformation into this perfect looking queen type was to show her in a new style, Belle as royalty and how she fits in with it. Its obviously my own thoughts and theory but personally its what makes sense to the drastic change of style in the movie. The big change is what makes the dress so memorable. i actually think jacqueline durran was more than capable of creating a stunning dress, but i think there were other factors (disney's marketing and the lack of a corset) that inevitably wound up preventing her from making the dress she wanted. the woman has created many of keira knightley's most memorable costumes, she's wildly talented. sandy powell did an AMAZING job with cinderella, but she also had full control. unfortunately jacqueline durran didn't.

Belle suits a more structured dress (like in the 1991 film) as it is reflective of her maturity and intelligence, perhaps even more so than the other princesses whose charms lie in their whimsical and arguably naive nature. Perhaps it was taking away the ability to use away a corset as you mentioned... but in doing this the dress became no longer reflective of the time period or of Belle as a character. Loved this 💓

As someone who does not like the Rococo style, I was actually looking forward to see how they'd change Belle's dress. I was expecting something like Cinderella's dress; modern fabric and enhanced color that has the silhouette of the dresses of that period, but no we got that yellow dress. I like yellow but I was expecting more than that. Also, that gold floral prints added later? it was hardly recognizable and didn't add anymore wow factor. it was meh.

The costume aesthetic for Cinderella was 1950's combined with a few other eras. So the modernity in her dress made sense. In BatB, aside from Belle, the costuming is so incredibly exact to a few certain years that Emma's dresses are especially awful.

JLongbone did a funny review of this movie and summed it up best. "This girl is not Belle. She's Emma Watson in Belle cosplay." I thought the purpose of acting is to give a believable performance by putting yourself into someone else's situation and perspective, which she failed to do. Emma Watson must think really highly of herself if, in the words of JLongbone, "I don't need to be like Belle. Belle needs to be more like me." My friend is an actor and I think she said it best "we aspire to be the character as much as humanly possible, we study their movements, voice, opinions and morality but we could never be them that's why we're called actors, we're just acting like them." Acting is form of movable Art and Belle is a character already defined in the books so Emma could have read about her to get into character so I don't know why she put your values onto a character and called it acting. I wonder how much time the discussions or maybe even arguments Emma had, to not wear a corset, how much time did that take away from other things and how much extra work the seamstress, designer and assistants had to do to change on something that Belle would have worn due to the time period and how practical it was. Belle did farm work and looked after her elderly father, how painful to have breasts jiggling about doing manual work without a corset.

I really did not like the live action dress. It looks too modern, while everyone else is historically accurate. I mean it's nice on its own, but when we've seen everyone else in the more extravagant outfits, it just looks so underwhelming! It would be like showing up to a world class restaurant in t-shirts and jeans.
