I heard a theory or more like a crucial detail that while pokemon technically metamorphose or mature with training and experience, digimon being digital beings are not bound by natural world rules hence literally evolving like several eons in one go like from a cat with holy properties to a literal angel, or a dinosaur through added data growing metallic weapons of mass destruction. Digimon are literally eldritch beings beyond the natural world there's no competiton in terms of power output. More digimon have the capability of reaching legendary pokemon levels of power.

That and power scaling lore-wise is completely different in both franchises, a Pokémon from a lower stage of evolution can beat a higher stage Pokémon if it’s trained well enough, but a bunch lower stage evolution Digimon will struggle against a higher stage Digimon due to the difference in power alone.

Like another commenter said, that's the fun of Digimon. They start from tiny, baby slimes and then ascend to godhood, capable of busting entire planets and the like. Best of all is you get to influence what they become. Depending on how you raise them, you have entire evolution trees that make no sense whatsoever, and they often intersect. Digimon is not aber kicking the asses of other living beings just for fun, but to safe the Digi- and the Humanworld. Digimon has a way deeper, more emotional and frustrating Story. That's why I adore Digimon, as a Series, so much. I enjoyed Pokemon as well, but there's always Ash, resetting himself every Season and plotwise ... it's starting to get frustrating. The Games are good, tho.

Not gonna lie. When I was just a child, Gatomon digivolving into Angewomon made me 100% believe cats can transform into angels. I guess this is because I was so extremely young, that I was not able to separate fiction from reality yet. It's interesting how different that can be for some. I was EXTREMELY realistic as a child and for as far back as I can remember I always seperated fantasy from reality. Of course this also means I had a VERY boring childhood and never believed in faries or any of that stuff. Warp Digivolving, also known as Super Digivolving, Matrix Digivolution, or Perfect Digivolution is the term for when a Champion Digimon (in this case Gatomon), digivolves to Ultimate (Angewomon). So yeah, it fits.

Thats why Agumon & Gabumon shouts Warpu Shinka when Digivolving straight from Rookie to Mega and later Cyber Sleuth solidfying it as not exclusive to just Mega evolution. Even the latest Survive game illustrates Warp Shinka as its own. Matrix, Perfect and Super follow different scenarios to achieving levels. Only Super Digivolution/Chou Shinka is the Standard routine for Champions whereas the others are achieved via nontraditional means Matrix Digivolution in simplex terms is Evolution that surpasses normal evolution just like Digital Nature Ability (D.N.A.). Their partners always shout Shinka with no prefix when hopping from Rookie to Mega or Champion to Ultimate. Perfect & Ultimate Digivolution in Savers is just to tell you what stage you'll get. Its all about the Digisoul charge that matters. Another massive difference was the way the shows were presented. I remeber so clearly just how dark and awful the world of Digimon can be, I remember season one where Tai forced Agumon into digivolving beyond his capacity and creating a monster from it that almost killed all of his friends and Agumon himself. Showing how abuse and trauma will manifest and fester into a monster. Pokémon of course has its dark sides but the show never showed how horrible people can be in the same light Digimon did. They never showed the homesickness preteens and kids will have struggling to survive in a world that they shouldn’t be in. I love both of them tho and they each have their charms, instead of fighting over which one is better I think we should embrace them together

Fun fact that non digimon fans may not know due to anime causing misconceptions, digimon don't evolve in a straight line, an agumon for example doesn't always evolve into a greymon, he can also evolve into tyrannomon, and meramon, all depending on how he was raised, this is why the evolutions don't always appear like just an older version of the same digimon, the main characters of the anime are the exception, not the norm, and even the first anime does show that their digimon can evolve into something else when agumon turned into skulkgreymon instead of metal greymon.

As a mostly pokemon fan, slowly dipping my feet into digimon, there is one thing I really like so far. Digimon evolve based on how you treat them. Feed them and don't allow them to die in fights too often? You get a literal god on your team! Don't feed and abuse them? Here is a piece of shit, like, literally shit. And then there's pokemon, which, besides a few exceptions, will evolve and happily grow under you, no matter how you treat them. Edit: A lot of people mention friendship evolutions and dark pokemon. The second one is specific to a spin-off series though. And friendship evolutions are a very simplified version of what digimon has, with little to no negative consequences for mistreating your 'mon.

The important thing to remember about Digimon when comparing them to Pokémon is that their evolution lines aren’t linear because they’re Digital Monsters comprised of data, so typically a Digimon has evolution lines run horizontal meaning several can reach the same final evolution through another tree from Champion to Ultimate and not directly point A to B. Digimon evolution forms are: In-Training I > In-Training II (which tend to scale a bit with Pokémon starters) > Rookie (tends to be around a Pokémon’s second evolution in terms of power) > Champion (and above tend to wildly and exponentially jump in power so at this point and past it Pokémon no longer can scale to them typically) > Ultimate (tends to be where Pokémon gods are at power) > Mega > Ultra/Burst (Mega/Ultra/Burst tend to be DBZ levels of power). Most Pokémon second forms would fall under Rookie/just touching Champion Digimon power levels. Source: Trust me, I Digimon and Pokémon competitively. And Gatomon, used in this clip, should have floored that Mienfoo without evolution because she’s a powerful level Champion form. Digimon Power isn’t based on size like how you can generally think of with normal (not legendaries) Pokémon.

The funny thing about that is that Tailmon is a pretty strong Adult, but at the same time, can be as weak as a Child. The strength of Tailmon comes from the Holy Ring on its tail. If you remove it, it gets weaker, making it perfectly plausible to be at the level of Mienfoo or even weaker. ...Though Tailmon here DID have the Holy Ring, so that Mienfoo is a true hero. In the Manga for example, strong Pokemon can get VERY violent and strong, and size isn't as important as the strength itself of the Pokemon. A Pokemon with a Good Attack can send flying a frigging Regi variosu times it's size XD. So, depending of how strong was that Mienfoo, it makes sense.

The series can't really be compared just because of the power scaling. In Pokémon, the scaling is incremental, and it's still possible to take a first or second evolution form and become a powerhouse all the way to the endgame. In Digimon though, the scaling is exponential. By the endgame of the series, anything lower than ultimate is basically worthless against the threats.

Digimon really doesn't have spin-offs. It instead has 2 mainlines: World and Story. World games tend to do whatever the fuck they want, tamagatchi style gameplay to dungeon crawler action games. Story games tend to be more in line with traditional RPGs. The one you played was probably either World DS or Dawn/Dusk (They're only called World games in the west and are actually just called Story in Japan FYI). But yeah those transformation scenes are definitely only in there to cut production costs :P Still badass moments regardless, especially with Brave Heart kicking in :)

Sweet animation! Man, looking back on it, Even the subject matter of Digimon was far more intense as a kid. Pokemon was always about loving the pokemon world, and Digimon dealt with serious struggles with all the kids. Parents splitting up, being a latchkey kid, being out-of-place and lonely amongst peers, smart kids getting bullied, depression and isolation, fear of death. Digimon was pretty metal and underappreciated.

Those were the heavy focus of the original series and it literally took working through these problems to use their Digimon's strongest forms, what do you mean "didn't approach properly" they were very upfront about them and IMO handled most of them fairly well for an anime I'm not saying it's perfect but given the time period and the content it was incredibly well done. Sure it's nothing compared to real life experience but it never will be. You cannot take such serious things and put them into a show and have everyone agree that it's a perfect representation. This is because everyone responds to the situation differently and will say stuff like "that's not realistic" because it wasn't how they responded, personally I fully closed off from everyone around me for 5 years due to a bad home life and getting bullied at school dove heavily into alcohol and reading and became severely depressed though I'm mostly better(still obsessed with reading and still drink every once in a while but that is nothing new), but I acknowledge that others become angry and confront people and scream and shout and just overall respond with hate or continue trying to be friendly only to take the hits and get back up again and continue to push forward because accepting whats going on would be worse for their mental health and others throw themselves into work or study, or so many other responses, simply put I don't think your giving Digimon enough credit for what it does.

It's kinda a thing that things directed at boys are a lot more violent and serious everywhere in the world. Like when you hear something is aimed at boys automatically death and life threatening scenarios are the norm and it's not uncommon for things to end with thousands of enemy minions dead in the first 30 minutes. The reason for this is boys react to the action and death by getting pumped up, it's cool and something exciting, I'm not saying girls can't but generally it's more of a dude thing, it's also the reason men tend to end up more violent and impulsive we are fed violence and constant action in almost everything we watch or buy, even down to simple childrens toys girls got dolls and house sets while guys got guns and dinosaurs. It's a common mistake that Digivolving is always forced and temporary (because that's what the protag Digimon tend to do), but Digimon can naturally and permanently(*) Digivolve into a next form if they grow older and stronger. Taichi's Wargreymon is at the same level as the Four Sacred Beasts who by Adventure and Tamers context are closest to a god in the DW something an average Wargreymon wouldn't get to. Basically, the Strength of a Digimon, it's Raw Power, depends of the amount of Data it has gathered over time. Digimon bonded with Humans tends to have a lower amount of Data, since they don't tell to kill and eat other Digimon (Too much). So, they end being weaker than Wild Digimon. BUT, a Human can share the Data of it's Emotions with the Digimon. This Data doesn't fully integrate with the Digimon so it eventually disappears and they end as weak as before, but while it lasts, that Emotional Data gives them a massive Power Up, being enough to send a Child directly into Ultimate. So, on their own, Digimon with Human Partners TENDS to be weaker (Not always the case, the Renamon in Tamers DID kill and eat a lot of Digimon to grow stronger before the story started, and the others also tended to kill and eat the villains, so the Digimon in Tamers are pretty stronk XD). But while they are with their Human, they can get a Power Up that makes them really strong.

Yeah, its worthy to note that evolution in Digimon isn't the same as evolution in Pokemon. In japanese, the champion stage is Adult. Digimon literally just evolve through aging. I mean, if we include hax, we have Magnamon, the being that literally wins either because it was strong enough, or because it would be a miracle for it to win. (Though there might be the exception of if the fight is really even) UlforceVeedramon, a being so fast and with such regen, instant deletion doesn't work on it Proximamon, who rewrites all of reality merely be existing for a blink. Apocalymon, the trash can of the world, therefore is unable to die for a prolonged period of time. Alphamon, who can quicksave and -load. And many more, but those are the ones that came to my mind right away.

The powerlevels and level of violence between both franchises are simply too different. In pokemon fighting is basically like a sport and most mons dont have much power all things considered. In digimon, being weak means death and often there are high stakes involved, so as early as perfect (ultimate in the english releases) level they become walking disasters.

I don't really know that much about Digimon and I do agree that it's mostly true that the concept of Pokemon battling is sport based and tame, but if you go by the Pokedex, you know that Pokemon function the same as animals in real life being weak still means death. Games aside (where in most cases, digimon are treated more like pokemon style companions), partnerships are mostly born from mutual agreement or due fate in anime and manga.

She is part of the Four Great Dragons who are stated by the DB Booklet to rival Qinglongmon from Digimon Adventure and she and Goddramon defeated Milleniumon who was said to be a distortion of the Digital World and at that rate the Digital World would be destroyed. Qinglongmon is part of both the Four Great Dragons and the Four Holy Beasts. The Holy Beasts uphold the space-time of the entire Digital World an infinite,multi-layered world with servers(worlds/universes/multiverses) in the layers that's beyond the Network (multi-layered, 6 layers/dimensions) and Human World (your conventional infinite multiverse). They passively keep the Digital World and many other worlds from collapsing into a world of darkness/nothingness and they can even help with the Human World. EDIT: "Beyond" is used as in the Digital World is in a hierarchical position superior to the Human World and Network like a higher dimension. I think one of the main best points of Pokemon is that it's relatively simple and easy to understand what to do. The games don't really change their formula- they do that in side games though they have tested the waters with Let's Go and Legends Arceus. Digimon is cool but the games have switched genre here and there and memorizing evolution lines can be a bit daunting compared to Pokemon. You know exactly where a Pokemon will end up when it evolves while Digimon can become a myriad of things, which is a pro in its own way. It's a neat way of showing they are digital beings, software can change willy-nilly when need be. Also, when it comes to power scaling, it absolutely is tilted to Digimon. I always saw Digivolving as the same as going up bits in computer processing power: 1-bit, 2-bit, 4-bit, 8-bit, 16-bit, and so on. By the higher stages, the same Digimon has grown in power exponentially while a Pokemon grows much more tamely in comparison as Pokemon are bound to somewhat sensible physical boundaries (keyword somewhat, they are monsters after all). That said, I do love both series. They both have their charms and their downsides.

I always liked Digimon more tbh, in most of the games, I only really travelled down one line for each digimon and then when a new game comes out, I try a different path, this makes it so that while there is some familiarity, the evolutions never get repetitive and I'm always surprised when I find something that I've never seen before.

For me that's a point of why i love Digimon games, you don't know what you're having unless you get it, in Decoded i loved that they managed to simplify the formula of the first game where the training and meal you give affect their evolution as well how many times they fight, and now in Cyber Story you can select what evolution you want but still needing to complete some requirements like being in a certain level or have X stats higher. The only time i feel rage with this system was in Decoded (3DS) trying to get Veemon but to get it the Digimon need 1 point of speed higher than the others evolution and have to be done in 1 day, the problem is that the speed training sometimes give you a higher point of stats and if you get that extra point then restart because another Digimon appear, it's needed to be exactly what the evolution required (i think it's 8 point for Veemon while 9 get you another Digimon). The evolution in that game may look complicated but after a while you will get used to it before you realized it

Pokémon is linear growth while digimon is exponential. However, in a battle of all Pokémon versus all digimon, Pokémon do win as their most powerful creatures are significantly stronger than the most powerful digimon, being as they have entities who can literally control time and space, obliterate moon-sized asteroids on a whim, and manipulate the memories of every creature in the planet simultaneously. I’ve seen some insane nonsense from digimon, but I haven’t seen anything that could directly destroy entire planets aside from the D-reaper. Please inform me if any of them have demonstrated this feat though, I haven’t seen all of digimon media and I feel like there have been some more insane things than what has been displayed in the anime alone.

@@alphastronghold715 Omegamon/Omnimon Alter-B. It literally has the ability to destroy both the physical world and digital world through a single action. The only reason it was stopped was because the person who was commanding it decided to test out its power on a lesser scale before destroying both realities which gave the protagonists enough time to weaken and defeat it (if I remember correctly, it took an incredibly powerful antivirus program made by the greatest minds in the digital world just to weaken it enough for the protagonists to defeat it and even then it was incredibly powerful)

Digimon is a competitor because it doesn't rinse and repeat the same game over and over, it instead experiments, does things differently. Of all their games, it's very rare they do the same thing twice. Granted, that also makes the fanbase far less consistent. And many of their games were complete dumpster fires. Nothing against pokemon. They both do things differently. That's why they're such great competitors. If they both did the same thing, one would fade into obscurity (probably digimon because of it's inconsistency, and a less dedicated fanbase.)

(1st flawed but nostalgic,2nd terrible, then 3rd GOAT) Also Yugioh and digimon both had the core of their franchise be something a little more niche than a video game series, digimon was a V-pet and Yugioh was a manga that then became a TCG.

@@Roboshi2007 I'd argue digimon, more the games and its lore than anything, is more directly comparable to Shin Megami Tensei, the monster taming game that predated pokemon. A lot of thematic similarities and usage of outright mythological and religious figures and dark topics, and as an example Digimon World 2 straight up had you make digimon join by upping their affinity before battle somewhat similarly to talking down a demon but simpler, and back then the data/vaccine/virus triad was treated more like factions than a rock paper scissors mechanic.

I kinda actually like this concept, being both a Digimon and Pokemon fan myself, And though they'll never an actual crossover for- reasons- I noticed the super effective sound was used when Angewomon used Celestial Arrow. And In my headcanon if they *did do a Pokemon and Digimon crossover,* the Holy/Light attribute would kinda be like the Fairy Type, which I like that was used for this. It likely wouldn't be, since "fairy types" exist in Digimon (although it's strictly just a species thing and has no type advantage). That said, since Digimon and Pokemon don't have matching typings, I would think it's unfair to say that Digimon would be beholden to Pokemon's typings. A fairy Digimon wouldn't do increased damage to a Pokemon dragon type, although WarGreymon's dramon destroyers would be a different story since it's not a type advantage, it's an anti=dragon weapon.

​@@Katiemcluxie There are Fairy Digimon and Fairy Pokemon. In Pokemon the Fairy typing contributes to Pokemon's typing chart in relation to whom it is stronger or weaker against. In Digimon a Fairy Digimon is just that, a Fairy digimon. It's typing is just what type of digimon it is (For example, Lillymon and Rosemon are Fairy Type Digimon). Elemental typings are kinda "as needed" when it comes to games, since there is no singular main Digimon series (technically there's 2 but since Digimon doesn't have 2-3 games a year it's part of the reason Digimon games seem less consistent. Part of the reason. ) However the Virus/Data/Vaccine typings are the core typings of digimon, and are typically seen as more important in general than any other elemental typings, at least in my experience.

The companionship in Digimon felt way more cogent. I always faced a bit of existential horror when switching from Pokemon to Digimon. Digimon recruited humans to help them with their mission and the monsters had a mutual exchange with the humans. They continuously consent to fighting, fight on their own terms, and they communicate with their partners the whole way through. Pokemon... eh... what? Kids capture animals and make them fight... to be the best trainer? That doesn't sound too mutual.

The problem is people who try to compare them. They are both great. Digimon are based on virtual pets. Pokemon are based on beetle fighting that was a hobby in Japan.

I enjoy both Pokémon and Digimon. I personally prefer Pokémon, but Digimon are pretty cool. I remember watching Digimon fusion when I was 11 off sick from school, and became obsessed with Digimon for a good while. As much as Digimon is cool, Pokémon has always been something I've been interested in a lot more and has stuck with me throughout the years.

Makes sense; Gatomon would probably be considered Normal, _maybe_ Normal/Steel, weak against Fighting either way, while Angewomon could be a few typings, but I'd say she's Ghost/Fairy, being a benevolent symbol of the afterlife and whatnot. Either way, Gatomon gets destroyed until she Warp Digivolves and smears Mienfoo goo across the floor.

Gatomon's signature attack is 'Lightning paw' so you could argue she should be Electric-type but personally, I think Normal -type, or Fairy-type since she is a divine Digimon, even though she doesn't really show it until she evolves, and Angewomon is definately Fairy-type Not that elemental weaknesses would make much difference here, if you ask me: Meinfoo the first form on a two-stage line, so it can't be very high level, Despite looking and often being treated like a Rookie/Child-level Digimon, Gatomon is actually a Champion/Adult, putting her on a level-playing field with things like Greymon and Leomon (I would say most fully evolved Pokemon are on par with an unusually strong Champion-level Digimon, maybe a weak ultimate if they're a pseudo-legendary or something) So, it might have been a tough fight but I reckon she could have won, even if she didn't evolve~

Actually Gatomon wouldn't be either of those types as she is a Light Digimon and the closest thing Pokémon has to a Light type is Fairy. Also, all Champion Digimon would beat any basic Pokémon.

I'm pretty sure Arceus would just accidentally erase the entire universe accidentally if they were to go on a legitimate fight with no one holding back (Arceus, when seen, is usually just one of its thousands of parts). Its battle theme in Legends: Arceus sounds like if it's corrupted or some crap. But if Lucemon X can survive that, I'm pretty sure it'd be an epic battle.

Digimon and Pokémon are two franchises that I’ve come to enjoy as time goes on. I like digimons darker tones in its shows, games, and also just it’s Mons honestly lol however Pokémon as a whole has taken my childhood and has given me an experience of catching them all for a decade. Both franchises have their ups and downs especially Pokémon however you just can’t say there is not a Pokémon game you don’t enjoy. Digimon is still really good and if you haven’t watched/played any I highly suggest it (Have not played digimon survive though so I may get that over scarlet/violet)

Anyone confused about how digimon work; they are made of data and each stage represents a sort of stage not only of maturity but data size in general. A good example is say a rookie is made out of Bytes, an adult (or champion) is made out of kilobytes, a perfect (ultimate) is megabytes and so on. This is why most mega level digimon (often final stage) are tiny in size; think of them as a huge program compressed into a small folder like you used winzip or winrar. At least that's how I think of it. So when you put a biological creature like say a monkey against the data representation of the military database (tankmon), well...

I kind of agree for the most part... except for the bit about Megas. Even your average Mega is way larger than one would expect (though size is inconsistent in the Digimon franchise). For instance, whereas WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon (the former being THE most famous mega level by virtue of being the primary mega form of series mascot Agumon) are only about two times the average size of a human in the original, in the 2020 Reboot they're legitimately kaiju-sized, and that's not even getting into the larger ones like Goddramon and Holydramon and Millenniummon in the reboot, who are so larger that one of the claws of the former dwarfs entire mountains, and when Millenniummon evolves further into ZeedMillenniumon, it makes the aforementioned Goddramon and Holydramon look microscopic in comparison.

Although if we're going beyond mega we'd probably reach Terabytes, PetaBytes, Exabyte and even further. It also makes me wonder about that realm between the digital world and the real world; hinted at in games and the anime, but that's something entirely different XD

I'll add my tidbit of information about Sizes that I have collected over time of researchign the franchise (I spend way too much time researching a franchise of toys, while I could be doing something productive XD). Basically, Strength and Size are linked by the same thing, amount of Data. Let's say the normal Size of an Agumon is 1 Meter of Height. The amount of Data it has will change how big it is. If it has very little Data, it may be 70 centimeters of height. If it has A LOT of Data, it could be 2 meters in height. And, since Data affects both Size AND Strength, you can tell which Agumon is stronger by it's Height. Of course, the "Standard" Size of different species are different. a Renamon is naturally taller than an Agumon, but it doesn't make her naturally stronger, they simply use their Data differently to form their bodies. What makes the difference is how tall they are based on teh standard height of their species. And, of course, this is made even mroe notoriouys the bigger the standard size of a species gets. A WarGreymon can be the size of a particlarly big dude, or be big enough to strangle friggign Godzilla. Though this doesn't mean that you are wrong about Compression. Lots of Digimon can Compress themselves to a certain extent. Damn, a Hacker can Compress a Digimon himself to turn a city-size bird into one he can have in his living room, as it was seen in Cyber Sleuth. But of course, the more you want to Compress something, the more skilled you need to be. A bad programmer may be able to Compress a file by only 5% while someone working at the top of Microsoft may get a 80% Compression with no data lost XD. So, let's say the Digimon is good enough to Compress itself to 70% of it's size. A Digimon taht was 2 meters tall could end as small as 60 centimeters tall, so imagine a 60 centimeters tall WarGreymon XD. But a REALLY strong WarGreymon that was strangling Godzilla, even compressed by 70%, would still be pretty big XD.

While there are issues with fandoms on both sides, I think it is ultimately the Pokemon side that needs to put in the most work, because while there are people who like both, digimon fans tend to have experienced both, and either prefer digimon or just didn't get into Pokemon. Meanwhile there's been many times a pokemon fan made some remark about digimon without actually knowing what it is, and it's ultimately the pokemon fandom that had started the feuds, and Digimon fans bitter about it.
