This is why I couldn't get into Bleach. I only watched the first twenty episodes but everything I saw reminded me of either Naruto or YuYu Hakusho. It's where that pretty much all shounen anime can be mapped out by the protagonist's power levels. This is why I love Code Geass. Lelouch never gets more powerful over the show's course. Arguably he gets weaker since he loses all control over his power.
@completelyaccurate Жыл бұрын
Imo the first 22 episodes of bleach are it's worst I would recommend giving it another try as the soul society arc which is like the best arc in the anime starts right after
@thomasffrench3639 Жыл бұрын

Death Note is a shonen, yet it doesn't follow this structure at all. Nor do Lucky Star or Rent-A-Girfriend, which are also shonen. Shonen simply means the target audience is boys aged 12-18. That's it. It says nothing about the content of the anime.

Steel Ball Run is an excellent take on the hero's journey for multiple reasons. Johnny isn't a perfect human being in any way from the start, and even by the end, he still has flaws. But his journey of becoming a better person also deviates in that not only does Johnny's character and morality fluctuate and regress at times instead of just being a straight path to greatness, he also spurs much of his personal change of his own volition, unlike most hero's journeys where the hero slots into some predestined role and is guided by circumstance. Gyro fills both the mentor and helper traits, and unlike the usual partner that is overshadowed by the main character, Gyro's character at times intentionally overshadows Johnny's, indicating to the reader that Johnny isn't some special prodigy and that Gyro is just as integral in the story as Johnny is. Gyro also has flaws, but unlike the usual side character flaws that often involve being too "serious" or not confident enough in themselves (i.e. Vegeta, Sasuke, Aki), Gyro's flaws are only in relativity; he is ultimately much more confident in himself than Johnny is in himself, and while Johnny is willing to do whatever it takes to get the corpse parts, Gyro's hesitancy toward extreme measures can be interpreted as a flaw or as a moral good. Usually, the hero finds themselves failing multiple times before succeeding, ramping up to a final major failure (an "abyss" or "ordeal") before overcoming it to success. However, Johnny instead fluctuates between success and failure at realistically random intervals, sometimes of his own doing and sometimes due to sheer circumstance. What complexifies Johnny's journey the most from the traditional hero's journey is that it's not made explicit what counts as failure or success. For example, in the final chapters of SBR against Diego, it could be argued that Johnny both wins and loses.

one more thing these Shounen animes are the most popular in America than other countries because idiots always trying to compare power levels and who can beat who fights. as for Japan and other countries shounen anime is pretty much trash that only middle schoolers will consume. as slice of life anime is more popular outside of america, and gundam too is more popular in other countries and not america. the only exception is One Piece

I just watched Frieren and that has to be one of the most unique shounen I’ve watched so far. It just felt so different and I didn’t even realize it was based off a shounen manga, until I looked it up. I thought Forsure it was based off of a light novel. Hell’s paradise felt different as well, and of course spy x family is, too. There’s still unique ones out there.

I wish hxh and berserk were referenced. Hmm... actually, an explanation of the idea of "shounen" used in the video would've been helpful. Otherwise, you're basically saying, "As I'm using the idea of 'shounen' to be in this manner, where the structure of the story and characters are very similar, I want to point out (in a negative way) how similar they usually all are." But... if you're intention was to include all of what could be 'shounen', then you're kind of just scratching the surface of popularity (all though one piece was missing?)... Yeah, in summary, the video was basically "I see very similar things in these things I'm seeing and I don't care to see it so often."... Have you read the synopsis of "wind breaker" or whatever? Man... some manga or anime people just want work. Heck if it's the same story every time.

if i can compare Mha and jjk together and see which one i enjoy the most, Its definitely mha. Ik, very controversial opinion but tbh, this show is what i love about any shonen animes ive watched. It doesnt follow too many of the same trope over and over and unlike jjk, it has more slice of life episodes that can run up to 4 or 5 episodes before a new arc. Letting itself explore the world and the characters more. Jjk however barely does any of that. It doesnt even decide to take its time with their characters and most of their arcs are either 6-12 episodes long. And this is only 2 seasons. The show seems like its trying to hurry up and wrap up its story by just killing off their characters way too early and doing poorly at it. Its flashbacks takes like an entire episode long, It writes most of its characters off half the chapter, And its too focused on its villains more than the heros as if we should "sympathize" with them. None of this even remotely applies to MHA. I only watched 5 seasons of it so far so i hope im not wrong yet, but i do know is that its far more less boring and edgy than what jjk is.

Fr like some of the stuff he was saying wasn’t rlly hero’s journey. Like death note?? Rlly?? Yeah he was called to the book, but it’s more of a psychological thriller than any kind of hero’s journey. And there’s so many other shonen he hasn’t mentioned. I’m not gonna lie, I don’t really care if a genre is repetitive if the story and the characters are good. I was shocked when watch this vid because wdym hero’s journey is bad? I mean yeah you could get tried of it with characters reaching point A to point B and some adventures along the way, but that’s basic story structure? Especially if it’s something for young boys or kids. It works well and the story structure isn’t the problem with some of these shows, it’s how the author makes those individual traits not really work well, or the characters don’t get any kind of development at all sometimes, like tanjito.
