One thing you didn't mention: When Hari interviewed Kal Penn and Kal stated he hated Apu YET he portrayed Taj an Indian caricature and he was okay with dressing up as a terrorist.

This was such a pleasure to watch. I knew something bothered me about his documentary but you put it so well. I'm not Indian so I feel like I shouldn't get to decide how Indian people feel about the character. As an arab man if they had a character who owned a shawarma restaurant I wouldn't be offended. If the character was a terrorist maybe I would be. But at the end of the day people are going to be A-holes as you mentioned. Simpsons soul intent wasn't to hurt Indian people or make them the victims of bullying. I also think about all the great depth they gave Apu that some Indians could be proud of. He was sucha likeable character and evolved people will see him as more than just an accent but as a human being. Of all the stereotypes portrayed on the symptoms Apu had the most depth in my opinion. As for Kal Penn, the guy is wearing a white hat in that documentary but has profited from movies where he plays a stereotype. I say he can feel how he wants to feel but how about giving the pay cheque back for the stereotype roles that you hated so much?. Anyway thanks for posting this video I thought it was fantastic.

I'm Scottish, I have lived in Scotland all my life so far, Glasgow to be precise. Should I be offended of Groundskeeper Willie because he talks like a stereotypical Scotsman? Or because he's quick tempered? Yes, not all Scots are violent men, but I have seen quite a few of them! And I, as well as MANY Scottish people speak in a heavy Scottish accent, and so does Willie! So if Willie can be voiced by an American actor attempting a thick Scottish accent, why can't Apu be voiced by an American actor attempting a thick Indian accent? Kal Penn is pretty much cancel culture if it was stuck inside of a person.

Agree, however there is no one Indian accent and most Indians speak with neutral accent, when I talk to my American friends they can understand me better than people with any British accent (I know there are many).

my biggest issue with the "The Problem with Apu" movie/documentary. Was when he was talking to Kal Penn from Harold and Kumar and Kal talks about what someone told him "I was called Kumar because of you" -random person "Yeah well it´s better than Apu right?" -Kal Yeah sure, one is a stoner that really likes hamburgers and smoking pot. While the other is a romantic, bowling, gardening, singing, fire fighting, clog dancing, furniture building, vegan, doctor. Yeah the stoner is way better. Side note: i´m not vegan and i´m for legalization of marijuana. still i used stoner i a negative way because like with anything. Doing it too much ain´t good. Especially when it starts affecting your life
@baka-raptor3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't want to be called Kumar any more or less than Apu, or Aladdin or anyone else for that matter. If a bully is going to use the name as an insult, it becomes an insult regardless of how I feel about the character. This is what Hari Kondabolu doesn't seem to understand. I've (surprisingly) seen all three of the Harold & Kumar movies. Kumar's character is fine, but if I had to choose between him and Apu, Kumar's getting the axe, no hesitation.

I feel bad you had to even write the second part. Your lil side note. You dhodnt have to explain yourself to anybody especially the comment section on KZbin, the word is turning into a scary place when everything you say is m Put under a microscope, I just want to know who's gonna be actors now when the world won't let someone ACT in a movie unless they themselves are that. So it gay peoe can play gay people, trans people can only play trans people, gangsters will be played by gangsters, murderers will play murderers, but who gonna play the zombies, super heros, dead bodies, ohhhh and what about husbands and wives...can't play that if your single anymore and I guess they'll have to hire the spouse of whatever actress/actor they hired...this is the direction they are trying to go, it's not their intentions because I honestly don't think they have any besides the fact theyve been hurt their whole life so they are trying to hurt back

My issue with his take on the matter is that he at one point tries to compare Apu to a minstrel of the late 1800s and early 1900s and as a black man I felt like that was a reach. Apu was one of the few intelligent characters in the Simpson’s and owned his own business, he had beneficial qualities which minstrel shows NEVER portrayed in relation to black people. Also, Im pretty sure Hank Azaria is part Iranian so…yeah…his argument was definitely was a fuckin reach.

Imagine if any portrayal of human beings in film and TV could only be positive and strong and empowering... would be quite boring! No villains, no character development, no obstacles or conflict to overcome... NOPE, everyone is perfect from the beginning. Also thank you for pointing out the prejudices that I've heard are very strong among the Indian subcontinent, this guy is either not interested in them, or not aware. I swear, to the very last scene of this doc, I couldn't decide if it was satire or not. That's how absurd it was.

I know this is old. Im glad you recognized Hari as a really good comedian. Hari's feelings are valid about Apu. The mistake Hari made is he has planted himself into the woke left. Thats unfortunate. He could of been a brilliant comedian, well, he is. Unfortunately he now wears the label of trouble maker and a leftist wokester.

I think most of us who grew up on the simpsons have quit watching the show since that golden age era of comedy the simpsons once had, is now being destroyed by PC culture and hank azaria is now a disgraceful coward who had no reason to apologize to anyone other than getting rid of a character everyone loved including indians!

When I visited India for my summer vacation in 1999, I watched a ton of Cartoon Network. I also remember watching MTV, Baywatch, WWF wrestling, Mr. Bean, and a few American sitcoms. No Simpsons though, and that was around the end of the golden age of the Simpsons. I'd be surprised if it came to India after that.

What a great video! Hari's documentary is full of hypocrisy. He is capitalizing on what is trending, and even mentioned at one point that someone else is paying for this documentary. If he were to be passionate about these social issues, he would spend his own money to have his points made. At one point, he also mentioned that this documentary will make or break his career - I don't think you need more words from the horse's mouth to tell you that he is for fame/money first and foremost. Absolutely disgusting how much of a sellout he is, while hiding behind a facade of social justice and other bullshit that he will only believe in if it makes his career and brings in the $.

That's fine if you're letting the word grow organically. Maybe it'll catch on, maybe it won't. Here though, he's trying to piggyback this new word off well known and established racially charged words. I'm not on board with that.

Bullies are going to bully no matter what. It doesn't matter the color of your skin or even how good you think you look. They find weaknesses and attatch themselves to them. If they see you get upset over a name or a quote they will keep using it to hurt you... that's just what they do. You should learn to have a thicker skin. The more they use the name or line the less it will affect you. Its not the characters fault its the bully's.
