Over the past two decades , Tyler Perry has made the transition from a playwright to filmmaker, even being able to build his own film studio. Tyler Perry films have a special place in the Black community, as what Tyler has accomplished is quite rare among Black filmmakers. While Tyler Perry has made Black women the forefront of his films, there are a lot of issues with his films that have gotten increasingly worse with time. While I can respect Tyler’s accomplishments, he is not above critique and in this video I break down the problem with Tyler Perry’s films and suggestions for what he should do moving forward.
What are your thoughts about Tyler Perry’s films? What is your favorite Tyler Perry film and why? Should Tyler let other people in his writing rooms? Comment below!

It may be that Perry is a wolf in sheep's clothing. He started out innocently with a moral to each story. Now that he's got people hooked he's putting out shameful stories with characters championing all the worst possible vices. The progression of Perry's work is a literal trap.

Hollywood makes movies for Adolescents. So this is better, he hires lots of Black Actors. I am Black and I work in Hollywood. I guarantee if you were offered a job with Oprah sweeping the Studio floors, you would take it and move here. Hollywood has wonderful perks that come with those jobs.

Those movies are traumatizing for young impressionable minds. Black women esp black ones are associated with struggle love, abuse, and pain. His movie exaggerate the trauma of black households and it exploits black women and their imagery. I even used to think…is this my fate? Abuse? Even though in real life my life didn’t have those experiences. Media is powerful.

If Tyler's the only writer on his productions, he should spend more time on them and get some co-writers. With all of this, I'm fine and know what to expect from him. Instead of 2 weeks, he needs a few months at least then take a break and work on the rest of the season. He giving us tropes that are getting more and more piss-poor.

I grew up on Tyler Perry movies…..but I’m starting to HATE this battered black woman trend in his movies & even others Why TF can’t a brownskin/darkskin black women get pure untainted love & a happy ending? Why does BLACK LOVE in movies always gotta be toxic? And Tyler Perry gotta big studio. Why can’t we get a FANTASY FILM?! He could do black superhero movies if he wanted to🤷🏾‍♂️

Good points. I don't agree about the holy oil comment. If you think about it in context, that character is not to be taken seriously and is deeply religious. Also, it was a signal to his religious audience that he doesn't support "proud" sex workers.

Tyler Perry is a dense writer. He's not deep enough to get into legal and political issues, which is why you don't see the depth in his writing when he goes that route with Madea goes to jail and The Oval. He writes for a specific demographic, which are people who like simple entertainment and it insults people's intelligence.

So many people have criticized Tyler Perry for not hiring Black Writers for his films and choosing to do his own writing. Others have complained that all his films are too similar. The truth is Tyler Perry is the biggest Fraud and a man with many dark secretes, unfortunately those secrets have included me for the last 7 years, I just wasn't aware of it until a group of women brought it to my attention because I don't watch his shows. Tyler Perry doesn't use writers because everything he has produced since 2014, movies, television series and plays are created from one book which he uses over and over to write his content, and that book happens to be mines. (Don't worry I am not promoting book sales) Tyler Perry, Lee Daniels, Oprah Winfrey, Andy Cohen, Dan Garcia, Devon Franklin, Karin Gist and so many others have used a book I wrote in 2014, to make numerous films and televisions series. I was never contacted for my consent, and in spite of them earning Millions, I have never been compensated or given credit for the creativity they have have managed to pass off as their own for the last 7 years. These people have received awards from the NAACP, BET, and other organization for producing content they stole from me and they willingly accepted these awards. You don't have to take my word for it. You can see it for yourself right in the comforts of your home. Using a Ultra 4K television, down load his Play, Meters Farewell Play from Amazon or BET and record it in slow motion, you are going to see images you have never seen on a regular television, what you will also see is that they used a graphic Artist to create a digital version of my book with Cartoon Characters based on my characters and the scenarios in my book, they then filmed over it, but if you pause the frame you can still see the Cartoon characters near the cast, this should not be seen on a live stage play. You will also see what these people are promoting is not Christianity, but a LGBT Manifesto, The Chakra pagan religion and sex between adults and children. You will see much more.

So I've only seen his Madea movies. I wouldn't say they're awful like if I had nothing else to watch and I wanted some entertainment, those movies aren't bad choices. In regards to this constant criticism about Perry trying to pander to every Black stereotype ever... bye Felicia. Every comedian does that and none of yall get mad about them. However, when people say Perry's movies depict darker Black ladies as bad or angry and stuff, I understand and there's some truth to that. Perry isn't a Saint none of us are, but some of that is also on us! If I, as a darker individual, see another darker individual being portrayed bad on a show or a movie and my instant reaction is "they're trying to tell me I'm a darker individual and I'm flawed", Perry is only half to blame. I'm the one who would be giving my power and color to that movie or show. The more people realize our power, individuality and things like that are mostly within us and under our control instead of a movie, the sooner we'll heal as Black people.
