I did read somewhere on line that a student was suing their University for incomplete education/facts or something which they believed damaged their career prospects. Some of the most stupid people I have ever known have gone to University. I used to watch students cross a busy road outside their University............ my God, if their Graduation Certificate was on the other side 30% would never make it across alive.

Right! If you only ever ate chickpeas as your source of protein (and never anything else with protein at all), you could meet your daily protein requirement, but still be deficient. Obviously that'd be a real challenge to do, but it's important to understand that it's not 100% "a myth." en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protein_combining You could also just eat more chickpeas (exceed the base amount of protein you need) to meet the amino acid needs.

One of the most helpful videos ever. Sometimes i just don't know where to look anymore for the facts. I grab a bit of this if it sounds sensible, take a tip from there. Dr. McDougall makes a lot of sense overall. The food is right up my alley. I never take advice from any of the smoothy guzzling healthfreaks. Won't even watch any of them. I'm rather traditional and i always homecook everything. Nothing wrong with it if you want to do and be like that, but it's not for me. I like regular dinners with some starch and some veggies, some salad from the garden, drink some juice, bake some flatbreads for a little chilli dip, cook something nice from forks over knives on the weekend, Nothing fancy. I just need to know what i can eat and what to avoid. I really like rice and beans tossed into a bit of stirfry though, yummy. I think just eating varied and fresh, ditching the meat, eggs and dairy is mostly in the right direction. Most cooking programs give me an instant heartburn just looking at the amounts of fat, cream, meat, eggs and sugar. I probably don't get it all right, but mostly! Thanks so much, Dr. Greger! This is health education at it's finest. Just like most of us, i was going in the wrong direction thinking i was eating right.

Hello Dr. Greger! I have a question for you, it would be amazing if you could answer it :) I was about one year vegetarian (I would say 90% vegan) before I went fully vegan, 6 years ago. Within my "vegetarian" year I got herpes simplex for the first time ever and got it about once or twice a year since then. A few weeks ago after another serious outbreak I started reading about what I can do about it (my mum is a health practicioner and tried to help me with it but then again.. an outbreak happened :/ Also just to be clear about that: I am serious about my healthy vegan plant based diet and I do sports 5 times a week.) and I read that taking a L-Lysine supplement combined with Zinc really helps against Herpes outbreaks. Right now I am trying it out and I am hoping that it will help stop the outbreaks. Do you know about any of this? I read that herpes feeds of Arginin and Lysine on the other hand stops the herpes virus from growing... Thank you so much for all your effort and your amazing videos!!

Isn't lysine typically hard to get enough of if you don't eat beans? So, then, minus beans, it seems fairly easy to design a diet that is deficient. I mean, if you eat less lysine than is needed every day, the "pools" of amino acids that the body has access to is going to be deficient in lysine. Isn't this true? ... assuming the RDAs are correct, that is.

I was invalided out of the army after 16 years service. I am now nearly 63 and am considering a WFPB diet however am concerned about protein intake and muscle waste. I was 134kg and 48% body fat three years ago now down to 108kg and 35% body fat. I have been as low as 102kg and 30% BF, but have gone up and down twice in that timeframe to around 116kg. At my fittest in the army at age 34 I was 95kg and less than 15% BF. I have lost weight with a combination of walking, reducing calorie intake and increasing plant based foods whilst still eating meat, dairy and eggs. I am really confused by the conflicting information available and whether as a senior I would get adequate protein from a plant based diet and what “adequate" really is. For example this study questions the ability of a vegan diet to provide sufficient protein for the elderly. Perspective: Vegan Diets for Older Adults? A Perspective On the Potential Impact On Muscle Mass and Strength. Jacintha Domić, corresponding author Pol Grootswagers, Luc J C van Loon, and Lisette C P G M de Groot This study proposes that a vegan diet increases the risk of an inadequate protein intake at an older age and that current strategies to improve the anabolic properties of plant-based foods are not feasible for many older adults. The authors state "this is the first article that provides an evidence-based perspective regarding the potential impact of a vegan diet on muscle mass and strength in older adults. The current perspective is highly relevant considering the envisaged shifts towards sustainable dietary guidelines." Study published on ScienceDirect by Oxford University Press on behalf of the American Society for Nutrition Any advice for me or comment on this study would be welcome.

Isn't the idea behind incomplete proteins the ratio of certain amino acids to others or even absence of some amino acids? (like essentials vs non-essential) So saying they are incomplete may technically be wrong, but if you take incomplete to mean not optimal human use or not containing all of our essential and semi-essential amino acids, would that also be a myth, or does that interpretation actually have some validity? It could very well be the case that proteins from meat are more optimized for say muscle growth, because it's already a muscle, whereas plant-bodies are very different from our bodies in terms of structure. I haven't looked into the research on this, but if anyone who has cares to comment on this, I would be very interested to know if what I just said holds any truth.
@whitneyyoung6886
@whitneyyoung6886 2 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. I think this video is out to refute the "myth" by claiming there's no validity to it. Really, it'd be a HUGE challenge to eat vegan and only eat one source of protein. If you did, you could become deficient. See here: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protein_combining Only ever eating chickpeas and nothing else with protein at all would be a challenge, though. And you could also just eat more chickpeas (exceed the base amount of protein you need) to meet the amino acid needs. As for your examples of muscle gains… I think that's heading in the wrong direction. It's quite easy to get all the amino acids you need from plants. That's why people want to consider it a "myth". So getting the right ratio of amino acids in your protein needed for muscle growth isn't too hard.

Dr. Greger will agree to this. I think he even confirmed that in a previous video quite a while back. That is not what this video is about though. This video is about a minimum protein ammount that will prevent you from developing a protein deficiency, which is almost impossible (which this video confirms). This video is not about building extra muscle. Oh and by the way, strength at old age is linked to longevity and quality of life as well, so... maybe join those gym enthusiast and eat some beans! ;) Edit: you can confirm this with every single vegan strength athlete or bodybuilder.

@q..q2291

1.8 g of protein per kg is the maximum amount that has beneficial effects for bodybuilding. Any excess protein you eat will be broken down into energy and you're left with urea which has to be excreted by the kidneys. Furthermore, excess protein intake results in increased urinary calcium excretion... So you're just making your kidneys work harder and losing calcium for no good reason.

I have a family member who really wants to build muscle and follows body builders, and tries to eat like them. I'm vegan and trying to show them that they really don't need animal protein. These body builders talk about how animal protein is more easily absorbed into the body than plant protein. I'm trying to find some evidence of this. Does anyone know if this is true or have any resources on this in particular?
@VeganAnimal
@VeganAnimal 8 жыл бұрын
The absorption advantage of meat protein is based on a 'complete' amino acid profile. This vid. shows us why this is a myth. The only thing that makes bodybuilders much bigger are steroids.
@shiningstar5792
@shiningstar5792 8 жыл бұрын
Those body builders take all kinds of drugs that cost loads of money. Everything is different when you are on these drugs, you train differently and you can eat, like, 5000 calories and still be lean because you have so much muscle from the steroids. They bang on about all the training they do and all the food they eat and accredit their muscles to their diet and training, but it's bullshit. If your friend wants to be like them, then the only way they can do it is to take steroids and other drugs like fat burners and insulin, it's all down to the drugs.

+Doug bananaboy I think you will find plant protein doesn't come with all the baggage i.e. Cholesterol, saturated fat, zero fibre and the not to mention the connection to cancers from animal protein (IGF-1) And we haven't even mention planet or the animals.. Also we need only a small amount of protein in fact I think it's as little as 13% of food consumed daily..

Hi, I'm trying to construct/understand, fully, the argument to refute/debunk the food combining myth. Directly and with scientific sources. However, many materials, even the video above, use slightly roundabout ways to present the case, and oftern do not directly address it. I have a friend who recently did a training where they were specifically taught this theory and her being straight out of training, my unresearched arguments are weaker. "This is not true" is not an argument, that is a claim. An argument would contain proof and sources. The video above, which I found whilst searching for material, both scientific and popular, does not present the full argument. The articles flashed on the screen look scientific but the titles do not direclty address the quesion (I will nevertheless try and look them up, to see, if their bodies do). It can be seen as using roundabout pointers. In myth debunking this leaves too much room for potential other fallacies. So can someone help me with either constructing the argument or at least point out scientific evidence to counter the claims of food combining? I'm confortable with dwelling into scientific papers, but one needs to dive in from the right end of the pool, with right keywords to avoid wasting time. And by looking at both sides, independently of what one believes or wants to believe. I might end up with the construction of convincing opposite arguments as well. Whatever the data.

Dr.MD Greger reads a lot of scientific literature and takes what he needs from them. If your concerns are truly sincere, write him directly with specific questions or go to his website (nutritionfacts.org) and ask approved health professionals who moderate the site. Research takes time and you'll waste it regardless, so stop worrying.

Sun, cholesterol and a series of skin interactions that can be easily interrupted by washing / water / sun-blocker provides vitamin D to the body. Let's hear it for cholesterol, which if we have too little actually shortens our lives or even kills us. Our body actually produces a lot of cholesterol, unlike vitamin C (which almost every other creature out there does make). We can survive without much vitamin C, but apparently we cannot survive without cholesterol. Perhaps we can fix the gene that is supposed to make vitamin C, but I have not heard anyone propose that.

In the video, a chart from a study says "myth: plant proteins are incomplete (ie lack specific amino acids)". If you go to the study, you can see that the video CUT OFF THE SECOND HALF OF THE CHART. The second half says: "reality: Usual dietary combinations of proteins are complete; specific food proteins may be low in specific amino acids". In other words, specific protein sources ARE amino deficient, but that doesn't matter because of PROTEIN COMBINING. Therefore contradicting the thesis of the video.

I'm studying nutrition at university right now and it is stated in the literature that we only get some essential proteins from certain plants, and different proteins from others. For example, Ile and Lys from legumes, (but not in grains) Met and Trp from grains (but not from legumes) and therefore combining the two ensures you get both sets. If I am to believe this contrary view I'll need more than some dude's voice on a video. Where are the recent peer-reviewed studies to back up your claims??

I knew about the fact that it is not necessary to combine food at each meal. But still i'm confused about something, according to the video i don't need to worry about combining my food like... AT ALL? Like let's say that for a week, i don't feel like eating any whole grain food... It's okay to just eat lentils, beans, vegetables without worrying about that 'combine whole grain and beans' argument? Hope i'm clear enough, i'm not english native, it is not even my second language.
@FVBmovies
@FVBmovies 8 жыл бұрын
I'd argue that whole grain foods are an essential cornerstone of well balanced diet, regardless of diet choices (vegan, veg, omni, pesk, etc). Of course you can for a week and more. Protein-wise you won't miss out if just eat lentils, beans and veggies. However, you will miss-out on their health benefits and overall nutritional value. Human species have used them for thousands of years exactly for their value.

If plant proteins are complete then why do my muscles take longer to recover then? Wait a minute... so if the body has an amino acid pool... the pool needs to be filled doesn't it? With essential amino acids which the body can not produce on its own. So yeah at some point you will need to eat to complete the incomplete protein...

I'll take the message on board, but having a mixture of soaked/fermented nuts, seeds and grains makes for an exponentially more satisfying meal. Beans on toast alone is an invitation into how to actively embrace the softness of the beans in question, contrasted against the lightly charred crispness of the bread's exterior. Done well, if it's good enough for Delia Smith, it's surely good enough for me.

Non-vegetarians get way more than they need, and so does everyone else. On average, vegetarians and vegans get 70% more protein than they need every day。)
