@@mindrolling24 Well technically, the Furs came out in 1977. But they really became popular in the early 80's, thanks to a little tv station called MTV. Once their videos started playing, they reached a wider audience and their hit song "Love My Way" catapult the group into the American mainstream. A little bit of music/mtv trivia for you.🙂

As children in the 1970s my siblings and I endured an abusive and hateful father that beat us and my mother. In 1982, when I was 15, my brother and I found our mother's body in a bathroom of our house; she'd overdosed on barbiturates, likely to escape him. Without her there to act as a buffer between us and him, we endured even worse. It was a very difficult couple of decades -- the 70s and 80s -- for us but my teens were made bearable by music from Simple Minds, The Psychedelic Furs, The Smiths and so on. It sounds cliché but it's true. It was an amazing, amazing time for music and talent and creativity. It holds as much meaning for me now as it did in 1984 when this song and many like it let me close my eyes and be somewhere else, somewhere safe if only for a few minutes. In fact, so strong is my adoration for this music that, oddly, part of me -- now 55 -- wants to go back to those times. Of course, I could do without that "other stuff" but I really miss the music that got me through it all the first time.
@oxford3006

I also grew up in the 70's & 80's with 4 brothers and 2 sisters, parents divorced, 4 older siblings were old enough to be on their own and mother remarried. Myself, younger sister and brother, my mom and her abusive husband. He would start a fight with her, beat up on her until she would leave and he would then come into me and my brothers room and drag me out to the kitchen and mentally and physically beat me for hours on end, "it was brutal" usually till 3am, I was his scapegoat for all his problems he said. This went on for about 3 1/2" years, started at about 11 tears old. I was luckily brought to my father's and not long after my younger siblings. Something that always took me to another place was this music, I'm now 57 and I too want to go back, without the "other stuff" also. This music has a beautiful way to bring back the good memories that made childhood special even though we went through some rough times. I hope you you're doing better and keep these songs with you!!!

10 months later, I'm hearing this for the first time, and thinking I need to play this for my daughter and stepdaughter (who might be familiar with it) because it's lovely. I wouldn't have heard of them if you hadn't posted some of their music on fb, years ago, when our little fb group wasn't all about politics and your cousin Sheri was on, and things were more fun! Well, we were all a little younger! Glad one of your daughters liked it. Music has been one of the strongest bonds with my husband (your fellow Berklee alumni) and my brothers and especially with my girls! Bring them up on the music you love and they'll take you to expensive concerts in your old age! (and now you're a screenwriter and movie star) regards, Marlene

@@kcbh24 At every time in history there have been lots of problems, but the 1980s were objectively much better than today, at least in the US. This is not really debatable if you were there. Freedom and liberty were in the air; people were much more patriotic and happy. Everything benefited - the economy and especially the arts. That's why music, movies, TV, everything was so much better. Liberty unleashes human creativity. Now our country is being choked out.

A song of beauty, melancholy and perfection. The opening alone is a taste of heaven. There is an enormous amount of mixed feelings and emotions that soar through the body while listening to this song. It's a shame music like this doesn't exist anymore. Yes, everything has it's time and place... and I am happy to know I was there at that exact time and place when this came out. Still listening in 2024 as if it just came out yesterday

My theory is that 80s music is both sad and happy at the same time because it was made during the cold war. We learned how to have fun and rad dance parties with the spectre of a possible nuclear holocaust in the backs of our minds. I suppose that gives us something in common with the lost generation of WW1 and the generation that endured WW2.

I was the only DJ that played Top 40 music and this song actually charted so I learned about progressive rock or new wave and was mesmerized by this song for its haunting music and lyrics. Adrian Kline, one day, YOU will be the old fart carrying on about how great it was when you were young. It might behoove you to listen to your parents' and grandparents' ramblings because I swear on the fact, that they will not be there to "bother" you with their "old stories" anymore. I felt the same way when I was young. I am so damned glad I asked them about their lives and listened to what they have to say. All that remains of their lives now, are grave markers and a plethora of memories.

You don't need to apologize for the soulless, contrived and hackneyed music that's being made today. The 80's was truly a magical time for music. Society was relatively calm, the Soviet Union fell, the economy was getting strong, but overall things were looking up. I graduated high school in 1980. Punk rock was nearly dead along with disco and the Urban Cowboy stuff was doing its thing on the sideline - And then came New Wave or Alternative and all its subgenres like Shoegazing, Dream Pop and Neo Psychadelia and all others. If there was one song that I see as a start of all of it combined with MTV was Buggles' Video Killed The Radio Star. As far as all of us longing for that day and it's return, someone said in another musics comments, "We're homesick for a place that no longer exists."

I am so greatful my dad kept 80s music alive in our household. It's 2015 and I listen to 80s music on the regular and every time I do I get such a rush. It sounds dumb but I feel like it takes me back even though I wasn't alive then (kinda silly huh). Such a great decade in music history just wish I would have been 17 then and not now. Such a haunting voice! I can never get tired of listening to this song. The 80's were the best years of my life. My best friend and I used to record ourselves trying to sing this song. He unfortunately ended his life a few years back. They played this song at his funeral and I stood over his casket and sang it to him. I still listen to our recordings quite often. See you on the other side my friend! R.I.P

Richard Butler has incredible charisma on stage, a real presence! Not all bands live up to the hype in person, but he is a rock star through and through. Saw the Furs in Minneapolis, Richard was in his early 60s, and besides his incredible voice, his dancing and swaying just captivates everyone, very hypnotic and sensual. If you have the opportunity to see them, go.

This song just transports me to a simpler time. Though the heartbreaks felt so much more tragic. But the love you felt was so real and the way it made you swoon. Being swept away like walking on air when I knew a girl loved me. Sigh, to hear her say it how it would melt me. Staring into each other’s eyes with no words. It wasn’t just one girl. But the ones that really meant something…it was like that. Our bodies were invincible. Our potentials, infinite. The world was all ahead of us and we somehow navigated those waters with no map or even a star to guide us. Some were better navigators than others. I sit here at 52 now and mind ponders life as I’ve always done even as a child. What seems like an eternity was but a fleeting moment in the scheme of things. I see teenagers today and I see us. Full of hope. Wonder. Dreams. I don’t see them as different than us at all. Technology is different, for sure. But the gleam in their eye is identical. The hope. The fear. Just trying to make it through that horrid teen stage. Not being enough. And being everything at the same time. Trying to fit in. Being the king/queen of the school. It’s all relative. We were all those things. But through it all I remember being ALIVE. Everything was a new experience. Adulthood can be mundane once you get there. Most of us choose a mediocre life. Never trying or attempting to be ALIVE like that again. I don’t think my body could take it, honestly. Lol Sorry for the length of the message. Just…thinking. This song does that to me.

Your comment makes me cry. I, too am 52 so I know exactly what we were when this and other great songs were new. The angst, the rebellion, the emotions, the idealistic beings that we were with intentions and meaningful purposes, goals to achieve and to fail to reach. Lots of reasons for tears besides just sadness at this point as well as then. I appreciate your words and it makes me happy to know there are so many others who had such profound experiences over the backdrop of the most amazing soundtrack in the history of music which was the 80s. You are always going to be young at heart and of mind, so please do not focus on the number of candles on your birthday cake. We are somewhat different from our parents' generation in mindset. I am of the class of 1989. However, I don't sunbathe and I take reasonably good care of myself, so I certainly do not look like a 45-year-old of my grandparent's or parent's generation. Do not ever close that door of feeling young and excited about this world in your heart and mind. It all boils down to what state of mind in which you live.

This song is one of the strongest reminders for knowing how much I love my wife . . . I took her to see the Furs a few years ago for her birthday (as she is an 80s music fanatic), and while watching and enjoying the show, she felt a little faint, so we walked into the lobby and sat down to rest for a bit. After a short while, we could hear the strains of this song - one of my all time favorites - echoing through the lobby . . . and while I initially felt like we were missing something special, I looked into her eyes while we were sitting and talking, and hearing this song from afar, and felt as much love as I ever have in my life. I will never forget that moment, and this song will always remind me of the greatest, deepest love that doesn't fade.
