I lived the best of both worlds, splitting my growing-up years evenly between the 1970 and 1980s. The best music, best movies, and best TV. I feel so sorry for today's kids, with poor substitutes for all that, i.e. cell phones constantly in their hands and (anti)social media.

I know what you mean. My father died in an accident last year. I often put off going to see him, too wrapped up in my own life dominated by working 70 plus hours a week. I did not see him for a long time due to Covid too. The last time I saw him was February 2020 and I had no idea I would never speak to him again as the door closed and I walked away for the last time. Truth to be told, he was always distant and I never felt I knew him but he was the only father I had ( obviously). If I could turn back time, I would reach out and visit more often. He once suggested going to see OMD together on one of their recent tours just to show interest in a band I had always followed but to my shame I declined. The one thing I want to do is pick up the phone to say hello but it can never happen. I will have to own my regrets.

Shows you how powerful this song is: my grandfather used to tell us about his early days in West Africa when he was part of a street gang called Zulashta. They were having a violent turf war with a gang called Goronzo who had at least twice the amount of members. On the night of their big street confrontation they assembled in front of a butcher’s shop. The whole street took cover but the butcher went on with his work as if he knew he was secure. This was playing very loudly on his radio and before the gangs would even take one step forward, they noticed the song and decided to call a truce. He joined the church as an ordained priest a few months later. Just goes to show you the power of the lyrics. My grandfather died in 93 but I’ll always remember him through this song.

That nostalgic, melancholic sound of the synthesizers, the sound of guitars that move away and expand like crystalline echoes, the voices floating like the wind, the gray and metallic colors of the videos. In short, the productions of the eighties and that feeling of a time without age, a time without time, a time from another dimension, the eighties, were insurmountable. I totally lived through them and there will never be another era like this, but they have stayed in my heart and mind forever... (Comment originally written in Spanish by Douglas Palacios. Thank you, Douglas. This is beautiful and accurate in any language).

It's always been chaos, it just didn;t affect you back then. But someone has always suffered in every age. The illusion of freedom was strong back then now the brick wall is here.

They were masters of the creation of simple, memorable melancholic pop tunes. This is what the Synthwave movement is trying to evoke (largely successfully) through the concept of imagined memory and nostalgia. I don't normally overthink or conceptualize retro genres and what journalists say about them but I think many of the Synthwave artists/mixes have nailed that feeling. This track is the real thing of course!

The guitarist is so amazing ! I love techno bands but because of the outstanding guitar I never get tired of them. He’s up there with The Edge and others.

I love the subtle and simplistic elegance of the guitar work. I didn't really appreciate this stuff in the 80s. Glad it turned out to be worth rediscovering.

@@Cherokeelion It's a shame Paul Reynolds couldn't expand on his guitar ability and his ear for music. I read he was pretty chewed up by the industry. He was pretty young in the 80s.
