How do you know if someone is lying to you? How often should you trust your intuition? What is the best way to deal with conflict and confrontation? These are the kinds of questions that everyone asks, and former Secret Service Agent Evy Poumpouras has devoted herself to answering them systematically and effectively. On this episode of Women of Impact with Lisa Bilyeu, Evy Poumpouras shows you how to tell if someone is lying, explains when and how you should listen to your gut feelings, talks about why she embraces confrontation, and gives a surprising lesson on why she thinks that respect is a gift--a gift she doesn’t need.
SHOW NOTES:
Evy explains how to build mental armor by dealing with small amounts of stress [3:36]
Evy talks about how she overcame her weaknesses and outperformed expectations [5:46]
How to differentiate between opinions you should heed and those you should ignore [8:22]

What is your goal in every interaction you have with people? [15:21]
In order to succeed at interrogation, you have to get your ego out of the situation [17:00]
Everyone lies. And it has nothing to do with you. It has to do with them. [19:42]
Evy used self-assessment to learn how to not let her emotions take control [20:33]
Evy explains what it means to “introduce a disruptor.” [23:48]
Why you should trust your instincts [24:51]
The more prepared you are, the easier it is to pivot if things go wrong [27:43]

How to tell if someone is lying to you [41:12]

1. Certain levels of stress are good. They teach you how to cope, they teach you how to problem solve, they teach you how to fail and then to do better the next time. 2. I am ___(put the labels you think puts you in a disadvantageous position). No one’s going to like me. If you put labels on yourself, you are putting yourself at a disadvantage. 3. You just perform. In areas, you are weak, perform. Earn your place. 4. If after you perform, people still have an issue with you, know that you are not the problem, they are. 5. Focus on putting one foot forward the other. Think about the next thing you are going to do. If I am not performing. And I’m there waiting for people to accept me, then now it’s me. 6. It’s 50% you and 50% the other person. 7. Respect is a gift. If someone wants to give it to you, they will, if they don't they don't. 8. Don't tell people you are the authority. Show them. Don't demand respect, command respect. Show you are the in charge by how do you walk into a room, how do you carry yourself, how do you speak, how do you project your voice. All those things exude power, and all those things command respect. 9. People make your impression in first five seconds. Think about what you are exuding, how you are dressed, think about the audience. You are going to wear one outfit for something and a different outfit for something else. 10. There are different versions of us. There is no just one you. What version of you are you bringing to the table? 11. Your goal shouldn’t be to make someone like or fear you. What is the end result you want? Likability is important. 12. Competent and warm not competent and cold. 13. No one is 100% bad. 14. Don't make it personal. Focus on the end result. 15. When things happen to you, rather than completely losing your mind, take a minute, don't respond, and don't do anything. Introduce a disrupter such as time or movement. 16. If you feel threatened in a situation, listen to your gut. Don't worry: about making the other person feel that you are rude. 17. Embrace and not avoid confrontation. Also, you should be able to confront people about things you don't feel right about in your life. Don't sit there and swallow it. 18. Mirror the other person’s language. If they say hi, say hi, if they say hello, say hello. Connect. But dint fake it. 19. Get in the right mindset and then decide how you want to speak to the other person. 20. 80% listen, 20% talk. 21. Talk to people not the way you want to be spoken to but the way they want to be spoken to. 22. You are not going to own my response to you. I am going to own it. 23. You have to create those barriers for yourself. You have to self-assess who you are going to let in your inner circle. Select the people in your inner circle. 24. People should audition to be in your inner circle. 25. Don't embarrass people but don't hesitate from confronting them. 26. There should be standards that you create for yourself. You get what you tolerate. 27. When you make a conscious decision to be done with someone, be done with them. 28. It should be about your mental conviction. Speak with confidence to make sure those who heard your message heard it clearly the first time. It should not be mistaken for weak or uncertain of your abilities. 29. Strengthen your voice and believe in what you are saying and why are you saying that. 30. The more adversity you deal with, the more resilient you become. 31. Repetition, repetition. Create habits that are healthy so when things happen, you default to those habits and pull out that version of you. 32. There are two types of people you should be careful of: people who are extremely self-righteous and people who use justification. 33. Look at people holistically who are they with everybody because that’s going to come back to you. 34. You feel dirty with someone be aware of them. 35. Don't get energy from the outside things such as your job, your family etc. Give your energy to those things but be mindful of how much of your energy you put out there into things. 36. Don't be surprised. Everybody at the end of the day is looking after their self-interests. 37. Don't be a victim. 38. Indecisiveness is a very dangerous thing. Indecisiveness causes us to look to others to give us the advice, it causes us to not make decisions in life, indecisiveness keeps us paralyzed, and indecisiveness is bad for our self-esteem and our confidence. I am going to do this right or wrong I am doing this. 39. You don't become this person overnight. It’s work. It’s a lot of work. 40. This person has an emergency. It’s their emergency. It’s not mine. 41. Choose to make it a lesson. 42. Remember you do not know everything. 43. “I messed up. So what? Everyone does.” 44. Have some humility. 45. Establish yourself as an authority from the moment “go”. 46. Think of your words as “money”. The more powerful and impactful the words, the more money you are putting down. My words matter and they have weight. They are going to impact the other person positively or negatively and their connection with me. 47. Don't stand behind the podium when you teach. 48. Be prepared, wear the right outfit, and do your hair and makeup in way that make you feel confident. 49. Own your shit. Be responsible for yourself even if the person sitting across you is authority. 50. If you are constantly being victimized by people, ask yourself: what am I doing to let people think they can do this to me. 51. Realize that you have choices. Fight back, speak back, or walk away. 52. Realize you have power. You can choose to not stay there in victim mentality. You can get back up. Watched all three of her videos and put it on all three. This is of so much value.

Notice how her character changed when she talked about failure being her superpower? That was her emotional side breaking out. The way she looked down and smiled is what we do when we're remembering something specific. She's probably remembering a time of her life which she failed so hard it forced her to wake up. She's grateful for the experience of that event because it fortified her. We must look at all our failures this way.

It’s so great for women, but also for teaching teens to listen to that inner voice or ‘gut’ or intuition! It is a valuable life skill that can be life saving. Additionally, to not be afraid to act on that feeling - meaning don’t be afraid to look crazy for a moment. For example, when I was about 17 I had to walk home after work at a fast food restaurant. We lived in a very, very rough area, but we were very poor and I had two after school and weekend jobs. So I took whatever shifts were offered. One night I helped close and started walking home at 11pm. Suddenly I realized three guys following me and cat calling. Then I noticed they were closing the distance between us. It felt like a pack of wolves getting closer. Just as they got within 10 feet of me I notice two adult young men about 20 feet ahead. I had never see them before, but called out, ‘hey guys wait up! You are supposed to be walking me home!’ with a cheery voice. They turned around surprised and laughed as I started jogging towards them. They had stopped to watch this strange teenager in her silly uniform coming towards them. The wolf pack stopped and then turned a corner. I never made it to the two young men, as they laughed again and went on their way. Yet, I am sure that I saved myself from being harmed that night. That was the first time I trusted my gut and took action. I wish I had done that when I was younger, as it may have saved me from being raped across the street from the apartments where we lived - in broad daylight.

This interview is so incredible! Talking about gut feelings reminds of something weird that happened last summer... I had a casual "date" last year with a tourist who was on holiday where I live. We went for dinner. Halfway through what was originally witty and intellectual banter between us, I started to feel very uneasy in this man's company. I couldn't pinpoint why, but I had developed an unshakable feeling of anxiety. So, I made my excuses to go home to sleep early etc. He invited me to go for a walk on the beach at his hotel, but I declined. Then, he offered to drive me home. I declined again. We walked out of the restaurant together and chatted a bit before we would of made separate turns. As we walked, he asked me again if I'd like a lift home. I live in a hilly Greek village, and in a moment of laziness, I thought to myself, "What's the worst that can happen if he drives me? I know these roads better than him, plus it saves me walking uphill!" However, in that moment of internal deliberation, I heard somebody call my name in a whisper, as if they were right next to me. (Which was odd, as all the bars and restaurants were so noisy.) I spun around to see who could be standing so close to me to whisper like that, but there was nobody. I suddenly had the strongest instinct to RUN. By now, my gut was in somersaults and I was freaked out by all these feelings... Plus, I didn't want this guy to think I'm a crazy person just randomly running off into the night down a busy high st lol... As I was assuring myself he is not dangerous and that I was overreacting, I turned back to look at my "date". His eyes that bore into mine sent utter chills down my spin. They were pure malevolence. I will never forget those eyes. In that instant, I heard my name called out again by the same voice. But now loudly, urgently. As I turned to the direction of the voice, I saw in the distance Alecos, my neighbour and taxi owner. He was walking some customers to in his taxi. I knew I had to RUN. By this point, I didn't care how rude or crazy I looked. I just knew I had split second timing to reach Alecos before he drove off. My "date" was left standing on the pavement. By luck, Alecos was driving his customers near my home. So my story has a safe and happy ending. However, I truly believe I was saved from a terrible experience. As for who I think was calling my name? My guardian angel.

Indeed, better to trust your intuition and look crazy, than to appear sane and possibly end up dead. I’m glad someone/something was watching out for you or maybe it was your own gut feeling, screaming at you to listen and you trusted those signs and got home safely that night.

Hi, I've been studying personality for quite some years now. Not officially though. Despite that, I can tell you that current research supports this as a possible real thing. You can look at Jungian Psychology. Other than that I have similar experiences. And I tell you, if you use that 'feeling' combined with "intuition" its like you have accelerated access to more distanced relations between information. Unfortunately, it also takes more wisdom to manage as it brings more insecurity. (In the beginning those combined skills will fail to synergize and contradict each other instead. Just keep going you'll get better at it as you go. ) Wise mentor to realise and correlate.

The other interesting aspect of this idea is that people who grew up in abusive household were forced to learn to “read people” as a survival mechanism. A that skill grows... sometimes it becomes a “human lie detector” type of skill.

I know exactly what you mean... It is absolutely absurd the way we as women are willing to risk our own safety for the sake of possibly offending someone. Unfortunately I have been guilty of this so many times, but I've learned to get better the older I get. Some times our God-given "spidey-senses" might be off skew a bit, but 9 times out of 10 they're pretty dead on accurate. We mustn't be afraid of offending someone who is giving us an "off feeling" about them. The worst thing that can happen is that we were wrong and we'll need to apologize - but at least we will be alive and unharmed to do so.

There's this weird spinning off on this advice for women to be pushy. I mean if some guy I don't like is talking to me I look another way and appear genuinely distracted but if he approaches me in a threatening manner and he's just bigger than me I'm not about to be stupid n think being mouthy is enough....because it may only be enough to get your bell rung like an idiot🤷‍♀️ I start moving and looking for exit strategies not ways to act stupidly big n bad *ss when I'm just not.

Confirmation bias is a massive problem in nearly every professional field from law enforcement to health care to education and it needs to be addressed. This leads to a time intuition told me to remove myself from the classroom of an eventually charged and, under biased circumstances, acquitted murderer. Day one of hs bio my new teacher creeped me out. I couldn't place why but I didn't like him at all. I spent the night trying to point out what I thought was odd about him. I found him manic, leering, already knew he at minimum was in an unhappy marriage, thought his posters of women in swimsuits in class to be unprofessional at best, that he lacked self-control, and didn't respond like most people would to normal things. He didn't laugh unless he told the joke and it was always a disturbing joke about dead babies/little kids and murder. Day two he was a completely different person when it came to being calm. He still leered at me and talked about his home life but didn't joke. He in fact lost his temper when one of the boys commented he thought one of the prior jokes was funny. By now my brain is screaming to run. I told my parents I was switching classes or dropping out but I wouldn't go near him again. They didn't want to let me and I said to mark my words he will have bodies in a crawlspace if he doesn't already. Cut to the middle of the year and his wife and two small children were brutally and horrifically murdered. While he was acquitted I will never understand how but for the bias of him coming from a "good family" having access to money, and if he would speed. The evidence even included a gas receipt for the early morning when he could have been headed back to the conference he had as an alibi. Confirmation bias of the jury set him free, good 'ol boys, confirmation bias, and people still thinking if you're job is x, y cannot be possible lead the police to stop looking for suspects. Someone killed them yet once he was free no one kept looking. Google John Feeney Missouri Teacher Murder and see for yourself. BTW he was allowed to teach during the trial.

It’s so great that you are teaching teens to listen to that inner voice or ‘gut’ or intuition!

Other co workers HATED this. lol Especially in low vibrational enviornments (the small, low income city I lived in) At the time I didn't realize what was going on, I was just being me. I'm sorry if just being me outshined others. Not sorry. lol Thank you God, realized my blessings.

Often show hosts don't know how to interview. They like to hear themselves talk and think it's their show. This showhost is interviewing her guest with the intent to get information from her guest that will help others. That is exactly why she is a good interviewer and a good host. Guests don't want to be on a show where they can't share the information they were invited to share.

To any men or women who care about men that see this and feel a little down because it seems everyone thinks that excluding men from people who should be empowered, or given aid, or shown empathy towards, know that it isn't everyone. I for one favor the idea of caring about, empathizing with, and providing aid to men as well, and recognize that excluding them from these things is a form of discrimination, and that it isn't fair or right.

Melvin Lombard They also distant themselves, speak from a 3rd person perspective and sometimes offer way too much info and seemingly just ramble on (when details are completely unnecessary). For example: Q = Did you eat? A = Pizza, thin crust with pepperoni, extra cheese and a robust sauce. It took a long long long time to get they were super busy, but the waitress a girl named Jessica, was really friendly and apologized for the wait. Did I mention it was thin crust? It was incredibly delicious, we really should go there together sometime. I can’t remember the name of the place, but it was pretty good... and not really that busy. So how was your day? (Notice the over the top response and inconsistencies)

@@GhostSal I completely agree, they projectile vomit information that's not relevant, they have no conscience of what's right or wrong, they just go on and on... like I've officially had it with these people. Parents and family sometimes believe they have a free pass for twisting the facts to suit their narrative. I can still tolerate people who lie casually because it's clearly got to do with themselves and their reality, but people who lie to cause malicious damage to someone's character are trash, they are so far detached from reality that they lie so skillfully and convincingly. As they carry on with their deceitfulness you can see their minds working, the incessant talking, vagueness of whatever BS they are concocting as they go along, unoriginal and usually a projection or regurgitation of their own insecurities, twisting the true version of events. I mean if you're going to lie, atleast make it original, and don't you dare point them out a contradictory statement made previously, they'll tell you you're the lier. I'm dealing with this psycho and who I personally believe is not mentally well 🙄
