@ Alejandro Ayora: "My heart just breaks everytime I see a bubba'd Cetme or G3" As a firearm collector, I'd love to run across a vintage iron-sighted wood-stocked CETME clone (true CETME rifles which are select fire are heavily-regulated and require a special permit, and are also quite expensive), but the only people making them for the USA are Century Arms, and those rifles - while attractive to look at - are famous for not being able to shoot point-of-aim to point-of-impact. They can't be zeroed due to barrel mistiming or other issues related to the sights. They also require a special front sight tool which is not always easy to find. And wood-stocked G3s are hard to find. PTR Industries of South Carolina make a nice G3 clone, but quit making wood furniture rifles a while back and haven't done any since.

I have the secret to accurizing a PTR. Spanish foregrips. Hear me out. The achilles' heel of the system is the pencil barrel. It's not inherently bad, but it does make it highly susceptible to heat and pressure. Use a loose and sloppy CETME handgrip, and *do not* tighten it. Just keep the screw in enough that it's not going to fall out. It should wobble. Then, shoot it off of a bag, not a bipod. If you mount a bipod to the barrel, putting pressure on it (even just the weight of the rifle) will screw up your barrel harmonics. If you put the bipod on the foregrip, preloading it forward puts strain on the *top* of the barrel. It goes without saying, use halfway decent ammunition. Any OTM type round is generally fine, but most PTR family rifles have a 1:10 barrel that benefits from using a 168gr projectile. I've seen this three times, going from a tacticool'd out Rainbow 6 build to something that looks like it came out of Fallout 3, and the grouping size goes from 3" to 0.75". It's infuriating, because I want my bipod, but until I build a custom foregrip with a mount to isolate the bipod from the barrel, it's not going to change.

I've used a TA33 3X ACOG with the Spuhr Top Rail (which sits a little higher it looks than the MFI) and I think the best I could do was getting the telescoping stock somewhere around the very bottom of my cheek, if I played around with it enough. I guess if I absolutely had to, I could make it work, but I'd have trouble trying to do it consistently. That's just me though. The HK bipod looks cool, but it makes the otherwise very comfortable wide handguard rather uncomfortable when it's folded, and it's really heavy. thanks to the adjustability of your headspace and bolt gap with some work on the rollers and considering most are freefloated you can *make* them very mechanically accurate by bringing the gap in. But most manufacturers are not going to send out rifles with such tight gaps as that effects function with ammo that might not be to M80 ball specs. That being said with not very much cash in parts (we are talking sub 50 bucks) you can easilly tighten the groups into the 1 ish MOA range. @GeorgiaBoy19613 жыл бұрын
@ Mattias Petrmichl: PTR 91's are made from old surplus blueprints and machining from the Austrian firm of Steyr - which used to make them for the government of that nation - so they're accurate facsimiles. The OEM triggers are lousy, so if you have ambitions to shoot accurately you usually need an after-market trigger or a trigger-job, since they're 10-12 lbs. factory with tons of creep and over-travel. The barrels are supposed to be quite accurate, but the heavy and large bolt-assembly reciprocating can degrade accuracy for some users, so a buffer update is also common. 2-3 moa doesn't sound like much now, but as recently as the 1960s, those were the specs for service rifle accuracy. If the standard military silhouette is 18-inches wide, and the iron sights on the G3 are good to 500 meters, then 3 moa gets you there still on center-mass. The sights are graduated to 400 meters, but if memory serves, recruits are taught to hold over to reach 500 and even 600 meters using irons alone. The rifle is accurate-enough; the real issue is how good is that NATO-spec. M80 Ball you're using. If it is good quality and capable of better than 3 moa, chances are you'll be OK even with iron sights. True precision shooting -like a DMR - is another matter all together.

Many builds (including my own) include an overmolded HK21-style charging handle that, in my case, saves my frostbitten fingers. I also have a vertical grip, but after figuring out what works for me the best, I ended up having a very short one from Strike Industries, because I tend to never actually grip around it but rather use it as an oversized hand stop. Also, having two QD mounting points (one - where the original one goes and another - much closer to the receiver) gives much more carrying flexibility with only a few grams of weight added.

All G3's and clones are free floated inherent to the design. 2-3 MOA is pretty normal. It should be noted that, until AR's started becoming free floated more regularly, 2-3 MOA from a G3 was typically better. Mil M4/M16 standard is 4.5/4 MOA respectively. Not to say accuracy isn't important, but I think most people are overly concerned with MOA accuracy, especially when most shooters are not MOA accurate. 2-3 MOA for a combat rifle is plenty adequate.
@themischeifguide Жыл бұрын
People tend to get overly concerned about a lot of stuff, but yeah 2-3 is good enough. Considering typical engagement distances even back to the Civil War through WW2 and up to now, I'd be happy with a rifle that can make good hits at 200-300 meters. There are exceptions sure but mostly 200 meters and closer. I never thought my M16A2 or M4 were inaccurate, I thought they shot really well.

To me 400 yards is plenty good enough for most people. If people can train past 400 yards, God bless them, but many don't even have access consistently to ranges that go past about 200 yards.

@@ch4osaeternum74 I know what you mean. For a long time I was lucky to have a range that goes out to 200 yards, it's only recently I found a range that will go out to 400. We all have to make do with what we have.

I basically went the DMR route with mine. Switched to a HK-21 stock (with wide rubber pad) and wideguard and modded a oversized charging handle to work with the wideguard. The stock has a nice little spot to grip while using the bipod to help keep everything nice and stable. Works relly well for where I live, but there are days I wish I had gone for a DSA FAL instead.

I've actually been issued an G3A4 in the military that looks close to what the gun on 3:21 looks like without the rail and aimpoint but I am 100% sure that all the "rail upgraded G3A4s" look exactly like that one without the bipod with the same type of raised aim point. Keep in mind for some reason if u are serving ur mandatory military service and get issued an A4 instead of the A3 "because you are a squad leader as per usual if you go through Corporal training" they don't give you a bipod or bayonet like on the A3 but you still use the bipod mount hand guard... Its weird I know xD

It's not an H&K standard, without the buffer tube in the buttstock, which the STG44 had. It greatly effects the handling without it, making 7.62x51mm uncontrollable.

I've got one in 7.62.39. Spur stock, extended charging handle, and a 3x Sig Brovo. It's a LITTLE lighter than the .308 and shoots awesome. It's still got the factory hand guard, whih kinda sucks. That is the next thing I want to chagne out. For the price and features.....I like it a lot more than a Mini-30.

I would hesitate at calling a plain-jane full size PTR a “toy”, good only for the range. Some people can only afford a simple rifle for their mission (whatever that may be). Your comment is about on par with the recent MOH person who dissed people who wear tactical gear, like they’re not worthy of it. Just a thought.
@Hoplopfheil3 жыл бұрын
A full size PTR is way too expensive for a simple rifle. If you're stuck with one already that's fine, but nobody should go looking for one to fullfil a practical role.

Objectively talking about the practical usefulness of a particular firearms design features is helpful for those evaluating purchase decisions.
@ImNoBSING3 жыл бұрын
Well it is true that the PTR with the MR223 stock is not the best solution, but high rear stock is not necessary at all to get good groups / submoa accuracy. A flat stock also lets you switch between scope and red dot. The most important thing is to get any solid support point from the stock, and supporting chin to it works really well. I mean, no problem at all. On the contrary, it lets you use the optic from more difficult positions and uneven ground. But setting parallax and edge-to-edge scope image become more important (like they are not already)

I think the scope with the huge bell had the sunshade attached. Not sure whether it would clear if you removed it though, I'm not familiar with the architecture of the rifle.
@Hoplopfheil3 жыл бұрын
The bell of the scope overhangs the charging handle notch by a bit too. It's best to get it at least an inch or so behind that to get enough clearance for bolt manipulations.
