The highlight of the season for me was Frank telling Karen how he couldn't hear his kids' laughter any more. Completely heartbreaking but such a great and deep character moment. The action's good, the acting's good, the story's good, but it's stuff like that that keeps me coming back to these shows.

I think the details where Billy made Frank thought he killed 3 innocent girls was great. But then it turned out pointless by having Karen and Madani find out that Billy was the one that killed them beforehand. The point of moral struggle was cut short. Would have been a lot better if they let Frank accidentally killed them as he originally thought.

I genuinely think this season would have been perfect if they had merged the two over-arching storylines together. It would have made sense as Jigsaw & Pilgrim had a common enemy in Frank Castle. Apart from that though, this season was much more fast-paced than S1 and included more emotional stakes. Also liked Amy's character a lot more than Micro. It's brilliant for the most part and much better than the first season. Don't understand the mixed reviews it's getting at all. Side-note: think people need to actually appreciate character development in shows like this instead of claiming it's boring or uninteresting. Without all of the intimate character moments established in the middle section of the show you wouldn't care about the climax in the final four episodes. You wouldn't care about Billy Russo's relationship with Krista or care about Pilgrim's family. It doesn't all have to be break-necked fast paced action.
@Domination1799

nlg070301 That all depends if the character development is good. Billy and the doctors storyline was the most painful one to watch because of how redundant it became. I know they wanted to make jigsaw more sympathetic but it just didn’t work because that storyline came off as a cheap knock off of Harley Quinn and the Joker.

One of the 'rotten reviews' reads: "Netflix's 'The Punisher' season two is a bloody reminder that in Frank Castle's world, guns are a superpower Marvel's Punisher doesn't have super skin, or seismic strength. What he does have would make the NRA smile." This is not a review, it's a political rant - the person is simply annoyed that this fictional character exists. It shouldn't have been included as a serious review of the show. Season one was similarly underrated because some people were annoyed that the show didn't portray the political stance they think it 'should' have portrayed. Fucking people like that are ruining the credibility of 'professional' reviewers.

I thought that Season 2 was slightly underwhelming and not as good as the first. There were too many storylines that never seemed to fully intersect and that made it feel messy and incomplete. I very much greatly preferred the Pilgrim storyline over the Russo storyline, as Jigsaw was very disappointing, being reduced to an emotionally unstable street thug dressed like he is in The Purge. I wish the whole season was the Pilgrim/Amy storyline outside of New York, and felt that it was way underdeveloped because the focus shifted to the Russo storyline. It should have been around 8 or 10 episodes as it did lag in the middle quite a bit, but I liked that Curtis became more of a main character and Madani (who I didnt care much about in the first season) became more likeable to me. The action, however, and Bernthal's performance were amazing as always, especially the gym fight scene. Overall, maybe a 6.5/10 and in the upper-middle of total Netflix Marvel seasons.

I was underwhelmed by the main villains and threat they posed. And their motive was lame. Seriously Ma Kent doesn’t want anyone to know her son is gay? Frank is the Punisher. Shouldn’t he be fighting domestic terrorists or something?
@nlg070301
@nlg070301 5 жыл бұрын
I think they wanted their son to run for office. If people found out he was gay that would absolutely destroy his chances of getting into the position they wanted him to be at. Thus, they hired Pilgrim to assassinate Amy who had the photos. It's quite a relevant plot for today's society actually.
@Domination1799
@Domination1799 5 жыл бұрын
nlg070301 Not really because being gay is not even that big of a deal today. I can understand if it was like in the early 2000s but in today’s society it’s not too big of a deal. They should of had the parents send John after Amy because they run a slave operation and she is one of their runaways. This is how they could’ve adapted the slavers arc from the comics.
@robcampion9917
@robcampion9917 5 жыл бұрын
@@Domination1799 The reason why the parents did was because they were religious zealots for want of a better word and wanted to protect their own image more than their sons, I also think they more or less had Pilgrim's family hostage in two was because they knew who he used to be and I think they were paying for his wife's treatment.

Rob Campion I knew they were religious zealots but they were so underdeveloped as characters. I know they cared more about their reputation then their son but still I thought the photos were gonna contain something way more worse than what it turned out to be. Once again, great video Sean ! Hearing your thoughts on this, I can completely see your points. I enjoyed the first season a bit more, though I still loved this one. I did feel like the plot was going nowhere sometimes but the acting and the going into the characters' minds stuff was so good to me that I didn't mind too much. What I loved most is that even though I absolutely love Frank and wanted him to get done with Russo and all I actually couldn't help but feel sorry for Russo and kind of root for him, like wanting him to be happy. After all the shit he's done I think the writers are genius for making the audience able to feel that. My biggest disappointment is that they didn't give much time to the Frank and Karen relationship. Whether you like them or not they have a very particular relationship and I wish they would have explored it a bit more. As you said, they had plenty of time to do more stuff. That one episode in which she was felt forced to me.

As a fan of Frank Castle as a character and of film making in general, I'd say this season was good but not as good as the first. Frank had a lot more of an arc in season 1. For me personally, the show was at it's most good when Frank was dealing with the memories of his past and the fact that his family was dead. This season picks up with Frank trying to move on, but is called back into the shit because of this one girl he happened to meet. This season's objective was to make Netflix Frank Castle more like comic book Punisher. Which sort of undoes the progress he had as a character of season 1. Shit kinda just happens to Frank rather than because of him (aside of Billy Russo's crime spree). I was brainstorming and I came up with an alternate version of season 2: Billy Russo's brain trauma emphasizes his sadistic and selfish side and builds up a very crooked gang like how the show already does. This gang targets Frank but not just him but everyone he's ever worked with too, Madonni, Karen Page, Micro, his new friend Beth, and even Curtis. Which forces Frank to dawn the skull vest again and put an end to the last remnant of what was his former life, Billy. This teaches him that crime is relentless and evil will prevail unless evil is killed. So *THIS* is what teaches Frank to become the Punisher permanently. And the 3rd season (if Netflix wasn't cancelling all of their shows) would be about Madonni trying to catch Frank and stop his war on crime.

Agree that the John Pilgrim and cub/bear pairing of the girl with Frank was great. The last episode was a ton of fun, but every time Billy and his girl Quinn were on screen I was falling asleep as it went nowhere and had no real philosophy guiding the plot. Final note, the makeup on Frank got progressively worse as they stopped even trying to make him look injured and Jigsaw makeup was absolutely shit from the getgo. Loved all of the performances except the psychologist and rando stalker cop, but they didn't have much to work with so no blame on them.

I can remember every episode of Season 1, plot-lines, characters, action sequences, and gut punches. I can’t say the same for this season (just like he said)... The middle 3 episodes were tedious. Spoilers (kind of)... I mean they could’ve had Billy plotting a way to get the bounty on Frank without realizing who Frank was to him (interesting). They could’ve done a Kandahar-type one shot sequence where Frank set up the bounty-seekers in a trap to send a message. They could’ve told how John Pilgrim became the born again killer for the Schultz’s in much the same way that Poindexter had a flashback episode in DD s3. Now that would’ve given more gravity not only to his restaurant fight scene confronting his past and losing faith, but also his recognizable desperation to get his sons back. They could’ve given Amy a backstory episode that would’ve allowed people (like me) who were annoyed by her a chance to understand her character better. So much missed potential. And a frustrated ellipses on the Frank and Karen relationship from DDs2 and Punisher s1 (grr Amy).

For me, I really like how The Punishers actor (Jon Bernthal) captures a lot of the little things Marines do after their service, maybe military overall too. He would say proper greetings, use sir or ma'am, the saying "People here I wouldnt piss on to put them out but in combat Id take a bullet for.", little things like that where it feels they really looked into that aspect so its there.

I must say, the strong points of this season is why I appreciated this season:-) it was simply relentless when it came to it's character development and interaction as well as well crafted choreography when it came to it's hard R rating of fight and gun fun action sequences!!! I cringed at how graphic and violent each altercation insued!! Such in depth and damaged were our main characters handled& displayed with only officer Mahoney,who offered some sort of moral compass,gave a sign of relief in this mash of grief& desperation,our main characters development and interaction created conflict with resolution,crime drama done superbly,which may have been a problem with some but kept me entertained!! I only had a few issues with this season as far the actor who portray Billy Russo,he just wasn't convincing enough for me even though his character was well developed,using amnesia in such a intriguing sort of way. As for the actress who portrayed russo's qack doctor,her comupents just did satisfy,she chose her fate and the consequence should have been more savere& believable& the same can be said for josh Stewart's extremely convincing& eye popping performance yet his conclusion was not of his actions chose,he lived by the gun,though he ran from it which was apart of past& determined his future which was not very satisfying in my humble opinion!!! With that being said,I could see how some would be turned off by all the sub plots which can effect pace& tone but for me,I was pleased :-) I enjoy how much can be explained and added with time& by this series being flushed out in 13 episodes,it's well worth the investment. Definitely Punisher interpreted at it's gory finest,everything I expected when not so patiently waiting for this much anticipated season 2 :-)

Good video as always Sean! I had a lot more problems with this season than season 1. Too many episodes, too many plot lines, and an anti-climactic ending especially with Billy/Jigsaw’s death. I did really enjoy a lot of it though. The performances by everyone were great, especially Jon Bernthal and Ben Barnes and it had easily some of the best action scenes of all the Marvel Netflix seasons. I give it a 7/10.

I understand your criticisms, and respect them, but for me I felt reversed on your thoughts my favorite parts of this season was watching Billy Russo and his story, and his reveal with frank and how he reacted to that, I absolutely couldn’t stay still over it, it was so exciting to see almost a role reversal with frank and Russo compared to them in season 1, and I loved the John Pilgrim story too, but I felt like they sidelined him for far too long that by the time they started bringing him back into the story halfway through I almost didn’t care about what was happening with that cause it felt like it wasn’t as important and compelling, but then when we start to learn more about John I did feel like his story and being against frank started to get more interesting and got my attention again. Pretty much I loved this whole season mostly probably because of the incredible scenes with frank, Curtis, John, Amy, and Billy. They had some of the best scenes of the whole series when you got to watch them work, talk, and show real emotion.

Not one for leaving comments but, my view on episodes 4-9 is the focus was also about the character developments, relationships and impacts of each other's actions on each characters so that the events in following episodes felt elevated because you knew everyone's intentions / reasons resulting in a bigger emotional response. Also his goodbye to someone who was with him the whole season felt pure in that he didn't respond to the situation as a "normal" person and in that moment I felt for him because you can see his inner struggle and pain in accepting his ability to look passed "punishing" due to his inability to find the right words. My opinion and I understand it's open to criticism but would welcome any thoughts on this.

I agree with you about most of it. It got so boring in the middle, people just pairing off and talking about their traumas and feeling ways about stuff. so boring. The fascination with this character is Frank's withdraw from his humanity after his family is slaughtered. Frank being just a normal schmo palling around with an obnoxious teenager just doesn't do it for me. it's not the Punisher. They spent two full episodes just sitting in an apartment chatting. There's plenty of quality source material in the comics, they didn't have to waste a single scene much less 5 or 6 episodes. This could've been a dark, contemplative tour de force but instead it was Grey's Anatomy with some violent scenes occasionally. What a wasted opportunity. They're making a show about a man who turns into a psychopathic killing machine, stop trying to please everybody. it's not for everybody.

This season was a 6-7/10 only because of the Jigsaw storyline. I thought that it was decent, but mostly boring. I feel like if they kept Jigsaw more true to the comics, his storyline would have been better. The Pilgrim storyline was near perfect every time it was the main focus. I would even go to say that Pilgrim as a villain is up there with Fisk, Kilgrave, and Cottonmouth.

I think this was a pretty damn fair review. I know I'll get a lot of fire for this but most aspects of Billy were a huge letdown for me. Don't get me wrong, I understand the lack of scars made up for with the psychological aspect, but part of it felt like a cop out. His face looked fine. Hell, the guy still looks attractive. But when he takes his mask off in front of Curtis in the parking garage, Curtis has 2 huge scars on his face and his reaction to a guy with maybe 3 more scars than him... I mean, this Russo didn't feel like "Jigsaw" to me. The S1 finale, the bandages, the mask... too much led me to expect a seriously mangled face.

Billy was such a let down, it was hard to watch the show with him on screen because every scene with him was just ahh I'm broken and I don't know what I am and who to hurt but ahh I'm really really evil but am I really? the therapist was kinda just put there. Like Madani's obsession with Zubair in season 1 it was just put there. Same troupe of I care because its my character, their drive was relentless for "reasons". I get they wanted Billy to be broken and all but at the end of the day his character was just written poorly and put together to be unstable for the sake of the villain being easy to route against but also show some deeper side of the character because why not. Disappointing season

Andy N I totally agree. His storyline was the weakest and his character eventually became annoying after he keeps blabbing on about not remembering what happened to him. Once he finds out he just brushes that aside and doesn’t believe that he’s capable of doing those things. This whole season, Billy’s arc was just regaining his memory and trying to break frank with a really moronic plan. They should of made Billy come back with a vengeance instead of making him feel like just an angry ex military buddy of Franks that had to be put down.
@FMD023

You guys obviously didn’t see what the writers was trying to do. They did a great job imo. To the point you felt a bit of sorrow for Russo. Russo’s arc was rushed and should have been saved for season 3 but them having him in season 2 just means that they are uncertain about season 3 with the Disney + and Netflix issue going on. It wasn’t as good as season 1 but the 2nd half of season 2 picked up for the slow start.

Fred Dukeduong They we’re trying to focus on the psychological aspect of the character. I know they were making the jigsaw happen inside his head instead of his face looking like a jigsaw. It’s a very good idea on a paper but the way they executed the idea was just poor. They shouldn’t have had that doctor character. Billy also just wasn’t that intimidating and he didn’t really feel like a villain. He was more of a lost puppy more than anything.
@FMD023
@FMD023 5 жыл бұрын
Dominik Santiago that was the point the writers was trying to get across. When maidina and frank found out Russo broke out they were ready to take him down. Once frank saw him and vice versa he instantly knew that he wasn’t lying and that he didn’t remember what he did to frank. Just remembers that frank was his best friend. It just happens that Russo as a person is the same guy who doesn’t care bout anyone but himself. Everyone has their own opinion. I felt it was too early to introduce Russo’s arc this season and it started off slow. But what can you do when they don’t know if there will even be a season3. I was please with the 2nd half of it. I’m glad they went that route. You got to see action and you got to see the sorrow and soft side of the punisher this season.The storyline as a whole was whatever but still enjoyable
@nplindgren
@nplindgren 5 жыл бұрын
My issue was that the two plot lines were independent of each other do they took away focus from each other. This led to stretched out episodes, particularly the ones with Billy. I was certain that somehow they would merge into one overarching storyline, but they never did. Regardless, I enjoyed the season and would instantly watch a season 3.
