Modesty is fantastic! “Modest is hottest” as a slogan is problematic because it fundamentally has conflicting messages. Ultimately we want to tell girls (let’s be honest, that’s usually the focus of modesty) that the are worth SO much more than how they look…but here’s how to look hot. The phrase loses the nuances of modesty and boils modesty down to something “marketable” and loses a lot of the importance of the concept.

Well put, Carin! I'd like to see the church move away from focusing on women's bodies and appearances. I know Matthew West is a good guy and it's just meant to be a silly song but I'd like my daughter and young people in general to grow up with the notion that their bodies are good because they're made by God, instead of mirroring the world's ideas and focusing on what women are wearing. Jess Connolly wrote an excellent book that explores the attitudes of the world and modern church related to this called Breaking Free from Body Shame. It really got me thinking about how the lies of our culture creep into our understanding of the Bible.

My husband told me about that Matthew West song and I love it! It’s a shame how people are treating him regarding it. It isn’t a song to put women down and say they are responsible for whatever happens to them but it’s a funny way for a parent to remind their daughter their value isn’t in showing off their body but in who they are. What parent would tell their daughter to wear the shortest dress or lowest cut shirt anyways? Sorry for the rant 😆 But it is a great funny song 😁 “What the boys really love is a turtleneck and a sensible pair of slacks”. love this line, such a funny song😂

I come from a very conservative background and the church is under attack for anything it says or if the people have an opinion. I stopped the video to look up the song and the backlash- wow. Ouch, also some people do need to lighten up but I could also see the harm how some people did take it out of context. My Dad, was never the one to put the rules down on dressing for me it was my Mom. She taught me to be a lady from the inside out. She would say, “someone can strip you of everything but they cannot take what’s inside your head, heart and soul. God is with you, always and his love reaches the darkest corners of the earth to find you if you ever walk away.” My father would teach us, “Always speak the truth in love whether it’s about your friend stealing an eraser or you’re (politely) informing someone you dislike their homemade dish (if asked).” Essentially, with Gods love the heart can relay the message of kindness from the hard matters of life to the easier stuff. Yes, we all do have opinions. We all come from different backgrounds. It’s what makes us individuals with free choice given to us at birth. Thank you for the uplifting word and for standing for truth even when it isn’t popular. Also, again Thanks to the Farmhouse Mama of you ladies for sharing her progress! 🥳💖 Blessings to your week!!

The video/song that Matthew West put out totally made me cringe. There are a lot of women who were really hurt by the purity message from the church. Including me. The message that women are accountable for men’s lust/sin. I do agree that dressing myself with respect is important, but we also need to acknowledge that the modesty passages in the Bible are talking about those who flaunt their wealth. Telling young girls to cover up so men won’t sin is a burden that they shouldn’t have to bare. Teach your boys that their thoughts are their responsibility and they are the only ones who will be held accountable for their lust.

The bible also tells us that we should he careful if causing others to stumble (the millstone around the neck....). We cover up and dress modestly out of respect for our holy bodies. As a modest, sensible, prudent, kinda-wise, mature, Christian woman (according to me, anyway. But like Diana, I am learning that I'm not always right), the Matthew West song is truly unnecessary and stupid. When I first heard it, I had no indication that it was meant to be satirical. My 13yo daughter was in the car, so I changed the channel after the awful chorus. But, I wish she hadn't even heard that much! Stop shaming girls for becoming women! Imagine a song telling boys that they can lift weights, but only if they agree wear long sleeves and never flex. The time crunch only gets worse when the baby comes! They don't sleep. Dawn has said before that organized people with too much inventory call themselves "lazy" when they see the mess build up. How would this is just a syptom of too much. Consider that you may need to downsize and simplify. Mom of a newborn doesn't ha e any more time to clean and organize than pregnant. And when baby naps, so should you! Because you'll have to be awake when baby is awake.

I’ve found modesty actually makes me more comfortable and confident. I’m never self conscious when I’m reasonably covered. Which allows me to focus on others and not myself more. Certainly we are not responsible for other’s hearts, but when we truly love our brothers (men) we will not want to be a stumbling block to them in any way.
@anitas58173 жыл бұрын
I agree on modesty. And non- flashy clothes. And I’m not religious at all so it’s not a part of my religion or my culture or anything. And it doesn’t have to do with men at all - their feelings are their responsibility. I just don’t want to be thinking about people’s reaction to how I look as I’m going about my average day.
@jeanettehansen48523 жыл бұрын
I used to think this way, too. The problem with it is that you can't control what other people wear or don't wear. To make your thoughts and actions be about another person is avoiding personal responsibility. Modesty needs to be in your own mind and actions; not in what other people are wearing/doing.

@@jeanettehansen4852 Exactly!! If you want to dress in ways that follow your personal interpretation and standard of modesty, by all means knock yourself out! I'm here for it! I love how you said we need to be responsible for our own thoughts and actions. So much focus is on what people (especially women) wear because people who are attracted to them would rather blame them instead of taking responsibility for their own thoughts and actions. Hey Dawn! I love these spiritual Sunday videos :) I thought I'd share a perspective I was recently exposed to about the phrase "modest is hottest" that you might find interesting. When many people say modest is hottest, what they mean is that you don't need to conform to societal norms to be beautiful or desirable. I think we are on the same page here, I love that sentiment! A deeper level of this that was exposed to, is that the phrase is still promoting the fundamental ideology that your body's purpose is to be desirable to others. I know this isn't usually the intent of the phrase, but I was enlightened by that perspective and thought you might be as well :)

Please let your Mom know how many of us are inspired by her pantry change, and the idea that we can do it too! Blessings on her for sharing it with the world, and it was the best way for us to see how to transfer it to our own situations.

Modest is hottest. I can't believe I've never heard that phrase before! Love it. I need to have a pantry organizing party. I just moved and have never had a pantry this big before. It's such a mess right now. Thank you for the inspiration. And thank you to Diana for sharing God's word. Continued blessings to you and your family!

Truth is truth, but we are not the Holy Spirit. We cannot argue people into the kingdom. That’s what only the Holy Spirit does. We pray. We witness. We love.

I just wanted to add to the conversation about “modest is hottest”. Here’s a direct quote from beauty redefined (I follow them on Instagram). “We should see more than bodies in our girls and encourage them to be more by teaching them how to understand and seek their value outside of their appearance and sexual appeal.” Here’s another section from the same article: “Teach your girls about self-objectification. Talk to them about how being fixated on your clothes and your appearance gets in the way of everything they could be doing and experiencing. What if we prioritized how girls and women feel in their own bodies and clothing, rather than how they think they look? What if we taught girls to be conscious and critical of the ways we’ve been taught to view and value ourselves as objects to be looked at, and to fight to see more and be more? What if we helped girls and women consciously consider the ways their clothing affects their self-perceptions and self-consciousness rather than the way others might or might not perceive them? What if we spoke from research and truth that empowers girls and women and encourages respect for our bodies, instead of speaking from a place of fear and anxiety that reinforces the lie that girls are sexual beings first and human beings second? We owe it to our girls to try. “ Thoughts?

I've never emptied my entire kitchen or pantry to organize, it would overwhelm me. What I do is after I clean the kitchen in the evening I empty, wipe out, declutter, and reload one shelf or one drawer in my kitchen and/or pantry. It takes me about three months to go through everything, and then I start over again. Because I do this consistently I can skip a drawer or shelf during my rotations because it stays clean and organized.

Great idea for those of us who get overwhelmed thinking about tackling the whole kitchen! I recently cleaned out my cookie sheet/cooling rack cabinet and lined the bottom with shelf liner. I kind of forgot about it and when I went to put something away it was such a nice surprise to see it al nice and cute. It made me want to do more!

I entirely agree with you about modest is hottest. The one thing I read made sense to me but I have always taken it as a sort of joking way of saying something along the lines of it’s an attractive quality to be a modest woman however I can see this point of view. recording artist Audrey Assad was one of West’s staunchest critics. In a post of her own, she said the phrase “‘modest is hottest’ still entirely centers men and their preferences in the way a woman should dress, sets up being ‘hot’ as the goal for women, and positions all men as creeps who can’t handle seeing a woman’s skin without becoming out of control monsters.”

Thank you for the glimpse of serenity, whether in a pantry space (GREAT JOB) or from the perspective that we have a chance to hear others when we listen rather than arguing or trying to "win". The real win is to create room for serenity, and that is where I now love to be.

I love the way you talk about this. We are not here to judge others. "Judge not or be Judged" So much truth in that. I love all MM but Sudays fill my hear!!!

Thanks always for this. Today I’m thrilled to be able to listen to this message in my counter-decluttered kitchen drinking coffee. I’m able to focus and breathe, no messes in front of me (at least in the kitchen). However I want to know where you store the tomatoes? Went to grocery on Fridayand actually put away groceries but didn’t know where to put tomatoes - so I ate them!

After 2 weeks of putting into action all the tips and advice on your channel, today my family arrived for a birthday party after church and my mom asked if we were moving (cause there weren’t things everywhere) and my dad said he’s never seen our home so clean/decluttered! It was also so stress free to tidy the house before church in preparation for everyone showing up straight from church! Oh we also had your chicken tacos and chocolate cookie bar recipes! 😂😂
@jenniferjapak38883 жыл бұрын
Everyone loved the chicken tacos and my kids asked for the cookie bars to be made again for dessert on Sundays from now on! Ohh and clean up was a breeze cause everything had a place to go and everything was sparkling and put away in 20 mins!

Thank you for sharing this project! I’ve been talking non-stop about how amazing I feel now that I’ve made so much progress in my own home. I was inspired after the pantry video to offer my help to my mother and my four sisters now, and they are all SO excited already at the thought of getting their spaces decluttered and functional. That help can really be so valuable - you helped me, now I can help them. ❤️ Thank you so much!!!

I'm an atheist who watches a lot of your videos and I love your channel, but I wanted to point out that people who don't believe in God take "I'm praying for you" in a different way than how you probably mean it. Many people see it as condescending. I know you're not necessarily responsible for how someone interprets what you say,, just pointing it out in case they don't appreciate it and you're not sure why.
