Apparently it's derived from an in-joke they had at the time, where they'd come up with various neologisms centered around the word "shabby", such as "shabbitude" for the state of being shabby or "shabbitations" for shabby places. "Protecting children from Nazi imagery" has probably had the opposite effect. The part of Australia in which I grew up, schools avoided any mention of the events and ideologies around WW2 until we were 16. not everyone stayed in school that long, and even then, WW2 only came up in an _elective_ subject, modern history. This wasn't about keeping us away from war, no, we hear about WW1, particularly Gallipoli, every year from the age of 5. Up to the age of 16, my only knowledge of WW2 was that the Germans had way cooler guns, tanks, and aircraft. The town I grew up in is _full_ of Nazis now. I'm not being hyperbolic, here (maybe with the word "full", since it's not literally everyone, but not with the "Nazis"). I don't mean fiscal conservatives who also hate the gays. I mean there's plenty of folks with Iron Cross and Valknut tattoos when they think they're being clever, and SS tattoos when they lack even that much imagination. Most people can't tell the difference between a random skull and cross-bones and the Totenkopf unit insignia, but to the keen eye, there's plenty of those tattoos there, too. My point is, you shelter kids from the _realities_ of WW2, and you just make a new generation of Nazis. They turn to the History Channel for their education, and all you see there is "NEXT ON NAZI SUPER-WEAPONS!" and episodes of Ancient Aliens that work very hard to reinforce the idea that brown people couldn't possibly have built impressive things so it MUST have been aliens. Maybe if we'd taught kids in the 80s and 90s why they were shooting Nazis we wouldn't have the Nazis back, now. I've mentioned the Bad Thing and the Bad People several times in this comment, so I'll be surprised if KZbin lets it see the light of day.

Speaking of physical merch, the Wolfenstein miniatures/boardgame use a combination of the uncensored story with the recent Bethesda censored aesthetics. So Mecha Hitler is there, but also all the swastikas and iron crosses have been replaced with the triangle symbol from the German New Colosssus. Which I really don’t mind because I kind of don’t want to spend my hobby time painting a bunch of swastikas on my toy soldiers. Pretty sure the eagle graphics replacement in New Order is the old dramatic chipmunk meme! Pretty cool that you got Burger Becky on! Absolute legend!
@GermanPeter Жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, the board game! I saw that, but it's not out yet. Definitely will have to get my hands on it, I love the new re-imaginations of the characters. And I can see the dramatic chipmunk in there, but it doesn't explain the tail. OH! Maybe it's a reference to the mutant rats from the SNES port??? I gotta find someone who worked on the game and ask them.
@ShallowVA Жыл бұрын
@@GermanPeter The board game is out! At least I have a copy, although I backed it on kickstarter... maybe it's not in retail yet. In any case, it makes sense to go for a single design since it's pretty expensive to have a whole separate production process for a censored version. It's one thing to do that for a videogame, but with physical goods like injection-molded plastic and rule books, that's an enormous hurdle. And even though Wolfenstein games are okay now, I have no idea how Germany feels about Nazi imagery in toys, collectibles, and boardgames. Probably not too favorable! For the most part the characters use MachineGames era designs that were already created for those games, but they created brand new designs for some of the series' older characters like Hans Grosse and Fettgesicht so they would match. Pretty cool!
@GermanPeter Жыл бұрын
@@ShallowVA I'm completely fine with the missing Nazi imagery, because it makes it a bit less iffy for me to actually collect these figurines. Guess I am also fine with having a Hitle- I mean Staatmeister figurine then :D Gotta get my hands on it for sure! Just wish they didn't use the triangle symbol, I'd have much preferred the older Wolfenstein logo that they used in RTCW and Wolfenstein 2009. The triangle just seems lame to me.
@ShallowVA Жыл бұрын
@@GermanPeter For sure, I really don't need Nazi symbols on my toys, and the miniatures hobby has enough problems with right-wing weirdos as it is without the perceived encouragement. Personally, I like the triangle as an in-universe symbol for the Fascists Who Shall Not Be Named. In RTCW they look like they're advertising the very game that they are in! I guess it would make sense for guards at Castle Wolfenstein itself to have the winged W symbol, like maybe that's their thing, but Wolfenstein isn't really that important to the faction as a whole. I've been kind of hoping they eventually bring back Staatmeister as his own character! The series is definitely goofy enough for something like that to happen.

Fun fact: To censor the wolfenstien levels in doom 2 some ports straight up remove the map. In doing so using the cheat IDCLEV 31 or IDCLEV 32 in those versions crash the game because the levels still exist in code but the maps have been removed, thus the game tries to load the maps but since there are no maps the game doesn't know what to do and crashes.

If I had to make a guess why some versions of the game give the standard guards green uniforms, it might have to do with the brown uniforms representing the SA (essentially a precursor to the SS) Dressing them in green makes them look more like normal Wehrmacht soldiers and helps with censorship

i allways assumed the brown uniforms were supposed to be afrika korps for some unknown reason
@asteroidrules Жыл бұрын
@@arekkrol9758 Afrikakorps did use brown uniforms, and the SA were mostly dead before the war began so the former are more likely to be known.

The SA was absorbed into the Wehrmacht before the war started, after the Nazis purged the SA leaders (night of the long knives). Also the Wehrmacht used field grey uniforms (like in WW1), the only green uniforms pre 1945 I can think of are imperial Russian uniforms in WW1. The SS had some camouflage with green spots ( the precursor to modern Flecktarn Camouflage used by some western countries today) at the very end of WW2.

For whenever you inevitable make a video about the modern games: I think it's worth noting that the indie game "Through The Darkest of Times" from Paintbucket Games was the first game to ever receive an USK rating for a gamescom demo including swastikas. They were arguing that videogames can be a form of art, and were allowed by the USK. Which led to Wolfenstein to release in Germany with this imagery as the "International Version". The reason we still have a censored version was, that retailers like MediaMarkt and Saturn did not want to sell the uncensored version (even if it was given a proper age rating).
@blakegriplingph Жыл бұрын
From what I've read, a political satire browser game called _Bundesfighter II Turbo_ drew scrutiny when one of Alexander Gauland's moves resembled a swastika. The prosecutor's office in Stuttgart refused to investigate, citing the admission of the Bundesverband Interaktive Unterhaltungssoftware to the German Cultural Council in 2008 which officially recognised games as an art form rather than a mere toy.
@thatanimeweirdo Жыл бұрын
@@blakegriplingph Yes, however this was on a federal level (since it was political satire). The USK back then said "We have this rule in place, but if someone wants to fight it, we could probably lift it". And TTDOT was the first game (with a publisher, gamescom booth etc) that actually took that path.

This was a very interesting and informative video on the game, I am glad that the ban on Wolf 3D was lifted recently though, it's such a genre defining game that it deserves to be played by more people. Locking it to the SNES for so long has likely made it very inaccessible for a long time. Good work! You've earned yourself a new subscriber!

I thought for a very long time, that the white suited guys scream "Mein Führer!" when they die. I never heard "Nein Sowas..." before. As a German it's always funny to hear foreign speakers try the german language and sounds a bit sloppy. But in my oponion that's why Wolfenstein 3D is so legendary. Keep up the good work buddy!

I actually thought they said that too for the longest time! It makes sense, since the SS say "Mein Leben", and the officers are so much more devoted to being Nazis. Really odd.

It's worth noting that while the SNES version of Mortal Kombat had all the blood removed, the SNES version of Mortal Kombat II was nice and bloody (and also much better mechanically), because by that point the ESRB had been formed and Nintendo knew they'd lost that fight. Also a lot of Nintendo's aversion to mature content was Nintendo of America specifically, but when an American production like Mortal Kombat got compromised, a lot of the time they couldn't be bothered to re-bloody it up just for a Japanese release.

@LeoDoesAllThis Жыл бұрын
I think the funny thing is that in the prototype version of the SNES port, all the enemies and bosses that you fight say “Hey!” and Levels 2 and 3 were intended to be in their original spots. Also, Dr. Schabbs kept some of the blood on his shirt like in the original PC version before it was completely removed in the final cut. And in the SNES version, it wasn’t just Hitler who had his name changed, but also the Death Knight. Even though his original name was somehow left unchanged in the gameplay, it was slightly altered to the Black Knight, according to the game’s manual. But in the Japanese version, it has been revealed that his real name in that version is Roy Giggam, which sounds quite unique, something that I’ve never heard of before.
@GermanPeter Жыл бұрын
Oh my, I didn't even notice Schabbs' shirt was bloodless! That's incredible, and it explains why even in the Jaguar port it's completely white, since they based the sprites off of the SNES ones!
@LeoDoesAllThis Жыл бұрын
@@GermanPeter Yeah. Apparently, they’ve also done the same thing to the mutants, Trans Grosse, and the Ubermutant. In the original PC versions, they all wear green outfits, but in the SNES, Jaguar, Mac, and 3DO versions, the former two wear outfits with a darker shade of olive green, while the latter wears a brown one. I don’t know why’s that, but I can see why the creators decided to remove the blood from Schabbs’ shirt. And the Death Knight, well, in the Jaguar, Mac, and 3DO versions, they removed the targeting system that covered his left eye. Again, I’m not sure why, but still.
@GermanPeter Жыл бұрын
I think the colors of the outfits were changed because the SNES game has a different palette, or maybe it was easier to see from a distance with the pixelated screen. The Jaguar sprites are all REALLY lazily made, so I'm not surprised that the targeting system is missing. Here's a good compilation of sprites with very chunky pixels: www.spriters-resource.com/jaguar/wolfenstein3d/sheet/206205/
@LeoDoesAllThis Жыл бұрын
@@GermanPeter Hmm, interesting. Seems like they just suddenly got away with that issue. And I’m also not surprised that the enemies forgot to walk left and right in that port, unlike in the original versions, especially with the bosses not saying their last words before falling to their deaths. Also in the Japanese version, Staatmeister/Trautmann was supposedly a colonel whose plan was to resurrect the dead by using an experimental virus known as Medicine LDD4, as well as having them to take over the world. Yes, Schabbs was originally the one in charge of making that plan, but it’s still very confusing. Because the storyline says that you have to fight all the mutants, the game was given the subtitle “The Claw of Eisenfaust”. Well, we actually don’t know if that is even a character or not. And no, the game didn’t even tell us anything else about what the claw is or does, since the name “Eisenfaust” is nothing more than just a codename for the original game’s second episode.

Fun fact, I live near Raven Software and did alpha and beta testing for Wolfenstein 2009. I also grew up in Madison and lived down the road from ID Software when they lived here and were programming Wolf3d. I had no idea at the time but learned many years later as an adult. That meant we got ahold of Wolfenstein 3d on our PC probably earlier than most people in the world. It was one of the first games I remember playing on our PC as a small kid. When I was a kid I always heard Wolf3d was banned in Germany and I was very sad to hear that an entire country could not play the game because it was based on real events. So it is interesting to hear what kind of censorship you guys had in your country. We only had to worry about dumb censorship on our console games thanks to Nintendo, so the Sega genesis games having no censorship like Mortal Kombat 1 was a breath of fresh air. I had no clue there was real places in Wolf3d as a Wisconsin, USA boy. I assumed Wolfenstein was not real though. It is not, riiight? I never rented or played the SNES version cuz I knew of the censorship, and I had the PC uncensored version from a very young age since we got it almost straight from the guys who made the game just downtown (literally a 10-15 minute drive from where we lived. I grew up on Hegg Ave in Monona, WI and I know the ID guys lived in an apartment off Park St. I saw a pic of the building and said “yup, I know where that place is, tho there’s many similar Apartments in that neighborhood.” Not too far from Downtown Madison WI near the University of Wisconsin Campus. Madison was in its golden age during the 1990’s, it sucks really bad now. Rent used to be great, now it’s astronomically high thanks to rich real estate moguls who moved here from Cali and ruined the City, and companies like Google made offices here when no one wanted them except corrupt city officials.

Back in the day, the only way I could play wolf3d was the shareware which was circulated on floppies. very quickly is tarted modding and sharing these mods with other people on floppies. the first thing everyone did was to remove any WW2 references to make sure parents would not be alerted, it was a natural thing to do, the appeal for me was the gameplay, not the imagery and some mods were extremely good so I never felt i missed out on something. Edit: the game was banned in my area for the same reasons as in germany, so there was no real release, just bootlegs )
