The Green Brothers (of Vlogbrothers) have said similar things. On their podcast, someone asked them "do you have any tips for being successful on KZbin?" and they just laughed and then, John said probably the most honest thing I've ever heard a KZbinr say. He said something on the lines of "I don't know how to become famous on KZbin. We became famous in an era with a few people doing what we do".

I can believe it. It’s easy to become the biggest beauty guru or biggest gamer on the website when you’re literally the only one. Now a days you have millions of search results for just one topic so it’s hard to find smaller creators

KZbin is so saturated to the point where trying to get famous is just a joke and an unattainable goal. You have to put out the most cookie cutter type content to get some attention on the site, and even then it might not be enough.

I ended up gaining so much more respect for Ian after Defy's shutdown. He didn't give up on it, I understand why Anthony did, but Ian stuck by and saved not only something he helped create but the jobs of so many other people. I know a lot of older fans stopped liking Smosh due to the intro of the new members but I like them, they were given a shit position at Defy and once they were all free from it they've been thriving. I even love the even newer castmates like Jackie or Kimmy, Smosh is doing something no other channel can pull off and it's honestly amazing to watch in real-time. I'm happy they overcame that shitty situation and thanks to Rhett and Link for making sure it won't happen again.

The new Smosh content isn’t for everyone, and it probably isn’t for their audience during their “old” days. The “new” Smosh has more childish content and that’s what it’s aimed for. The semi-new five (and even six including Damien) have all done a good job filling in, especially with the Defy Media struggle. Shayne is probably one of the funniest people on KZbin, in my opinion. The newer members are slowly making their way into videos as well. While they don’t get as much views as they did before, I think they’ve done a damn good job with how much adversity they faced.

I'm glad Mythical bought them, as it seems like what should happen. They are fellow youtubers who probably not only understood the value of smosh and what its fan-base wanted, but the struggles the creators had to go through. It seems like an act of collaborative empathy, and it makes me happy to see people put their faith in their peers and prop them up when they need help.

i'm super glad this video didn't paint the other members of the cast as the issue and really focused in on defy. I really love watching the Smosh channels these days because of how authentic they feel. Shayne and Damien are some of the funniest people on youtube and I think a lot of (not all but a lot) the people saying that they don't like Smosh because of these "new people" haven't watched any of their videos recently. They're endearing and genuinely funny.
@Vdrum1010

Nostalgia can unfortunately be blinding. And hey, it's understandable, but we really have to learn to adapt and stop clinging on fond memories. I've been with Smosh since the beginning, since the Pokemon video, since the Food Battles, Sex Education, the countless sketches they have done. But I also dig their new content; Try Not to Laugh is awesome, so is Smoshcast. The Smosh Summer/Winter Games have been a blast to watch.
@blazehaze233

I really liked that about this video, it is super important. The smosh members have expressed how much online harassment they've dealed with since they started working for smosh, and it's really sad because they're all genuinely good and funny people and they deserve to have a chance.

al I never thought that they specifically were the problem. But I thought that the content in general was already going downhill even before they joined. @aelivare2775

Brandon Gray i really feel like it’s more of a thing where most of Smosh’s original audience have grown up and their tastes in humour have deviated from what Smosh puts out. I remember seeing the Try Not To Laugh where they had LunchClub on and finding LC a lot funnier than the Smosh cast. Did I bash the Smosh cast? No, because I just realised that their humour is different from LC’s, and I currently find LC funnier. Maybe in the future my sense of humour will change again and I’ll find LunchClub unfunny. The whole ‘they just aren’t funny’ thing seems ignorant to me. Humour is subjective.

As someone who lost interest in Smosh years ago due to their sudden change in approach to how they went about their content, I'm happy that they're still able to thrive in the modern era of KZbin, and that both Ian and Anthony are able to pursue what they love doing without fear. All I can hope for them now is that they're still keeping in touch with one another, and helping each other out from time to time. Because if there's anything I want to be preserved from the humble early days of Smosh, it's the brotherly bond Ian and Anthony had. By the way, Rhett and Link are lifesavers who deserve nothing but the best.

I think they are still in contact but they do not display so on the surface level. I think that the bond they share is deep because they go way back before youtube or even smosh was a thing. It has now transformed into a more personal and intimate bond.

@@AndrewTheKingOfPenguins that's why I respect Ian. He makes smart choices, but this all happened because a group of preteens decided to be together for doing a science group back in middle school. Man, all I have to say is that I wish best of luck for both of them. I even used to watch them back then until 2013/2014 because as it stands out, the company was forcing smosh and the whole group to doing something that they didn't want to do.

I gotta be honest, I really admire how much Smosh changed over the years. When people say "I miss the old Smosh", they very clearly mean "I miss when I was a kid". Because, let's be real, *much* of the old content really doesn't hold up these days - I mean, humor in general has changed so much. I won't say I tune into the sketches like I used to (I'm too old at this point), but I love the videos they put out on Smosh Pit. Most days, I honestly totally forget Anthony even *was* on Smosh. He's doing so well for himself, I don’t understand why everyone wants to tie him down to Smosh. And everyone who is left at Smosh is so incredible. I'm so happy to have witnessed Shayne, Keith, Courtney, Olivia, Noah, and Damien grow the way they did both personally and creatively, and I adore Kimmy, Jackie, and Amanda - all of these people bring such interesting dynamics to a channel and brand that has gone through so much and somehow still persevered. Props to Ian for somehow fighting his way through all the bullshit and still coming out on top and building something so amazing and fun.

I was just thinking about Smosh's evolution, actually. I'm pretty happy with the Smosh Squad but I'm confused as to what's happening with people like Jackie or Kimmy, who feature in videos but are gone from a lot of others. Smosh Pit is my favourite channel because of how natural and fun a lot of its content is, sort of emulating the stuff from years and years before it became a company. Speaking of which- I feel like that's the downfall of a lot of Smosh's current content. It's pretty inconsistent between feeling like a company making videos, and a group of people making funny, rewatchable ones.

TBH that's just how marketing works. When companies want to advertise with a creator they often look at what their demographics are like in order to determine if it fits their customer (i.e. Manscaped is not going to Advertise on Ryans Toy Reviews). From Defy and any MCNs perspective, the focus IS on views as that's what rakes in the money from advertisers, whether viewers like it or not. That's not to say they're not scummy.... They Are, no argument there.

Heres my opinion: to anyone saying "new smosh sucks, old smosh good" or whatever: new smosh and old smosh are for 2 different audiences. As they said in the smoshcast, only a very small portion has stuck around for both eras. And if you don't like new smosh it's not surprising if you used to watch old smosh, you are watching very different content. They can't possibly make 2010 content in 2020. To be honest. Smosh has run its natural course and then some. KZbin channels aren’t forever, and the only reason smosh is getting flack from old fans is because they miss the old formats, but here’s the thing. There is no way in hell those formats would work today, KZbin and the general landscape has changed so much that the content smosh would put out in 2010 just won’t work now or ever again. I agree that those times were the “golden age” of smosh, but you can’t expect them to stay that way. Them turning into some sort of corporate is natural considering that every “og youtuber” had to either die out, quit, or be forced to change and diversify themselves, the latter happening to smosh. I say this as a person who’s been watching smosh since like 2008 on and off. I don’t enjoy the current smosh main channel content, but the smosh pit channel is actually entertaining (only some videos, granted) it seems to me that they newer members are...well, better as being natural instead of scripted.

Smosh Pit carried the Smosh brand for a few years. Like, who would’ve thought that letting the new cast members be them natural funny selves was a better way to acclimate the audience to them than the same tireless middle school skits that they’ve been doing since 2012

Smosh were the first youtubers I ever watched and I would religiously wait for every single new video.They were a pretty substantial part of my life for awhile to say the least. And now after all these years, it makes me so happy to see Anthony doing his own amazing things and the rest of the smosh crew triumphing through so many obstacles to keep the channel alive and well. Even if I don’t watch them as avidly as I did when I was younger, they’ll always hold a nostalgic, special place in my heart. This video was amazing by the way!!

Even when Anthony was having an identity crisis of sorts when he first went solo, he was still gold. That Pokemon by himself was legendary, him and Tennessee Luke made a hilarious pair, even him reviewing slime was epic "I've never seen colours before!" Anthony was blessed with a gift of hilarity and is a trail blazer. I just feel bad for Nin who was on his DID episode. Anthony did nothing wrong. He was very sweet with her and her alters. It was Trish Paytas being her usual troll self after that episode. But Trish will eventually get the current Shane Dawson treatment; she's "claimed" to be black, trans, and "has" DID while making a mockery of all these things. It's only a matter of time.

I’m honestly enjoying smosh now the same amount I did back in the day, I was like 12 watching them in their hay day, I’m 19 now, and after not watching them for years coming back and seeing the new cast members I was put off, but my god are they super talented and funny af, if anyone were to replace Anthony shayne would be perfect, shayne and Damian alone could start their own channel if they wanted, and not to forget the rest of the cast, Courtney, Keith, Tommy, even their crew. I think the most important thing is that they genuinely seem like they enjoy what they do. It never feels forced or like they are doing it to get it over with which is rare on KZbin now

I stopped watching Smosh back when I was in high school and I always thought that it was because I had outgrown them (this was not long after they started Smosh Games and El Smosh and whatnot), but I now realize it was because their content was becoming so watered down.
