As a dad it disgusts me to hear stories like Matt's. His dad knew exactly what he was doing. He felt that money was his, and manipulated his son to get it. And then not to pay it back after all these years is further proof he just wanted the money because he felt it was his and he probably has no intent of paying it back. There is a special place in you know where for this embarrassment of a father. And you can say maybe he was the greatest dad ever till this happened, its no excuse. This was not an accident, or a misspoken word in the the heat of an argument. This was intentional and he took advantage of his own son when his mother just passed. There were months when I wasn't sure how I would make the mortgage and it did not cross my mind for a second to take money from my kids, regardless of where the money came from.

I lived overseas for a couple of years, and it was life changing. If you can do it, I would recommend it. If you have the money saved to cash flow a 1 year MBA abroad, it will likely be unforgettable. You may not be free to do so in future, once a spouse or kids come along. Another option is to do an MBA in the US and then work abroad.

The lady on the call breaks my heart. I can't even imagine what she and her husband have been going through. Money is always a grub fest. As to real estate in California, the median home price (the entire state), is between $800K - $904K. I am in Santa Clarita and in a typical housing tract built in the mid 80's. House next door is a 2 story 3 bed, 2 bath, powder room, with attached 2 car garage and a nice back yard. Guess . . . $748K, and nothing special. There are no "cheaper areas." So the lady is correct, coming back isn't an option unless they want to do that. And they don't as they are debt free. I just wish them the best and smooth sailing from here on out. Glad they have a good neighbour, too.

I kinda followed your financial plans. After 30+ years my student loan is paid off. We were stupid with our money over the years and after my husband passed in late 2017 I took a job in TX and thought I would get it paid off then but it didn't happen. I left that job to take care of my mom when her nursing home closed but before I could get back to her, she passed in 2020 and then COVID hit. I took survivor benefits from my husband and did not work for all of 2020. I did start working minimum wage jobs in 2021-2023. Then I lucked out getting a job back in TX in August 2023. At that time I had enough of everything. I paid off $7k in credit card debt. I just paid off $18k in student loan debt in May 2024 after 30+ years. My truck will be paid off in two years I did buy a house this year since it is half the cost of renting here. I bought down the interest rate to 6% and I'm fixing it up so in two years I can sell it at a greater profit. Some times people just have to hit rock bottom like I did to finally do something about it. I'm 65 this year and can't retire. I make after taxes, health insurance, etc about $2,200 every other week. I use one full pay check paying my mortgage, utilities, truck payment and car insurance. The other check I will now start putting into the bank for retirement. I don't eat out but once every other week. If I want something I make sure it is absolutely necessary and I get it second-hand. I'm doing the rice and tuna fish diet - don't like beans. And my goal is not to retire until I have $100k and debt free totally before I retire.. I will get about $3k from social security so even if they cut it back by 30% I'll be okay. If I can do it, any body can do it.

So another lot of shares (BRK.B) were created at a faction of the price (now about $407.10) to allow more people/entities to invest more affordably. I believe these were crated from the float of an existing company and renamed.

Linda - you might need to move to another state. There are still states where you can purchase a decent house for less than $150,000. If you have a low income and few assets, in many cities like the one where my Mom lives, you do not have to pay real estate taxes. That could be a savings of $300 a month - and you would not have that advantage if renting. Also, you can continue to work from home part-time for several more years or you could rent out one room if you found the right kind of house and the right person. Taking care of your financial future is the most important step for you right now. Even if you have to move away from family, they can come and visit you. Take a 30 year mortgage if that's all you can qualify for and make extra principal payments. You sound motivated enough to pay it off as soon as you can. YOU are responsible for YOU.

It is a legal question for an attorney and, once again, the RS people answer questions they are not qualified to answer - and this team seems totally unable to say, "I don't know. You will need to check with an attorney on this one." The lady was calling in about an irrevocable trust which is different from a revocable trust. In general, a revocable trust can be changed at will, but an irrevocable trust cannot be changed without securing the permission of the beneficiaries as well. So she should be fine, unless there is some forgery going on with the original documents. I don't know if she has a copy of those or not. If she does not, the cost to hire an attorney to actually claim the money might cost her all the money that she is concerned about. What she could do for less money is simply to hire an attorney to see if the irrevocable trust is still in force or if it has been changed and then decide how to proceed from there. However, attorney's fees generally are upward of $500 and hour and that adds up fast.

A lot of people aren't good at figuring out what to do. I think they got great advice. Move and just let it go. And I like when he said about keeping it in your head. @@Trustbutverify2651 Dr. John holds a Bachelors in psychology/ humanities, Masters in Education, PhD in higher Ed, PhD in counseling. That was a clinical counseling practicum (Matter of fact, John’s had his counselor practicum supervisor Dr. Michael Gomez on his show to advise him before.) John taught counselors how to be clinically licensed counselors and was an LPC in the state of TX before choosing NOT to get relicensed in the state of TN. So you are correct he is currently not a practicing mental health professional BUT he was one in the past and has the knowledge, credentials, and experience to speak on it. He’s also a former crisis responder with the police department and has extensive experience in how to counsel people in grief and traumatic situations! So NOT only does he just write about mental health, he’s also counseled people in practicum, and in real life messy situations and continues to this day behind closed doors, on stages, and on the phone.
