My mom was a high paid attorney for decades. She was diagnosed with dementia in 2012. She had no money, no will. I was able to get the POA before she got really bad (recommend). She lived with me for 4 years, it is VERY hard. It became hard to keep her safe, including when I should have been sleeping, and someone always had to be there. She went to assisted living in a group home (these are great, look into them, only six other women in a house). She also went to adult daycare which gives the caretaker a break, look into that. Now she is in a nursing home, on Medicaid as Dave stated. Just know you are not financially responsible personally for any of it, because it can hurt your family and children. Best of luck.

My grandmother had dementia as well. My family started out caring for her at home, but as you mentioned, it can become unsafe for everyone. So, we eventually put her in a nursing care facility. We didn't have a great experience, and then we moved her to a group home and she got much better care. My heart goes out to all caregivers - it's much more overwhelming than I had realized...AND I'm so grateful for the time I had with her.

I took care of my beloved Mother for Seven years as she suffered through and endured Parkinson's Disease and Lewy-Body Dementia. I myself am also afflicted with a legally disabling Blood Disorder. NONE of my relatives helped and they could be EXTREMELY volatile, cruel, and trauma-inducing during the very occasional instances in which they were around. The state we lived in (Florida) offered very few resources as help until end of life Hospice amid her final months, weeks, and days. Caring for my Mother was the honor of my Life and yet, it was also the most arduous endeavor I have ever undertaken. She and I were PROFOUNDLY close. I miss my sweet Mother with every breath. 🖤

Dave’s comments on the 1st caller was spot on. I take care of my mom now who was not financially smart so needs help. I’m so glad Dave calls out people to do the right thing like teaching kids about saving money and having a will! I’m not gonna be in that position in my 70’s! I’m learning from my family’s mistakes 😮😅

Hello here watching. My mother has dementia. It is a terrible disease. She is in memory care now. We tried keeping her at home, but it got really tough. Trying to work full time, she hardly sleeps. It wasn't safe any longer. Please remember to take care of yourself as well. Being a caretaker takes its toll for sure.

George's genuinely thoughtful comment at the 100:10 mark took that call to a who other level and Dave ran with it and next thing I knew my eyes were leaking b/c that was exactly my story. I see all the Ramsey personalities try and do this but George & John are the only ones I see nail it like that in the way that Dave does. George is even more impressive being so young & able to do that.

Rachel should check with her local Social Services agency. They often have resources available to help with elder care. Also, check in with her local library - again they usually have lists of local agencies that can help with elder and memory care. Her mother’s doctor and hospital ombudsman might have other resources too. Depending on how advanced her mom’s Alzheimer’s is, she might also look into adult daycare. This will help her get a break and have some space to breathe. (Speaking from experience, you really can’t be there all day and all night and still maintain your sanity.)

He was evaluated last year and it was agreed that he had lost executive function however because he was drinking they would not diagnose the type of disability he has. My point is while having a health care POA is good advice it is not a silver bullet .

My grandmother had Alzheimer’s for 20+ years (rare for someone to live that long with it). My mom and aunt’s (4 of them) spent about half of that time taking turns taking care of her in the beginning stages. I grew up seeing it all and the toll it took on everyone. She did not remember us and could not even talk. It came a time when it physically became too difficult to care for her. She was placed in a nursing home but we would all take turns visiting her on different days and being active around her, though we weren’t even sure what she could of been feeling or thinking. Nursing home doesn’t mean abandonment, it means help for the health of everyone. Him mentioning it made perfect sense to me as something to plan for in the future financially. That call hit home for me and I can only imagine it being just one person to care for her when my grandmother had multiple daughters. Not to say there isn’t people that abandon their parents in nursing homes because I spent a lot time in my childhood talking with the other folk that were being cared for in those facilities as well. The caller reminded me of my aunts so I doubt she’s do that.
@kay22100
@kay22100 10 ай бұрын
@@mikeym708 My point is she knows it’s an option. Nothing about this call sounded like she wanted to do that. Nursing homes should be the absolute last resort unless the person wants to be there. Most of the workers there do not care about the patients. Some of them do but many patients aren’t well taken care of. The workers aren’t paid much and staffing is low at many places. If a person gets to a point where they cannot take care of their parents then you have to do what you have to do. Her situation did not sound so bad where she can’t. My grandma and aunt both take care of my great-grandma. I just come from a family who believes in taking care of each other so the whole family helps. We believe in sacrifice whether the person knows who we are or not. None of the elderly people in our family have ever been put in a home. I will say if they decide to put their loved one in a home they need to be there regularly to see what’s going on. My issue with Dave is he doesn’t believe in sacrificing for others. Sacrificing for other people means some times we will be inconvenienced and feel discomfort for the sake of another. That is one part of Christian doctrine he does not seem to understand.
@sarahkeplinger7550
@sarahkeplinger7550 6 ай бұрын
I worked in the industry and so often it was not as “roses” as your situation. ALMOST always it was one person doing the caretaking and NONE of the other family helping. We always said the person who needs the care WILL be taken care of. The caregiver was the one who sacrificed EVERYTHING and their own detriment. You cannot keep up with taking care of the elderly nowadays. Healthcare has made it that the elderly live a looongg time and need care for looong period of time. It is not sustainable for one person to do it. I was single, working a job 60 hours a week and had TWO seniors in my house to take care of. One had dementia. I was gonna end up in the hospital and would have lost my job AND home. Then who would have been taking care of them…..the nursing home….and what would have happened to me? Homeless and on welfare. Everyone has limits and I could even recognize the fear, stress and desperation in her voice! Thank you Dave!

Wow Dave is such a Christian yet he'd throw this ladies mom in a home just so finances aren't upset. Thats really showing me a lot about your character Dave, or lack there of. Disgusting. Absolutely vile.

Lady, Dave didn’t do anything to that family other than give them logical advice on the best path forward. They put themselves in the situation they are in, not Dave. If you don’t agree, fine. But calling Dave “vile” is just absurd. Let this be a lesson encouraging you to have the money necessary to take care of yourself in the future so your family won’t have to.

Get a grip. You obviously don't know the toll it takes to care for a person with Alzheimer's. I've seen it happen. One of my friends was regularly physically attacked by his father, even having a chair broken over his head. When the father severely beat up my friend's wife, they made the decision to transfer him to a nursing home. I saw another friend delaying breast cancer treatment because she was caring for her mother. It was a good day when her mother didn't bite her. I watched another couple getting into serious financial trouble because the wife quit work to care for his parents. They had teenage children to support as well. They stripped most of their assets in bare survival. Pay attention to people who are struggling to care for their parents and stop being so judgmental.
