For those confused, the 79 Yard punt that bounces off the top of the Pylon is the only time I've ever seen that happen. Incredibly rare.
@paulready8897Ай бұрын
It should be a touchback because the pylon is considered part of the end zone. I’ve seen running backs reach out and hit the pylon with the ball, which was ruled a touchdown.

@@paulready8897 Correct, but it's such a cool thing to do that it's a shame they don't reward the punter for it.

Can the Dolphin's punter get some love? If he doesn't pin the Jags on the 2-yard line twice, they don't drive 90 + yards, and the RB doesn't get fatigued and fumble for a touchback; effectively flipping the game. Great Videos!

Impressive, but I once saw an 80 yard punt by a 12 year old 7th grader in JFL. Now, to be fair, he had a wind gusting to 40mph at his back. I was the coach, and I told him to go out and kick the ball as high and hard as he could and let the wind do the rest. He kicked it nearly straight up, the ball went over 50 yards in the air, then bounced to right way. He kicked from his own 20, and the ball was downed at the 1/2 yard line. Pretty cool memory for the kid. He punted in high school and at a small college, and he never replicated that distance….not even close.

Its funny they count a fg from where kicked and a punt from LOS
@chili015Ай бұрын
@Youngguns42303 - It's because you measure forward progress from where the ball was downed. For a field goal, after the placeholder receives the snap, he sets the ball on the ground to be kicked, so it's measured from there since the ball is touching the ground. For a punt, the ball doesn't touch the ground, so it's measured from where it was snapped (it doesn't count if the snap hits the ground first or the punter drops the ball, picks it back up, and then kicks it).

There are two missiles I remember and this goes back to when I was a wee little boy. Ray Guy who although a punter drilled a 61 yard field goal in a snowstorm in Utah. Then in 72 he drilled a 93 yard punt against their rivals Mississippi. Dude had a cannon attached to his hip.
@lucasmembrane47632 ай бұрын
A punt hitting the pylon that has not previously gone out of bounds is a touchback, not as good as going out or bounds or coming to rest anywhere inside the 25 nowadays. I'm not sure if this is still the rule, but back in the 1960's, the rule was that when possession changed when a punt went out of bounds, the ball would be spotted for the receiving team so that the forward end of the ball would be where the punt went out. But if the punt went out so close to the goal line that the back end of the ball would be on or over the goal line, the receiving team would be given a little bonus so that they weren't starting where no gain would result in a safety -- the ball would be spotted with its back end an inch or so from the goal line. I would say that is or was the rarest punt in college football, and I did see it happen. Tragically, the receiving team's first subsequent play from scrimmage was a 100 yard touchdown pass (crossed 99 yard lines and the punting team's goal line).
