There have been a few VERY subtle hints at a more advanced society outside the walls: Season 2 scene where Ymir picks up a can of herring and Reiner confronts her about being able to read the language; herring is an ocean fish, it doesn't exist inside the walls, and canning is a post industrial revolution technology. During the scene where Ymir eats one of the warriors, their camping gear is shown, one of the items is a coffee-grinder(it will later reappear in season 3 part 2, Armin finds coffee mugs and doesn't know what drink it is); Coffee grows in tropical climates, so there is an impication of global trade. The overall clothing and gear of the warriors is also styled like early 20th century gear. Grisha Yeager came from outside the walls and one of the 1st things he did was to save the town from an epidemic, implies he had more advanced medical knowledge Probably some more, but that's the ones I remember

Another hint for it in season 1. In the flashbacks of Annie's father, he says to her "the whole world might be against you...". This, at the time, can be just seen as a hyperbole, but then we find out there is actually a "whole world".

Bertholdt and Reiner wear lace-up military combat boots when they were sitting on the wall outside of Shinganshina waiting for the Scouts. they are the type of boots that was a significant development in military apparel not available/in use pre-industrial revolution. things like shoelaces and buttons were not mass-produced pre-industrial revolution since you'd need specific machineries to do that. Annie straight up wears a hoodie. "I'm going for a perfect game" - Zeke as he throws rocks at the Scout's calvary charge. "perfect game" is a baseball terminology. "perfect game" on its own is elusive enough, but with the imagery of Zeke throwing rocks and his specific throwing form? not so elusive anymore. and baseball is a fairly modern sport that was invented in the 1800s.

I love the way Isayama contrasts Armin and Eren with a small difference in dialogue. When the two of them are talking about their “source of strength” the dialogue changes ever so slightly. Eren says “ I don’t know why, but when it comes to taking back our stolen freedom, I feel strength flow through me.” Armin says “ I don’t know why, but when I think of the outside world, strength flows through me.” I just think it’s a nice touch that emphasizes where their respective motivations lie. Armin’s desire to see the outside world stems from his own natural curiosity. Eren’s desire to see the outside world seems to stem from being indignant that he can’t see it, that his freedom is restricted.

Eren's confession during the Serum argument that he actually forgot about his and Armin's dream to see the ocean together a long time ago and only had thoughts of hate in his head is honestly a huge moment for his character and establishes the difference between Eren and Armin and how they perceive their childhood dream of reaching the sea. I'm gonna quote an interview Isayama did for volume 18 back when in it released. Isayama: "Eren then was different from Armin who fought for the goal of seeing the sea once. In truth Eren is not committed to the sea. Even though Eren and Armin became great childhood friends because they shared the dream for "the world outside walls" but the root of that dream has some slight differences. Armin possessed a curiosity for knowledge, and held onto the thought of "I want to see the sea". On the other hand Eren viewed it as, "The sea exists but we don't have the freedom to see it" and he felt indignation towards that. He was not interested in the sea itself. Other than this, throughout the story all the situations Eren became involved with continues to change and his grasp of the sea itself subsequently fades. The gradual clarity of how the two of them have diverged in perspective, and Armin's own shock towards this realization, that's the story of that scene in volume 18" The scene Isayama's talking about is from the end of Season 3 part 1 when Eren, Mikasa and Armin are sat together talking about how things have changed, Armin mentions the outside world and the sea to Eren but Eren doesn't react and it causes Armin to realise that Eren doesn't care about their "shared" dream in the same way he does. When he talks about how he joined the Survey Corps to see all the scenery outside the walls and Eren brushes it off and says "Yeah I know you did" not including himself as if the dream only applies to Armin.
@zbox9133 ай бұрын
Yep, you can see this when they reach the sea too! It is evident that Eren does not share Armin’s enthusiasm. Eren had always assumed that reaching the sea would mean they’re finally free, and when he gets there, he realizes they’re not and can’t enjoy the moment with the rest.

53:13 You haven’t got it fully (no spoilers ahead) I think your mis-translated copy might be causing confusion as this point links back to the titans “not wanting to be by the sea”. It’s not that they have to get the titans away from the sea or that the titans want to be away from the sea but the officers from Marley want to get the titans away from the wall they are stood on so they don’t get eaten by the prisoners once they are turned into titans. Only Eldians are taken to the island but they always let one go first to run away so it baits the titans away from them so they are safe. To summarise, they want to get the titans away from the wall, not the sea, so they will be safe after transforming the prisoners. They always shove one off the wall without transforming them to act as bait for this. Only Eldians, which is the race that can turn into titans, are taken to the island. I’m sure there are some Marleyan’s that do help them and commit other crimes but I would guess these people are executed back home or simply put in jail. Hope that clears things up.

I love how the parallelism between Erwin and Armin plays out but also the differences that make each their unique self, Erwin comes up with a plan, stalls out saying anything about it, his dream is what drove him forward all this time but at that point it was the one thing holding him back but his consciousness pushed him 3/4ths of the way and he kinda delegates command to levi as a bit of a final gamble so he can either be like "noo Erwin don't do it, you're too important" or order him to die giving him the final push to give up his dream and he (in his own words) assumes the role of the conman one last time, meanwhile armin doesn't have a plan so he delegates command to jean while he recolects himself, once the plan enters his head, he is fully committed, he's ready to give up his dream, which is also what drove him forward and he knows he has to lie like a dog to eren because otherwise he's not gonna let him do it

One nuance about the ocean scene! When Eren sees the sea, it's the first time he's confirming the info from his father's journal/memories with his own eyes. Not only did he not get to relish seeing the sea, when he saw it, it just confirmed it was already spoiled for him in memories.
@ginonline53 ай бұрын
Interesting fact lost in the translation: When Eren wakes up in his cell and asks "Who am I ?", Armin is seemingly perplexed by his question. But if we look at the original text in Japanese, we can see that it's not the question itself that intrigued Armin, but the pronoun Eren used to refer to himself. Throughout the series, Eren always refers to himself using "Ore", which is a more informal pronoun used by men in casual situations with close friends and family. In this scene, however, Eren used "Watashi", which is a gender-neutral pronoun in formal settings that is also usually used by women in informal setting. So as his childhood friend, Armin saw this as out of character for Eren. This is however the pronoun usually used by Grisha to refer to himself, which shows that Eren is experiencing the past not just as a spectator, but as his own father. From this, we can see that relieving someone else's memories is a much more overwhelming experience than we think and that the person going through this experience runs the risk of loosing track of their own identity.

I don't think the Reiss family erased progress, more so than the inhabitants of the walls lived in isolation for a long time (I don't remember if it's revealed how long in that part of the story), and therefore the rest of the world developed different technologies than inside the walls. That being said the Reiss family definitely suppressed any technology that would allow anyone to leave the island, see Armin's parents, but despite that the ODM gear was still developed in response to the titan, and it's arguably more advanced than the technology we see in Marley, which is around 1930s/40s.

so a correction on the armin wall deduction. Armin's reasoning is actually a bit different, he reasons that because reiner and bertholdt weren't there when annie was captured (they realized there are titans in the walls) they don't know that the scouts are aware that the walls are HOLLOW and could hide people inside of them. Reiner and Bertholt would assume that they had the advantage of knowing of this hiding place, where the scouts would assume the walls are solid and not check them for cavities.

I think Levi remembered what Kenny told him at the end of his life: *'People need to be drunk on something in order to keep moving forward.'* Erwin is intoxicated by the idea of discovering the truth, but once that goal is achieved, his motivation would fade. Levi also recalled the three protagonists talking about their dream of seeing the ocean, and he realized that Armin's 'drunkenness'-his dream-is more enduring, giving him a stronger and longer-lasting drive to help humanity. In the end, Levi was right: that kind of motivation is exactly what humanity needs to survive in their world.

I really liked the ocean scene with Eren acting kinda weird, sad, and tired of it all. I felt like it really showed how hopeless he felt that even after reaching this fantastical place him and Armin used to read about in a book, even after fighting through so much adversities, betrayals, mysteries, and heartbreak, and powering through what used to be an impossibility for humanity, he still couldn't achieve the freedom he wanted - he still had a hurdle which sits on the other side of the ocean waiting for him. To him, it must've felt like an endless cycle of strife and grief all to appease an idea of freedom that's always out of reach no matter how much he fights and moves forward even with the tremendous power he is given. Juxtapose that with Jean, Conny, and Sasha just having the time of their lives on this beach and everyone else just taking this scenery and place in, completely ignorant to the scale of what's to come.

In regards to the truth in the basement, I actually guessed it very early on in the series. There was one very telling thing to me- Armin's book about the outside world. Iirc books on the outside world were banned, and I figured the only reason for that would be the government wanting to keep something about the world a secret from the citizens. The only secret that would make sense would be for the titans to only be a problem for this country, humanity hadn't been wiped out and driven behind walls, and the rest of the world was perfectly fine. I didn't expect it to be WWII era tho, I thought it would be closer to current times.

1:05:17 only that, one of the things that stood out to me is that him having seen the memories of his father and or kruger + all of the horrible feelings asociated with that place meant this was not his first time experiencing the ocean and that even if this place isn't completely ruined by those memories they certainly would have taken out the magic of it all Also a thing that always struck me as negative is that they say the attack Titan always fights for freedom for Freedom's sake, freedom (from my point of view) shouldn't be the end goal but a tool to reach the end goal and the way they phrased it always raised some red flags inside my head Imagine hearing someone saying oh i fight in this war because I fight, fight is what i seek. instead of i fight because my house and friends are threatened or i got conscripted and I don't want me or my friends to die out here Or for something less violent let's try: I do art because I do art not because it allows me to express anything or because it can evoke a feeling in someone else, it's not because it's a way of interacting with the world that wouldn't be possible for me to do if I didn't have art, i just do art for the sake of art. honestly it sounds like that person's art would be empty of meaning and it would absolutely suck

Maybe ask someone you trust to filter through the comments, so that you dont see it with your own eyes. That way you can still get some interaction with the comments! 😁😁

I understand not having a strong preference on Armin vs. Erwin, and also understand the urge to pick Erwin from a "strategy" perspective-but one thing that I feel is usually not sufficiently noted is that the story *very* clearly is saying that it's Armin that needs to be picked. "Everyone had to be drunk on something to keep going," right? When Levi asks Erwin what he'll do after reaching the basement, he says "I don't know." After reaching the basement and finally fulfilling his dream, the person that Erwin was would be fundamentally different and it's not clear that he'd be the right person to lead humanity in the walls into the next part of their history. Moreover, Erwin's dream ends in the dark, dank, buried under rubble and buried underground basement with some information about the past. Armin's dream is not *down* but *out*, into and across the wider world. It's a dream of unending curiosity, which is really the thing that makes a Scout a Scout. It's an honest dream that he doesn't lie about or sacrifice others to achieve; it's one that he was even willing to forego by sacrificing himself. Erwin-and this isn't meant as a slight-had to have Levi "command" him to sacrifice himself and his dream. He wasn't strong enough to do it himself. Totally different note: yeah, the WW2/ghettos stuff caught a lot of us by surprise. I think it's meant to be surprising! Remember that people who watched or read this story as it was coming out had waited 7-8 **years** to finally learn what's in the basement. Even though it's a fire hose of information, as you say, that's what we needed after all the suspense and build-up over that near-decade. That said, there are a couple of hints: the obvious ones being the comments about "an evil race" or "a vile race". More tellingly, if you go back to... 2x11, maybe 2x10? when Bert is crying while talking to the Scouts assembled on Reiner, he makes some comments that you think are about him, Reiner, and Annie, but they're actually about his self-perception as an Eldian. He talks about how "we just couldn't escape from our sins", to wit. One more thing, re: "to save Mikasa, Armin, and everyone else"-does that ring a bell somewhere? Maybe from early season 1? :) Okay, one MORE thing from the end of the video: "will Eren change by killing them all?" I think it's important to ask whether that *would* be a change. Granted, slightly different circumstances, but he murdered (and then some) those kidnappers in season 1 as a child.

So nice to see how you digest the story. I think you could just reflect on the words form Kruger "whose memories are these?" He is talking about a faint POV that came to him through paths, so it's not necessary for him to be that person.

You could split season four into two videos do the 24 episodes of season four as one video and the two movies as a separate video but definitely the more the merrier don’t want to have to condense your thoughts into one giant video when there’s so much that goes on
