Hey Brett much thanks for your research and details of the events at that time in history , I'm begining to understand what was going on behind the seen as I have read Wallace's memoirs and he was frustrated by the ring and didn't have the power to save the kid , but since he tried to replace bristol with ira lenard , probably there was a deal made with Mrs mc sween because why was Garrett in white oaks when the kid escaped Lincoln really and then poe was there shortly before that July night in 1881 and later we find out he was in on the cover up , there was deal probably , Wallace was bewildered and frightened by the power of the ring . And yes was agitated by Billy's popularity but not enough to want him dead , Wallace was ex military and probably in some way or another admired the kids moxy especially for a kid with a baby face to have real guts and courage to go against the ring in which even Wallace had problems with they're power

Wasn't Brushy Bill 20 years too young to be Billy the Kid? He would've been 2 years old when Billy was allegedly shot by Pat Garrett. And didn't members of Brushy Bill's own family state that he wasn't Billy? I don't doubt that Brushy Bill was an interesting man who may well have been involved in some kind of illegal activities in and around Lincoln County/New Mexico during his youth which naturally lead to him needing to conceal his real identity, but given his age, I just can't bring myself to believe he was Billy the Kid. Just because he knew a lot intricate details surrounding the life of Billy the Kid doesn't solidify his claim. If he moved in similar circles to Billy some years after the real Billy's death/disappearance, he could've easily found out all that he knew from people who may well indeed have known Billy personally. And while I accept that there was a resemblance to Billy in Brushy's younger years, my own eyes refuse to let me make the leap to believing that he actually was Billy. When I compare the 2 best photos we have of Billy, namely the famous tintype we all know and the Silver City photograph, and compare them to Brushy Bill's photos,...I'm sorry, but I just don't see a close enough resemblance. The eyes especially are just not right. And I don't care what some specialist photo recognition cop in New York says about that. Given Billy's natural ability to evade the law, it wouldn't surprise me at all if there is truth to the theory that he wasn't shot by Pat Garrett and indeed used the event to disappear into society under another identity. There seems to be more than enough evidence to support this theory if you go and read the books on the subject. The one thing I'm certain of, is that whoever is buried under that tombstone in Fort Sumner cemetery, it ain't Billy the Kid....if indeed there's anyone buried there at all. I'm sure the local business people will say he's there because of the financial benefits of the tourism aspect, but I'm sure the true feelings of the local residents are highly doubtful. Now there are just too many conflicting stories from all sorts of people recounting third hand information from individuals attempting to write themselves into Billy's legend that the real truths of the matter are no longer anything that can be proven outright. Whatever anyone believes about Billy is now sadly all down to personal opinion based on the information available. And it's not just Billy's story that gets re written facts mixed in with half truths and blatant lies and polished up to fit a convenient narrative,...ALL our history is subject to this same mistreatment.

Let's say Brushy was lying...that would mean he was one of the greatest researchers and Billy the Kid historians EVER! Out of all the conflicting accounts, how did Brushy always know which version to go with? When one account says that when Tunstall was killed, Billy chased after some turkeys and another says Billy was yards behind Tunstall, when others went after the turkeys; so how did Brushy know which version was accurate? How did Brushy know Billy traded his tintype to a woman for a scarf? How did Brushy know Bell had two gashes on his head, matching his version of clubbing him with handcuffs? How did Brushy know who Billy was chained to, in the wagon after his capture? Not to mention he knew the exact layout of the Maxell house, Tunstall's residence and the Lincoln County Courthouse, during the 1800's. Don't forget this was all in the 1940's and 50's, with no internet to easily access all of this information... The law didn't give Billy a fair deal his entire life, and it didn't in his final days as well, 70 years later. RIP, Brushy Billy the Kid Roberts

Pat did not kill Billy, they were such good friends that when Pat caught up with Billy and he told Billy to go to Mexico and don't come back or he will have to kill him so they killed the other guy and Brushy Bill was not Billy

One thing about Garrets story is I dont believe a killer like Billy would have taken so much time asking who was it, he would have just shot Garret with no questions asked, I think Garret was using poetic license or his friend who wrote it did, I hope escaped but cannot in all honesty believe that he did, though I dont know of any photograph of Billys dead body ever existed so who knows !

I've been following this story my whole life. I'm not a historian or some sort of expert but I have lived in those places. I think if there are answers to be had then they are in the Old World. I think the Lincoln County war was a feud from the Mother Land. If Billy was English he died. If he was Irish he lived. The problem with that is that there is no way that Billy could have been Irish. There is one caveat to that though, but I'm not at liberty to state that.

This was very informative. I'm very impressed. I thought there was a great chance brushy bill was Billy the kid, before. Not I'm closer to 100%. Brushy bills account of that night is remarkable. The corroborating evidence in your documentary shows he new a great deal more then he could have ,with out actually being present that night. So either this man was hanging out, and we never heard of him ,or it appears he most likely is Billy the kid. One thing to remember this was in the 1950's and the ability for brushy bill to get this information would be almost impossible at that time. Facts are facts and fiction is fiction. Short and sweet.

I've argued the case for Brushy Bill being Billy for a long time as his evidence has seemed irrefutable, but just recently I checked all Brushy's photos and John Miller's photos against the known Billy Tintype photo and all the alledged Billy photos, including the 2 men in the Street in Hico in the 30's. sorry to say, I've got to change my opinion as John Miller's photos came up as a match on the photo recognition app for all Billy's alledged photos and the tintype, including the old man in Hico staring at the camera. I couldn't get a read on the old guy standing next to him also staring at the camera, his face was blurred, he may have been Brushy, he was taller and had the wide mouth that Brushy had, Brushy may have been a long time friend, the other guy with the white beard and moustache certainly had Billy's persona, but John Miller matched everything, Brushy only matched himself. He's not Billy, John Miller was, like he said!

First of all , sederwall , graves and Sullivan proved brushy's story correct and Garretts to be false on the jail escape , how did Roberts know judge Parker's words when they were not published until 1974 and brushy's were published in 1955 and no way would poe go to white oaks to pay an old drunk bum 1 dollar for info , when the mc sween widow lived in white oaks she had money and lots of it that's why poe was in white oaks to collect a pay off . Cause Garrett knew where the kid was the whole time , him and the kid were family and worked together for many years after 1881 the kid took on the name bill carr and helped Garrett with the fountain murder investigation in 1896 and there is more .

I had no idea that the ancestors had written accounts that Billy the kid was not killed by Pat Garrett this is huge! just the other day I found a new tintype photo of Billy the kid with Pat Garrett in the photo as friends. it is the best known tintype so far that has been found and has not been released to the public yet. The photo is so well done it puts goosebumps and chills down my spine

You don't have to memorize the truth. It's not likely this 90 year old man memorized all of these details from books and got all the facts right; about who was where and what happened, about the layout of these homes and buildings. And what for? To get a pardon and pretend he was Billy the Kid for a couple years, at the end of his life? It just doesn't make sense _why_ he would make all this up and how he would commit all of this to memory. Now if he had experienced all of this, then it would make sense as to how he knew all of the details. Also I recently found an old copy of Pat Garrett's book and it is full of way more inaccuracies than Brushy's version of events. So this random old guy knew Billy the Kid's story, better than the former friend and sheriff who hunted him?

I believe Garret accidentally killed the wrong person. He thought it was Billy the Kid and it was someone else, so Garrett lied and just said it was Billy. The facial recognition is proof the Brushy Bill, was Billy the Kid!

What i read was that Billy had a kid from Texas who use to follow him around... What if Garret killed that kid, and Billy fled to Texas using that kid's identification? Garrets victim was shot in the face, so recognizing him would be difficult. I found it interesting that after, Garret spent most of his time in Texas 🤔 maybe with Brushy Billy
