I see this as a well detailed and accurate budget breakdown, based on my 13 years here so far. The original question, however, mentions architects and contractors. It should be noted that foreigners cannot buy or own property here. If you want to build or pay for a free-standing domicile, it will have to be in a Thai person's name. Trust is hard to come by here, and most guys who buy or build a home in a Thai wife's or girlfriend's name find themselves homeless and broke very quickly. Also, for me personally, I prefer to live in upcountry rural Thailand, where the experience is much more genuine, and the budget requirement is less than half of this breakdown. If I want the BKK or Pattaya experience, I can vacation there, and I'm not pooping in my own backyard. If you are here to teach, the salaries are also cut down by half, so it's all relative. There are lovely mid-sized cities, like Phitsanalok, Sukothai, or Nakhon Sawan that are large enough to have good shopping, dining, sightseeing and nightlife opportunities, but a much lower COL.

I am returning to Thailand in about 2 months. I am a total cheap charlie. However this time I think I have surpassed even myself. My girlfriend is a chef in a new restaurant in Prajin Buri. We have been given a 2 bedroom house on a rai of land to use for free. I already have a car and a motorbike so transport is just the cost of fuel and maintenance. I don't drink any more and of course I don't use ladies of the night (any more) . What with her salary and profit share I only have to really cover my own personal expenses. The house is so beautiful with established gardens and really peaceful. Man I can't wait to get back.

Retired expat living in Thailand. My O-A visa is 1,900 baht per year. I do myself, easy. Reentry visa if travel abroad is 1,000 baht.

WOW - - - As an old (elderly) US expat on his mediocre $1500 SS check - I find it hard to even spend that much when adjusting your numbers for a personalized frugal budget. -- And that's including a quite high dollar health insurance cost ! -- I suspect perhaps $1250 may do a comfortable enough retirement in Chaing Mai most months. --?-- At least for people like myself who have extravagance under control and have some experience with 'discernment' between a want & a need. --?-- THANKS FOR THE LAY OUT. > Makes for personalizing our own very easy !

My wife and I own a studio condo here right on the BTS line about 10-15 minutes from Siam Square which I rent out, at Talat Phlu. It is partly furnished and has a kitchen, washing machine and bed. This past Saturday we had our renter move out. We cleaned it and then rented it out in the afternoon for 7,200 baht. So, fact that 7-8k baht is doable for a studio. You can find older one bedrooms in this range as well but maybe not all of the amenities like pool, fitness room and parking like my condo has.

I base my COL on the following each month. Rent + Electric 20k, 1.5k Daily for food and entertainment. 7k for motorcycle + gas. total is 70,000. and that is staying home most days of the week and cooking at home. I live in the Pattaya Area, have also lived in Bangkok on the same budget. I can go as high as 150k monthly but why? Its up to you how you want to live and are happy. I once owned a Hotel and many properties, but often found myself stuck in the same office chair all day long. I have lived in mansions in Ayala Alabang in the Philippines as well but again, look at the personal space around you that you most often occupy each day, do you really need all that much more space? Why buy anything here in Thailand, Rent a nice condo and change every 6 to 12 months to get a new view or city. enjoy life and great foods.

Great advice Kyle. I think the only reason one should buy a property in thailand is if they want to leave it as a an asset for their loved ones in the future. Otherwise renting is the way to go. Thailand properties are also notoriously hard to sell off.

Well said Stanley, every individual has their own life style choices, I lived in Pattaya on 60,000.00 a month for 18 months , like yourself lived a “ normal lifestyle”, this is more than enough for a comfortable and better standard of living than in my own country,of course someone going out every night drinking and partying would spend more, from my experience this applies to people on holiday for 2 to 3 weeks,who have to make every day count. How many people in or about retirement age are out every night in there own country drinking and partying, if they are I think they may have a serious problem,trust me,when younger I was out 6- 7 nights a week, luckily I wised up in my early thirties, if I had not I probably would not be living today.

I spent 9 months in Thailand and traveling other Asian countries, I spent about 90k USD in total - I was 25 when I did this I'm only 27 now. I lived in a super amazing condo in the heart of Bangkok for 3 months and moved around the rest of the time. I had fun just throwing money around helping the local economy after Covid and spending it, that's why I made it. And I plan on doing it again next year with a bigger budget lol. I don't think I could sit around most days, that just seems like a waste of time and money to me. I do that back home. I would eat at a new food place every day when I was there. Partied nearly every night, no bar girls though wasn't my thing I got them naturally lol.

Thanks for the video. These numbers seem a little high for middle of the road compared to many other the other videos I've seen, but most of them were about Pattaya. I feel like your low end is about right and obviously with the high end, you can go as high as you can imagine. From what I've seen, a typical studio or one bedroom is 17-18K. I am guessing Bangkok is a little higher. The transportation cost is way higher than I'm used to seeing, but again you live in a much larger city. They have trucks that drive around you can jump on the back of for really cheap in Pattaya. If your on one of the lines, it's pretty cheap. The overall consensus from the 15-20 videos I have seen is 2K USD will get you a pretty good standard of living and for 3k or more, you are living like a king. My personal goal is to have 600K in a combo of bonds, dividend etfs, and a few other relatively stable investments before I move there at 50. Not including my 401K and Social Security which won't kick in until later.

Look upcountry, is my advice, Michael. You can live very well on that in central or NE Thailand and vacation wherever you choose to boot. You'll also have a much better chance of finding a girl you can trust.

Chris I found most of your numbers right on. Only one I found you could be do better is low rent. I have many Thai friends all over Thailand in Bangkok, Pattaya, Samui and they have a basic room with fan only no AC and they pay from 4000 to 8000 per month for rent. Great video mate.

I worked in Bangkok last year close to UN nation. Cost for my very nice studio was 6500b and mostly cook for myself cause I’m not into Thai food.. Just don’t drink or smoke. So at the end of the month I just spend around 450 to 500usd and my life there was really great. Spending in Thailand is a lot about location, if the person gonna trow his money on vice and the most important is... Can you care of yourself!? That point can be the key for saving lifestyle, if you need it ofc.

It’s interesting, I haven’t lived in Thailand permanently but have had quite a few 3 month stays pre covid and you get a good feel for the cost of living , I’m going back 10 years or so but I can remember when $500 Australian dollars a week was an amount you could live in total luxury . That middle chart is now $1000 a week au , a lot to do with the Aussies exchange rate I guess .

I also did a fair amount of travelling around 10-12 years ago through europe and southeast asia when the aussie dollar was at its peak, worth over 80 euro cents or like $1.10 USD. Even in Europe, everything was dirt cheap in comparison to Australia (especially being from west australia paying the jacked up 2010 mining boom prices).

Great info , it means 35K usd per year out of pocket. If you are over 65 , you pay higher Health insurance. You should add Taxes you pay back home plus Medicare, meaning you need almost 60K usd annual passive income. All that, without taking into account the -having a partner - costs. Good luck . 😊

This isn't a comment but rather a question. IN America often we see products written in English and some other language. What about prices? If I go to buy something will it usually have the American price on it too? The conversion seems to be a big factor to me. Not understanding the conversion would make it easy to pay way to much for things or be taken advantage of. Also, coming from the U.S. What bank should anyone consider using to withdraw our monthly income from? This would help to avoid transaction fees too. If I receive Social Security checks would it be best to have my funds put on a debit card or go get my funds from a bank? Let's say a guy receives $1600 USD and went to the bank to withdraw it, would the amount I put in my pocket be so large that I couldn't put it all in my wallet or pocket? These are things no one talks about. If you tell me a bank to use will this bank have multiple banks for me to use to avoid transaction fees?

oh, and I want to add on, the visa of 2k baht is actually only if you are going through the proper channels, but most people will not be going through that channel and may have to fork out around U$200-300 more money for agents and also to the government officials. I would say, entertainment can be considered the cheapest, because there are many cheap bars, both for male and female. you just have to curb your expectations. Utilities can be high if you live in some high-end condominums, where they charge you electric/water bills by the condo's juristic office which they more than likely could've marked up the amount. but i will say rent would be higher in bangkok, 10k would get you probably really old 1bedroom condo/apartments, you you are willing to give another 3-5k, you can get newer condos but at further places, like Bearing or Saphanthaksin and further up. you will be a long distance away from city centre. And BTS is ridiculously pricy in my opinion, in Malaysia, Singapore and even Indonesia, their public transport is way way cheaper.

Udon Thani fifteen minutes by car ( rural ) I’m here now - Thailand 20 years total a month : 32-38000 baht- its affordable north - you can venture south comfortably twice a year on spare money - realistically- unless you are wealthier head north here your upper middle class on 2k a month

Ok...that medium lifestyle is where I expect to be... I do like Bangkok, but I want my toes in the sand. I'm completely torn on where to locate Pratumnak. Jomtiem, Hua Hin Rawai or even Khanon/Sishon area. I love all motorsports in the Bangkok area but I also want the beach life. Now, when I was there in April '23, I partied like a rock star as I celebrated my 60th birthday all month, met up with CB Media for his birthday and motorsports fun. Toss in Songkran an it's a done deal. At home, I'm more conservative with my partying a live a normal life of work (until just recently, I retired), recreation when I had time. So, I hope to be able keep myself busy there with some skateboarding and hopefully fall onto a Harley to replace the one I'm selling now😢. So, my question is this...throw in a 43 Thai GF w/3 yr. old lil girl from Surin and how bad does this fuck up the equation ? Asking for a friend. 🤘😘🇹🇭

Thing about Thailand to know for westerners (i lived in Thailand for 2 years). Everything from back home is way more expensive. Australian ground beef $10/pound (no USDA beef here). Cheerios $7/small box. Decent mported wine, $40+/bottle. Bailey's Irish $40/ 750ml. Decent Australian steak $60+ in a restaurant. The list goes on. If you want to live cheap, you have to buy Thai food in thai markets. Drink only Thai beer and cheap wine. If you live a really healthy lifestyle maybe you don't buy health insurance and pay per use. Top notch healthcare is cheap. When I was in the US my kid needed a small 10mm cut stitched (actually glued). It was 750USD and saw the doc for about 7 min. In Thailand that would cost 40USD at a private international hospital. I think really good advice is to take a few months and go live there first. See how cheap you can live. See if you even like it. Its Asia, the people and culture are not for everybody and you will be treated like a foreigner and taken advantage of and racism is alive and well, but it is against the farang.

All depends on lifestyle. Gym memberships, buyin a motorbike or car, medical which can get complicated etc. I'm fortunate to have a high level of passive income and financial assets in North America. My wife and I have a monthly budget of 65,000 baht but that's not including medical expenses( where insurance becomes difficult to get the more you use it)and lots of traveling, including international. But I can afford it. Too many guys come over here with not enough income or liquidity and end up out of money as they age. My lifestyle here I could never have back in Vancouver and even if I could it would be at least twice as much. But that's my life. Everybody different. The guy who wrote you on Facebook with his amount of income is dreaming if he thinks he'll buy a condo. Terrible investment in Thailand with poor build quality and tough re-sale. A well-put-together Vlog, I have been traveling to Thailand for approx 15 years, the longest stay was 2 Months, but I went there roughly every 3 - 4 Months, so a lot different than living there. I did notice that eating Western food put the costs up. TBH, other than a new location, why eat what you normally eat at home, I thought eating foreign food was the main reason for travel. Over that time I witnessed a lot of educated idiots, that do stupid sh1t, like not purchasing medical insurance. Certainly, in Pattaya , Bangkok or Phuket you will receive swifter and better medical treatment than at home, provided that you can pay for it, unless you have a Visa Card they will let you die in the admissions area without insurance. I had a friend who had to fly a dead friend home (more expensive than a 1st class fare) because he had no insurance. Enough said.

Entertainment isnt about alcohol in Thailand its about women. Im low end for accommodation . My condo is 9k a month. Be medium for food im guessing. Be eating unhealthy too be on the low budget if you ask me. Health insurance definitely medium. Cant see how you would spend only 3k a month on travel with a bike. My fuel cost alone for my aerox155 is about 9k a month however I do travel 50km a good 3 days a week as I go from bang saray to Pattaya that often. Local travel i dont do these days as ive been everywhere in thailand just about already. However im spending a good 60k at the moment on barfines, girls, alcohol and weed and if you want to really enjoy all this stuff i cant see how you could do much better without dropping days. Admittedly i have a gik who stays with me in bang saray 2 nights a week that costs me 6k just there plus I wine and dine her. But then take 2 or 3 girls extra a week off soi6 on top of that which is another 6-9k a week. I had to stop visiting gogo bars. I dont take these girls because their prices are aimed at tourists but I use to enjoy them alot for the perve and flirt and miss them but they really drain the finances.

i worked and lived in thailand for 4 years and left voluntarily, i wish i could've stayed longer, but yes the cost of living is too high for me. I come from a developed country and expect a certain level of living. Its actually more expensive to live in the high end level in thailand than in my country. The expected pay even though I am an expat is too low for me. Am I being too demanding? I don't think so, I have seen other expats get paid way more than me. I am just unlucky to be working for a crappy company. but even so, as you can see U$5k a month is ridiculous.

I live in Chitlon since 2018: 5K a month is for cheap losers: people here go easily above 10K a month - mostly made by renting tends of studios to silly farangs living in some s*hole in tourist hoods

What’s funny to me is the fact that some people in the comments section believe $2700 is a lot of money these days. I just read in the news that the average cost for a 1 bedroom in Vancouver Canada is now $2980.00, and by the time you paid your rent, you haven’t paid for any utilities etc nor god forbid any food.

yeah I was living on Palm Beach island in Palm Beach Florida about 7 years for that in a small one bedroom. Total living expenses were less than that. Rent was like $1200. $2700 might be cheap in certain parts of new york, california, or hawaii though.

Agreed! Stay in the States! BTW, "prison will reduce your expenses!", so if you need to live on a tight budget - getting incarcerated will get you three squares, a cot, and health care (you'll need it), and you'll make lots of new friends! It's the preferred retirement by many in the crime world! I would recommend staying out of the "SuperMAX" facilities unless you love "time by yourself". (Best part, is EVERYBODY CAN AFFORD IT!!!) I had a few friends that couldn't afford "health care", so they just committed felonies and walked into the police station and said .... I'm here, when do we start?" No need to be homeless. No need to save a bunch of money for retirement .... go on the "Federal Plan", they take care of everything! You don't get a bill for electric, gas. garbage, and they feed you three times a day!!!! (I'm joking of course, please take no offense, I mean no harm).

@Bravefit - Chris' totals are rather high. If you get out of the city, you could find some much cheaper rent for condos or single houses. There are some nice modern-style 3-bedroom houses that you could rent for $500-$600 per month!
