When i asked my instructor years ago about sucker punch and defence against it he replied "awerness is the key but remember that you can't beat a guy who doesn't make a mistake" i didn't quite understand what he meant by that but when i got sucker punched (i don't even know who he was, it came out from nowhere) going down the street i understood his words fully

I've been sucker punched in a bar, was having a cigarette outside came in and saw my sister arguing with some guys went over to find out what was going on then from the side of me out of my line of vision BANG tank of a bloke smacked me. Wasn't knocked out but chipped a tooth and the guy had ran off, majorly pissed me off. Awareness is the main defence 100% I could of been training in martial arts for years but not seeing it coming out of my vision I was fucked and to be honest it could of been worse but now I've learnt a big lesson. Agree, awareness is key, because if you are aware most guys won't attempt the sucker punch. I've seen lots of people get sucker punched, most of the time they are threatened by someone and they turn their back to them to either walk away or talk to their buddies. That's when you're getting a beer bottle to the back of your head. Back away but never turn your back. Saddest part of the sucker punch is that it happens so fast, whoever did it usually gets away with it and does significant damage to the victim.

The definition of a sucker punch, although debatable, is getting hit when you are not expecting it. You can assign blame to the victim, depending on the situation, for not anticipating the assault but that is the gist of it. It boils down to awareness.

Wish I saw this also "Awareness, definitely is the key" . Happened to me but I was standing to the right of the guy I was arguing with and his Huge mate on my right got me... I just remember yelling then next min bang and semi blacked but still crouched over and my reaction was wtf happened and cover my head... He kicked me in the head a few times but lucky i was blocking, I think I was still dazed and blocking was just my natural reaction. Not sure why I couldn't move I was just stunned and never fell down until he tripped me over. I got back up and Just still stood shook and lucky people came over to help otherwise might have been worse.

Sorry man, you’re making every mistake in the book. Never, ever let him get within arms reach without responding and never back up. The moment he approached you in an aggressive manner from that distance you give him one warning. If he doesn’t stop you take him out. Backing up is just emboldening the aggressor and eventually these guys are going to pounce on you.
