I've come back to this story a lot recently (for reasons) and could ask 100 questions about this talk, but I'll go with this: If Esau is the evil villain of this story, so much that Leah was justifiably upset about marrying him then how could anyone see him in David? Also, do you think there's significance in that Jacob didn't defeat the angel so much as the angel (or the mysterious figure) was unable to defeat him?

I think the Tanakh is making a connection between Messiah Son of David and Edom - 1 Samuel 16:12, Isaiah 63:1 etc. when Ben David is revealed, he will be “admonee”. He will come out from Edom. David only had an appearance of his great uncle but not the characteristics.

Shalom🙏Perhaps Jacob was able to wrestle and defeat Esau's guardian angel / Esau ... because he had received the birthright. The battle was possibly for Jacob to integrate this Power ... to believe in himself. To overcome a self limiting belief. The prophets spend hundreds of years (see II Kings) seeking to engage the Kings of ISRAEL to align with the insight of David. Although they were sinful God does not simply give up on the virtue of their tenacity. Modern ISRAEL is the return of the Ten Tribes. We struggle still today to join the two sticks in Ezekiel's hand. When we do, we will lead the way for the world to also heal it's contradictions.

Yaakov did not outwit Esau when Esau sold his Bekhorah. The sale was 100% above board. No trickery was involved there. Yaakov explained the terms of the sale to Esau in total. Esau wanted his Olam HaZeh with no strings attached. The fact that Esau incorrectly thought that he was keeping his Olam HaBa was his own mis-calculation.

The Angel appears again to Manoah in Judges 13.17. They ask him his name too. He responds this time in Judges 13.18 Look up who is described as "wonderful" in the Tanakh in Isaiah. It's the Angel of the Lord. (not Esav's guardian angel)

Esau or the angel of Esau proclaims Israel and the alliance that Jacob promises in the future can both be seen as the establishment of Israel by modern day Esau aka Christendom aka the West aka Europe and America and the alliance between Israel and the West.

There is a well-known principle that "there is no before or after in the Torah", meaning that the Torah sometimes describes events out of chronological order. Yes, we were told previously that Abraham was 175 years old and passed away. However, in the following parasha we are told that Isaac was 60 when he had Jacob and Esau, and since we know that Abraham had Isaac when he was 100, it means that Abraham was obviously still alive when Jacob and Esau were born. The lives of the three patriarchs must have overlapped for 15 years.

Ya’akov had the humility to understand that his and man’s definition of emes is secondary to HaShem’s. Ya’akov Avinu understood that HaShem is the measurement by which emes is measured.
