This part of history is not commonly known in the west so it is a bit difficult to find a very detailed reference in ENG. This video really resonates with me. for most of my life, I never paid attention to politics, but assumed like most people, that the truth was close to what was in the media. I never questioned it, and when I took part in the anti Iraq War demo in London, knowing perfectly well there was no WMD,(and let's be honest, if I did, EVERYBODY did!), yet seeing that an alleged left wing government was taking us to a war the country did not want, I just shrugged it all off, returning to my safe realm of hedonistic partying instead of fighting what I knew was unfairness and lies. Then I moved to Hong Kong 11 years ago. I supported in my heart the Occupy movement and was happy to see HK youth were not the braindead candy crush playing Zombies I had imagined. I didn't dislike the mainland Chinese however, and met so many of them as wonderful people, despite what some of my acquaintances were saying. But everything changed with the HK protests. In some ways, I wish I was still innocent about all that I have learned, and how deep the deception goes. Fact: Han Chinese are the earliest settlers in the Xinjiang region over 2 thousand years ago. A few administration regions were setup by the Han Dynasty in the Xjinjiang region. Buddhism & Taoism flourished on the silk road long before the Uyghurs migrated from the EAST almost a thousand year later. Uyghurs are NOT turks, & they were NOT Muslims when they first settled in the Xinjiang region. Throughout history, Han Chinese never left the Xinjiang region even during the turks invasion because they did not occupy the entire Xinjiang region. Xinjiang was subsequently occupied by the Mongols during the Yuan Dynasty, & then the turks were wiped out by the Manchurians during the Qing Dynasty. Btw the term "East Turkistan" was created by the Russians, NOT the turks. Uyghur is NOT a race, it's a name created to refer to the union of several tribes from a particular area. The word "Uyghur" in Uyghur language literally means UNION!

In conversation, Wahabi seems to imply a more extreme Salafi, or specifically one that supposedly does not make 'takfir' (excommunication) on other Sunnis. So as to not offend the supposedly unproblematic Salafis, sometimes the term "Wahhabi" or "Takfiri" is used instead. However, as Salafi thought has become more mainstreamed into Sunni Islam, there is also an increasing number of Sunnis who will say they "follow the way of the Salaf" while rejecting the Salafi label. In history, from my understanding, Salafi thought began with the writings of Ibn Taymiyyah who was widely discredited by the Sunni 'ulema (grand scholars) of the time. Salafism only became popular with the rise of the House of Saud (Saudi Arabia) fighting the tribes of Arabia, whilst supported by the British.

I am just done with my two-month vancamper travel in Xinjiang. Great food, great people, I mean all of them, no matter Uighur, Kazak, or Han. I can see geniune peace and happiness in their eyes and smiles. As far as I am concerned, people here are more relaxed with their life that people in other inland provinces, except for checkpoints on the road, which made my travel not as easy as in other provinces. But I do know why and I don't have any problem with that.

Erm... multiple wives were/are acceptable in most pre-modern non-Roman-Christianized traditions, including my own (and we're not Muslim by faith). In fact, in my part of the world (Panjab), it was the Muslims who were restricted to a maximum of 4 wives because of their faith, while non-Muslims could marry as many as they wanted - even absurd numbers (e.g. Maharaja Ranjit Singh's 300 wives). The practise seems to have stopped with British laws being introduced/imposed at the local level in the early-20th century, and the Indian constitution (modelled on European laws).

Consider this, I am an Australian and I know with absolute certainty that journalists here in Australia that have spent considerable time in China investigating the Uyghur forced labour and prison camps etc.and found virtually nothing,are frightened to speak out and say anything positive about China is amazing. They are not afraid of any repercussions from China but how their careers would end overnight from repercussions of powerful people here in Australia.Some of these journalists were heavily influenced by our government to return home,who in turn made political mileage of it. I find this to be quite frightening.
