Something without all of the aids and technology other ships have to assist the non-force sensitive. My assumption was that their ships were made nimble and fast enough to make proper use of a Jedis reflexes and perception abilities because any other ship would slow them down... kinda like how professional drivers buy a new car and immediately start removing fuses and turning off things like traction control and ABS.. I just assumed that the hyperspace ring was a cool way of giving hyperspace capabilities to these tiny agile ships. I still think it's a cool and unique idea. I could see it being implemented in some interesting ways, like the ring being autonomous and being able to break off and act as a secondary attack drone, or come to your rescue and attach and quickly jump you out of danger.. or even potentially jump away on it's own as an emergency beacon if your main ship is damaged. Stuff like that... there's a lot of cool stuff you could do with that idea, in my opinion.

I would buy that argument for the shields. They take power continuously while up as well as some space, meaning that there is less power from your fighter's reactor for engines and weapons. However, for a hyperdrive it seems quite possible to shrink them down immensely (see: the fact you can put retrofit them into even basic Ties and N-1s without having to seemingly remove anything important), and you don't need to divert power to them except when you actually want to use it. So yeah, lack of shields is probably to maximize the nimbleness. But the lack of hyperdrive may well be good old palpa.

I think we can make a good argument that fits both the Palpatine and the stripped down high speed theory, note I'm working from true Star Wars as until Disney fixes it's problems the great ideas are lost in the sea of confusion over direction and the bad ideas, so we know that the Sith were working on the political dicay of the Republic, mostly by promoting moral dicay in the Core and isolating the core from the mid and outer rim, we also know that they where isolating the Jedi from the rest of the galaxy, we also know that the Jedi had a gunboat that was much more along the lines of the old Defender-class on steroids from Old Republic during the Stark Hyperspace Wars about 10 to 20 years before Naboo, and that it was decommissioned because it was to much like a war ship for keepers of the peace, so what if Plagus and Sidius manipulated events so that the Jedi were nerfed and the Jedi working within the limits of the constraints placed on them came up with the idea to strip the fighter to basics inorder maximize they're remaining potential

When the Galactic Republic transitioned to the Galactic Empire, there was no mass switch to hyperspace-capable star fighters (even after the Rebellion began deploying hyperspace-capable star fighters to great effect). In the old X-Wing novels, Wedge Antilles noted that the same impetus behind the lack of hyperspace motivators on TIEs accounted for their lack of shields: They (and their pilots) are supposed to be mass deployable but disposable, which was an idea Palpatine stole from the old Sith Empire (dialed up to 11). Anyway, while it had the dual convenience of hampering the Jedi, likely the non-use of star fighter hyperdrives was just a wider part of changing the Republic’s military doctrine.
@m1k3droid3 жыл бұрын
The principle of the actis is to have it as late as nimble as possible and so that it could only be flown by Jedi who were prescient enough to predict when shots are coming at them so they don’t need Shields and they don’t need hyper drives because they’re able to hide if they’re stuck in a system and the added weight would detract from their maneuverability of the craft
@darwinskeeper4213 жыл бұрын
That may be true, and that's probably how the Republic's procurement officers explained the lack of shields and an internal hyperdrive. I think its a lot more likely that Palpatine wanted to leave the Jedi vulnerable. I'm pretty sure that the lack of shields on Jedi starfighters led to quite a few Jedi deaths during the Clone Wars, and tying the Jedi to hyperspace rings would have made escaping Order 66 all the more difficult. I sadly feel the Jedi were somewhat complicit in their own extinction. The Jedi Council should have insisted that all of their craft have shields and integral hyperdrives. Given the dangerous situations a Jedi might be flying into, I would argue that a built in hyperdrive and a shield generator should have been standard equipment on any craft the Jedi would have used.

I always assumed it was a practical thing personally. The rings will be used for hyperspace jumps only so can store more fuel than a typical ship of that size, so assuming a Jedi needs to make multiple jumps, they will have a specifically designed piece of tech to do that. Smaller ships may need to refuel with an onboard hyperdrive so this allows the Jedi to operate in smaller, more manoeuvrable ships in planet and have the ring located at a safe distance if needed. This will give them the freedom of a fighter sized ship and the fuel capacity of a larger vessel all in one. We see when the ships are being transported on Venators, that these rings are not there, as the Venator completes the Hyperspace jumps. Also when the ring is not in use it is powered down so having it thousands of kilometres from a planet in the middle of nowhere would make is basically invisible to anyone looking for it which adds to its security. I don’t think Palpatine went into the minute detail of star fighters. Even though he guided most of the war some things he couldn’t control or manipulate - from a time and energy perspective. Plus having the ring isn’t as big an issue for me given the above.

Actually, this theory makes a lot of sense. Even if your fleeing Jedi escapes his wingmen turned attackers, where can he go? He's trapped in that system, much easier to hunt down and turn into Jedi toast. I think Palpatine manipulated the Jedi into getting a starfighter that couldn't (or it would be very difficult) have a hyperdrive fitted, namely the Actis. I mean, the thing has thin wings, a short fuselage barely big enough for the cockpit and the sublight engines. Where can you put any extras on her? I mean, even fitting an R2 on the Actis is hard with the Lego models (at least to make it look good). On the Delta, I reckon there's more than enough space for a hyperdrive between the two cannons on the forward fuselage. Similarly, on the N-1 there's space between the guns and also behind the R2 socket that's potentially free. The A Wing is quite a blocky fighter and there's a good amount of volume both behind and in front of the cockpit for a hyperdrive. But the Actis is bare bones, there's just nowhere to put it.

Jumping up into space, then making a quick jump, and basically doing random jumps in various directions to finally end up in the interstellar void, and then from there he had to jump elsewhere (Basically, even if that's the main gist of hyperspace travel - a series of jumps down routes clear of mass shadows) - I can imagine just playing what amounts to random hyperspace jump hide-and-seek probably isn't the most fun especially when you run the risk of having hostiles wherever you pop into real space at/the risk of colliding with mass shadows is there. I am fairly sure he has to call upon the Force for help here to get anywhere fast due to how the main hyperspace routes probably were too dangerous to use willynilly.

🤔 . . . I honestly believe that its #1: the tech level of hyperdrives. Sure, its possible that the Jedi Starfighters themselves had pretty small & slow hyperdrives, commonly classified as backup hyperdrives (primary reason for this is “TIE Fighter” (PC): Conflict at Mylok IV). However, #2: I honestly believe that the hyperdrive rings served two purposes which is the obvious hyperspace travel method & that it is its own dedicated starfighter carrier that carries only one starfighter; it acts as a mobile refueling ship & a communications relay; a backup to what Jedi already have in their starfighters & such.

I agree with this theory. Palpatine would definitely go the extra mile to make sure that Order 66 went perfectly. Since the Delta 7 was older, it could’ve been Plagueis that did it. As a prominent banker, he could’ve been able to bribe Kuat or any manufacturer to not include a hyperdrive. Not only were the Jedi ideologically corrupt by the time of Order 66, but their attachment to the Republic meant that they could be reliant on dark money. And a tracker or some damaging feature would be better hidden on a hyperspace ring than the actual fighter, which the Jedi pay more attention to

It makes sense for the Jedi to need nimble and quick starfighters. If you don’t have a hyperdrive, and minimal everything else, you can outrun/outmaneuver everything in existence. Just need to keep the ring hidden after you drop out of hyperspace, which a Jedi should be able to do, being all tactical and whatnot.

Actually it’s wildly impractical. The Jedi operate with very little support in potentially hostile environments. They need the ability to travel interstellar differences and a hyperdrive ring is incredibly stupid in this scenario. Too vulnerable and limiting.

@@4mobius280 Well, the A-Wing did pretty bloody good for being all engine and little else. While yes, it did have a hyperdrive, imagine what it could do by removing that weight. Even if it was only ten percent of the total weight, that’s ten percent less the engine has to move around, which also adds that new excess to the total available power to weight ratio. Now yes, hyperdrive is very useful, however, if you are trying to break through a screening force, being able to outrun anything they can put in your way is far more useful then being able to jump out of the system. I think that hyper rings are the faster option of hyper drive. If you can put a hyper drive on a star fighter, it is heavy and slows the fighter down. Also, it is a small drive with low hyperspace speed. A hyper ring, being huge, give huge speeds in hyperspace. Palatine probably gave hyper rings because of all of the drawbacks in the video, but also to give the Jedi a reason to accept the drawbacks. An overwhelming speed advantage for the small number of Jedi to be able to have almost unnatural ability to respond to every crisis quickly. In the end, the Jedi would be spread out further apart from one another, in more isolated spaces of the galaxy, and in the end... with such speed, they are able to get into trouble faster than they could ever hope to get out. Just as planned.
@garkon82423 жыл бұрын
I like the idea of Palpatine planing this all out. Without Hyperdrive the Jedi are screwed during Order 66, a simple lockdown command could have shut all available rings down. I fits well with my head canon that Palpatine in secret had his hands behind a lot of design processes for the Republic Army/Navy and the transition into the Galactic Empire. Out of universe the Old Republic/Sith Empire Era was flashed out later, which lead to the Sith Empire being very simmilar to the Galactic Empire in terms of structur and ranking system. In my head i turned that around to Palpatine modeling his Empire after the old Sith Empire and even having some influence over the Ship design, as i.e. Venators and Star Destroyers design wise are somewhat close to the Harrower Dreadnoughts used by the old Sith Empire.

That theory is pretty solid. In the Clone Wars show when Cad Bane stole a V-19 Torrent and its hyper drive ring the command staff of the Venator tried to disable it. It's almost like those rings were an "added" security feature to prevent easy escapes.
@TerLoki3 жыл бұрын
Honestly this feels like a situation where both theories are correct and complimentary to each other. You've said yourself in other episodes that Jedi liked their fighters to be stripped down and rely on minimal systems, preferring to use the Force to help them fly the ship. Palpatine would have known about this and could then leverage it to persuade the suppliers to the Jedi Council and designers for other systems relating to their starfighters, and even the Jedi themselves, that an integrated hyperdrive was not necessary. Also, even outside of the GAR and before the Clone Wars, a Jedi's stafighter might in some way be like their lightsaber: A personal piece of equipment tied to the individual Jedi. In that case it would be helpful for them to have a separate hyperdirve ring that they could remotely activate or deactivate, as an integrated hyperdrive means that all a potential thief would have to do is hop in the fighter and fly off. A separate hyperdrive ring could be shut down more easily or simply hidden to prevent someone from running off with a Jedi's ship. Just my own theory, but it would certainly make some sense for Jedi off on individual missions in far-flung hostile regions in that sense.

The Needle fighter, developed in the post-Endor era had probably the smallest fighter sized hyperdrive seeing as the whole fighter was only a couple meters in length. Yes this was maybe 40 or so years after the Clone Wars but it does show that a dedicated research and development program could’ve developed it 4 the Jedi. Plus, relying on hyperspace rings, in addition to the facts u mentioned in the video, increases the overall per unit cost possibly way more than one with an integrated hyperdrive, thus making it unattractive to “bean counters.” Of course, one of the reasons y the Empire was incredibly reluctant to outfit Ties with hyper drives was the supposed costs associated with adding the various systems to the fighter… More importantly, I think I read somewhere that the reason 4 the lack of hyper drives (and shields as well iirc) on Jedi fighters was the same main reason that the Empire didn’t mount them on Ties: to make the fighter as light and therefore as fast and agile as possible. The high speed and agility of Jedi fighters were the reason y so few were used outside of the order, as few had the reflexes necessary to control such a craft

My question would be how much influence did Palpatine have over the development of the Delta 7? Cause if the ship was developed in peacetime, id imagine it would look pretty suspicious if the office of the supreme chancellor was meddling with internal jedi affairs presuming the jedi had little to no affiliation with the republic navy. Also, as you pointed out the starfighters lacked shields, which goes to show how dedicated the designers were to being light and nimble. But still a great theory!

It is also worth noting that with Anakin under his thumb, it would have been easy to convince the premier starfighter pilots among the Jedi that this was the correct course by going through Anakin. Additionally, literally all the Separatist lightsaber wielding commanders used hyperdrive equipped small craft to escape capture several times since the Jedi couldn’t directly pursue them in their own starfighters. This prevented Separatist defeats from snowballing into a short war.

I remember a theory someone had way back when before Disney came in and started to make new canon that compact hyperdrives that could be used on a starfighter were not around during the days before the Clone Wars and into the war itself. This came about after the background for the old version of the Cloakshape Fighter and that it needed a special sled to allow it to go to hyperspace. Similar to the Hyperspace Rings we see in Episode Two. Of course, like Eck there is a couple holes in the theory mainly with the mentioned N1 Fighter sporting a hyperdrive. However as far as I know it was only said to have a hyperdrive in secondary material basically the Starfighter series of video games and some of the background material including its entry in the The New Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels. It was never send to have a Hyperdrive in Episode One itself and even in Episode Two the escorting N1s of Padma's starship could have been locked down on the starship's starfighter refueling docks while at hyperspace. Or it could be simply a new recent thing introduced and the N1 Hyperdrive was only short range as a result of it being a newfangled piece of tech. Hence, the need for those refueling docks on the J-Type Barge Padme used at the beginning of Episode Two. Shrug. It was only when the ARC-170 heavy starfighter was first being developed during the middle of the Clone Wars that saw the needed research and development into viable compact hyperdrives being a major thing. Again. There is of course the Y-Wing but we are only shown it sporting a hyperdrive in the Clone Wars cartoon. That is the only thing I cannot explain outside of it using similar hyperdrive tech to that of the N-1 and it being a short-range hyperspace capable bomber. Shrug. Anyways. It was just an interesting theory someone had back in the days before Disney came along. It was an interesting idea all around in my opinion and one that I liked for it would be an interesting bit of lore to add to the Star Wars Galaxy. Since outside of some things there wasn't really any progression of tech over the years. It would also show the accleration of research and development of new tech during wartime was a thing with Star Wars. That said. I do happen to like Eck's theory here for it does make sense and I can totally see the Future Emperor actually doing something like this to the Jedi.

One big thing though, we know that while the N-1 Starfighter can house and run a hyperdrive, the very slim form factor which both classes of Jedi Starfighter were (The later in particular) meant that even with a hyperdrive was strapped on/in. The amount of fuel for distance would still be a heavily limiting factor. For example, I can't remember the exact source, but N-1's that had hyperdrives could only jump several systems before a point of no return or requiring refueling at any point past that. A Jedi Starfighter with a hyperdrive would give a jedi a better chance at getting away, but without the range that a hyperdrive ring allows they wouldn't get far enough away to hide very effectively.

Good points . IMO this would be for several reasons . 1) Dont need hyperdrive in combat and this is a fighter . 2) It was specifically built for the Jedi which "could" mean the controls/maneuvering wiring was such as it made hyperdrive incompatible . As you pointed out , this would greatly limit the distance capability limiting their effectiveness .... but if Palpatine went through the planning of order 66 part of the process would have been the clean-up and what better way to limit the Jedi ability to flee Order 66 than to issue them a fighter with NO legs ? It makes sense to me .... Does that make me a Sith ? lol

Also, would it not be cheaper to build multipurpose starfighters rather than building three different types?
@angrycotchnillollin47583 жыл бұрын
While it may be cheaper to produce a multipurpose fighter, I think the idea (in universe anyway) is something similar to having different tanks with different configurations in WW2. Example; you could have a single squad of multipurpose fighters to use in a battle, but giving a squad orders for all kinds of different roles can be tiring--and too much to think about, whereas multiple squads of ships, each with a defined purpose can be tasked with several objectives separately, and have less worry of overworking the squadron commanders. TL;DR: Multiple specialized ships put less strain on their crews, while a true multipurpose ship can accomplish more, at the cost of crew fatigue.

US Naval doctrine means a ship should be multipurpose with regards to anti air and anti sub warfare, while European doctrine means that ships should be optimised with one role and capable of nothing more than self defence. It means two Arleigh Burke class destroyers have inferior capabilities to say, a British type 45 destroyer or a Franco-Italian Horizon class frigate in the air defence role, and say, a British 23 frigate or a Franco Italian Bergemini class frigate, at at slightly higher cost

My thoughts on the detachable hyperdrives was an option to have best of both worlds craft, having Faster hyperdrives for smaller vessel so that the vessel detached could be made smaller and more maneuverable and harder to target and hit while detached, but then still have a faster hyperdrive to also be able to traverse long distances at increased rates. I.e. adding a faster class 0.9 fitted on the ring, but only a class 1.X+ would fit in the craft directly at the same size, that would also eat into maneuverability and energy consumption, taking away from shields and weapons payload etc...., but adding a class 0.9 in the vehicle directly increased the size and power requirements making them slower and less maneuverable in combat. basically adding more to the ship directly takes away from attack capabilities but adds in long range capabilities, So the ring was a method to have a fast close quarters combat vehicle like a tie fighter while detached, but also have the ability to connect to a faster hyperdrive as needed when not engaged in close quarters fleet battles, as the Jedi used the force while flying across the battle to out maneuver opponents, so the lighter more nimble craft would be superior in engagements, then have an option to reconnect to a ring drive for long distance travel and rapid relocation to outrun fleets with known trajectories.

Another point in my eyes is, to find that freaking ring in - you know, space - you need to have some kind of beacon or tracker. Which makes it very esay to find by just catching on to the signal and to either destroy or to capture it back, or even to lay another trap for the Jedi if he wants to get out of system and is especially good at hiding.

TLDR Version: It's because the Jedi or any major military weren't the target purchasers, individual planetary armed forces were. The main reason for this is the Delta 7's (and their later models) were suppose to be brought by an individual planet's armed forces for space superiority around the planet. A hyperdrive was surplus to this requirement, thus the hyperdrive ring being an 'optional' extra. Kind of how car manufacturers and real life military vehicle manufacturers do exactly the same thing. The Abrams tanks sold to Egypt for example had 'optional extras' and Vickers in their heyday did the same too. A closer real life example would be Propeller based Military Aircraft being sold with drop tanks or a variety of different fuel tank sizes. The Jedi required fighters in similar numbers to an individual planetary force. Remember by the clone wars period, there wasn't that many Jedi and they simply brought these craft for their performance (Plus there is a two seater training model which is perfect for training Padwans). Because of the relatively low amount needed they were seen as being semi-bespoke purchases and they didn't mind getting the hyperdrive rings as an extra. The Jedi orders procurement process was totally in control of this decision and it was very little to do with outside influences.

I'm not sure if I remember right, but it seems to me that TIE fighters not haveing hyperdrive also helps prevent desertion from pilots. Personally while I admit that the hyperspace ring is cool as heck the only reason a one starfighter carrier like that would work is if there is a mismatch between the rings and the fighters. Especially if the hyperspace communication and propulsion are so expensive (what is the jedi budget anyway) that a few deltas have to share. I've also been interested in the hyperspace ballast mentioned on the things it would be pretty neat if the technology could be modified to move a squad especially if they don't have to be connected to the drive

@EckhartsLadder I think there is a more mundane reason beyond Palpatine's grand design or technical limitation. Hubris, or Pride. Not in the Jedi but the ship designers. I remember reading in I think the Phantom Menace art book that they explain the reason why Clone Wars era ships look the way they do rather than the Imperial era, is alot of ships are hand crafted, personally designed and allowed for "artistic expression" by the designer, not the carbon copy, factory produced, stamped out from a mold type construction of later ships. I think the use of hyperspace rings is an artistic expression designed by ship designers who did so in an era of long standing peace in the republic. These starfighters were not designed with War in mind, they were designed with Peace in mind. Much like how the Enterprise D is designed to host families, and is designed more around comfort and hosting dinner parties for visiting dignataries than the original enterprise which was a much more "militaristic" vessel, few comforts, cruising around for x number of years before refit and supply, and built with conflict in mind. Why? The Klingons, the Federation was in active conflict with the Klingons, and thus designed their ships with a more combat focus. Fast forward to the TNG era and the ships were designed as KEEPERS of the peace not creators of the peace that their predecessors were, which is why they were essentially caught with their pants down when the Dominion showed up, and the Defiant type vessels, which was a purely combat focused vessel was considered unheard of. The same with The Republic and the Clone Wars. The CW era ships were designed by people coming off of an era of peace, that's why the star fighters are at least somewhat capable of defending themselves but looking at how they are designed, the pew-pew lasers are probably good for small engagements where the pilot just needs to defend themselves, these ships were not designed with WAR in mind. This is why the Clone troopers ships had guns six ways from Sunday, and were starkly different in design, simple, boxy, mass producible and guns all over. This design mandate continued as the Empire expanded, fighting the indigenous people's of various star systems to subjugate them, and as freer people moved into places like Hutt space to get away from the empire, why those ships retain the boxy mass produced feel, combined with the kit bash, jury rig feel. because those people not having access to Imperial controlled ship yards but still needing to defend themselves in what is otherwise lawless space. So the Jedi Starfighters using hyperdrive rings was most likely an aesthetic choice on part of the designer. Because you are right, it is WHOLLY impracticable from a tactical standpoint. Which means the designs are hand-me-downs from an era of more "Artistic Pursuits."

I like the theory. I don't know if Palpatine necessarily planned it, or just took advantage as a senator and later chancellor to influence the design choices to impose additional limitations to the Jedi. It makes strategic sense. It's worth noting Jedi before the Clone Wars were mostly police and diplomatic negotiators. The using of the rings could indicate an intention to stay until the situation resolves or a willingness to open oneself to a vulnerability during a negotiation as a sign of trust. That said however, Epsiode 1 the ship the Jedi take to Naboo is a Senate transport iirc instead of the single seat craft. I don't know if what was SOP or even when the jedi single seat craft were introduced. It's likewise worth pointing out the orbiting ring could also act as a private satellite to transmit any transmissions across the galaxy, but honestly, I have no idea how FTL communication occurs in Star Wars. A private satellite could prove useful in certain tactical situations. Likewise if a system was going to be hostile they'd attack the ring first to deny escape and a Jedi would have more time to react to survive. To me the rings launchers are 2 things, a rule of cool, and maybe a reference to less refined or equipped starcraft in the era before the OT. For the Rule of cool, I'm reminded in Epsiode 2, Dooku uses a craft that also has a 2 stage function. I'm just brainstorming though. I like your theory, it adds to the complexity of Sidious' plan or his ability to turn every small thi g to his advantage.
