Exactly, not to mention the media running with the rumor that Jordan got his dad killed. THey were acting like Mike was done after the 95 loss to Orlando. None of them know about Tragic Magic? Magic was getting booed in LA. The Celtics might have been the 2nd most hated team behind the Bad Boys. I swear people want to rewrite narratives to make it seem like its been so unfair to LeBron and he's the only one who gets hate or pressure. GTFOH And he's talking about game winners-they have iconic game winners in THE FINALS. LeBron was on the floor watching his teammates hit the biggest Finals game winners/clutch shots.

One book. Bron has dedicated paid haters. Remember what happened to Iverson for saying he wanted to play MJ 1v1 and beat him? They tried to black ball him. Jordan had waaaaay too much power. Bron is doing this while being a good father and getting college kids paid producing motivational content having his bid represent and get players paid. Skip literally making money off that Jordan feeling.

Jordan was getting criticized by the media every season before he won his first championship. Because of the type of players Bird and Magic was. The media was saying Jordan couldn't win a championship while winning the scoring title. That drove Jordan to prove them wrong. After Jordan started to win championships the media shut up because the media never owns up to their mistakes. They just started kissing his a$$.

Gil is right about just hearing MJ's name back in the day. I graduated HS in 1990, got Sports Illustrated delivered weekly to my mailbox throughout the 80s and 90s. Even reading "Michael Jordan" in print within the SI articles boosted your mood. For hoop heads, the closest thing is probably the psychological phenomenon that the Beatles or Elvis had on teenage girls. I actuality saw MJ play in a preseason game against the Wizards for my 18th birthday in 1989. Even that environment was electric. We were right behind the Bulls bench. Other than some pretty lady who kept trying to get Scottie Pippen's attention, all eyes were on Jordan. If he turned and smiled toward your section hundreds of people lit up. You could feel the energy in the air shift every time he touched the ball.

But he was wrong about Journalist gettting fired if the criticized MJ! I don't remember Sam Smith getting fired from the Chicago Tribune after he wrote the Jordan Rules
@edtechspecialist
@edtechspecialist 5 ай бұрын
@@sonnywoods6846 Yeah, you're right. Journalists who critiqued MJ for gambling during the '93 playoffs against the Knicks were also not fired. In general, I do think MJ held sway over the media. They swooned over him in the mid- to late-80s and early 90s. To build off of Gil's point, it's partly the media landscape has changed, but it's mostly that Jordan was photogenic, had a winning smile, could speak effortlessly and engagingly in interviews and commercials, and he was visually majestic on the basketball court. He had God-given gifts that added up to a marketing dream right when Bird and Magic were on the tail end of their careers. It was a perfect storm. So, as far as the media goes: It was like the Babe Ruth phenomenon. The media wrote glorious stories touting the heroics of the supernatural athlete to sell more papers, and all the athlete had to do was keep performing godlike feats in their sport. Everybody wins. Jordan sold newspapers and magazines, so journalists were keen on putting him on their cover. To your point: MJ soured on SI when they wrote that one "Bag It, Michael!" piece about his struggles in baseball and would not speak to them for years, so there is some basis to Gil's assertion, but he was exaggerating.

Jordan was the ultimate symbol of success because he didn't argue against the naysayers, he just took the criticism and then proved them wrong. Every. Single. Time. The media first criticized him for being a ball hog while comparing him to Magic, he played PG for a stretch and notched triple doubles. Media then said all he could do was score and not play defense, he won DPOY and got 200 steals and 100 blocks for 2 seasons. Media then said Jordan couldn't win rings, and he won one. They said MJ couldn't shoot 3s and he shot 6 in against Portland in the NBA finals in the first half. Media still said Magic and Bird were better, so he got a 3-peat cause neither of Magic or Bird could do it. When he returned from retirement, media said he was too old. And he came back with the best record ever in the NBA and another 3-peat. At every single turn, MJ proved the media wrong. It is nuts to be able to grind at a perceived weakness and make it a strength and then to do it multiple times? That's insanity. It's not just what he did, but how he did it that made Jordan different. Lebron is a special athlete and deserves all the respect. It is unfair the amount of hate he gets for what? Being in the conversation for the greatest of all time?

@LucianDevine
@LucianDevine 5 ай бұрын
@@troyjohnson9123 Versus Bron's 2 bubble rings? MJ never lost a finals, and never even saw a game 7 in those finals. Even if you want to call the era weak, you have to remember that MJ was always there to take them over the top, even in the flu game. Bron never would have been able to do what MJ did in that flu game, but I'd bet that MJ could do whatever Lebron did in whichever finals performance you want to name. MJ just wanted it more. He stuck with the Bulls, despite the losses, through the first 3-peat, and went back to them for the 2nd 3-peat. Lebron had to bail on the heat to win his first chip, taking the easy way out. So even if you claim that this era is better, the fact that he took the easy way out with his super teams negates that, and don't even get me started on the rules differences. MJ getting put on the floor every time he drove to the basket in his early years, or getting effectively punched in the stomach every time he drove. Did he cry, stay down, or whine to the refs? No, he got up after every hard foul and played his game. Compare that to Lebron flopping, milking every medium hard foul for all it was worth, etc.

Every time Jordan played, even if it was vs the worst team in the league it felt like that. And once you got to the playoffs, multiply that feeling by 10 again. I think it's time for people to just take MJ out the equation in these comparison and put him to the side because MJ is literally the standard people use in all these comparisons on who is the greatest. Just put MJ on the side and worry about everyone else. Lebron can score 50K and still won't receive the same reverence people have for MJ. You have to have seen Michael Jordan in real time as a player to fully understand. Michael Jordan, before the internet, was more famous than Lebron James is now. What Michael Jordan didin basketball is what Michael Jackson did in music. Their level of excellence and achievement set the bar high in their respective fields and both men transcended their fields and became part of American culture in a way Lebron James will never be. Michael Jordan set the standard so high people bumped the great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar out the way.

Even saying that he is chasing the ghost from chicago (that would never happen 😂) All of Bronsexual keep on changing narrative that "they are done with 90's", "mj playing with plumbers", to questioning MJ achievements and some stuff to discredit MJ. TBH, ALL Bronsexuals including his FGOAT James FOR M.E. think that they are the one that cannot leave MJ to their F mouth 😂😂😂 it kills and eat them to their CORE. People will say a player's shoes doesn't matter, but that player's influence to the culture is why people buy them in the first place. Growing up I wanted all the Jordans for casual wear and all the Kobes to play ball. There is a reason why everyone wanted to be "Like Mike" on and off the court. Don't forget, people used to kill/steal/rob just for a pair of Jordans. In classrooms playing paper-ball basketball everyone saying "KOBE!" with every shot. We used to witness greatness with our own eyes but nowadays people just see 1 minute long edited tik-toks and believe the narratives they see. With algorithms on social media, once you like a video pushing a certain narrative that is all your feed will show so that's what they will continue to believe.

Y’all are so dumb and don’t even understand why Jordan shoes got popular. It was more than Jordan it was apart of hip hop culture. Kids that wear Jordan’s now don’t even know who he is. They could care less about his career or how many rings he got. People only wear Jordans because it’s a popular shoe in our culture not because they like Jordan the player. I saw this video online and they asked this white girl who was wearing Jordan’s if she knew how he looked and she said no. It’s only us older people who have an emotional connection to his shoes. And wanted to be like Jordan on the court. None of that has anything to do with basketball.

The next great in the GoaT discussion is probably already born and in the NBA. It was Wemby's fault that France lost to Team USA. But MJ, Kobe and LeBron all needed to mature for years before they started winning chips. The CP3-move to the Spurs will hinder Wemby's development, and probably prevent Wemby from reaching his full potential. But Wemby is already a top-10 player in the league, so he indeed is a prodigy. The only question is health, and unfortunately Popovich is too old at this point to give any sensible advice to Wemby.
