I know this is a comedy channel, but this is 100% spot-on. The idea that we need to determine our own tax liability is especially devious when coupled with the concept of tax withholding. It's our responsibility to determine how much money was excessively taken from OUR PAYCHECKS... and if we screw up on our Form 1040, the government gets to keep money that was never theirs to begin with. Not to mention the fact that we don't get a penny of interest on any money that gets refunded to us.

Any country is run by those who lobby. If you're too lazy to throw a few bucks every now and then towards a lobbying group that fights for your rights, you deserve the fact that you have no rights. The average office complex could successfully lobby their city government for the price of nice cup of coffee a year. A large town could successfully lobby their state government at that rate, and a mid-sized state doing the same thing would provide enough funding to elect whoever they want to the presidency. You don't get rights by doing nothing.
@joebankman48096 жыл бұрын
I've spent years working on simplified filing. This is a terrific short introduction to the issue. Most of the problems viewers have pointed out have work-arounds. For example, if we think the government doesn't know something relevant to a tax return (such as charitable deductions), the government could still start the ball rolling by telling you what it has already collected on you, and putting that information on the right line in usable digital form. You'd just add what needs to be added, and hit "calculate." Cash income is generally not reported one way or another, but we could probably change the form to increase reporting here. Viewers who want more information could google ReadyReturn, look at the Warren Bill, Google my name and filing etc.

In the Netherlands, this Return Free Filing has been introduced a few years ago. The first year they were messing numbers up, so you had to double check. But the following year (and so on) are spot on. Filiing tax returns takes about 10 minutes. Not the 5 as Adam suggests.

This video is literally about how capitalism overpowers the government to steal your money. How can you blame the government when this is so clearly the fault of capitalism?
@drew91147 жыл бұрын
Overpowers? Clearly? The government has more power than any corporation could ever hope to have. They are supposed to be the regulator. If a child asks their parent if they can have candy for dinner and the parent says yes, do you fault the child or the parent? Corporations are just economic actors acting in their own best interest. For that matter, so are politicians, so the analogy would be more correct if the parent was also a child, in which case the problem is this child having so much power than other children can gain advantages over each other by colluding with the overpowered parent-child.

My wife and I once filed our taxes online and got an estimate back on how much the government owed us. Shortly after we received our tax refund in the mail, the IRS sent us a letter saying there was a mistake that had been made on our end and we owed them a total of $77. I was about half way through my accounting degree at the time and knew there were certain things that I might not be understanding so I called a guy in my neighborhood who did taxes professionally. After taking a look at my numbers, he affirmed that we did indeed owe the IRS $77. BUT what they failed to mention is that the IRS STILL OWED US about $3500. The IRS is full of crap.

Taxes are actually insanely easy if you don't have enough deductions to make the deductable rate lower. The question remains of who is worse: A company throwing its weight around through lobbying to extort whatever portion of the public is too foolish to rely on them, or the inefficiency of government bureaucracy. Honestly they're both shit and the correct answer is "simplify the tax code."
@heckingbamboozled809711 ай бұрын
The government already has all the information on file. All you would have to do is list your deductions when they send you the mail. That's by far the better solution, and simplifying the tax code would literally include return free filing. You people are so god damn stupid it hurts

I love this show, not just because of the hard facts that people just don't seem to understand but also because it gets me interested in learning more about how I can make the system work better...See the hard part isn't that the show itself doesn't go out of the way to tell me how to make it work, it's that I have to wait until November each year to hopefully vote in somebody or something that will help...inch by inch. See the problem here folks? It's not that you don't get the info on what to do but that not enough of us are doing the research ourselves or going out to try and fix this locally so we can move up the ladder...or voting for Bernie Sanders like initiatives from the top down.

Here the UK, we have this thing called PAYE (Pay As You Earn). This means that your employer does your taxes, so when you get your payslip it just shows you your pay, your taxes, and what you actually get paid after taxes. However, if you are self-employed you have to do your taxes. I'm pretty sure in most countries the government does your taxes. Also, in the USA, sales tax is not included in the label price, and it is different in different states, whereas in Europe at least, VAT is included in the label price and it isn't charged on "essentials", although what the government calls essentials is questionable.
