Okay guys in this video I talk about the real reason The Lost World: Jurassic Park cut this character out of the film. Dr. Thorne is someone who plays a major role in Michael Crichton's book, yet his name is never mentioned in the Steven Spielberg movie. Well we actually STILL made a big impact on the Jurassic Park sequel with some noteworthy storyboards proving his worth to back it up. Jeff Goldblum and the Tyrannosaurus Rex family might be the main stars of The Lost World...but Eddie Carr needs to be respected as well! Hope you all enjoy! :D

There is something to consider, both novels became "best sellers" at the time, and the second definitely got picked up after the success of the first movie... Changing the names would be a good thing after changing so much the story. Iconic deaths and scenes wouldn't be expected since they are not the same people, and it would definitely give more surprising and unexpected moments because of the element of surprise... Being a huge fan of the novel, I think the movie that we got would be the more interesting story to tell in the big screen, the novel is by far one of my favorite stories... However, it is science heavy in narration, and that might not be as interesting than hunters capturing dinos... Both are great and I'm glad we have both! But I would have loved some scenes that are iconic in the novels to be adapted in the big screen

I like how the expectations were flipped for a few minor characters. In the film, Eddie was quite whiny and you’d think he’d die like a wuss, but he ends up being very courageous and securing an “honourable” death. Dieter, contrastingly, is your quintessential nasty tough guy, but dies like kind of a snivelling coward. When it comes to lesser characters, the good and the bad are not separated by whether they die or not, it’s HOW they die that matters. This is part of the reason why Zara’s death in JW caused such a stir for some.

In the movie, Malcolm actually finds Thornes satellite phone made for Sarah, in her back pack. Remember; it was rather small in size for the year 1997? ;) Arby makes a point out of it's size, back in the workshop, in the novel.

Loved Thorne in the book, and felt he was positioned to be a possible stand-in/replacement for Malcolm if Goldblum didn't want to return. It explains why Thorne dealt so heavily with philosophy leaning towards his engineering background as opposed to Malcolm who is philosophically leaning towards his background in math & statistics. Thorne also has the last say in the book and gives one hell of a speech about knowledge & science being like a story mankind tells itself. Absolutely beautiful. The character left an impression on me as I had to actually do "Thorny Questions" in college, a variation of it at least, that did in fact include the 'paper chair' problem. So when I see The Lost World movie and Malcolm is talking to Eddie in that facility where they're still building the RV, I like to pretend that the place is actually Thorne Mobile Field Systems and he's in the background somewhere chewing out an intern who's never welded before.

OMG Klayton thank you i've wondered since i was 9 why Eddie and Nick's action figures looked so different to the actors mystery solved. Also i do prefer tlwjp film to the novel mainly due to the DX disease being kind of a downer, although i wish they kept the bike chase and carno village scenes in the film and the whole sonic gun thing with biosyn was kinda cheesy although i would have prefered the hunters to be biosyn instead of ingen.

I think combining the characters is a good idea for film here. In a novel you can spend a lot more time with the members of a large cast, which a film can't afford to do unless Peter Jackson is directing it. Merging characters like that allows you to focus on the main focal characters, like Grand, Muldoon and Hammond in the first film or Malcom, Tembo and Ludlow in the second. This carries through to the sequels as well, which have similarly-sized casts to the novel-sourced films.

I actually read Throne with the voice of Pete Postlethwaite when I first read The Lost World. I thought the voice fit well with his mannerisms. I also gave Liev Shreiber’s voice to Richard Levine, as the actor played in another Crichton adaptation, “The Sphere,” while Vince Vaughn went to Eddie.

Honestly, I would have loved to see the book more faithfully adapted. It is far more witty and a lot scarier. The night at the small kiosk in the workers village, Sarah trying to restart the Explorer after the rain and so on. It was also much funnier. The male Rex sitting down on the Explorer, Levine trying to fix the camera at the Rex next and being spooked by Thorne. Also the kids were leagues better than Kelly in the movie.

I'm ok with what they ultimately decided, there's really no reason they needed to have all the seperate characters from the novel. I do wish they'd adapted some more of the action set pieces from the novel though, the raptor motorbike chase and the carnotaurus attack at the workers village would have made for excellent scenes.

I liked the book way more and would've rather they would've done it more justice. The movie wouldn't be so bad if they would've left the whole San Diego thing out of it and gave the island more spotlight. Longer dino round up longer time trying to get off the island. Things like that. Oh and fix Ian's daughter and bring back her school friend.

It would've been cool seeing Thorne in TLW, although I do like Eddie Carr as he is in TLW. He was basically Eddie and Thorne from the novel amalgamated into one character. I figure probably to keep costs down is why they combined them into one character. If Thorne had been in TLW movie as his own character, I envisioned Tommy Lee Jones as him, the way he was described in the novel. TLJ is obviously far too old for such a role now but back in the 90s he would've been great for Thorne.

Not to mention how he looked after Kelly and Arby like a father-figure throughout the novel, even going as far as to rescue Arby from the cage despite the odds being that he wouldn't have survived being rolled around by the raptors. Even if that trope was reused from the first novel, it still spoke about his character.

Ever since I was a child I've always like the books 100x better. Don't get me wrong, I love all the movies (even 3) but it'd be a dream come true to get movies actual fully faithful to the books.

What if they will use him in movies after Jurassic World 3 ? Or for Jurassic Park Live-Action Reality Show?

I am a pretty hardcore unaltered book version person for the Lost World. I absolutely adore the novel and think that the movie just doesn’t really live up to what I wanted from a “Lost World” movie. The movie is still good, just kinda a let down when compared to the novel for me. I guess it kinda goes back to that whole “the book is better than the movie” kinda thing because in the end stuff just has to get cut and changed, as well as people want to put their own spin/fingerprints on their version. Still, I really wish I could’ve seen Dr. Thorne on the big screen

While I did enjoy JP2 and thought the trailers were really bitchin'.... I found that one part of the scene where they get twisted and pushed over the cliff to be implausible. As someone whose designed an articulated bus concept, the articulation joint is somewhat my area of expertise. In the scene after the rear trailer gets rolled over and pushed off the edge and Eddy attempts to rescue them, him passing them the rope and being able to see them would in reality not be possible as the bellows (accordion sleeve) was twisted shut. Same scenario also goes for when after Eddy is eaten by the Rexes and the trailers fall around Malcolm, Sarah and Nick... them holding onto the rope while the trailers go down around them would have also not been possible for the same reason I noted above about the sleeve being twisted shut from the roll over. Good scene nonetheless but completely implausible.

@joshua ashleynot sure why, but you asked your question in my comment instead of writing your own question.... As for Dr's Grant and Sattler... no idea. Klayton might know.

I like both stories. When they inevitably reboot Jurassic Park though I would prefer the stories and characters to be darker and more fairhful to the books. I'd also want the dinosaurs being more faithful to reality with feathers and stuff.

How does the Juttson character fit into this? He struck me as the script's answer to Levine to an extent.
