I miss those days, too! At family gatherings, especially around Thanksgiving and Christmas, dad, his dad and/or mom’s dad and my uncles would sit at the table and play dominoes, smoke, and drink coffee. In some cases, Schlitz beer, back when it was decent beer. Mom and grandma prepared the meals, cleaned up the plates, did dishes, and anything else related to the kitchen. The kids were inside to eat or played outside.

The Olympics were intended to publically worship and exalt the human body, hence why the athletes were naked while performing feats designed to showcase strength, agility, speed, and power in homage to the gods/goddesses. The Greek empire worshipped the human form.

I'm conflicted. As a Christian, I know we are here to be salt and light and to live as an examples but I sure do wish I could run away to a deserted island away from all this insanity and worldly display..... but that's clearly not what the Lord want's us to do. As the book of James reminds me 1:2-4 , "Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing." ..... But it sure is a challenge to live up to.

As a Kenyan christian did we watch the opening ceremony? Not necessarily, but the country was waiiting for track and field events where countless of our athletes comes from poor backgrounds, have strong christian faith and work extremmly hard to be at the olympics- so whats wrong with that? As christians we can appreciate and give God glory through the good side of olympics, Even apostle paul drew lessons from the ancient Roman olympics.

The ancient olympics were Greek, not Roman. The track and field sports have Greek origins. Roman games did involve some races but mostly just involved a lot of death.

The opening ceremony is actually when the priestsess at the temple of Hera says her prayer to Apollo and Zeus before lighting the torch that's supposed to go to the host city. It's still pagan like it's been since 776bc.

I can't watch this. I don't think I've ever really watched the Olympics. It feels so bread and circus in Rome before the fall. oh how I use to love watching womens gymnastics back in the day. Women were feminine and carried themselves like ladies. I didnt watch the olympics this year because of the opening ceremony mockery. But even so I am not impressed with gold medals or spending a life time to earn one, wear one, or place one on a trophy shelf. Its all about self, ugh.....What really gets my goat are those women volleyball outfits, yikes. Is it really necessary to dress like that to play vollyball? Lord come soon! I mean, the Olympics originated in Greek pagan culture. Christianity never had anything to do with these games to honor the pagan deities (who were very unGodly) and which celebrated the classic Greek ideals of beauty (male physique). The original Olympians participated nude. And we know the Greeks condoned homosexual relationships in their culture. While I don't disagree with the main argument--that the Olympics reflect the current cultural "values" and the worldview and ideology underlying those, using the Olympics as an example of societal decadence and the regression from Christendom (so called) is not an especially strong one, due to its origins. Christ never had any part in these games, just as He never had any part in Saturnalia festivities.

I know what I’m tired of… the buzzword “deconstruction”. Other than the men blatantly pretending to be women, most of these people want to fairly compete. Narcissistic people are definitely on the uptick these days, but there were also some very genuine Christian athletes who give the glory to God. Was that mentioned? If a woman is athletic and wants to play rugby, or lift weights, why should I care?? It’s an amoral thing. Sometimes these seem a bit legalistic in my humble opinion.

People always use the term "legalistic" when the bible says something they don't want to follow or don't agree with. Do you believe God laid out the roles for men and women in scripture or not? If not, you're in defiance of the Word. If so, scripture very clears outlines that women have roles and should not be acting masculine or behaving like men, just as men should not act feminie or behave like women. Women are not to engage in this kind of physical competition.

Since when was the Olympics about promoting Christian values? I remember Olga Korbut and Nadia Comaneci raising the bar in women's gymnastics, which was really girl's gymnastics because they were finished by 18. Today's female gymnasts compete well into their 20s and even early 30s. I also remember how the women from the Soviet bloc, especially East Germany, looked and dominated the track and field events.

Since I was born,lived,and raised where the next summer games will be I'm a little concerned about what will be in the opening and closing ceremonies. There's so many neutral things they can showcase. Zoot Suits,Lowriders,Early 20th century Hollywood,the Sunset strip,the history of California before it became a part of America, rodeo,and cowboys. But I'm pretty sure none of that will be showcased at this point.

Todd, I am absolutely with you on the impact of worldview. The world is becoming increasingly more post-Christian. However, it really seems that in this video you painted a very broad brushstroke over the entire Olympics, to the point where I found myself tilting my head at some of your conclusions. It is, in fact, correct to say that women in traditionally male sports is wrong. Or rather, more than that, women competing in any 'sport', per se, is wrong. Women were not built to be athletes or to engage in physical performance competitions the way men do. Compromising on that was the first step on the path that led to Current Year gender mania. Male and female created He them.

Idk. I don’t agree with your critique if women’s gymnastics here. I think it’s great the women are showing athleticism. Also, the sport is still inherently feminine. The women only compete on 4 events compared to men’s 6. The women do floor exercise to music, men do not. Women showcase their lower body strength and smaller frame on balance beam, men don’t even do the beam. Not to mention the leotards. Still a feminine sport

I was raised in a conservative, christian household, and was raised off of old media such as classic cartoons, andy griffith, fatger knows best, and not much from my own generation (ed edd n eddy and spongebob really) but after seeing how things were back in the day, and comparing to how it was growing up and now as an adult, i wished as a kid i could have a delorean time machine to go back to the simpler times, and it is still my wish to this day😂

I agree. I love Todd, but this was a little too legalistic for me. Was the opening ceremony gross? Absolutely, I couldn't finish watching it. But our athletes were great. Our female gymnasts were beautiful and displayed wonderful sportsmanship. Athletes used to compete naked...so...any clothes are better than none. And, why would an athlete wear something that would be a hinderance? Doesn't Paul use that as a picture of our removing sin and anything that could hinder us from gaining our eternal prize?

Nature itself teaches you this. Women are dramatically more likely than men to sustain serious injury in the course of exercise. Intense physical training shuts off the menstrual cycle and burns off the fat stores the body recruits for growing the fetus during pregnancy. Fierce, competitive, athletic behavior is directly at odds with the 'gentle and quiet spirit' which Peter instructs women to cultivate. Shall I go on?

You know it was orginally a celebration of the pagan god Zeus, men showing of their combat skills in the nude right? No women. And there was one winner per event and every else was a loser none of this second and third place nosense. And the prize was a crown made of leaves, not a a 1% gold medal. They also got a statue made of them and just about anyything they wanted from the people. Food, clothing, shelter, women. So going back to its pagan roots shouldn't surprise you.

What a wonderful celebration of God’s creation the Olympics were - man and woman bringing forth their God-given gifts. I am in awe of what a human can achieve and praise God for it….. feel he must be pleased. Sad that so many (mostly conservative) Christians can’t see that ! Brothers and sisters, your God is too small! As for the opening ceremony, I loved it. Completely missed the reference to the Last Supper despite being an Art History grad.

My husband stopped watching the Olympics 13 years ago, I can't even remember a time that I ever actually watched more than a couple video clips here and there from the Olympics. While my husband and I disagree on whether or not physical competition is biblically acceptable, we do agree that women should not participate in sports. We agree that the outfits leave nothing to the imagination. We agree that such events are nothing more than modern-day bread and circuses, Google that if you have no idea what I'm talking about. We are called to not conform to the patterns of this world, yet even Christians think that obsessing over worldly institutions is okay. 😢

Very good assessment!! I never saw the dichotomy, until you brought it to my attention. Thank you. I agree that it is all about "self" and has nothing to do about patriotism. Especially, since they have allowed professional sports to saturate the Olympics. I concur that women should stay out of weight lifting, but this goes to show where the feminist movement has gone. First they become a freak of nature, then all of a sudden, there are enough "freaks" to make a team and put them on the Olympic team.

Todd none of this is new. I noticed you didn’t mention Olga Korbut. One of her (athletic) moves was banned from the Olympics back in the 70s. What about Mary Lou Retton. Very athletic. I get what you’re saying in a way, because yeah I also remember when most people that I interacted with believed in God … not necessarily Christian but they were aware of a higher power, a creator. I have a lot to say about men, because maybe this doesn’t apply to you and your circle of influence, but there are a lot of abusive men out there. So many women are just flat out afraid of them. They aren’t and haven’t been protectors of women for an incredibly long time. Just some food for thought.

I’m guessing is the fact that it used to portrait the beauty of women and their unique feminine side. Many believe, which I include myself in it, that woman’s gymnastic is glorifying more the body and masculine side of it. Got to be honest, I’ve never found women who practice gymnastics professionally attractive because of their body. They train so hard for world attention that they change their body and stuff. Back then, beauty and elegance was cool. Now, masculine bodies with a sensitive emotion is cool. I think that’s what he refers.

Truth. The Olympics started in Rome and they practiced nude. To glory the human body and abilities giving no glory to God and without any shame or modest humility. Brute strength and force. In Rome, you were either physically praised or intellectually praised, or seen as nothing but a worker. Okay let me get this straight, You criticized gymnast for doing gymnastics. You actually believe the problem with the Olympics is that gymnast should not be doing gymnastics at the Olympics. Also people who won an event shouldn't be happy they won the event because somehow that's self-serving when you win the event you raced and won. There were a lot of things wrong with the Olympics a lot but if you're going to make a video that criticizes the Olympics you should probably come up with some more solid arguments than divers diving during the diving competition at the Olympics.

Men and boys have wore those loin cloths for professional swimming and diving since the 1970’s. Some have worn what looked like half a wet suit later on. Most young men and boys today are scared to death of revealing themselves, much less changing in the locker room openly and without shame. Women and girls have always worn conservative swimsuits in professional swimming and diving. You never saw them wearing a bikini! And a real man never took place in Olympics unless it was weightlifting or winter sports. Even taking it a step higher, real men under 50 hardly do anything manly today. Play football, baseball, or basketball, have poker or card games drinking cheap beer or whiskey, smoking cigars, or partying away. And even fewer settled and square that love church that’s a real church with hymns and hellfire preaching, not a rock concert and preaching relevant to today’s society.

I have to reply to this one. I read from Scripture today about Christ in the garden before He was arrested. He told the disciples to pray so they would not enter into temptation. Then Christ agonized in prayer because of what he knew he would be facing. The disciples fell asleep. When temptation came Christ prevailed. The disciples failed. In the disciples failing, they did all the manly actions of their culture. The list you just gave, though not sins if they do not master you, are not the measure of a man. Doing God’s will not your own is what God desires. My dear husband who lived with unbearable pain most of his life would not have measured up to your standard of a man. But at his memorial service a month ago, his children gave testimony that he strived to do God’s will through all his physical afflictions. Through his life they understood what a man was. I would humbly suggest you might reconsider your cultural list of what makes a man.
