I’m of the opposite opinion, Fanatics is going to price all the true collectors out of the hobby and it will only be for white collar investors who can afford these ridiculous prices. It’s dying for the blue collar folks who just want a simple thing to enjoy and share with their children. They already ‘raised prices’ up to what hobby stores charge on the second market, and what happened? Even higher prices at the hobby stores. So yes it will expand, but over $$$$$$ not the enjoyment of sports and hobby cards.

People who grew up as a kid in the 50’s 60’s 70’s 80’s understand sports cards as a great hobby of collecting but unfortunately today the Almighty dollar has changed things drastically. So Keep it simple - Keep remembering - Keep reminiscing - and just Keep collecting!

Dustin, i wish you were correct but i just don’t see it with my friends and sports cards in 2024. Everyone i knew collected in the 80’s up until the crash of ‘92. A few of my friends stuck around with me in the late 90’s to collect when the Foil/Chrome era came. Unfortunately the hobby got too expensive and i’m the lone wolf sports collector among my friends today. There is a nostalgia that we still talk about, but the hobby alienated them because of price points. They look at the base cards and know they are worthless so they aren’t going to waste their $$$. They understand the value in the high end stuff but are simply priced out. That’s the catch 22 of the hobby compared to 1989 is that it is clear what is high end and what is low end. You have so many potential collectors just take a pass because of those 2 options. After the crash of 1992, the hobby was never able to find a happy medium to keep the average collector. A card usually has value, but is expensive. Or it’s cheap and worthless. The failure of the hobby to develop a card that is affordable and holds value is what keeps us a niche hobby compared to the late 80’s.

I agree, there is still a lot of room to grow in the hobby and the hobby is fun! Just by inflation alone, our cash is guaranteed to lose value. Have a 3-6 month emergency fund then invest the rest in assets that have a proven track record: 401K (+employer match), IRAs (SP500, etc), *if you have enough then, go into real estate (home, rental, land etc). A few Sports cards can be considered assets (GOATs or would be GOATs, vintage, low print run etc). I would still only spend what I can afford to lose on sports cards. Based on my current budget, I can only afford a few hundred every month (I can’t afford and don’t see myself spending 4 figures or more on cards every month).

Totally agree, the 'escapism' element of the hobby is just as good (or better) than most of the slop curated by national conglomerates. Here you can curate your experience and be active in the spaces you like. It's similar to a 'Choose Your Own Adventure', but you can do it in real life! Also, the growth in younger hobbyists seems huge. When I was a kid being active in the hobby amongst friends, it seemed we were the only kids going to shows or at our local LCS. Now the proportion of youth to adults seems much larger, that's going to help "grow the hobby" as well. Thanks for another fun video!

How many of those kids are collecting vs. flippers just doing it for money? Because the hobby having a future is dependent on the majority of those kids falling into the collector category. And the reality is, most of these kids got into cards because they saw influencers making money during covid and are simply doing it as a fun way to make money. Even Michael Rubin and fanatics seems to be pushing that chasing money/gambling mindset. Once the well starts to run dry, the flippers will leave and unfortunately, I believe the vast majority of these kids you're seeing fall squarely intonthe flipper category.
@shorebreakcards

@johnwayne9828 it's impossible to know, but your assessment could easily come true. I think most people who buy and collect cards are the "silent majority", but there's no proof either way. Most people who came into the hobby during the boom just to make money have left, and anyone who comes into the hobby just to flip today will probably be gone sooner or later... But, there's always more that will come in to replace them.

Dustin I agree with the Nostalgia and do think we have growth and another boom coming. Here’s what I think a lot of people are missing or not talking about. I’m 47 and part of the junk wax kids era. Those kids are now in their 40s and 50s. They run the gamut from raising young kids, to a senior in high school this year to putting kids through college. I believe over the next ten to twenty years as the junk wax generation gets their kids raised and out of the house increasing extra disposable money as well as retiring and looking for a hobby the card market will boom and grow.

“The hobbies dead!” “They ruined the hobby!” “It’s over for cards!” “It’s all a scam!” “ like the 99s again!” Ive been seeing these stupid comments on KZbin for years. Literally years. The hobby is far from dead. If you don’t like it, then you should leave. No one wants your negativity and no one is forcing you to stay. Stop complaining and enjoy cards for what they are. Pieces of cardboard with pictures of men on. That’s all they are and people have been collecting cardboard for 100 years.. You can buy 1 cent cards or 1 million dollar cards. There is something for everyone. People who complain sound like a bunch of retar…. Nevermind I won’t say that. You get my point.

"Literally years"....how many? 1? 2? How long have you been in the hobby? If you had been in it before it went crazy during covid, you would realize how fragile the hobby really is. People just pumping endless money into it isnt a guarantee. Theres no "too big to fail" government bailout coming for the people dumping their retirements on cardboard. Dont want hobby negativity? Stick with mojo where comments get deleted. As much shit as I give dustin, at least he doesnt delete comments.

Unfortunately "10x the hobby" to Rubin means bring in 10x more collectors. That's all good and dandy but where's the focus on the actual product? So many improvements need to be made in terms of quality. Eliminate sticker autos, no more off-the-rack patches and jerseys, and pare down the product lines. That's where I would start. If the only goal is to bring more people in then guess what we'll get more of? Garbage. We will get more garbage.

@@grim7747 Actually, Michael Boobin doesn’t care one little bit about more collectors. He only cares about 10x the profits. Businesses aren’t in the business to care about people. They are in the business to care about their pockets. Expect higher prices, more garbage, and more gambling…….
