The great irony for me is that I usually fly my registered DJI Mini 3 Pro over the Atlantic Ocean in Myrtle Beach SC, exactly in front of the place where the USAF shot down the mysterious Chinese balloon. (The explosion shook my house.) Our authorities didn't seem to mind the balloon flying over our entire country. Why do they mind me flying my tiny DJI over my hometown? I will gladly buy an American made drone as soon as an American company can deliver the same quality and price as my DJI.

If things become too hard and difficult for authorised drone producers, you may begin to find some backyard operators may start to make "illigitimate drones" that have no geofencing, no serial numbers, no nothing to identify them, and then the authorities may realise they have a problem. Always will be a black market if things become too hard trying to do it the correct way.

Former Fed Gov here - and a heavy DJI drone user. I will say one thing - anyone who dismisses this outright as “bs” is probably very ignorant of how information collection, surveillance, etc. works worldwide, from every country. DJI could refute this, but doesn’t (IMO) because they’re indeed guilty of it. Heck - if this was a US company, you can bet they’d get subpoenaed for video evidence, using telemetry and user data, in the same way that the UK uses their own country’s CCTV network. You can bet that it happens. And we should assume as much until/unless proven otherwise. DJI has already demonstrated that they have no qualms openly lying to the public when it’s in their best interests. If they lie over such small things, what motivation do they have for telling the truth here? When it would (not could) shut them down?

I am a cyber security consultant, trained by the US Government for military cyber security. I work in the commercial sector now. I started working strictly cyber security in 2004. Three times the company I work for has evaluated DJI drones, looking at procedures to fly the drone securely so that nobody can steal the product (primarily images and video), to ensure that the drone cannot be hijacked by an external party, and to validate the firmware of a drone itself. The Federal government actually has websites that list DJI drones as an approved product. Every time someone talks about the cyber security of drones, your first question should be: "What kind of information are you concerned about, and what is the risk to (your business or operations) should that information be lost or manipulated?". Normally, the concerned person has not actually evaluated the risk of using the drone or the confidentiality of the data that they worry about using. For instance, I can fly a private airplane over the area you are photographing, and photograph it myself, without you knowing or my breaking any ordinances. So isn't that data 'publicly available'? DJI requires you to login to your account every 30 days using your remote.. They say this is for safety and to update the flysafe app. But they do download your flight logs every time you login. So can you blame the US government for banning the use of them? They don't want DJI having access to that data. IF the Drone didn't require you to login every mouth and worked with out needing you to do this. Then may be it wouldn't be getting banned.. I can't find the video at the moment, but Skydio were called out for being behind proposed legislation put forward in a state's congress (i.e. ban foreign drone manufacturers' products). The committee chairman verbally shut down the legislation proposer and excoriated him for acting in Skydio's interests. So at least that attempt was publicly discredited.

I love my drones. In fact, as a disabled US veteran who was pretty much a hermit in my neighborhood, drones have provided literally the only thing to get me out of the house and involved in a hobby of aerial photography and re-introduced still photography. I have introduced thousands into my private drones and watched as new legislation’s were limiting more and more of my operations. It seems rather than introducing an all out band that would create a political nightmare. They are taking steps that would take the stance of ‘death by 1000 cuts’ ideology. For those of us that have invested so much, I don’t see how this is anything but a legislation to monopolize what will eventually be hey single company backed by these politicians. This is nothing more than politicians playing the long end game. They don’t see small individuals trying to use a hobby. What they see is the complete control of a yet to be fleet in the future.

As a developer and owner of dji drones, I can say this : Dji has one of the best compressed and encrypted data protocol for video and data transmission. DJI is connecting to foreign servers . If you fly offline, like the cellphone is in airplane mode, dji transfers more data after the software connects again to the internet. That are facts. Clearly we dont now what they transfer because its encrypted. Lets say the transmission data is ok. I think the problem is, what could they transmit if the chines government give an order. I believe this has not happened yet. I think its complicated after America started a economy war with china. I believe google, facebook and others collecting much more data. Greetings from Germany.

This is the exact reason why I've given up flying drones. I'm 51 been flying all kinds of air craft since I was 7. I can't tell you how SHOCK I am at the public with drones. People don't even realize because they don't seem them all the satellites over head that can count the number of hairs on your head. Yet the don't stop and wont stop picking on drones. It's a matter of time before we are only allowed to fly them in our house. Our government sucks and they people that support this BS! A hobby I loved so much is just not worth the headache anymore. If they pay me full price, I might consider letting them have it. The thing is, one of the most powerful weapons in modern war is technology. China is a huge threat and wants at all costs be the world's leader. Chinese government is evil enough to force DJI to work for them. Since DJI drones are constantly using user's WIFI to connect to the internet, it can be a powerful tool to upload useful data and images to the Chinese government. Who knows what else the built-in technology inside the drones could be capable of giving DJI fully access to everything, including our WIFI and home network via DJI devices. Once they connect to our personal WiFi network, Chinese hackers have open doors to all our computers and devices connected to our network, including smart devices, phones, security systems, cars etc.

I bought the DJI Air 2S back in July 2021. My first drone. The thing was phenomenal. Had it til Oct 2022 and had not a single issue with it. Had over 90 flights and decided to sell it to a guy that says he uses it for rescue missions in Arizona. I'm glad I sold it to him. I did register it but I never got the part 107 license. I did use that drone for some of my youtube videos but decided it wasn't worth it to me anymore which is why I sold it. Hearing this news is sad and it makes me wonder that if it passes what will happen to all those people who still have their drone and fly them including those who use them for rescue missions? But hopefully they don't ban them. DJI does make awesome products. I have the DJI action 3 camera and DJI mic and love those products.

Far as information collecting, DJI been pretty open about what information they collect and far as the 'risk' it's primarily just communication between the remote and the drone. They're not Huawei, and if they were serious about going at them because of China they would have to ban off everything else that would be Chinese based... which is pretty much everything.

On August 10, 2023, Skydio announced it will sunset its consumer drone offerings and focus on Commercial and Enterprise drones. DJI recently announced it is limiting exports of their consumer drones to the US and a few other countries. We should all be paying close attention...

Russ thank you for the video. The talk of commercial drones doing deliveries (like Amazon, etc.) has been going on for a few years. Even with all the improvements in technologies for commercial drones they are still a long ways away from reality. The logistics of commercial drone delivery is mind boggling. And if you look at say "Wing" they are very limited in what they can do - weight, run time, delivery method, etc. The potential liability and risk is very high. All this to say that true commercial drone service is a lot longer way than most people think. What we are seeing is something similar to when Toyota and Honda were trying to make an in road in to the USA There was talk back in the day about high taxes, tariffs, etc. Instead Honda, Toyota and a host of others opened plants here in the USA employing Americans and proudly state they are made in the USA. A win for everybody. DJI would be most wise to follow in their footsteps.

I am a libertarian, I'm not a fan of our federal government at all, and I dislike 99.99% of politicians. However, I have family that work for the USAF, Homeland Security, and a couple of intelligence services, and I can tell you that ALL of them are extremely concerned with China's recent posturing and their spy and economic tactics. I think the US needs to wake up. I own and fly two DJI drones, mostly for Search and Rescue missions, and I'll be bummed beyond description to not be able to use them. But, there's a lot of smoke here, and the fire makes me more nervous than, in this case, government overearch.

Commercial drone delivery is so insanely inefficient energy wise that it shouldn’t be allowed to go forward until after the power grid absorbs the masses of electric cars being mandated by dictatorial states and the power to homes is no longer being reduced or shut off because of a lack of system production or transmission capacity. That won’t happen with the current trend of cloaking fossil fuel plants and increasing demand by mandating or even just pushing electric cars. Also, as a pilot of manned aircraft and drones, I really don’t want to see ANY unmanned autonomous commercial aircraft. YIKES

There needs to be a crackdown on software and how it is allowed to be installed. But that messes with our free market making it harder on business. The tricky part is it will have to be done to everything and it makes the free market less free. It really bothers me that DJI does not install through the Google play store and require you to install direct to your phone. I suspect that makes it so that Google OS will not be able to tell me how the DJI app is truly using my data or give me an option to truly remove the program. You see, dealing with computers for 25 years, when you install something it can be really hard to truly remove it eben if the program shows in Windows add and remove programs. The best way to get out stuff that makes your conputer act up after installing faulty or bad software is to format the primary storage drive and re install the operating system.

I was having my morning coffee the other day when I noticed barriers and a cone at the end of the street, leading to a busy street, by my corner house. Since I was also reading on my tablet, I got up and walked up to the now no traffic “busy” street (cordoned off from one end to the other, which was eerie seeing it like this) Down the street, about 150 meters west of my house, where police vehicles (one a forensic unit), flashing lights, no noise, other then the officers walking back and forth talking to each other. As I stood there watching and wondering what the heck was going on, I hear a familiar noise. My instinct and interest peaked, as a large drone flew up from the other side of the vehicles. To say I was fixated, is putting it mildly. As I kept watching everything, I noticed a motorcycle flat on the ground, on a driveway that lead to a retirement home, next to the police vehicle. This commercial drone, was flown back and forth, down the empty street and near to where the vehicles where parked blocking the street, at about 30m in the air. At one point, I noticed an officer peeking at his hand, which made me think he is the operator. Then he walked away from them all, and towards my spot. “Sorry to interrupt, is that a DJI drone” I asked him? “Yes it is”, was all he said and walked back, while occasionally glancing at his hand and the drone. Turns out that the police department in my Ontario, Canada, suburban city, was using a Matrice. I of course took a number of videos of this, using my iPad, watching the drone up in the sky and the police doing their job. No idea if stupid will follow stupid up here, with our Federal twits copying yours in the States. As this is NOT, a hype train, anyone should buy a ticket and board, against DJI. YES, buy, as I do not “buy” many things our Federally , or other countries Federally keep trying to sell us. I can imagine, your lawmakers, whom proposed this law against DJI, and watched what I watched, would be wringing their hands in glee. “Look, look, see, I am sure the Chinese government is learning all our secrets and how our police are doing their job! They probably are secretly replaying all the longitude and latitude coordinates from this and capturing all the videos! Horrors, we must stop them in their tracks! Skydio and our own government, would never do that!” Is probably what those lawmakers would say (as they purchase more Skydio stock). You all sold your federal reserve, you all bought into weapons of mass destruction ( and of course the “western nations”, do not have any), you bought into how wonderful Presidents can use twitter, you bought into how Presidents do not have inter marital affairs, and so forth. Why not take down a “evil” billion dollar company, for the showmanship it offers. Reminds me of those, ole wild west “doctors”, that sold snake oil as the cure all for everything. But I regress, as this should be an eye opener for all of us common type, to take notice. Make our voices heard, and stay at it till the end. They will never stop at just DJI, once they get their hooks in, and keep selling you “snake oil”. Good luck my southern cousins, and I hope you can kick that nonsense to the curb, where it and those lawmakers belong! To finish my short soliloquy, other then my elation watching them do their job and using the drone, this is not a completely happy story, as the 27 yr old driver, did pass away in that accident. Oh, I do enjoy my DJI Mini 3 Pro.

The fact that a Chinese company decides when and where you can fly is problematic. The FAA treats drones the same as regular aircraft and government agencies (police, etc.) actually have to file a flight plan for drones. They need to split consumer drones from government and commercial ones and let non commercial drones to fly as long as they stay out of restricted areas. The one thing DJI needs to do is share their control systems with software developers who make mapping software. Forcing commercial pilots to use the DJI mapping software is a lousy idea on their part. Guys will find other drones to fly that use other mapping programs.

@@battery_wattage Portable drones and high quality don’t typically go hand in hand. I fly larger machines with larger cameras because that is what benefits the customer most. I travel the country weekly (mostly driving) with these machines and have done so for almost two decades. I don’t see what everyone’s fascination is with pocket drones (aside from being inexpensive) unless they’re backpacking/hiking.

@@marktownsend78 well you gave enterprise level equipment but I would argue that DJI does a better job of price to performance for low tiered enterprise applications. When I do work it’s just for real estate and my drone is more than enough. My drone also suits my needs best than similar drones from the competition and is cost effective for me. For travel I meant air travel. Why would I want to haul around a whole suitcase for a drone when I can fit my entire kit in one of my carryons, otherwise I would have not had taken some amazing recreational shots. I still believe DJI is the best compared to the competition for specific markets it’s Tailored for especially when it comes to cost.

I question whether writing my congressman is of much use, but I'm willing to try. However, since my congressman isn't voting on this bill yet, who should I reach out to? The concept that these drones are a national security risk is absolutely absurd. There are so many better and more direct ways to spy on us if that is the end goal.

I love DJI, but don't be naïve and say "where's the evidence." China doesn't work like the US. There's no concept of warrants and probable cause or anything when it comes to private data. If a business becomes a substantial size the government involves themselves with all of their inner workings, including surveillance & direct data access. Large companies like Tencent have entire teams dedicated to managing the portal the government uses to access data. There's no concept of "not complying", So asking where the evidence is that the data is shared is the same cope TikTokers use. And similar to TikTok, a US-only won't work, TikTok stated very plainly that the parent company Bytedance has access to their data (even though it's stored state side....which they stress....very frequently...), and transitively, the CCP does as well. The government will not let DJI spin off a US division that they don't maintain control of. It'd be a huge IP loss to a rival for China. I think preventing it from being used in government where it may become a direct security threat definitely makes sense. When it comes to private citizens & companies though it definitely becomes a mixed bag. There's something to be said about not allowing foreign powers to influence the US. But at the same time I agree that this isn't done for that reason, it's done to allow the companies they want to monopolize the sector. The self-ID thing will definitely be a part of that. I'm not sure what the answer is, but as somebody who just flies casually, I will certainly be sad if DJI is banned.

Interesting. Especially the seeing of "Zipline" on here. If anyone has read up on the historical data of that company, the founder ran off to Rwanda, Africa and flew unmanned aircraft for years without regulation. Created multiple satellite drone operation post of up to 5 warehouses. Then went to West Africa into Ghana, Nigeria and then back to Kenya. Then he came back to the U.S. to mix it up with Amazon and Walmart to potentially partner with them for delivery good via Drones. And now is looking to regulate everyday people flying drones. Unreal. And here's a quote from there own website..."From powering Rwanda’s national blood delivery network and Ghana’s COVID-19 vaccine distribution, to providing on-demand home delivery for Walmart, to enabling healthcare providers to bring care directly to U.S. homes, we are transforming the way things move for businesses, governments and consumers." You do not need any network connectivity to fly most commercial drones. The aircraft talks to the controller via a proprietary protocol (Ocusync in DJI's case) and has GPS capabilities onboard. There is no need to connect to a cellular network.

I recently moved to China, I use to live in Canada and always wanted a drone but the drone laws in Canada are insane so never really did but since I moved to China the basically are no laws other than drone has to be under 4kg without a licence and stay away from government buildings other than that do whatever you want aha. My dad is really into drones and is currently living in the USA and it makes him mad then I have more drone freedom here than he does in the US… ironic I guess Lol

What is also interesting is that Skydio one of the best if not the best drone manufacturer in the United States has discontinued making consumer drones to focus on commercial drones as if to make way for the commercial drone industry. We live in scary times where so many people just can't seem to think critically or are easily influenced based on social media or what sounds good on paper. FYI, Florida adopted a ban on any UAV use by FL govt entities that are not on an outdated DOD NDAA compliant list.... I know for a fact that Skydio reps were involved in the passage of that bill. Government agencies statewide are prohibited from purchasing or operating a UAV not on the approved list. Most of the companies on that list no longer make drones for civilian market, and the ones that do are basically unusable. Most law enforcement agencies in FL adopted DJI drones between 2014-2021 and are now unable to fly. Although there is no enforcement mechanism in the law (because it is poorly written), most state agencies have complied and grounded their drone operations. I spoke to a DJI rep who said that Law Enforcement wasn't a big enough market for DJI to lobby for.... but agriculture and consumer sales would likely be something they will fight for. I actually went to a conference where a few people involved in the Commercial Drone Alliance spoke... They def made it sound like they were on Law Enforcement, Fire, and Search and Rescue's side.... However, it became quite clear to me their #1 focus was actually on commercial drone operations and government services were secondary.... with absolutely no consideration for the consumer drone market of hobbyists, photographers, videographers, etc. This conference was about 3 years ago.

In Australia DJI drones are banned by the Department of Defence and by Border Force (customs) for security reasons. Its not just a US thing.

As someone who has several DJI drones and Autel drones and really enjoys flying them daily, it really does concern me in regards to this current government legislation. However, as a former military soldier, I have often wondered about DJI geo fencing, which identifies every critical infrastructure and airspace and military installation and power plant and dams in the entire country. These would make extremely valuable first strike targets for any foreign country looking to cripple America in a first strike scenario. But on the other hand, it can just be a political power play at monopolizing an industrial market.

Getting back to the notion of integrating the airspace, why not add a third level. General unmanned aviation is ground to 400 ft. Corporate commercial and autonomous delivery UAV's are 500 - 800 ft. And manned aviation is 900 ft plus. Seems easier to regulate the flow that way. Lower levels would still have to yield to higher ones, of course.

It’s ridiculous that most people who “claim” drones are bad is simply due to the lack of knowledge about drones themselves, let alone the hundreds of uses. Good video, I didn’t know this legislation was underway. It might explain why Best Buy has not had the dual lavalier microphone by DJI in their stores for over 10 months. Sad as it sounds I think if there is to be hope for DJI in the USA they may have to hire Hunter.

Since the beginning some 100+ years ago amateur “ham” radio operators have for the most part successfully defended their right to use dedicated portions of the spectrum for non-commercial/recreational use. Your everyday drone pilot, both commercial and recreational should take a lesson from them or perhaps try to associate themselves with the ham community in order to spread the word to elected officials. Recreational and small size commercial operators won’t be excluded for the sake of the big boy’s profit. Beyond that, every drone owner/operator should take a few minutes to call or email the Senators and Representative and let them know their position. If we don’t speak up now, soon enough it will be too late.
