I have mixed feelings about it, in that for sparing, as instructors, we must be very diligent to monitor man vs. women sparing, because, in general, women can become overwhelmed by the power output of a man, as well as the speed. So, when I am teaching mixed men and women I specifically give the parameters of how violent the interaction will be, power output and speed. Back to should we teach mixed classes, I think teaching combined men women will give a female the best chance of learning to defend against a man. @@CombatSelfDefense

As a person is trained in a lot of different martial arts, most of my life, just for the fun and experience of it all I never really cared if I was rolling with a woman or a man, but I could see a woman being a little worried about rolling with a man But I’m gonna treat them how I wanna be treated regardless, equality and equity are different things. Life isn’t meant to be fair because without a challenge without all that motivation, you’ll never get any better at anything when somebody tells you know, it adds drive to something it pushes you to keep moving forward, essentiallyyeah it doesn’t feel good but without consequences there can never be positive

As a woman who trained in martial arts since I was 12 because I was assaulted and threatened by males and gangs where I grew up. I ended up loving it for fun and comradre but to learn the techniques before actually practicing with force, my instructors always tried to pair me withsomeone who was closer to my size made it much easier to learn the techniques before having to actually use them in real life or hard training. Later on in my life I actually ended up having to use what I'd learned to defend myself from murderer/rapist. I ended up helping to put him away for 30 years, because it wasn't his first time around the block. He had been raping 2 to 4 year old babies before he was released and went after me. Thank gawd I was trained by teachers who cared about a girls being able to actually defend life and liberty, not just a sport. It's less about male and female and more about strength and size, which 99% of the time women (the real ones that is) are smaller and not as strong as men no matter how fit the girl or woman is.

Interestingly enough, I think this depends more on environmental, social and cultural conditions rather than a purely black or white scenario. So it is kind of a spectrum which light contact / hobbyists groups with get more of a 50 / 50, heavier contact groups usually have Tomboys and certain niches like Sumo wrestling would end up automatically male. A good analogy for this would be how a hiking group is very unlikely to have people who dislike Sunshine while an indoor activity group would have more of them. It isn't that the Hiking group is biased against people who dislike Sunshine, but it is the people who dislike Sunlight that would choose not to get into Hiking trips.

This has nothing to do with the vidro but I been wanting to ask you this question for a while now,do you think that if someone learns how to fight FIRST they will be good at self defense?bc that’s a problem I see with kenpo black belts is they practice a bunch of these different techniques yet the person has no survival instinct,I believe doing Cardio, speed, footwork, strength training is far more important then self defense techniques or Kata.I believe a martial artist should focus on learning combat first and then they can learn self defense techniques,to me I think this is why boxers and kickboxers are so good,no kata,no bunkai,no unrealistic self defense, just focused on fighting, what do you think??love your videos btw I learn a lot from them

This is more of a social issue than a "martial arts" issue. However here's my two cents on the subject. The quote South Park, "Either everything is okay or nothing is okay." In regards to, "you shouldn't hit on girls in your gym," what you should actually say is "you shouldn't hit on girls in your gym, creepily." Now personally I don't go to martial arts gym to hit on girls, if you get rejected then it just becomes awkward because you have to share that space with that woman and fair game, but to allude to "keep your eyes to yourself and don't, because this is a place of vunerability," doesn't check out to me, because if you exclude a dojo from a place from hitting girls then that another place that disallows flirting. Work and maybe a couple of other unique areas, sure don't hit on your coworker but a dojo, no, that should be fine but you gotta accept the consequences of what happens if things go south (of course don't sexually harass but that's a different issue). The excuse of "you go to a bar or a club for that" doesn't work because women complain about being hit on there too. The problem isn't the space, its you, but also in both flirting and fighting "pick your battles wisely." As for a need for a men's only space, I can genuinely think one of one reason and that's a gym that sparring/fighting focused, as in you go in, and you pair up with gloves on and are told "don't get hit." I can say this is probably for people who are interested in either the ring or those with a desire for extreme martial arts training. So it's reasonable that if I'm an instructor there and know my clientele of people who want to fight seriously, a girl walking in, I would have to say 'no.' Because it would interfere with my business! I could see justified complaints of someone who wants to learn to fight complain about having to spar with a girl and not another man closer to his size and strength. Most men are taught a very young age to not hit a girl so a girl in this case would be incredibly disruptive! However this is a very niche example as I personally don't see many women (that I know personally) wanting to enter a dojo like this. Final point: The martial arts is not a place for equity. In fact it's very disrespectful for the art, the tradition and even the women involved when you apply equity. If you cannot perform the expected skill then you don't deserve advancement. If someone with a major disabillity came in with very poor motor control in their arms then I couldn't in good conscious give them a black belt unless they were damn good with their kicks to where it didn't matter, because then it's charity. The same fighter who trained hard and performed the expected training would be disrespected because it would show that his hard work is a joke and that all you need is to be "special" to earn the same reward. It discredits the meaning of "black belt" or any other higher status within the community. That isn't to say that handicapped shouldn't partake but you have to treat him the same way as everyone else. You didn't invent that style of martial art, someone else hundred of years ago did and unless that person wrote down that he believes in equity then who are you to shame him by giving his seal of mastery to a student who couldn't meet his expectations. Why does this matter with girls? Well because you can't say we need equity to women in martial arts. A women's only class is fine, I genuinely don't think men care about them or that they want a men's only unless its about my previous paragraph's reasons. A woman should be allowed to do mamrtial arts but we don't change what the martial arts are to accomodate women. As a teacher I would judge, train and grade the 120 pound woman with the same standards as the 200 pount jacked man, and the 130 pound tiny scrawny boy and the 280 pound obese male, etc, etc. If you come into the dojo, you are all sibling diciples and no one gets special treatment.

"martial arts is not a place for equity. its disrespectful to apply equity to martial arts." what is bro cooking. equity is giving students a space to achieve the best they can, which the video has addressed. who is talking about belt colours? the original video is clearly talking about just having a place to practice martial arts effectively and authentically. i think it's disrespectful to pretend martial art spaces are apolitical, that any person entering is starting from the same position of privilege. again, i implore you to re-check your understanding of equity. please use the original video's beautiful definition: "allocating resources and opportunities to people based on their starting circumstances."

Martial arts, in its essence, are for everyone. Women for sure start MA’s for self defense and it goes without saying that they benefit a lot by training against men. This makes the experience more real but still in a controlled environment. Men also benefit because mastering a technique means you can control it. If you want to go full throttle against a guy same size as yours, it’s just regular drill in several MA’s and there isn’t even need to ask for. Then, speaking about instructors, I think that having both a male and female instructor is a plus for a Dojo/Gym, ‘cause it’s regarded as higher qualification. Good video!

There's a lot of truth in this video. I took up Uechi-Ryu Karate because I wanted to practice a martial art. Wasn't severely bullied as a kid, got mugged only once in my entireife before then, so it was never a Need. I did it because I Wanted to do so. More likely women train because they have a Need, especially given how patriatchy and toxic masculinity have been driving elements of our society for far too long. Men fear they be laughed at when rejected. Women fear they'll be killed. So if women need a safe space away from men to train, I'm all for it. A woman should not have to re-experience a trauma in order to train. Most men don't have that problem. So if a dudbro says they fear "false allegations" and "distraction by a woman's energy", they're really just saying they're the problem. Not women.

I agree, though I think that a women's only martial arts gym that focuses on self defence should have them training with men, since its focused on self defence and women tend to do self defence classes because of men. Recreational / sport oriented training is fine with only women if it makes them feel safer, and eventually those places will go away anyways the more women join regular gyms.

I agree, but I also think the best self defense IS sport oriented training. Particularly for women, I think BJJ more than covers them. So if they train competitively, and occasionally mix it up with a man, they’ll be better off than if they’d taken a self defense class only
@extra2042

I does not matter if male only gyms are "necessary", what matters is if the standard is applied to everyone. If women are allowed to have female only gyms/classes, then there is no reason why there should not be male only gyms/classes. Even if the male only gyms/classes are pointless it does not matter, what matters is if you could go to one in the first place. People should be able to train in whatever environment they want, solo, mixed, etc. Regardless of how this would effect their development. The biggest problem is that US, like many other western countries does not have total freedom of association. You CAN NOT legally open a male only gym or run male only classes, because of anti-discrimination laws. Strangely however these laws do not apply to women, EXCEPT in recent times with the whole trans rights movement. How interesting.

In reality, there's only about a 7% risk from your child being murdered by a complete stranger. About 62% of that risk comes from mother and father combined (I think it was slightly higher for father). Why don't you just ask some random stranger at the mall to watch your kid for a bit while you go shop? Statistically, they're safer with the stranger, right?

@@CombatSelfDefense Equity is a concept that comes out of the social justice and socialist movements. Equity and equality are mutually exclusive. "Equity" is why people in my family were prohibited from attending university under socialism because the needs of the working class outweighed the skills and achievement of individuals. Dude gave her a blue eye, so she immediately left and the next day she sued him, accusing him of intentional assault. 2) The other woman (who practiced MMA) was sparring with a judoka. I'm an old woman who doesn't train in anything these days, so take this as you will. Your girlfriend likely had some of the same messages drilled into her as a child that most of us did: fighting isn't ladylike & being too athletic is unattractive to men. She'll have to work on countering that messaging internally while also attempting any self-defense training. You can help her by being encouraging & being mindful about not reinforcing backwards BS about what women should or shouldn't do. Part of that may involve simply acclimating herself to a gym environment, but it could also carry emotional baggage with it that gets surfaced, so just be aware that self-defense & physical fitness aren't always as straightforward for everyone. You're right that most of those, "women's self-defense, " classes are bunk for actual self-defense, but they do contain a kernel of truth: the first step toward active training for a lot of women is learning & practicing assertiveness.

She'll get used to it. Bruises aren't the problem, injuries are. Beginners are much more easily injured, especially if trainning with a larger, stronger opponent, aka a guy.. Let her get into how she wants to do it. Let her get used to it, and move on to or add training with males after she has worked at it for a while if she is till interested. Take her to a range and let her get some firearms training. It's a great equalizer that gives one a better chance if needed. My first actual training was at a summer camp in the mountains. The older girls would teach the younger girls what they'd been taught. we'd practice how we would fight if our lives were in danger. It was fun, lots of laughs and being silly, we were just kids, but I learned a hella lot of good moves and I was only about 11 years old the first year. I remembered those moves well into adulthood, the best one running if you have that option, but some others that also saved my arse from pervert freak criminals more than once.

I wouldn’t be surprised that one day we see a similar trend in martial arts. I am not surprised men want to protect themselves with their own classes from such accusations.

@@shingitai5882 I doubt you have witnessed any such thing. In fact, given how you choose to blame women for what they wear instead of the men who choose to behave badly, I doubt you've even ser foot in a gym or dojo...

@@MikeBrendan2112 I have been practicing Shotokan Karate with the KUGB for almost thirty eight years and I also practiced Aikido for fifteen years before falling out with my instructor. The story is true, and the point I was trying to make is that women are actually at considerable risk against men even if they do have a high skill level. A untrained man is stronger and can be very much more naturally aggressive. I wasn’t blaming women for what they wear I was pointing out that they are women who film themselves in revelling clothing and then upload it on the internet whilst at the same time complaining about unwanted attention which are in fact false allegations! I have watched a channel on KZbin dedicated to this of women making false accusations in gyms which if weren’t filmed could have led to a serious problem.

Sumo exists outside of Japan. Here in the US women can do sumo as well. Just because the country or culture of origin has specific rules, doesn’t mean the rest of the world does the same.

@@CombatSelfDefensedisagree. The sumo org is in Japan. They stated, no women. They make the rules not me. Women in the rest of the world push each other out of a circle. Doesn’t make it sumo. Don’t be mad at me. Take it up with the Sumo orgs in japan.

@@mathewpercy3292 I have zero feelings about you. There’s a sumo dojo here in my town. Women train there. The building has sumo above the door. If you want to “no true Scotsman it,” by all means.

Men's only class? So basically normal training class but without women 🤨? That is kinda stupid.

I saw a advert in my village for a MMA fitness class lead by a lady instructor. I checked her out and apparently she has “NEVER” had a MMA fight. Although she thinks because she has trained in a MMA dojo for a couple of years with some amateur fighter’s it makes her an expert to teach a fitness class based on MMA! She is obviously just using the term to hoodwink the public in thinking they are doing MMA, when actually they are just doing a basic fitness circuit. All so she can make money out of the gullible.😳😡🤡😂🤣
