Wow. I am very impressed with anyone with enough guts to cover any aspect of this story. There seems to be a lot of new interest in Sam Cooke and the complicated life he lead that obviously included Bobby Womack. I have been consulted on two books including his nephew Erik Greene work “Our Uncle Sam” and also on the Netflix documentary. I’ve met with many of Sams old business and personal friends and even the legendary Zelda Sands. I’ll just say this: Bobby Womack and many others worshipped and idolized Sam Cooke. He was still just a boy legally when he was seduced by Barbara Cooke (BTW did you know she had a twin sister?) Therefore, Bobby could be considered a sexual victim. Barbara saw several men while Sam had multiple women. It is true they had an open marriage. Very near the time of his murder/assassination, Sam Cooke records were outselling Elvis Presley. That’s right! Outselling Elvis. He was the hottest thing in the music industry but he was also very very conscious. He had recently discovered that his manager, the late Allen Klein (yes the manager of the Beatles and Rolling Stones, another great agent cheats artist story) had legally maneuvered Sam into a position where he was actually an employee of Klein and that Klein was cheating him out of large sums of money. Sam had confided in friends that he was about to fire Klein. He was also about to divorce Barbara. This was actually not a huge secret. After Sam was murdered, Barbara sold his entire catalog to Klein for a paltry $100k. She married Bobby after his parents REFUSED to sign any consent. They actually had to wait for his birthday to come up before carrying this deed out. The incident at the hotel where Bobby was beaten is all true. Barbara did not drown her son Vincent Cooke. He fell into the family pool and drowned while she was allegedly on the phone, drunk, with her boyfriend. Little Vincent was the main grip she had on Same Cooke. He was another innocent victim. Sam does have one other living son but he lives in seclusion. Guess why? I can say with absolute certainty that the official version of Sam Cooke’s death is completely fabricated. There are many theories and versions. There were people checked into the hotel and people in that neighborhood of Cienega Blvd who know the truth but are afraid to speak out. The mob was involved and for many reasons. Sam Cooke’s murder was a message to other Black entertainers and entertainment in general. Sam had a lot of enemies in the music business and definitely in the music business unions. My own investigation was stopped dead cold about 20 years ago when I requested the crime scene photos and was told that they had been destroyed. That was a lie. If you want to know the extent of the lie behind the official version, you will find it in the pictures of the morticians struggling to make his corpse look presentable. Part of the problem was that Sam was in the morgue for at least 2 days as a John Doe. Things happen to a dead body that disfigure it even while in the freezer. First, they have to be thawed out. But anyway, the highest resolution crime scene photos tell the story. Sam is naked except for a Black Jacket and he is leaning up against the wall. His head dropped forward and most telling, Blood is seen still dripping from his mouth. The story that a elderly woman beat him that bad and then shooting him is ludicrous. Eye witnesses at his funeral confirmed that his hands told a story of a man who was fighting for his life or had been tortured or worse just beaten to death. The body did not match a story of a healthy virile 32 year old vs a elderly hotel clerk. I was able to review the autopsy of Sam Cooke. He was executed mob style and then decorated as a sign to others that they meant business. The hooker was known to “Roll” her clientele and Sam already knew her. She was bait to get him out of the club they were in and into a compromised position that was witnessed by many. She later served time in prison for shooting her boyfriend and was tracked down about 2 years ago by the group from Netflix. They interviewed her but refuse to put it out in the public. I was told she lives in Hawaii but is too senile to give any real good information. Anyway, I could go on and on and on. I have been involved with this case for over 20 years. I always love to see young people discussing this even if there is a great deal of speculation. Sam Cooke’s story will one day be told in truth. But as long as the Klein family owns the rights to his music and song catalog we will not know the truth. This has been very cathartic for myself. Thank you for your post and the interesting accompanying music. God Bless and take Care.

What a disgusting tale. The man seemed obsessed with Sam Cooke's life, how pathetic and fatal for him. He was so busy looking into someone else's basket that he couldn’t see the gifts that had been bestowed on him. Having sex with a non-consenting minor is wrong. It's obvious that the daughter sought revenge by choosing his brother as a mate, but thank goodness that it worked out for her. I feel so sorry for the daughter of Sam Cooke who lost so much. Bless you for sharing this story. I am a huge Sam Cooke fan and never understood why the name Bobby Womack bothered me so much until now, I must have felt it in my bones. You have to be pretty dirty to show up to someone's funeral wearing their clothes and escorting Sam's wife. His behavior was sick and demented.

@sarrhodes82772 жыл бұрын
It's beyond the pale to behave like that - and you couldn't if you truly loved the person you were supposed to be mourning. But my impression of BW was that he was driven and erratic and would do his own thing no matter what - and what I read about Barbara wasn't great either; perhaps, being older and more worldly, she led him. Did Sam really want her in his life or was it really for his daughter that he married her? That was the impression I was left with. Linda looks so happy and exuberant with Cecil; I listen to their songs and feel I can read their love story through them and how they had to be secretive in order to begin their relationship. But honestly Barbara doesn't come out of the saga any better than Bobby. Still, it's also fair to say that you can never truly know what's going on in the lives of others.

Unfortunately, great geniuses like Sam Cook are know to breed jealousy envy and predatory behaviors from close associates. Knowing that Bobby Womack died as he lived is a testimony to the evil person he was. No real surprise since she would also later marry another one of Sam's childhood friends. I agree with the Cooke family, she should have known better. Bobby Womack unfortunately made his bed so he had to lay in it. He probably wouldn't have died broke if he had been more responsible during his lifetime instead of running around with different people. He is so fortunate that Sam Cooke's Widow did not kill him for messing around with her daughter. That is unforgivable I'm sorry. Yes he was talented and for that he should be recognized, however, everything that he did in his private life was pretty negative.

As a kid, I could never stand the sound of his voice! And when I learned of this information (while listening to the radio and driving to the airport in Washington, D.C., during the early 1990s), I was furious. I learned about the affair with the daughter about five years ago, but didn't know about her marrying his brother. I don't know if this was karma. I think it was drug use, and bitterness that he never achieved in decades what Sam had achieved in a few short years.

Bobby Womack was a star in his own right.A beautiful singer had no reason to be jealous of anyone.Thats what's fuels all the hate and discourse in the world when you are jealous of another person and their gifts, you loose your purpose and reason for being.If you know your purpose you don't have to be jealous of anyone.There is a reason for our existence.If you know what it is you will know your purpose and your reason for being here.

If Sam Cooke wasn’t having an affair and being a terrible husband, he would not have been murdered that night. His wife don’t own him anything. Stop honoring ashy man. I do love Sam Cooke the singer, but I don’t respect Sam Cooke the men. People in the back row we need to separate the two.

This whole thing is so unbelievable that I would not be surprised if it ends up being a Spike Lee or Tyler Perry movie. The one thing that was not covered in the video and I remember seeing on Soul Train was the singing duo, Womack and Womack (Sam's daughter, and one of the Womack brothers performing together) trying to get a singing career started.

I could definitely see this being part of a movie. I didn't leave out Womack & Womack. One thing for sure two things for certain, leaving gospel music to do secular music has nothing to do with the other. If something going to happen to you or whoever, believe you me it going to happen regardless. It’s a ton of people who didn’t leave gospel music and that’s heavy in the church who are mean and wicked. People sleeping with other people significant other, pastors sleeping with people wives, people gossiping about each other then smile in your face. See it all the time nothing new. Great video nonetheless. Far as Bobby, the ultimate tragedy for him is losing a child. The child on the Woman’s gotta have it album cover
