Ok so here’s the truth. I work for an independent Rolex AD in the South of England. There are no “Dummy” models. In our store exhibition models are watches that are already allocated but remain on display fully stickered until the next consignment comes in at which point they are sold to the buyer. All AD’s are required to have a certain amount of watches on display at any given time so this is the best way to achieve that. No dummies or watches that go back for CPO. Simple as that

I can't say I know much about the inner workings of Rolex dealers, but I can say this: when I went looking around 2 years ago, every Rolex boutique had maybe one watch per window and usually just one watch per case inside the shop. All of them were listed Display Only and none of them, and none of the models in the windows were ever running. Fast forward to this week, and the dealer in a nearby suburb had four or five watches in each window, all of them running and set to the correct time. The windows still had the Display Only tags in the corner, but I suspect that's much more of a formality these days. Whatever the case, supply appears to be significantly higher than it's been since the Before Times.

Here’s my experience, my AD has all Rolexes that they get as exhibition (unless they get multiple of one model) they keep them as exhibition only until they get another shipment in, once a new shipment has come in theyre up for sale. They only let customers with previous purchasing history try them on and they’ve told me just wait 4 weeks until we get more watches, then you can buy it. They do this for just released Tudors as well. Im in a tiny developing country so it makes sense to keep them on display until they have more watches to sell so their display doesnt look empty.

My dealer told me that when your (say) Submariner comes in, the Dealer's agreement with Rolex requires that they must be displayed for 2 weeks, after which you can collect your watch. Back in the 90's, on two seperate occasions several years apart, I walked into an AD in the UK and bought a GMT II and a Sea Dweller out of the window. The wait then was non-existent if they had the watch, a few weeks if they had to get it from Rolex on order. I asked about a Daytona and was told if I wanted steel, that was the only thing with a long wait - 5 years. If I wanted a solid gold one, I could have it inside a week!

I was told by my AD that they were required to send exhibition pieces back to Rolex and would then receive them back for sale presumably reconditioned. This was a year ago and I did purchase a piece through this mechanism - it came back fully stickered but was not sitckered when I tried it on a month or so before.

I've owned a Brietling for about 7 or 8 years. The only piece of "jewelry" I will wear. I've been bitten by the watch bug recently and kinda thought it would be cool to have a Rolex. Being totally new to the game I started investigating Rolexes on YT. OH MY GOD! All the negative videos on this watch company, I thought I was going to be walking a minefield. I was able to buy one from an AD here locally. Not the specific one I wanted, but a nice one to start. I'm not familiar with the apparent boom in watches from years past, but I guess I'm getting in at the right time. Every hobby I've had, so to speak, has had a significant learning curve.

Ok so I’ve seen the exhibition pieces with dummy movements here in the UK. Existed for a brief period. Went in a few months later and neither of the two dummies that I saw were there. They were now either keeping the display empty or keeping products that were promised to other customers but weren’t delivered yet. Other than that I completely agree with our video. Can attest to what you’re saying being true! Also yes, lots of gold in the Middle East and Asian markets because it is genuinely popular there. (Middle East partially confuses me because on one hand some Muslim friends say they shouldn’t be wearing old but others are fine with and instead prefer it). Asia (including India) has always loved TT in my experience. So no surprises there either.

5:25 I live between UK and Dubai. Yes, that is somewhat true though it would normally be expats who buy the yellow gold pieces as the local population do not buy gold to wear (only platinum). Hence, the locals are usually on a long waiting list for steel or platinum pieces (potentially with diamonds too). Also, what you said is true I think - at the height of the peak, I was told that the exhibition pieces belonged to Rolex and not the AD and therefore they could not sell them. These days, if there is something on display which I am interested in, they initially say it's not for sale but then go and speak to someone (I guess a manager) before they agree to sell it to me.

Without a doubt, ADs supply grey market dealers and make huge profits. There is a significant slow-to-sell Rolex inventory in the grey market, including steel sports models, some going for not too much more than retail price here in Sydney, Australia. Many are brand new stickered pieces. I guess grey market dealers are probably these "loyal customers" with a huge spend history and ADs are complicit in selling to them for big profits. I recently traded my old Rolex for a barely used, near-mint Rolex GMT Master 2 two-tone yellow gold GRNR for not much above retail price in the grey market. Made a call in the morning and picked it up that afternoon.

Also got Explorer 40mm, Dayjust 40mm yellow gold jubilee bracelet with fluted bezel Wimbledon dial, 31mm dayjust jubilee fluted bezel with blue diamond flower motif. Also having custom necklace for wife done there. I am very sure when they get Christmas shipments in I will have a GMT or no date sub I wanted. Actually the jubilee bracelet skydweller would be fine too. I am 1000% sure if this. Also getting another dayjust fluted bezel with blue, green or Wimbledon dial. Will have 2 more before Christmas. I don’t know I want to reveal too much though. But there are some watches in display that get allocated. Not all of them though. Some do have to go back and to make sure they don’t sell those they don’t have cards they give you when you buy it. If you are having issues at your AD go to another one. I drive 90 minutes to this one but it’s so worth it. I can even call and get updated on if they have anything. That’s how I got the yellow gold dayjust and the one for my wife. So just having a good relationship is key.

@@sc1 my AD has side cases beside the exhibition case. Those are sometimes for sale but still there to try on. But the main case they have exhibition only. The side cases I think are where they put the exhibition that can get buy or get allocated. It looks like one whole display though and in middle case it says exhibition only. So yes and no. It’s part of the display and no if you are not a customer already you would not know. If you are a customer you will be allowed to buy from that case. Now once you are regular customer that buys often then you are told which are allocated and what’s not. But that’s pretty if you are spending bigger money not just one watch. They even let me know some of the pieces they know they are getting. Once again though between watches and jewelry I spent about 42k in 5 months. I will probably end up spending 80-90k a year in there truthfully. Plus I actually get along with them really good. I don’t sell my watches though. I think that was one thing is they don’t like flippers. Pretty obvious I wasn’t considering I had one but watch engraved and the desk diving scars on clasp.

There are good deals to be had on quasi vintage subs, GMTs, and also the Seadweller 43 as well as the TT GMT oyster. All can be had for under 15k. Just don’t be some silly ass Ukrainian and buy the Exploerer1, AirKing or OP garbage.

got my 39mm with the white dial on the 3-link "Bader" bracelet watch on AMZWATCH 3 weeks ago and am loving it to pieces. Absolute fantastic watch that wears super comfortable on my 6.75 inch wrist. Chose the 3-link over the 5-link bracelet for the toolless quick adjustment. Way more comfortable than my Longines Hydroconquest 41 mm.
