Hi Jonathan, after trying both high E and low F, what is your favourite? I really wanna get a NS design but I don't know what go for. Do you think, for example, if I get the low F one , could I change the whole set to have a high E when I need it or that would damage the bridge? As the lines would be a bit thicker, I thought if I put some kind of protection and filling that would not damage it. Thanks a lot! I watched all your NS design videos and really inspired me to get one of those =)

The High E string sounds much like a Tenor Violin, & it could allow you to play Violin pieces down an Octave.

Jonathan Humphries That thin High E String for a 6 String Cello (F, C, G, D, A, E) does produce a Special sound similar to that of a Tenor Violin from the New Violin Family (you might also recognize that sound from Bach's 6th Suite) which really makes it pop out.

@UC90kFaetJuVD5cAL_tZT1dQ NS Design Strings are basically re-branded Helicore Strings. Helicore Strings are a little bit easier to bow because they're a bit thinner. The Helicore Cello High E String is actually wound in Aluminum. Strings for Orchestral String instruments are Flatwound because they respond to the bow more properly, plus they hold tune more easily compared to Round Wound Strings which would 1) the sound would be too bright, 2) they would eat up the bow hairs, & 3) the tension would be too low.

Jonathan Humphries You might like the sound of a High E String cause you could not only play the 6'th Cello Suite but you can also play Violin pieces an Octave lower than written. I have a friend named Michael Beckman who plays the 5 String Cello, & he has on it a High E String which is an Octave below that same string on the Violin. The brighter sound of the High E String could give the Cello a whole new sound.

@@CelloCoach I can't wait to hear that, cause the High E String will make playing the Higher notes much easier in Cello pieces, & als will allow you to play Violin pieces an Octave lower than written. Bach could've used the 5 String Cello as an alternative to the Violin cause he didn't even know that anything written for Violin is playable on 5 String Cello. So with a High E String you can actually play Bach's Violin Sonatas and Partitas (BWV 1001-1006) an Octave lower than written to keep things going during the pandemic. Because alot of Cellists are getting a 5 String Cello this might be a good time to build up with 5 String Cello tutorials. What makes the 5 String Cello with a High E String super cool? You can also go to Violin Sheet music, look at it, & play the notes with the same fingerings, the only difference is you'll sound an Octave lower than written.

@@CelloCoach There are 6 String NS Cellos out there, and they usually put inlays on the fingerboard and sometimes frets to make it easier to play. If the High E String on a Cello sounds Violin like, you can actually play Violin pieces down an Octave.

@@CelloCoach My name is Oscar Stern and interestingly enough all the Daddario strings for bowed string instruments are flat wound strings (round wound versions are waiting). In the case of the Helicore Cello Strings (including a High E String for the 5 String Models) they're made up of flat ribbons of various sizes wound around a stranded steel core to give the string its final gauge. What are the Cello string gauges in inches? I'd wanna experiment with round wound Electric Guitar strings on a cello to see how bright it can get.

Helicore Strings (NS Design Strings are the same) are generally easier to bow cause they're just a little bit thinner plus they hold tune better. Helicore Strings are fantastic for everyone, beginner to expert.

Jonathan Humphries If you wish to have a High E, you can restring your 5 String Cello with Larsen Original Medium Tension Cello Strings including a High E, or D'addario Helicore Medium Tension Cello Strings Plus a High E. D'addarios will save you lots, & they're all color coded:www.daddario.com/products/orchestral/cello/helicore-cello/helicore-cello-string-set-44-scale-medium-tension/. If you string your 5 String Cello C2, G2, D3, A3, E4 the D String will be in the Center as your Root Position Strings.
