I’ll argue that pamela in the comics is more of an antagonist than a villain since she seemed to care about your people but still wanted to be the leader

That’s exactly what made her a great "baddie". She’s simply a character with a different point of view, a different set of goals that clashed with Rick and his communities. There was never a real indication that there was going to be any sort of conflict between the two groups other than a difference of opinion. In fact, the arrival of Ricks people instead became the catalyst for the revolution of the Commonwealth which was already on its way. Ricks only involvement was helping stop the violence rather than fight it. Pamala was overthrown because the people were inspired by his way of life rather than hers. It was such a contrast to the likes of the Governor or Negan.

I agree 100% and think the problem was at its’ worst with the timeskip and the sanctuary had fallen. All of the themes and ideas Rick put forward in the show are proven to be wrong, and that you can’t rebuild the way it was before because we are too far gone. Then the Kingdom falling, Alexandria getting destroyed all support this idea rather than Rick’s. Then Commonwealth shows up and expects us to 180 without Rick guiding us to that theme

I have no idea why they left Pamela Milton's reveal until the tenth episode of the season, they met Pamela right at the start of the Commonwealth arc in the comics, and there isn't enough dialogue about what the Commonwealth is, what resources and infrastructure they have, how many people they have, how it came to be. Its so weird that in the show, like you say, the group is so destroyed after the damage the Whisperers did, the storm, the Reapers, that the Commonwealth came along like a saviour to help them rebuild, rather than the communities being self sufficient and looking for allies. None of the characters question the true motives of Pamela and Lance, or how the Commonwealth came to be, what skeletons are in their closets, why the society is so unequal, they all just kind of go along with it until the shit hits the fan, and the way it happens is so truncated and has nothing to do with the Commonwealth itself but Lance's political ambitions and Sebastian's greed and arrogance. In the comics, I'm pretty sure it's the people that revolt against the Commonwealth and the main characters are kind of thrust into the conflict, and Rick tries to mediate it peacefully, which results in his death, whereas in the show it kinda just... happens. And then in the third act, Sebastian and Lance are killed off and they make Pamela the villain in such a cack handed way, instead of establishing her as the villain the first place

I have to say, the change in thumbnail made me pass over this video for like 2 months, I only just realized it was the next part to the retrospective series. Great video as always, I love this retrospective series, its probably the coolest one on youtube. Covering the comics and the show side by side and comparing them through all 11 seasons is nuts. Cant wait to rewatch every episode of this when it ends. I hope you do a review of the spinoff shows in a similar format to these videos, even though you dont have the comics to compare them to, because I love your Walking Dead videos, I dont think anyone elses compare.

Though in the end they should have probably just invented a sister or something for Carol or maybe a cousin for maggie (which would also give her more of a story than just "I hate negan")

I’m so glad you mentioned the reapers introduction scene on the road. I’m currently rewatching season 11 and I did not at all buy the reapers as a threat in that scene. Sure, they massacre a bunch of the basically no-names from Maggie’s new group, but I do not at all buy that ANYONE, even a individuals with prior military training could outclass our survivors to that extent. If you’re capable of surviving 12 years into the apocalypse, I feel like the skill level would be relatively equal among survivors (especially our group)

I enjoyed the reapers. they felt unique to me virtually all the villains weve seen up to this point were just people before all this began. Regular ass people with regular ass lives. But the reapers were mercenaries. They were legit shit trained. And it showed the heroes and negan were overwhelmed very quickly, they had to run, they were fucking hunted and it takes all the effort in the world for them to kill just one because these dudes are highly skilled. The way the reapers are portrayed both onscreen and off. They should have this, they should be the ones winning. only reason the good guys win is because of sneakattacks and dumb fucking luck along with taking a page out of the whisperer handbook.

I never had an issue with the Reapers. They’re lame villains but I lumb them in as world building antagonists like the hospital cops, the claimers and kinda the highwaymen. They exist to fill a small gap and show more people in the world.

Hey, so I have been watching your Walking Dead comic vs TV show retrospective for years and it led to me eventually reading the comic series for the first-time last year. Thank you for the years of making this series. It's going to be sad when it officially ends either this year or next year. You ever thought about reading and going over the novel series by Jay Bonansinga? I recently finished book 5, Descent, and it's a really good series so far. It's canon to the comic universe like the Telltale game series is and I don't see many people talk about it on here, at least anyone interesting. Just thought I'd toss you an idea to do in the future. :)

When it comes to the Reapers the more one looks at it the more obvious it becomes that season 12 was supposed to be the final season and not 11. That they planned for the Reapers to be the main villains for 90% of season 11 and do the Commonwealth story arc in season 12. But then AMC came and said "yeah no. You have one season. Good luck". I actually really enjoyed the Reaper arc and I think a full season would do them justice. I could see Pope dying in like episode 12 and Leah leading the Reapers until like episode 15. Which means that if she came back in season 12 (assuming it would be 24 episodes) in episode 16 some might have even forgitten she was a thing and her return could be more of a surprise as some might have suspected her story was finished in season 11. A man can dream I guess

This part of the season was such a mess, idk why the Reapers were introduced, but even if they were kept in, they couldve done so much more with him, exploring their history with Maggie and having some kind of revelation there, Leah switching sides, a big character death, connecting it to the Commonwealth. As it is it wouldve been better if they were masked assassins and nothing more

Hey would you look at that! That's the first episode since season 4's retrospective where I actually agree with almost everything! There is litreally ONE criticism I disagree with and here is why: I think the complete desperation of The Survivors to actually rebuild and them bwing on the brink of collapse was an AWESOME addition. It made it so that we are not just looking for allies like in the comic book. We actually NEED them. I'm a big hater of the comic book's Commonwealth story arc as it feot like it was building up to this big civil war in it and then Rick just shoots Dwight and dies and it's over (since litreally no one asked I actually DID include the Commonwealth civil war in my twd rewrite and I'm really f*cking proud of what I did there). It also leads to one of my favourite and most under appriciated scenes in the series. In the episode where Carol and Daryl break Lance out of prison he pretty much calls our group on our bulls*it. The plan is to kill Pamela and likely Lance,get Alexandria,Hilltop and Oceanside back and abandon the Commonwealth. How is that any different from wjat Lance and Pamela were doing? Our group wants to protect their friends and family and leave everyone else to themself. Lance and Pamela dod the exact same. Their friends and afamily lived a good life. The rest? Was expandable. The difference is that after killing Pamela if our group leaves the Commonwealth falls and thousands die. While under Pamela and Lance life was rough. But there was life. It makes our group look like giant hypocrites which in this case? They were. That leads to another awesome moment when after the day is won our group is faced with a decision. We got all 3 communities liberated. Lance is dead. Pamela's rule is over. And becouse of the Commonwealth's resources we can actually survive on our own yet again. Do we do that? We don't need The Commonwealth anymore. We could do that. Or do we stay and help steer the Commonwealth into the right path? And Ezekiel and Mercer step up and do just that. They lead it the right way. So yeah I think the show did that one better.

I complained about the saviors while Rick was around, trust me, I would've complained about the reapers all the same 🗿 Jokes aside though, they have some cool moments sure (some of which we're still yet to get to), but I never felt any tension with them whatsoever. We had no real history with them, Daryl and Maggie were both immune bc late-twd and they really didn't have any interesting hook for me personally.

I thought the Reapers actually brought back the good sense of fear to the series that it doesn't always have, and compared to many of the episodes in the second half which is a whole lot of boring commonwealth bits. The pope is also underrated af, dude has barely any dialogue lines but he is straight up intimidating.

Im glad i didnt had to watch this season 1 episode at a time and just binged it entirely so i didnt had to endure the same suffering weekly viewers had to,the entirety of the reaperzzz felt like 2000s anime filler infecting the cannon story,in fact,it felt like the average fear the walking dead plot and that sucked horribly. But the worst part was Daryl out right stating he was "terrified" of the generic side plot "villain",really? The same Daryl that didnt even flinched when he was the saviors prisoner and Negan pretended he was going to bash his head when he tried to scape? The same Negan he saw destroy Abraham and Glenn's skulls and forced them to watch? They had to make Daryl a bitch just to try and trick people in to thinking the reapers were a threat. Wich is a shame,because its evident they really made an effort with the common wealth story and it had to drag the shitty reapers side plot and keep resetting all of Maggie's character development back to season 7 every single episode.

Considering they showed the commonwealth in season 10, I feel like the season cancellation didn’t really have anything to do with the reapers in 11. If we go down that hole, we would still have all of the plot lines colliding at the same time unless they straight up ignored the commonwealth group for the entirety of 11, which I highly doubt even the writers of TWD would do

It just feels like killing Glenn all over again if Maggie takes another husband. If she would have a new love, I think it would have been beautiful for her to be with a widower who has gone through similar trauma to hers. Dante just seems gross and he even disrespected Glenn a few time if I recall
