It's also really important for anyone throwing lots of punches to do a lot of external rotation work to keep the shoulders healthy. And stretching once in a while after training

You are so right about this and this is one of if not the best video on yt explaining hook and rotator cuff problems. Before I got into combat sports,heavy bags and all that I was hitting the gym and learned a lot about the bodies anatomy,tendons,muscles and all that good stuff. I had some problems with my subscapularis and when I started learning hooks on the bag I immediately felt pain in my wrists to the outside and my rear delt area (back shoulder). Ofc my hooks where strong but with bad form but even before I ever did anything combat related I had my body tweaked and fxcked in certain places (like scoliosis,left hip capsule,flat feet...) Anyways I did a lot of face pulls, band workouts for shoulders and ofc I always warm up. Having a strong rear delt helps too but subscapularis is sooo important in hooks and overhands like the coach said ! Anyways I've made this comment too long, listen to this man work on your subscap and hook form.

Sometimes I heal and sometimes I don't, I can't give my full. I even hold back for the fear of getting injured again, with right shoulder pain\discomfort. It can be sad looking that if I do injure my right shoulder, I can't block or punch, I won't be able to defend myself. I train around my shoulder if it does happen

I've noticed that people who throw weak hooks usually don't lift their elbows high enough and "slap". Even a relatively weak person can have powerful punches with good balance and form.

I know that and maybe "weak" was a bad adjective to use, but I'm merely pointing out that from my personal experience poor punching power comes from a lack of form, balance, and overall body mechanics; rarely does it (poor punching power) come from a lack of conditioning.

I actually had to do those movement workouts for my shoulder after I was hit by a car when I was younger. Went to rehab and out of 7 other movement exercises and stuff, those were two of them. It's legit, it works, my shoulder is fine. Actually just started muay thai training again yesterday and the trainer liked my hooks- saying he loved the "snap" I have in them. If this is your issue with hooks, listen to this man. I cannot stress that enough. This is 100% legit, folks.

The hook is difficult to understand. After the fist makes contact does the lower forearm contract toward the upper arm, extend a little away from the upper arm, or does the entire arm remain in a fixed contracted position and pull away retract from the target?

The way I got over that 'unnatural' feeling of throwing the left hook was to practice throwing a stone/tennis ball as far as i could with my left arm . After thousands of repetitions of this it slowly starts feeling similar to when you throw with your right (strong) arm. It does take a lot of reps though and I don't think you can ever get it exactly the same as your strong arm.
@kaarl1815
@kaarl1815 7 жыл бұрын
roadrunnerblink I will give that a go, sounds like it would definitely help. I can change to southpaw and then my lead hook is my right hand, which feels very strong, but as I said it's just my left hook as lead that isn't great

Same. Talking about the AC joint?? I've always thrown quick, hard landing left hooks & upper cuts. However, several dislocations. As well as 3 surgeries.. I hv stopped sparring & fighting ( Muay Thai & Boxing), but looking at one last fight this summer. Im seeing a Sports Therapist to get the most outta what I've got. As well as starting my re-training in boxing with a great coach. Been coaching Muay Thai for 7 yrs (18 yrs total time involved in sport however). Best of luck to you. ALWAYS work to strengthen the shldr muscles, & tendons. As well as keep your muscles loose in areas to avoid spasms. Which create much pain & can aid in injury. Thanks

RECREANT stop punching with focusing on your middle knuckle. It sticks out to much which causes hand and wrist injuries. I know it feels the most sturdy. The problem is it doesn’t distribute enough of the force between your hand correctly. The line of power is in your ring finger knuckle. Which will naturally distribute the force to the rest of your hand equally. Advice from Jack Dempsey. Check out his book “Championship Fighting”
